Saturday Secret Junk - 81 Game Seasons Rock!

Happy Saturday!  I can't believe the NBA cancelled all of last night's games out of the blue like that, shortening the game to an 81 game season.  I got to the Rose Garden and was told the only entertainment of the night was a free concert for the Fish radio station.  Strange.

In any event, it's secret Saturday.  I don't want your kinky secrets.  I just want to know what your hobbies are that your Bedge-friends probably don't know about.  Is Mortimer secretly into crochet?  Does Roybot have a secret welding fetish?  Is TIH the leader of the "Bring back Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman fan club?"

When I was little I used to lock my friends in the toy chest just for fun.

All our numbers were bound to take a hit after last night.

Honestly, our numbers had been shiny, but that wasn’t reflected in the play we’d been seeing on the court. A correction was overdue, and it was a nasty one last night.

There's definitely reason to be concerned

I’m hopeful the tough schedule will bring the team together. But I think it will take more than Steve Blake throwing chairs.

by Timmay! on Nov 28, 2009 8:57 AM PST up reply actions

Part of me expects the Blazers to respond strongly tonight

The other part of me saw the players’ reactions to Nate calling them out. Nate’s called players out in the media for years, and I think he’s gone to that well once too often and it’s dry.

On the other hand, there’s never been a sign that the team doesn’t play with pride. They’ll want to make up for yesterday.

by faith on Nov 28, 2009 9:10 AM PST up reply actions

I'm honestly not worried about them smiling at the end of the game

That’s pretty common in the NBA on the bad side of a blowout. Usually it’s someone just trying to lighten up the mood after a long day. Happens in lots of workplaces, but most workplaces aren’t televised.

If they don’t show signs they took the loss seriously in the next few games, that’s a much bigger cause for concern.

by Timmay! on Nov 28, 2009 9:13 AM PST up reply actions

Really? You think Nate calls out players in the media too much?

I think he’s pretty protective of his guys and doesn’t use that tactic very often. Less than a lot of coaches.

by Corvid on Nov 28, 2009 10:15 AM PST up reply actions

He calls individual players out more than I'd personally like

At least a few times per season.

I wish I could find one of the incidents last year. Nate complained about Portland’s defense. Called out Brandon, Sergio, and I think someone else (which was funny, because everyone was struggling on D). When KP was asked afterward, he basically said it’s a team defense problem, and (I’m paraphrasing) blaming individual players was a cop-out. It was strange to read. If felt like KP was taking a shot at Nate without naming him.

I’m of the viewpoint that if a coach has to call out a player publicly, he’s no longer able to communicate with them very well privately. The more times you publicly call out players, the clearer it is that you no longer have any pull with them privately.

[The exception to this is Phil Jackson, who uses the media for basic motivational techniques and gets away with it. I don’t enjoy his approach.]

by Timmay! on Nov 28, 2009 10:32 AM PST up reply actions

I remember the Sergio thing, for sure -- mostly because it seemed so un-Nate to focus on one player.

I don’t like calling out players publicly either, but ALL coaches do it at some point or another. Some coaches do it when they’re extremely frustrated; other coaches do it out of habit or for good, ole finger-pointing reasons. I’m in the camp that Nate’s comments stem from frustration. On the whole, he speaks in generalities even when it’s clear that individual players are having problems — that’s one of the reasons his comments are so boring and predictable.

After all I’ve read in the press, I seriously doubt that Nate’s having communications problems with Brandon and can’t connect with him on a private level.

by Corvid on Nov 28, 2009 11:00 AM PST up reply actions

I'm definitely less worried about his relationship with Brandon, even if a few cracks have shown.

I’m more bothered when he’ll say things like “Andre and I haven’t talked”… the thing is he’s the coach. I don’t care if you have an open door policy, it’s your job to actively seek out a person if there’s a problem, not go to the press and say “well we haven’t talked, I have an open door policy and he hasn’t talked to me”.

There are a few coaches who do their best not call out players to the press, unless specifically asked about a player’s performance. Pop is one of those guys. The rare times he does do it, it has more impact.

by Timmay! on Nov 28, 2009 11:16 AM PST up reply actions

We're not contenders this year.

I think our games played so far has shown that. Of course, it’s not to late to turn that around. It’s not like we’ve been playing so bad that the playoffs are in question.

