New Look/Feel of the Site

Is there any aspect of this that actually improves anything, or have we just changed for the fun of it?

Star-divide

That sounds overly negative, perhaps, but I don't see any new features that make me say, "Wow, I like it so much better now?"

On the other hand, I really don't like it that you can't have a space between paragraphs in the comments.  That makes comments so much harder to read.  You could indent the start of every paragraph, I guess, but that is a pain.

I started putting a blank line with a single period on the line in between each paragraph, which makes it a little more readable.  But that isn't really convenient.

Any other changes that anyone noticed, positive or negative?

The new look doesn't bother me

The fact that they still didn’t fix the problem where the fanposts are off the right side of the page, for resolutions 1024 and under? Now that’s irritating.

I’ll go look around, just seeing the redesign now.

I should have put a period into that line break.

You’re right, it looks annoying and less professional.

by Timmay! on Nov 3, 2009 4:54 AM PST up reply actions

This flat borderless design seems to be hip these days

It does look a bit more modern, but also makes it somewhat harder to read initially (though I suppose you get quickly used to it). I don’t like all the white space in the column to the right that you will get in long comment threads once the fanshots have ended.

Fanpost and Fanshot interface still looks the same. I would have liked a better comment rating system that is a bit more granular than flag or rec. And a homepage that reflects new comments in articles and Fanposts without having to reload the site, but obviously that would bring page views or some other metric down so SBN has no interest in that.

But slowly things happen that they cannot help and the Blazers Fellowship of the Ring begins to break apart

Seems like a lateral move to me.

My team went to the playoffs in my first year.

Maybe they are running a wildcat offense, and now comes the trick play :)

I assume that would be some kind of bright lime green flash interface.

I hate to be the one to say this, but

I like it. It looks cleaner.
.
I agree with jscot about the paragraph spacing, though.

Channing Frye:
G: 3, Min: 32.0, FG: 58.3%, 3PT: 65%, FT: 66.7%, Reb: 5.7, Ast: 1.0, Stl: 2.0, BS: 0.7, PPG: 19.7

DeJuan Blair:
G: 3, Min: 20.7, FG: 70.6%, 3PT: 0%, FT: 33.3%, Reb: 8.3, Ast: 1.3, Stl: 0.7, BS: 0, PPG: 8.3

by Kaboomm on Nov 3, 2009 5:19 AM PST reply actions

Agreed regarding it looking cleaner.

While lots of black background can look “cool”, it does not enhance web usability. The greater use of white does.
.
Then again, having medium gray text on a light gray background, as appears on the right side listings of FanPosts and FanShots is a huge usability faux pas……..

That change happened awhile ago at Blazersedge. It, of course, is on Dave and Ben over SB Nation.

For me, I’d also choose the previous logo over the current one in a vote. However, it’s not a big deal.

Isn't it?

I thought I saw that they were making the same change over at Addicted to Quack. Maybe it’s just rolling out in phases.

After much independent research, I have determined that ATQ has made the same change.

Maybe it’s just taking a while to roll out on the 220 blogs in the network.

I preferred the black background

But I don’t mind the white/gray that much. The paragraph change in comments is going to be annoying. Especially when threads get into detailed discussion of the thread. I’m not looking forward to reading several pages worth of text without spaces between the paragraphs.

Another annoying little item, is that the Blazersedge logo blocks out the top right portion of fanposts and fanshots on my screen. So I can’t read the first few words of the title, or see the first few words of the 1st sentence.

by Gelvalst on Nov 3, 2009 6:24 AM PST reply actions

I'm having a harder time reading it

with the white background

so I don’t like it

Maybe its just me

But the Blazersedge logo at the top left blocks the headline and first few lines of each topic I click on. Anyone else getting this?

Nice new profile pic Jscot. As FROTW, does this symbolize that you will take over Mother Russia first? or just that you are rebuilding the fabrics of communism here at BEdge first?

There is another (better)

way to put

spaces between paragraphs.

Can jscot figure it out?

?

darn

It looks like they fixed that problem

I think.

Yes.

Is it using a space?

Or does that not work at all?
Hmm?

I find it much more readable in the main section

but am disappointed that nothing was done to make fanshots more prominent. The amount of fanshots that end up getting made into fanposts simply due to screen position takes away from the value of fanposts.

I prefer the old one way more

This isn’t bad, but it’s kind of like “Okay let’s round out a couple menus, change the background color, and choose a more pixel-y font”. It looks more amateurish now. And the lack of contrasts kind of annoys me. But whatever. I’ll get used to it in a week.

by Seven06Renault on Nov 3, 2009 9:03 AM PST reply actions

Anybody noticed changes other than the design? Performance changes? Major glitches fixed?

It always takes me a few days to get used to design changes, so I’m going to hold off on judging this one, other to say that the giant headlines seem like overkill. The new design makes better use of the entire screen, for us widescreen folks, and that’s nice.

I’m not sure what the complaint is about the paragraphs. They’re working fine for me. Maybe it got fixed? Maybe it’s browser related?

by Corvid on Nov 3, 2009 9:32 AM PST reply actions

The Edit Settings now has a remark "Look out for new customization options here in the future" that I had not seen yet

Maybe you can adapt something like the background in the future.

The site doesn’t feel really more responsive to me so far. A few comments didn’t post instantly, so double-postings after a reload might still happen. And no new “advanced” features other than the layout redesign that I’m aware of.

But slowly things happen that they cannot help and the Blazers Fellowship of the Ring begins to break apart

by Norsktroll on Nov 3, 2009 9:47 AM PST up reply actions

the only thing I notice so far

is it loads much faster. The old design would take forever to load, even on my super fast computer.

Widescreen support!

That alone makes it worth it for me.

I think the tabs at the top for FanPosts FanShots, Archives, etc. are useful.

I generally hate the new typography for headlines.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside.
