Sunday 29 JD - zombies vs vampires
Vampires are hot right now. Zombies? Not so much. The Twilight movies have catapulted vampirism ( is that a word? ) into the hearts, minds, of wallets of teenage girls everywhere. I still say Zombies are a far superior monster to vampires. They are just scarier. The prospect of being ripped to shreds by dead versions of people you know is quite awful. At least if a vampire feeds on you you might get laid first, seeing as how they use their attractiveness to catch their prey. Also, with a vampire attack you might not get killed, but join the ranks, making you a bad-@$$. Also, not very scary.
Zombies are just superior in scariness, and awesomeness factor over vampires.

I also just watched "The Moster Squad" last night.

I bought it a few months ago and have been waiting to watch it with one of my friends. Still awesome.

And are Mummy's considered Zombies?
Seems like they are in their own class.

i voted vampires.
but only because of the more historic type vampire. these new fangled weak-sauce metrosexual vampires aren’t even monsters. but a vampire like Nosferatu? that’s scarier. Plus, the vampires have a pretty frighteningl back story/history with Vlad the Impaler and all that. Real vampires are scarier than zombies.

Mort, did you end up with the best of the apartments?
But I love you :-(
by Mortimer on Nov 19, 2009 7:04 PM PST
The 2nd best!
There were three 1 bedroom apartments for the same super good price, with the nicest of the 3 being a nicer and bigger place AND had free utilities— which is just nuts. I was the first to apply for all 3.
I got the 2nd best one (smaller than the nicest 1 bedroom, but same good location and has an actually nice view… it’s an upstairs corner apartment, overlooking the street, and has no windows anyone can walk past, which is something I like a lot. I hate when people can walk past my window and peek in, even though no one is trying to. I never leave my blinds open because of it. Now, I will, and the place gets a lot of light).
I go sign the lease sometime today, but I am paranoid because the nicest 1 bedroom had called me the day after I turned in my application and said I had the place, but when I called back all happy they told me they called the wrong number and were trying to call about a crappy bachelor apartment with no kitchen. Ugh.
But, I am very happy with the place it seems I have gotten, and I never expected to get a 1 bedroom for the price I am paying.
Awesome. i'm glad you.

1871, of W. African origin (cf. Kikongo zumbi “fetish;” Kimbundu nzambi “god”), originally the name of a snake god, later with meaning “reanimated corpse” in voodoo cult. But perhaps also from Louisiana creole word meaning “phantom, ghost,” from Sp. sombra “shade, ghost.” Sense “slow-witted person” is recorded from 1936.