The team has plenty of time to make adjustments and gel.

“Adjustments” applies to the player, coach and even the GM if necessary. We could look at this start (a 12-6 start no less!) as a hiccup before the season took off.

But it sure doesn’t feel that way today, no denying that.

What would be your "all defensive" team"?

I’m starting to become increasingly frustrated with how Roy plays on D, not to speak of Blake & Co. When I called him out a bit, I just thought “who would be a good role model”? I e.g. think Kobe’s defense is overrated, but it’s a lot better than what Brandon does.

My lineup would probably be something like this:
PG Kidd, Paul, Rondo
SG Iguodala, then nothing for quite some time
SF James, Wallace
PF Garnett, Young (Amare can be damn good when he tries, but too often he doesn’t)
C Howard, Joel (from last year)

Did you know we would qualify for a roster exemption? If Nate and KP wanted, they could e.g. call up a D-League player

The league requires that teams have at least four players who have missed three games and aren’t expected to return for two weeks. A petition for a roster exemption must be filed every two weeks.

Currently the Warriors qualify and have done that for Chris Hunter. But the Blazers qualify, too.
Nic, Travis are out long-term, and Mills and Pendergraph aren’t ready either before Christmas. So Nate doesn’t have to complain about the team missing “bodies” if he wanted to.

I don’t think so, all four are listed as “out” in the team notes. Our lineup at the moment is Aldridge, Bayless, Blake, Cunningham, Fernandez, Howard, Miller, Oden, Przybilla, Roy, Webster. 11 players. We have more active players than the Warriors did (they were in danger of falling under the limit of 8 and then did), but that’s not in the rules.

You have to, take d-league players, free agents, coaches, whatever.

Section 1. Active Roster Size.
Each Team agrees to have twelve (12) players on its Active List and to have a minimum
of eight (8) players on the bench for all Regular Season games. Notwithstanding the foregoing,
any Team may from time to time as appropriate, but for no more than two (2) consecutive weeks
at a time during the Regular Season, have eleven (11) players on its Active List.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Blazers have filed a petition but just haven't acted on it

They’ve done that sort of thing in the past — filed the paperwork just to keep the options open, even if they don’t use the exemption. I bet they’d act on it if they saw a guy who REALLY intrigued them, but for the time being, it’s not worth it to pull in another body who wants playing time. Despite the shortened roster, there still are guys who deserve more minutes than they’re getting. Yeah, it’d be nice to have an extra body for practice, but so far this season it hasn’t been an issue — the schedule’s been so tight that there haven’t been many heavy-duty practice sessions.

by Corvid on Nov 28, 2009 3:05 PM PST up reply actions

Unless a team can't suit 8 healthy players, it shouldn't get a roster exemption.

The Portland Trail Blazers are a far cry from reaching that point, which the Golden State Warriors managed to do earlier this season.

As homertastic as this sounds

I think Oden would b putting Dwight’s numbers to shame if he could get 30+ mpg/stay out of foul trouble. GO’s offensive game already looks more refined than Dwight’s for my money, and he has a much better touch.

fouls is about it at this point, crazy as that sounds.

Dwight is still a lot more explosive— catch/dunk— but Oden already has just as many moves and can actually hit FTs.

Oden is a per minute monster right now.

that’s the thing! Oden actually has a better block rate, is a superior post defender (Dwight really struggles, as Yao said.) and is an extremely efficient post player who hits free throws.

Fouls are all that separate Oden from being arguably the best center in the game. AND he’s in his second real season, it being reasonable for him to get 3-5% more athleticism back next year.

He is the future.

That team of yours wouldn't win a title, especially with three putrid defenders.

If I had a “Twin Tower” frontline of Greg Oden at the 5 and Brook Lopez at the 4, a defensive stopper at the 3, Brandon Roy at the 2, and Kirk Hinrich at the 1, then your team would be crushed easily.

Did that big time guard get eligible yet?

I remember OSU scored a 4 star SG out of California, but there were some NCAA issues holding him up. OSU will be in the middle of the Pac 10 this year, I think the NIT is a realistic bet, but if they’re playing well by conference tourney time, who knows.

