Delonte West Indicted On Six Weapons Charges
A Prince George's County grand jury indicted Delonte West, a Washington area native who plays for the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers, on six weapons offenses Tuesday in a September incident in which he was arrested on the Capital Beltway with three loaded guns and an 8 1/2-inch bowie knife, authorities said.
In addition to the weapons offenses -- each of which is a misdemeanor carrying a maximum penalty of three years in prison -- the grand jury also indicted West, 26, on one count each of reckless driving and negligent driving.
...
The officer pulled West over for making an unsafe lane change, and as the officer approached the motorcycle, West told him he had a handgun in his waistband.
The officer called for backup and searched West and his vehicle.
Three guns were found -- a 9mm Beretta in West's waistband, a Ruger .357 Magnum strapped to his leg, and a 12-gauge shotgun in a guitar case slung over his back, authorities said.
West also had additional shotgun shells in a backpack, authorities said.

Not necessarily.
The weapons charges are misdemeanors, just like the reckless driving charges.

Who cares about the Cavs and a game...
West needs help badly.

The man is documented as mentally ill. It should not a be a stigma that he needs help.
Hopefully he doesn’t go to jail, but goes to treatment.
dinasour type of guys choir boys
He made an unsafe lane change, ooohhhhh.
and carried guns. Not a big deal at all. Sounds like some prosecutor is angling for publicity. If he has no priors, he should get no jail.
Don't pay too much attention to the number of counts.
Prosecutors always bring as many counts as they can in a case. Had West spit on the ground while being questioned and the officer noted it in his report, West would have faced an additional count for that.

Excellent point.
I know of a guy who was facing 23 felony accounts including 9 Identity Theft charges, unfortunately our system is allowing him to walk free if he completes a drug rehab. The number of counts does not seem to make a difference at all. Only in the cases of violent crimes maybe.
I believe the primary reason ...
… is it allows prosecutors to “trade down” and still get a conviction on either the charge(s) they want or at least get a suitable sentencing result.
I could check with my brother. Up until recently he was one of the most successful county and federal prosecutors in SC.

He sped past a marked police car
Carrying a bunch of weapons he wasn’t supposed to have (including a shotgun in a guitar case).

Maryland gun laws
are so ridiculous, this story is sad because Delonte is not right mentally, and he was just carrying guns, who the hell cares, maryland sucks.

Having grown up in Maryland, I concur.
The state seems to be in competition with Massachusetts as the state that inserts itself the most into it’s citizen’s lives.

Why on earth would one guy need so many guns? It's not like he can shoot them all at once.
And he is a pro athelete… couldn’t he just hire a body guard and save himself the trouble?

He clearly isn't mentally healthy
that is some extreme paranoia, I hope he gets the help he needs and gets his bipolar under control…

“He aims real careful, no hurry, and… BAM! That Walker Colt blew up in his hand, which was a failing common to that model. You see, if old Corky had had two guns instead of just a big (male body part), he’d would have been there right to the end to defend himself.”

Your confusing thesis has captured my attention. Tell me more.

As the line goes "Clarence, it's better to have a gun and not need it ....
… then need a gun and not have it."
Could be Delonte took that sentiment to heart.

If he doesn't have a gas operated ....
… belt fed, select fire light machine gun, he doesn’t have squat.
Well, ok, a BAR would suffice.

I'm going to hook up with Delonte when the Zombie apocalypse happens. The guy is prepared.
In all seriousness, the man obviously needs help. No good ever comes out of carrying a bunch of heat around with you.
Tell that to those folks in that Texas McDonalds ...
… or the students at Virgina Tech.

West is the Cavs 2nd best player and this could be
Real bad for them,I have to wonder what the court time frame is.
What if he was just on his way to a gun range?
I don’t see anything wrong with what he did. Guns are cool and so are motorcycles. The only thing that would make this story cooler is if he could somehow involve sex.
