Nate’s Famous FBP

While watching Roy feed Dre great a textbook ‘Flaming Bag Pass’ down big to Utah in the 1st, I realized:

(a)    That’s why Roy loves Trout, because he can hit the ‘flaming bag’ shot

(b)   That’s why Roy loves Blake, because he can hit the ‘flaming bag’ shot, and

(c)    The big realization:

Star-divide

the “flaming bag” shot is a planned (alternative) outcome in Nate’s famed offense set.

Mike Rice, twice, made a mention about Brandon have to “know what the shot clock  is” (before delivering the FBP) – twice -- in the first half.

When I saw that pass I decided that Roy did not like Miller

It felt like he passed to Miller on purpose with no time on the clock knowing that he would miss the three… Not the first time either

by The Thinker on Nov 28, 2009 9:59 PM PST reply actions

I highly doubt it

Roy is a grown man and a professional, not a 6th grader. To me it seemed right along the lines of everything else out-of-sync the team did tonight.

by dulcamara on Nov 28, 2009 11:26 PM PST up reply actions

Okay

I think everyone in the NBA knows Miller can not shoot the 3, including Roy, so why give miller the ball on the 3 point line line with a couple seconds left? If Roy is the superstar that we think he is and has the Basketball IQ that we think he does then he knew exactly what he was doing giving the ball to “no chance for a 3” Miller. Roy should have taken the shot him self or tried to draw the foul.

He probably passed to Miller because he was the most open since everyone knows you don’t have to guad him at the 3-point line.

by hollywood robinson on Nov 30, 2009 1:16 PM PST up reply actions

Sounds like Miller needs to learn some of Trout's game

If miller took one step over that three point line he could hit the shots, just like Travis used to do two season’s ago.

by NWfan on Nov 30, 2009 2:57 PM PST up reply actions

Muscle memory.

He’s used to making that pass. Usually, it’s to someone who can shoot. His thought process is probably: “Get a shot. It’s not there. Plan B.”

That’s a lot to read into a play that develops in the span of five seconds or less. Do you really think he’s so passive aggressive as to further demoralize his team?

Keep your expectations low and you won't be disappointed.

FBP Defined

As a few have voted “What’s an FBP”, let me propose the definition as:

FBP: a pass, from one Blazer teammate to another, with 3 or 2 seconds left on the shot clock… the recipient’s ONLY choice is to shoot the (blech) shot…

Funny, while I’m sure Nate would think his defense a resounding success if he was able to force the other team into such a shot at the buzzer… he seems to think it an acceptable ending option to his #1 offensive set play…

by Visionary2 on Nov 28, 2009 10:07 PM PST reply actions

Roy had a couple of nice FBPs to Bayless also which account for two of his misses.

Whether your preference is watching or playing, basketball is a TEAM game.

pretty odd too, considering Roy is supposed to be so great at getting his OWN shot

I guess when it is sanctioned play it is OK.

I would call it the “I PUT THE TURD IN YOUR POCKET” play.

Thanks. Nice to have a name for this, if only to have it pinned down.

In the case of Blake: what team would guard him closely? And just receiving the pass generates a kind of rhythm which helps him shoot the shot.

And Travis tends to find his equilibrium while in midair, in that he has a little double-clutch at the top of his his jump.

But this sort of shot is just not in Miller’s repertoire. It’s just not.

Our Guards Are Confused

Fairly often Blake dribbles right underneath the basket but NEVER turns around to shoot it, sometimes it seems like his only comfortable shot is the three (as long as someone else creates the play). But when it’s Andre or Bayless, strong inside scorers, Roy is kicking it out to them behind the arc with no time to drive. Maybe they are wearing each other’s socks or something.

blake is one of the few people in the league

who’s fg %age overall is about identical to his 3 pt %age. part of this is taking a huge percentage of 3 pt shots. part of this is having a really low percentage on 2 point shots.

so yes when blake dribbles inside he’s not in his element.

by colinmarsh on Nov 29, 2009 10:39 PM PST up reply actions

It's hilarious

When Blake dribbles right through and underneath the basket. There’s no purpose, really. It’s almost like he’s sighing in relief he didn’t get hammered or turned the ball over. Reminds me of a guy who psyches himself out to make a move on a girl and then suddenly chickens out: “Yeah, I’m going in, I’m going in…Phew! glad I got out of that!”

Because he can get a shot up over just about everyone while being off balance 20 to 23 feet off the rim

If he ends up with the ball 2-3 seconds before the shot clock expires because nobody else wants it, especially not Blake or Roy. If the ball instead ends up with Miller or Oden or LMA, you’re in for a very low percentage shot.

what's interesting about this is

how hard it is for players to adjust on a minute by minute basis to changes in the lineup. you can’t expect roy, in a split-second, to think, wait I can’t make that pass because it’s miller not blake or outlaw standing on the three-point line. He’s made that pass a hundreds of times for the last couple of years, and as visionary2 points out, outlaw and blake are very good at hitting this shot—there’s nothing like a 3-point dagger hit at the 24-second buzzer to demoralize the other team.

Roy has been criticized for suggesting that chemistry and not effort has been a problem for the Blazers this year. But it’s pretty darn obvious that he’s just being honest. The Blazers were built around having 3-point shooting point guards and small forwards in the lineup. I like Miller, but it’s clear he’s not suited to penetration bailouts.

by blazingjim on Nov 29, 2009 9:14 AM PST reply actions

If what you say is true then it is even more important that Andre stay well inside that 3 point line.

Steve Blake IS a one-man FBS

If he doesn’t find someone to tag with instant horrible shot, he takes a moving, floating, wild mid-range shot of his own. I exaggerate a little, but he also only makes—a little.

Blake and Roy both generate a lot of "flaming bag" passes...

But the real master of the FBP offense was Sergio Rodriguez.