Geez, who will be the Western playoff teams? New Orleans has been bad, OKC has been decently good, Utah has been mediocre, and Houston is falling back to earth now that teams have learned of Ariza’s inability to effectively dribble.

Man. Portland, LA, Denver, Phoenix, Dallas, and San Antonio should get in…. but those seven-eight spots will be much weaker.

I am SO EXCITED that OKC is winning. They will never have any semblance of interior defense! YAY!

they still don’t stack up to teams with good bigs, though. It will perpetually kill them until they get someone who can really shut off the paint.

We couldn’t match up with them better. We have a lanky, physical three and a lanky, quick three who both love to grind it out on defense, a scoring two to attack their lack of wing defense, and two huge advantages in the frontcourt.

BRP is insane. He asked this question 10/26, little did we know.

Question of the day:

If you had only one choice, which would you pick:

A) Blazers get to the All-Star break at 31-10 without Greg averaging a double double
B) Greg gets an All-Star nod because he averaged 17/11/1.5 and our record is 25-16

Obviously in reality, those two probably would go hand and hand but if you had a choice which one would it be? I’m leaning heavily towards option B.

Have a great work/school day folks!

Well, Greg isn’t getting enough minutes due to Nate and fouls, but he’s been arguably a top center per minute, all we could ever hope for from second-year Greg.

So…. I think we still all take B.

i cry for nic

by Cablinasian on Nov 28, 2009 2:21 PM PST reply actions

yeah, agreed

The insane thing about Oden is that he’s 4th among Cs in Hollinger’s EWA even with all the foul trouble, only behind Duncan, Howard and Marc.

You can actually make a reasonable statistical case that Marc should start at C and Greg should be his backup. Of course, Amare is still a lock and Bynum will probably join him.

Prognosticating that in the future statisticians who didn’t watch him live will pull him down because he was too inefficient. He describes the kind of players he had to play with, and how awesome he was to watch live at the games. I would have to agree, though I would put him a little lower.

First inclination is that I’m drawn to doing the goddess pose ;)

I actually got reeally into restorative poses when I was injured because about a week into fracturing one foot my other foot and hands got pretty beat up from overcompensating.. so I decided I would take it easier on my body and allow some healing to actually occur…

lol funny story

last night me and my friend went to the game right? well we parked in the parking garage my mom uses for work downtown on the waterfront at like 6. we walked like 2 blocks to the max station. first one comes by, full. next one comes by, full. so we decided to start walking to the rose garden. we stopped at the last station right before the bridge to try and get on that max, full. so we walk over the bridge and look out into the Willamette and it is absolutely filthynasty. we ended up taking like a half hour walk from the parking garage to the rose garden.

idk why i just shared that

Comparing some super-zoom and digital SLR cameras. Man this isn't easy.

I love dpreview.com, together with the Amazon reviews that gives a pretty accurate picture. I guess ultimately I’ll have to decide between good image quality above iso 400 and a much larger zoom at a much lower price.

Until now I had a Sony Superzoom camera, and might go with their latest DSC-HX1. The Nikon 5000 and Canon 500 are just a bit too expensive with the lens ranges I would want.

His coaching legend was badly damaged in that famous first round series

He flinched first with his starting lineup change, and then the team got destroyed.

If he hadn’t made the lineup change, and the team still got destroyed, it likely wouldn’t have damaged him anywhere close to as badly.

Oden has been beat to a couple reboounds and also has been out checking Booz some away from the hoop

Not a good job by him though.

Stanford’s D is weak and Harbaugh gets too pass happy instead of giving the ball to Gerhart.

Rice is a current prof at Stanford, and former provost, and a big sports fan.

So, part of the problem is that teams have scouted and adjusted to Oden

It’s his term to adjust, not unlike when Brandon went onto all the scouting radars in season 2 and he had to modify his game.

Coaching of course will be vital for the adjustments.

by Timmay! on Nov 28, 2009 7:34 PM PST reply actions

Well, I don’t know—when you played like poop in the first half, and are down by a lot, do you try to mix it up early and see if you can posture yourself in a place to be in the game? Or is the other thought, we played bad, but maybe we’ll play better in the second half and we’ll build on that maybe—this line of thinking being, “don’t panic” something has to give. I assume we’re in the latter boat, cause not much has seemed to change….

by EvilKaramazov on Nov 28, 2009 7:42 PM PST up reply actions

whenever we play in utah, we would be lucky to get a win.

