Nate Poll Re-Visited

Given the latest turn of events, I decided to do another poll just to get a consensus about where my fellow Blazer Fans stand in regards to our coaching situation. Do we have the best possible coach available for this team? Kevin Pritchard has definitely assembled a group of guys with great character, superior talent and most importantly a willingness to be coached. So it is my opinion that the players have done everything asked of them. In other words it's not Blakes fault that he's starting. ( as crazy as that sounds )

So have at it Ladies and Gents!

Poll
Should Nate remain head coach?
Yes he should

I Like Nate But,

I know if we had a diferent coach they would play Bayless and Oden much more and further their development.

what have you seen to keep him?

He was good with the team he had, that is not however the team he has now.

He needs to figure it out quick and I do not think he will. He is the NBA’s version of Tressel. Has a system and will stick to it live or die. The system worked great with last year’s team, this is no the same team, it is ready to be coached up, and they are mired in a system that does not match the talent available. Nate has not shown any, ANY inclination to work on an inside out game, in fact when asked about he said that the players to to “figure it out”.

Coach is responsible for the training of the team. If Nate himself has no desire to coach to the talent he has rather than his system then he should be replaced.

Man I've seen you all over this site in every post calling for the coaches head....

we are sitting at 12-7 right now…regardless of who the wins are against. You just don’t fire the coach over that. Given we have not played as well as the fan base expected right out of the gate but I think the expectations of this team are a bit over the top. In my opinion we are no more than a 50 to 54 win team this year which is reflected in our record. A second round playoff appearance would be great. We are not even close to being championship material..Nate or no Nate. If we flame out in the first round again you may have a little more ground to stand on with your statements. I just have a bit more patience with the team and the coach because I have seen it over and over that after a few bad losses here comes hate fest and then after a few good wins people like you just go away…I’m hoping for a couple of good wins

by j dubya on Nov 29, 2009 9:52 PM PST up reply actions

why must people of differing opinion "go away"

why can’t we just debate the point. I happen to think this group is a bit more talented than you do, although you are probably right, they are not yet title contenders. I just don’t think Nate is the guy to move them to that championship level and his ambivalent comments about coaching the team does not help.

Man it just is not logical that you fire the coach 19 games into the season after a 12-7 start

I respect your right to state your opinion and I understand that you don’t like his coaching or his comments but do you honestly think management is going to can him at his point? We have a very young team, we are integrating some new pieces, we have long term injuries to 2 of our major rotation players, and Nate has shown the ability to coach this team well over the past few years. At the end of the season we can revisit this conversation.

by j dubya on Nov 29, 2009 11:41 PM PST up reply actions

i doubt management will can him

does not change the fact that I think they should. You have good points about injuries, new pieces and so on. Problem is I don’t see him working on the new pieces and he did an interview with the Columbian where he was asked about who is responsible to get the Big Three working together. The players or you?

Instead of saying I need to work with them to get them to work together better, to not feel a little lost (as Brandon has asserted on numerous occassions), he says it does not fall an anybody.

Look I know these are pro players, and that they are the ones with the talent and skill set to get it done, not the coach, and ultimately the players have to be the ones to make it happen, but the coach should be taking responsibilty for that development. Any leader of any group should take the responsibility, that is why they are the leader. A coach in particular is supposed to develop the strategy to make the team he has as effective as possible and then train the team to execute. If he can’t take responisibility for that role I just don’t think he should be the coach.

Player Coach
Nate is a good coach to a developing team, or a good assistant, but when he has a lot of talent, he doesn’t know what to do with it all

It's too early

He’s made some unpopular decisions but i feel like after two bad losses (and admittedly embarrassing ones) he’s all of the sudden the root of all evil. We had a good season last year under him and have a very solid record as it is. He has done a great job turning this program around from when he took over and i think we should all have more faith in him.

I want Adelman

I know he has a job and all, but he could figure out this roster.

Trade Nate!

It was actually Jeffs brother Stan whom he replaced...

but I am inclined to agree with Dario that you just don’t fire the coach mid-season. I will however disagree that he is in hot water. In my opinion that is all a manifest of what is being spewed on this site as well as other blogs. I would be greatly surprised if the management have any feelings of doubt about his ability to lead the team at this point. I think they understand the relatively young age of the players on this team in addition to the integration of an expanded role for Greg and bringing Miller into the fold. I also believe the the loss of Outlaw and Batum has affected the chemistry more than some would like to admit.

Wayyyy too soon to consider firing a coach that lead a team to a 12-7 record

"Rudy is not everyday a shooter," Fernandez said. "He's defense. He's passes. He's assists."

shouldn't the Blazers be sitting pretty?

I’m gonna go ahead and say that the Blazers should have won both games vs. ATL, the disaster vs. GS and the disaster vs. MEM. The Blazers should have a sexy 16-3 record, maybe even 17-2 with that close loss to Denver. And thats generous because I think we all know the Blazers are capable of beating UT…18-1 isn’t at all a ridiculous proposition from this team.
Unfortunately, Blake is playing TOO MUCH, Andre, not enough. Dante wasn’t playing when Howard was (and shouldn’t have). Greg is sitting too much, fouls be darn’d.
And I’d like to point out that the coach decides who plays and who sits.

by pdxlifer on Nov 30, 2009 9:38 AM PST up reply actions

It's not just about the record.

It’s about the progress we’re suppose to make, it’s about the direction we’re going in, it’s about the belief this team has that it can win on a high level, it’s about what the coach instills in the team. If the coach is always indecisive what do you think the team will be? And what kind of coach says " It’s not my job to figure out how to help the guys mesh on the court, I just put them out there, It’s the players job to figure that out"?? How about coming up with a strategy that is conducive to the personnel that we have? Maybe I’m crazy or stupid but I always thought it was the coaches job to come up with the system and the game plan and the players job to execute it and compete. Have you ever heard nate say in any of his post game interviews that the team didn’t execute? They do execute, but his strategy is just…… " you figure it out ". And let’s not forget this is still one of the youngest teams in the NBA. That might fly with the Spurs or the Celtics, But we don’t have the experience they do.
Something about that just doesn’t seem right.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
