The official post Atlanta loss RANT thread.

After a loss everyone wants to cut loose and talk about everything that's wrong with the team ( and coaching staff ), including me for that matter. Let's put all this cleansing ranting into one place. After a loss there are always 5-10 fanposts talking about ideas to right the ship. Maybe we should do this after every loss so we can clean up the fan posts.

Star-divide

So here's my rant. We need a real center in the game during crunch time. I don't know if it would have got us the win, but I'm sure it would have helped. That is all.

Jump shots

We got killed in points in the paint and rebounds tonight. Atlanta was picking, rolling, driving, dishing and dunking when it really counted in the final quarter. The Blazers were trying to run plays to get either Brandon or Travis jump shots. When Brandon was double teamed and denied the ball, the 4th quarter offense looked pretty stagnant and relied on Travis. His jump shot is not reliable.
Nate says, “You gotta knock down your looks” in the post-game interview. Can we have a more reliable staple late in games than jump shots from Travis if Brandon can’t get free? It seems as if early on in the season, the opposing teams have already got us figured out in the 4th quarter….we are quite predictable. Jump shots.

steve blake is trash.

You cant tell that the team wouldn’t be better served by dividing his minutes between rudy and miller and NEVER EVER going with the blake miller roy lineup again.

by shiz on Nov 3, 2009 10:31 PM PST reply actions   3 recs

get blake out of here

I would rather see rudy any day. At least he can pass.

by blazermania92983 on Nov 3, 2009 10:32 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Blake and Miller together

at the same time is a recipe for disaster. I agree 100%, those minutes should be Rudy’s or Webster’s.

Once again, I did not like what Steve Blake brought to the game. He was a sieve on defense, and he cannot get the ball into the bigs. I saw him wave Oden off the block more than I saw attempts at entry passes. He plays “not to lose” rather than to win, and we’ve all seen what the prevent defense does (prevents you from winning).

the only 3 guard lineup that has been effective

has included rudy and roy with either andre or blake…but we haven’t seen it in the regular season…only the regular season.

my favorite lineup that was extremely effective without roy included
andre, rudy, martell, outlaw, + center….yet we have only seen that in the game once, however 3guards with blake and andre and roy is a nightly occurence.

Sorry to inturrupt your rant, but the team was winning when Blake went to the bench.

He had a sub par game, but if he played the majority of the game, we would win. The problem is the three guard lineups Nate has been playing, especially with no center like tonight. That equals no defense, and a loss to a team we should beat. I wrote a fanpost about it.

by wingzeta on Nov 3, 2009 11:11 PM PST up reply actions   1 recs

In fact, the +/- for Blake was +2, while Miller was -13.

Miller got 11 assists, but the team is just so much worse when they try to get him playing time, and he logged time with Roy, Aldridge and Oden. Nate knows he could win with Blake just like we did last year, and Blake could have more time to find his shot if he could be on the floor more, but he has to get Miller going since they spent $7million on him, I just wish we didn’t sacrifice games to do it. I’m not saying Miller isn’t a very good player, just a square peg for a round hole on this team at the moment.

nate.......

I cant say enouph bad things about him……..

I am not blaming the refs at all. Portland deserved to lose this game. I am almost glad they did with that piss poor performance. But I feel like I am watching the refs not basketball. They controll who plays the game, how the game is played, the speed of the game. It’s whistle after whistle after whistle every posession.

by blazermania92983 on Nov 3, 2009 10:31 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

We certainly deserved to lose this game. Atlanta took it from us. We missed ALL our opportunities to take it back.

We just don’t even look like a real team right now. We look lost. Guys are passing up open shots. And there always seemed to be a Hawk who was cutting to the rim uncontested.

needed to happen down the stretch as well.

yet nate has oden+webs on bench

and he actually put Steve Blake on Joe down the stretch...

Steve Blake!?!? I love the guy, think he is a better fit on this team than Miller, but he can’t shut down windows 7, let alone Joe johnson…

miller and blake

are both LIABILITIES on defense at this point.

…and Roy we usually try to save for offense…

…and nate decides to play them all at the same time?

UGH. Nate’s defensive matchups this season have been horrible. Aside from putting Martell on Melo+Durant that is.

Enjoy the Ride

I tend to blame refs for a tough loss. Not this time, the blazers and the coaching staff have nobody but themselves to blame…

I think nate is a good coach but.......

his substitution patterns are horrible, Blake and miller should never be on the court at the same time. I also do not understand pulling greg with foul trouble but never bringing him back in.

Oden sits to start second half

Someone please please please give me a rational reason for this. I’m by no means a huge Oden guy. However, I just need someone to tell me why McMillian believed this would somehow affect the game. It was just a random move. This is the most concerning thing I have ever seen from a coach. It was a desperate attempt to have an impact on the game. The fact is- he simply wanted to “control” the outcome of the game and he didn’t know what else to do other than make a strange substitution.