It's official, Lawrence Frank was fired this morning
The Nets decided not to wait for tonight’s game.
The “I had no idea” line of the article:
Frank leaves the Nets as the franchise’s all-time NBA leader in coaching victories with 225.
That's what surprised me. I didn't realize the Nets have never really kept a coach very long.
I couldn’t tell if your previous comment was sarcasm or not.
Maybe it's time for him to move on
But it ain’t his fault they are 0 and forever. They got 2 good pieces, and one has been out almost all season. They knew starting the year they’d suck, just funny that he’s getting fired for it.
He’ll end up somewhere nicer I bet.
Oh good
I was wondering if you were serious.
Yep, I can’t imagine a good reason to let Frank go right now. He’s been coach for 5, with the org for 10, and there’s no real sign another coach would do better. It’s change for the sake of it.
Unless the coach wants it
It is pointless.
Well, with 2010 being the goal for that team, maybe it’s better for Frank this way so that the team can have an interim coach, and start the search for the REAL coach without it being totally rude to Frank.
The team will suck either way, so it doesn’t matter who coaches them, if they just don’t see Frank as their coach of a good Nets team.
Seems unfair to me; he isn’t the problem.
Maybe it's because I'm stupid
But I can’t remember any other Nets coach aside from Byron Scott and Frank.
Bill Fitch? He coached everyone I guess…
The Nets, even when in the Finals, were never very good, so while it is surprising they’ve never had a trademark longterm coach, it makes sense with what I can recall.
your not stupid its west coast bias
I was just thinking the same thing… I have no clue who coached them other than Scott. Much like most East coast teams. I just don’t pay attention.
...and that's a good thing
by In Walks Rudy on Nov 29, 2009 1:00 PM PST up reply actions
I guessed Larry Brown coached them, and I was right
But that’s not fair, that’s almost a 50/50 shot these days.
I forgot Byron Scott took them to the finals. Well, technically AI did, but you know what I meant.
Larry Brown, back in 81 to 1983
That’s so long ago that I doubt records are even kept from back then.
do you think this counts the years as an ABA team?
It doesn’t seem as though they had a coach last long enough even back then.
"oh dear god. Please be more irresponsible". - Claire
I'll repost my half-rant from this morning.
FROM YESTERDAY’S JD:
What’s to hear?
Norsk is right, copy and paste my rant from last night.
Oden needs to play more, be involved more, everything. I’ve always argued that.
After Nate came to the "right" conclusions with benching Howard for Dante, getting Bayless minutes, leaving Oden in after 2 first half fouls, I am not sure this is a coaching problem. And then you got Roy reminiscing about that dream season of yesteryear that resulted in a 1st round bomb. I say this is the players, and Nate was the same (for better or worse) as ever. Slow changing, but usually changing in the right direction.
Roy has to find that spark and get used to playing with Oden.
The biggest change I’ve undergone this season is believing we would— for sure— be better off with Paul Milsap as our starting PF. LMA has been very bad at all of the things a PF should do, and Oden will eventually completely supplant his post scoring. LMA has to adjust for that.
A rebounding, defending, role playing PF who can hit a jumper but not rely on it would likely fit us best, now that Oden is becoming our inside scorer who should be getting all of LMA’s shots.
LMA is still very tradeable, even this early into his not-yet-starting big deal. If we DIDN’T have an Oden, LMA would likely be scoring and rebounding a lil’ more, and pretty much no one else has an Oden. Most teams desperately need a big who can score, and would be happy to have a young one like LMA.
LMA has been too affected to being featured less on offense, giving him much less energy on defense. That is bad and dumb. He has to come to the realization that personal scoring stats and touches are meaningless in the big picture— you got your deal, you don’t need to play for a deal for a long time, now the focus is on whatever is best for the team.
I think he can come to the realization but he sure ain’t doing a good job of it right now.
Everyone is being pissy, everyone is tired, everyone is grumpy— players, coaches, and especially fans. It’s just a phase, if you want my honest opinion. I think most are all too eager to jump on the FIRE THE COACH bandwagon, as always… as if that sort of change will help, or correct the possible longterm problems of Roy getting used to Oden.
Roy is being so two-thousand-and-late now! It’s almost 2010, Roy, get with the times! The next decade is the Oden Decade, and Roy needs to be happy to be a part of it.
I gotta say, this will sound stronger than I mean it, but I blame Roy and LMA more than anyone. They are not fulfilling their promise as team leaders— and Roy gets the brunt of my blame. LMA is LMA, a 3rd option who is currently playing worse than that but fully capable of being a 3rd option. Roy is our heart and soul and the face of the team. His failure thus far to get everyone talking, on the same page, and figuring things out is, to me, so much worse than anything Nate is doing or not doing. As far as I know, anyways.
Oden had a tired, off game. Another reason to wish for him to have 30 minutes as much as possible (even in blow outs) is that he hasn’t gone through a full season of 30+ minutes a night, and that means he’ll never be fully conditioned until he can experience that. Fight through the dead legs of March and April. You can’t simulate it or know how to do it, until you do it.
Oden can’t hope to get a rebound if the Jazz never miss, of course.
I see no reason we can’t figure this out, with good progress being seen before the New Year most likely.
This is on the players, especially (as far as I can see) Roy, who needs to realize why we lost in the 1st round last season and work on us being a team that can go deep in the playoffs, and not a jump shooting team who can win 50+ games easily.
We’re still going to win a lot of games as we figure this out, but it can be a helluva lot smoother than it has been. I am pretty disappointed in a lot of our Blazer heroes right now.
I can see why people can be frustrated with Nate, but I can’t really see how we’re being out coached or mishandled right now. The players, especially the key non-Oden ones, aren’t doing what they are supposed to do.
Mortimer
AND POSTED BELOW IT:
If Roy plays harder on defense
Than he can get on others for slacking on defense.
If Roy involves Oden more, we’ll win more. If Roy is more open to changing the team for the better and not just recreating the best season in the history of the franchise, the championship 2008-09 season… we win more, at least in the long run.
I guess you can say "well bench Roy until he does those things", but that won’t happen to any main player unless they are acting very poorly. And that creates a whole other enchilada and all but guarantees the season is lost.
The players ain’t doing what they should, combined with Nate perhaps taking a step back to let them figure it out when he should be more active in getting the key players together, and also combined with Nate’s slow changing ways… but to me, the problems begin and end when players aren’t doing what they know they should be doing, and not doing what they have done a million times before.
Oh, and Nate going to that damn 3 guard lineup just slowed things down. We woulda’ won those games if we started Bayless and Dante, doesn’t mean it was the correct decision. Going to a gimmicky lineup slowed down the development of becoming the team we want to be by April. That really annoyed me.
Now that I’ve thought about it more, I firmly believe this is a phase that sucks for now but we will forget about it in a few months, because things will have drastically changed. You gotta go through these growing pains early on, and we’ve been devoid of them mostly the last 2 years.
BACK TO LIVE ACTION:
I think the players are being more the problem than Nate, but judging the coaching and how he is dealing with it is very tough, for better or worse. What we can see, though, is Roy not being accepting of the new team and not trying on defense. Same for LMA.
I blame those players for that, not the coach.
Nate is still the same Nate as before.
I missed the part at the bottom previously
What’s what I get for just glancing through the updates.
Nate is still the same Nate as before.
Bingo. I said similar in yesterday’s gameday thread. From there, it just depends on your viewpoint of Nate.
Yeah. he's got the same problems as before
His team’s have relied on jumpers and were poor defensively, traditionally.
He’s been saying we need to work it inside more, and we all see Oden needs the ball more, so I have hope that can change. And Oden’s presence inside has really helped our defense— doesn’t mean Nate coached anything differently, it means we got better personnel inside.
The effort on defense has to come from the Blazers themselves, in particular Roy and LMA. That they are doing so poorly is simply not the coaches fault— not from our well paid leaders.
They just aren’t getting it right now. Only time and some introspective sense knocked into them will do that.
I have no faith in Nate adjusting in time to save a playoff series. I’m tired of telling my friend that the other team is about to hit a three when we go into our weird zone. I’m tired of jumper basketball. I’m tired of seeing teams execute Houston’s playoff game plan against Roy.I’m tired of the coach never taking it on the chin for his team.
Maybe I’m just bitter right now. But I am so tired of the high-low zone.
i cry for nic
You could very well be 100% right
To me, right now, the much bigger problem is that our leaders ain’t playing like we know they can, and their body language isn’t hiding their malaise.
If we play more through Oden, if Batum comes back reasonably healthy and able to defend, if Roy can TRY ON DEFENSE LIKE AN ADULT, and we use Miller as the secondary playmaker when necessary… we will win a series against almost anyone.
The effort thing is what gets me. No reason for Roy and LMA to have such poor effort.
Sure, we can win a series against anyone… but it sure sounds like it would be a case of talent winning despite scheme, even from your comment.
I’d love to see a coach that is X and O brilliant.