So if playing extra badly there is an impetus for us to analyze where we need to improve, I would deem this an acceptable loss. Hate to see it happen versus a division rival, but I would hate to see this worse in the middle or end of the season.

has anyone asked Nate about Oden's minutes?

there really is no excuse for him not to be playing over 30 minutes a night, especially considering how good he has looked and how much Joel has regressed since last year.

perhaps Nate wants to save his legs for later on this year, figuring he never has played a full 82 game season yet?

I would give Bayless and Oden more playing time than they “deserve” just to develop them this season/see what they can do. Blake and Joel will develop into nothing better than what we have, same with Miller but his level is higher. We don’t win a championship this year, but we also don’t in the future if we don’t fix our issues of “who’s the second guard” and “how to involve Greg and make him great”. Or make Roy into the PG and make Rudy the starting SG. But do something that points in the future.

I think the biggest impact his loss made

was it changed up all the rotations Nate had in mind to start the year — keep in mind Nic was hurt just before the first game of the year — and the Blazers haven’t figured it out yet, which leads to Roy talking about everyone not knowing their roles. If he’s healthy, then we never see the 3 guard lineup, for one thing.

What's to hear?

Norsk is right, copy and paste my rant from last night.

Oden needs to play more, be involved more, everything. I’ve always argued that.

After Nate came to the “right” conclusions with benching Howard for Dante, getting Bayless minutes, leaving Oden in after 2 first half fouls, I am not sure this is a coaching problem. And then you got Roy reminiscing about that dream season of yesteryear that resulted in a 1st round bomb. I say this is the players, and Nate was the same (for better or worse) as ever. Slow changing, but usually changing in the right direction.

Roy has to find that spark and get used to playing with Oden.

The biggest change I’ve undergone this season is believing we would— for sure— be better off with Paul Milsap as our starting PF. LMA has been very bad at all of the things a PF should do, and Oden will eventually completely supplant his post scoring. LMA has to adjust for that.

A rebounding, defending, role playing PF who can hit a jumper but not rely on it would likely fit us best, now that Oden is becoming our inside scorer who should be getting all of LMA’s shots.

LMA is still very tradeable, even this early into his not-yet-starting big deal. If we DIDN’T have an Oden, LMA would likely be scoring and rebounding a lil’ more, and pretty much no one else has an Oden. Most teams desperately need a big who can score, and would be happy to have a young one like LMA.

LMA has been too affected to being featured less on offense, giving him much less energy on defense. That is bad and dumb. He has to come to the realization that personal scoring stats and touches are meaningless in the big picture— you got your deal, you don’t need to play for a deal for a long time, now the focus is on whatever is best for the team.

I think he can come to the realization but he sure ain’t doing a good job of it right now.

Everyone is being pissy, everyone is tired, everyone is grumpy— players, coaches, and especially fans. It’s just a phase, if you want my honest opinion. I think most are all too eager to jump on the FIRE THE COACH bandwagon, as always… as if that sort of change will help, or correct the possible longterm problems of Roy getting used to Oden.

Roy is being so two-thousand-and-late now! It’s almost 2010, Roy, get with the times! The next decade is the Oden Decade, and Roy needs to be happy to be a part of it.

I gotta say, this will sound stronger than I mean it, but I blame Roy and LMA more than anyone. They are not fulfilling their promise as team leaders— and Roy gets the brunt of my blame. LMA is LMA, a 3rd option who is currently playing worse than that but fully capable of being a 3rd option. Roy is our heart and soul and the face of the team. His failure thus far to get everyone talking, on the same page, and figuring things out is, to me, so much worse than anything Nate is doing or not doing. As far as I know, anyways.

Oden had a tired, off game. Another reason to wish for him to have 30 minutes as much as possible (even in blow outs) is that he hasn’t gone through a full season of 30+ minutes a night, and that means he’ll never be fully conditioned until he can experience that. Fight through the dead legs of March and April. You can’t simulate it or know how to do it, until you do it.

Oden can’t hope to get a rebound if the Jazz never miss, of course.

I see no reason we can’t figure this out, with good progress being seen before the New Year most likely.