I don’t believe the Blazers are ‘finished’ and I certainly think they are going to bounce back. However, I’m concerned that Nate has panicked and he didn’t show much composure tonight.

by TPfor3 on Nov 3, 2009 10:50 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I was at the game

My first game of the season, and it started out looking great. Then McMillian got afraid of his bigs and the all-guard lineup got afraid of the paint. For most of the 4th quarter we were all asking each other if Pryz was injured because he wasn’t in foul trouble, and when Greg has 5 he sits and never comes back in. If he’s good enough to “save for later” by benching with 5 fouls, why not put him in with 5 and get a few more quality minutes out of him? Hell, why not let him foul out every game for a month and see if the refs call it a little differently? And if you want to play a jump shooting offense why not at least put a big guy down low to rebound? Tonight I saw one or two pick and roll situations early on that turned into jump shots instead of passes to the post, I think that might be the biggest gap between the Blazers game plan and the elite teams in the league.

The people in my section all put this on McMillian, the entire second half felt out of sync and small ball cost us the game. On the way home I asked my friend “You drafted a center #1 overall AND you’re paying a quality guy to back him up. Why would you do that if you don’t like having a 5 on the floor?”

I’m just confused tonight, I know I love my Blazers but I have no idea WHAT my Blazers are anymore.

by JonathanPDX on Nov 3, 2009 11:10 PM PST reply actions   2 recs

I absolutely agree.

We have one of the best center tandems in the league, and not having one on the floor at all times is inexcusable. And what the heck is up with the double PG lineups! All of our 3 guard lineups should be Roy, Rudy and a PG. Blake is not good enough to take minutes from Rudy or Roy AT THEIR POSITION.

You can measure skill and talent with your eyes, but productivity is shown through statistics.

Not a fan of the smaller lineup in the 4th tonight.

Another tough game to watch….painful. I can’t wait for our first blowout win so I can sit back and smile during the 4th for once. I know that day is coming soon. They did a good job on Roy tonight sheesh. Though Roy did seem to be a little out of his element. How many times did he lose control of the ball tonight? Especially trying to do his behind the back dribble. Ugh… another game down. Bring on the Spurs!

My rant:

Would someone in the local media besides Dwight Jaynes finally start calling Nate on his shoddy coaching instead of giving him a pass. Players don’t get passes even when they’re injured so I’m curious as to why Nate gets a free pass.

+1

Oddly enough, the media plays a disturbingly significant role in deciding a failing coach’s future.

Quick is dependent on Nate

for access. He has a solid realtionship with him, so poisoning the well isn’t in his interests. I thought his dismissal of the touch chart was pretty laughable for a “journalist”. Even if you thought it was a small sample size, say that and move on – he went out of his way to attack any criticism of the gameplan (and by extension, Nate) as baseless.

I love rant threads, its like persmission for me to overreact...

My problems:

1) Steve Blake and Andre Miller should never, ever play at the same time. Unless there are injuries, Rudy or Roy should always be in at the 2 spot.

2) Rotation, rotation, rotation. Too much yo-yoing of players, too many experimental lineups, not enough solidity revolving each players role.

3) Please have a true center in at all times, unless there are major foul problems. I hate it when any team tries to match up against an inferior team, especially one that is uptempo oriented. The blazers don’t run and gun, we slow it down and control the tempo. Interior defenders and dominate rebounders are crucial, good thing we have two of them, I suggest not letting them rot on the bench.

Man, I feel better, these rant threads really work.

Big W against the spurs, book it…

It's time for Pritchard to finalize Portland's transformation

The job that Kevin Pritchard has done is remarkable, but it’s time to put the finishing pieces on his masterpiece. We can argue the value of Andre Miller, Brandon Roy…Greg Oden etc. or whether Nate McMillan is doing a good job, but at the end of the day there are just too many players at the same ability level on this team. At the professional level you simply can not play 10 players 25 minutes a night and expect to win. Similarly, you can not rotate guys in and out of the line-up without some form of continuity.

Is it too early to panic? Yes…but this start is proving everything I’ve feared since the middle of last season. Portland surprised teams last year and this off-season they essentially added three new pieces to the puzzle (Miller, Oden, Webster). On paper it should have made the team better, but games aren’t played on paper. The Blazers are 11 deep (sorry Juwan, but your days of large minutes have passed) and there are not enough minutes to go around.

My thoughts.

Start Andre Miller. He’s better than Blake. Period, end of story. I don’t care if the Blazers won 70 games last season with Blake, you signed Andre to solidify the point guard position, quit jerking him around and give him the opportunity to do what he was brought in to do.

*Andre Miller 30 minutes
Blake 18 minutes

*Brandon Roy 38 minutes
Fernandez 10 minutes

*Martell Webster 30 minutes
Outlaw 12 minutes
Fernandez 6 minutes

*LaMarcus Aldridge 36 minutes
Outlaw 12 minutes

*Greg Oden 28 minutes
Przybilla 20 minutes

and if someone isn’t happy with their minutes then look to move them.

by westsportsbias on Nov 4, 2009 1:15 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

I may not agree with your minutes allocation

but i totally agree with your point. Nate needs to pick his guys, tell the rest of them, “TOUGH!” and get on with the season.

I'm starting to get frustrated with Nate.

I’ve been one of his bigger defenders but he’s starting to make decisions that are difficult to defend. Like sitting both Joel and Oden when we’re getting killed inside and on rebounds.

I second that.