"I’d love to see a coach that is X and O brilliant."
I like JVG, but that isn’t his forte. According to reports, though, that fits the description of Mike Budenholzer, who I now contend will be an off-season hire at head coach to replace Nate McMillan.
Still, I’d like a defensive-minded coach like JVG here. While part of the problem on defense is LaMarcus Aldridge’s softness and Brandon Roy’s laziness, the current coaching staff sucks at establishing a plan to defend against the pick-and-roll and relies too much on zone for an NBA team. In my opinion, JVG would fix that.

All possible media reports and stories about Nate were overwhelmingly positive before he became the Blazer coach as well
The Nets have never had great players, and he’s one of the rare coaches who became a coach without playing at any level (those are rare and usually became a coach for a good reason), but familiarity breeds contempt with coaches.
Frank has always done well for the talent that he’s had. I don’t get why the Nyets would fire him… he has nothing there.

Frank had the Nets playing harder at 0-17 than McMillan has the Blazers playing at 12-7.

Frank has changed his scheme to fit his players each of the last two years. He went to a dribble-drive offense keyed by Harris, and is now running offense through the post with Lopez emerging.
He is flexible and a brilliant basketball mind.

Haha, it seems true
I’ve watched the Nets a little bit now, and yeah— they are trying and even competing. They’ve had some near wins.
They just aren’t good and their best player has been out. It isn’t rocket science.
People always bring up the legitimate argument “Who is better out there?”
I really would argue that Frank has done well with what he has been given and could be a top ten coach easily… if he wasn’t given a roster with two or three players on it.
i cry for nic
I agree.
So, serious questions:
Has Nate showed enough in his coaching career that makes him a top-20 coach?
Is Nate a demonstrably and significantly better coach than ANY active coach, minus interims? Probably a couple.. but not too many. He does alright when he has a lot of talent but always seems to make the same mistakes. Haven’t seen much growth.
"oh dear god. Please be more irresponsible". - Claire
At this point, given that Nate is neither the long term answer nor the short term answer after recent discussions
I would happily take Lawrence Frank right now. The players are down enough, it seems, that a coaching change wouldn’t meet such a backlash that it would cause problems.
And from all accounts he is a highly flexible coach both in-game and season long. Given our depth and varied talents that’s the exact kind of coach we need.
It's a tune-out fest.

I suspect the Blazers will look a little better
Three days off at home, a couple days to bond in practice, and Nate will make some adjustments to at least put a band-aid on the problems that are suddenly public knowledge.
I actually expect a win right now, but without any of the problems we’re seeing getting resolved along the way.
I hope so
I have been divesting in them emotionally lately.
A lot of the problems look like lack of following direction and lack of hustle, which are usually signs of a team giving up on a coach. I hope that isnt the case though.

I'm dead tired today and occupied with other things. Just an idea I had: Can the Blazers shooting coach teach Miller a better 3?
Can the dribbling coach for Jerryd teach Rudy how to handle the ball (problem is he has international games next summer)? And maybe Martell?
That would be valuable. Jason Kidd learned at “old age” how to shoot better. Not sure if the Blazers and their fans have that much patience. At the moment Miller is underused and not doing “what he does” but what he can’t do. Thus he was the wrong pickup until now.

They were down 20, tightened and swarmed their defense, jumped the pace to get some easy baskets, and boom they lead by 2. Win or lose, they did a great job during the comeback.
They have a pretty good group of guys.
Guys who know they need to scrap and hustle every time EVER have a chance.