This is on the players, especially (as far as I can see) Roy, who needs to realize why we lost in the 1st round last season and work on us being a team that can go deep in the playoffs, and not a jump shooting team who can win 50+ games easily.

We’re still going to win a lot of games as we figure this out, but it can be a helluva lot smoother than it has been. I am pretty disappointed in a lot of our Blazer heroes right now.

I can see why people can be frustrated with Nate, but I can’t really see how we’re being out coached or mishandled right now. The players, especially the key non-Oden ones, aren’t doing what they are supposed to do.

by Mortimer on Nov 29, 2009 4:52 AM PST up reply actions   3 recs

If Roy plays harder on defense

Than he can get on others for slacking on defense.

If Roy involves Oden more, we’ll win more. If Roy is more open to changing the team for the better and not just recreating the best season in the history of the franchise, the championship 2008-09 season… we win more, at least in the long run.

I guess you can say “well bench Roy until he does those things”, but that won’t happen to any main player unless they are acting very poorly. And that creates a whole other enchilada and all but guarantees the season is lost.

The players ain’t doing what they should, combined with Nate perhaps taking a step back to let them figure it out when he should be more active in getting the key players together, and also combined with Nate’s slow changing ways… but to me, the problems begin and end when players aren’t doing what they know they should be doing, and not doing what they have done a million times before.

Oh, and Nate going to that damn 3 guard lineup just slowed things down. We woulda’ won those games if we started Bayless and Dante, doesn’t mean it was the correct decision. Going to a gimmicky lineup slowed down the development of becoming the team we want to be by April. That really annoyed me.

Now that I’ve thought about it more, I firmly believe this is a phase that sucks for now but we will forget about it in a few months, because things will have drastically changed. You gotta go through these growing pains early on, and we’ve been devoid of them mostly the last 2 years.

by Mortimer on Nov 29, 2009 5:09 AM PST up reply actions   2 recs

My hero

I agree with a ton of what you’ve said. I also think that a lot of the problems are coming to the surface because of the non-stop schedule. I spent some time last night looking at our schedule vs. other teams, and we’ve had it rough in a lot of ways — since the season started, the Blazers have had only one 2-day rest period and 5 back-to-backs. No other team has had to deal with this. Not only has this led to physical and mental fatigue, but the team simply hasn’t had much practice time to work out the snafus that come with new players and changed roles.

Brandon’s response to frustration, talking to the press — remember his contract frustration? — annoys me.

But since we REALLY don’t know what’s going on the the locker room and between the players and Nate, I’m going to hold back on the finger pointing.

by Corvid on Nov 29, 2009 10:25 AM PST up reply actions

I agree that they're tired

And are reacting in a tired, snippy way, and haven’t had a chance to slow down, rest, and analyze why things are off.

They need to talk, and think about everything.

Brandon’s golden touch with the media, and with dealing with his teammates, hasn’t been so lustrous this season. He needs to have an introspective moment and remember what he says carries much more weight than he has seemed to act thus far this season.

The first posts have been rather disappointing so far

I’ve been watching a video on my new iMac to get me in a better mood. And looked for some more camera info. I also have a good feeling about my JC score this month once the remaining Minny game is included, although some error did cost me 10 points.

You can spend weeks looking at camera stuff

My wife got me a new camera recently (the new Canon Powershot G11) and it’s amazing how much time you can spend looking at any given camera segment.

by Timmay! on Nov 28, 2009 10:14 PM PST up reply actions

I’ll probably decide between the Canon Powershot SX1 and the Sony DSC-HX1. I don’t think I’ll make the jump to a way more expensive SLR like the Canon D500 or D450. I have a good past experience with a Sony Superzoom camera, that’s the one I took to Africa and got amazing photos there. I’m not that happy with a smaller Sony I have, but they got that form factor pretty well under control. And you would have to pay twice as much for a remotely comparable camera with lens(es) for the Canon or Nikon SLRs. And I like the ability of both those cameras to record full HD movies. The Sony also makes up to 10 images per second and can stitch panoramas and piece together low-light images from 6 takes, so it’s usable if I ever get to a Blazers game this season :)

Andre Miller played 6:18, all in the 1st half. Mac said he “did not seem to be moving well.” After the game, Miller said he was fine. Hmmm.

anomalously high, I think. They did hit a lot of long two point jumpers in the third when we tried to mount our comeback.

Three things doomed us:

-Not playing basketball in the first quarter.
-Not keeping ourselves within ten in the final two minutes.
-Them hitting some crazy shots when we made a charge in the third.

I’m sad that we seem to have no working game plan, much less an alternative plan. Last year we could compensate for one star being off and work ourselves back into games even if down early. Now we are losing leads, and are getting blown out once down big. And since the cap space is used up and the roster full and Allen sick, I’m not sure how many changes we can expect other than this team getting it together themselves.

it always looks the worst right in the heat of the battle.

I could easily see a "down year" where we get owned in the playoffs as a 6-7 seed

followed by a “bounce back” year where we get to the WCF.

I have more concerns than just LaMarcus though, namely Roy’s laziness, Oden’s fouls, Nate’s coaching and the general suckage of all our role players not named Rudy.

Roy is in a funk. I expect that he’ll come out of it. Oden’s foul trouble has been getting better this year…. Nate will be gone if we have a down year.

Also, championships are won with star players. If Roy and Oden are good, we can surround them with Batum, LMA, Rudy, and some decent replacement players.

They said that even traveling with the team, it’s not the same vibe as last year. Pressure does this, the stakes have been raised. I can’t even blame this on Quick trying to stir the pot, these guys are just plain out of sorts right now. Nate needs to get a handle on this, and quite frankly, he could use some help from KP in the form of consolidation, if only for the sake of defining roles. What a difference a year makes…

I think I'm fonder of Nate than many here

and I’m not sure a new coach is the answer. Van Gundy is just as abrasive, and probably more so than Mac. I think the real problem is what Frye hinted at in some of his post-Portland interviews: too many young, talented guys trying to establish themselves for one squad/coach to handle. I’m starting to turn more and more toward AK’s view that KP needs to properly balance this roster, in terms of personnel and their roles, for any coach to be successful here.

let’s go over the common complaints of Nate.

-Has never coached a good defensive team.
-Hasn’t had a team that scores well in the paint.
-Panics, and when doing so clings to what is conservative.
-Fails to adjust quickly, shown best in playoffs.

Add to this the fact that the team has now tuned him out… I don’t think we bend over backwards to make it work.

What bigs has he involved, before doing it lots now with Lopez?

I can only remember them having guard dominated play, and now with Lopez they have no other options.

UCLA called timeout when USC was running out the clock. So SC threw the ball and scored a 50 yard touchdown on a simple streak down the middle of the field. Ultimate middle finger in football form. A brawl nearly ensued.

Pete Carrol

is going to have something nasty for Stanford next year. I like the Cardinal (they’re my #2 team after UO, I went to grad school there) but Harbaugh pulled the tiger’s tail with that 2 point attempt up 27

The Blazerverse and The Wire: A comparison
Brandon Roy = Stringer Bell (smooth technician dedicated to his craft)
Nate McMiillan = Cedric Daniels (well intentioned leader, but he can be too rigid for his own good at times)
Martell Webster = Wee Bey Brice (straight up solider who follows orders; every organization needs these guys to be successful)
Jerryd Bayless = Marlo Stanfield (he's new to the game, but he's watching and waitng; he will take over and there will be casualties)
Rudy Fernandez = Jimmy McNulty (he gets results, but the leadership wishes he was less of a wild man; the ladies love him)
Greg Oden = Michael Lee (he started off a quiet kid, but he's beginning to tap in to his huge potential to change the game)
Andre Miller = Lester Freamon (do not let the laconic demeanor fool you, the veteran knows what's up)
John Canzano = Scott Templeton (scummy muckraker who stays up at night polishing his award)

Wow, I hadn't yet read that.

Oh, and by the way, TMZ reported Michael Jackson’s death.

At any rate, though, domestic abuse happens equally between both genders; however, advocates of misandry — such as sophia — want you to believe otherwise. They, though, are biased, sexist liars.

Hmm, I shouldn't be so hard on Sophia.

I just don’t like how men are treated in a sexist manner apropos of domestic disturbance calls. As someone who knows a few police officers, women are often arrested — even more so than men in some cases — when it comes to such house calls.

It’s a real issue that must be dealt with, but bigoted women who promote misandry won’t touch it. That pisses me off with a passion.

Quick's article feels like the biggest Blazer news story since the Grizz signed Miles

I’m still in “wow” mode over here right now. Assuming you can trust Quick, there were signs that Brandon was wondering why Miller didn’t play more, and Miller didn’t know. If that’s accurate, that means Brandon is eliminated as the person behind Miller’s minutes and benching.

This may get a little bit nuts.

The thing I wonder about is how Quick knows what the conversation

between the players was as they sat on the bench. Does he have a microphone stuck there? The quotes are another thing, though. That’s not good. Seems like there must have been a conversation between Brandon and Nate that changed their relationship. Wow.

Later, Roy and Aldridge talked, with Roy revealing that their conversation revolved around how different things had become this season.

Brandon told Jason the details of the conversations.

by Timmay! on Nov 29, 2009 12:58 AM PST up reply actions

The two most troubling tidbits...
The Blazers players are most concerned about the offense, which has undergone a decided change from last season, when Roy and Aldridge dominated the ball and shots with pick-and-roll variations. This season, with Oden becoming a formidable and effective option, the offense more often revolves around entry passes to Oden.

McMillan says it is up to the players to figure out how to make that dynamic work. The players say the system now isn’t working because both Roy and Aldridge are struggling.

Really, its up to the players to figure out how to run an offense that works? At least Roy told it like it is.

Roy was reminded that Oden has been effective, entering the game second in the NBA at 63.2 percent, and when asked how all three offensive options can work together, he chuckled.

“I don’t know. That’s why coaches coach,” Roy said. “I just go out there, you know? He’s the coach.”

This is the first time that I get the feeling that Nate is losing this team, as well as being legitimately exposed for his lack of creativity on offense…

Nate's tendency to put blame on the players is getting very, very old...

Although, I do put the majority of the blame on the players these last two games, they didn’t play with any effort by my eyes. Who knows if that is because of frustration with the way the team is being coached though…

wow

seems like a lot of our speculation seems to be validated a bit by that article. I didn’t like how Miller conducted himself prior to the start of the season, but since we went away from the 3G lineup…he has been incredibly professional…even more so than Brandon. I’ve complained a lot about Nate over the years…but I’m not going to blame him for the results of these past 2 games….this one is on our players again. I dont want Nate to be the scape goat just yet. He was put in an incredibly tough position and has lost his best bench scorer and best perimeter defender.

Oh how much can change in one month....

October 26, 2009

McMillan, meanwhile, has gone to Roy, wondering whether he had lost the team, and feeling like he was being tuned out. And constantly, McMillan is summoning Roy to his office in order to determine the pulse, or as McMillan calls it, “the temperature of the team”.

“The best way I can put it is, Brandon gets it,” McMillan said. “Both on and off the court, he gets it.”

McMillan quickly discovered that Roy wasn’t just an exceptional player. He also had an active mind, keenly perceptive, and astutely analytical. He thought very much like a coach.

Soon, their meetings became more like conversations. And then the conversations turned into lengthy dialogues and debates. The next thing both knew, they were co-piloting the team.

But it was a tricky spot for Roy. As his relationship with McMillan grew, he said he became leery of being viewed as “Coach’s pet.” To prevent that perception, he says he has been transparent.

“I try to be honest with both sides,” Roy said. Late last season, he gained the players’ trust with this role.

November 29, 2009

“I don’t know. That’s why coaches coach,” Roy said. “I just go out there, you know? He’s the coach.”

Roy said he has seen this coming for weeks.

“I’m not sitting here totally surprised by it,” Roy said. “There were times when we won games and we still don’t seem to have it. It’s kind of right in our face now. … I just don’t think people fully understand. They were like, ‘We won 6 of 7,’ but I’m like, ‘Nah, I’m still a little concerned how things are going right now.’ Because I don’t think anyone is really seeing the light at the end of the tunnel right. Meaning nobody knows how to fix it.”

What happened? If Brandon saw it coming, why didn’t he explain this to Nate and try to fix it before it started?

IMO it sounds like Brandon and Nate disagreed about this problem potentially coming and now Brandon is kind of punishing Nate for not trusting him. Any other theories?
