Gameday Open Thread: Blazers vs. Jazz--Pre-Game Edition

OK, we've all washed last night's debacle from our memories, right?  Mind bleach!  Mind bleach!  There we go.  Tonight is a new night and a chance to start a new winning streak.  While you're waiting for the game to start discuss the Blazers' chances, strategies, and why it's so infernally hard to win in Salt Lake City.  Please be respectful, keep it clean, and no links to or requests for streaming video sites other than the Blazers' official (and legal) one.

unlike many of the negative nellies around here

I support my team. Games like last night happen. It doesn’t bother me one iota.
Besides, I was encourage the guys fought back and never quit. A lesser team would have thrown in the towel.

Looking at the bright side

I do give the blazers credit for that. However, they didn’t have an ounce of fight int he first half and the defense was horrible. ahem… aldridge…

What bothers me was the lack of passion highlighted by Aldridge rolling out the red carpet for Zach and Roy not noticing that the shock clock was running out until the croud started yelling at him.

how can the blazers NOT be upset at themselves over that first half effort?

"Fernandez, to my eyes, is the Blazer who walks that walk most comfortably. A lot of Portland's fans (egged on, dare I say, by their local broadcasters) lament things like how Ron Artest or Yao Ming get to hit Brandon Roy's arms.

But I suspect Fernandez sees all that and thinks: We get to hit arms! Cool!"

the PTB had a 15-11 lead and it didn't look that bad

then it all went south. Not sure what happened honestly. I have to give Memphis credit. They were hot and in sync. Portland looked flat and dejected which is uncharacteristic.

Roy not being aware of the game clock before halftime was not excusable. The guys heads were just not in the game at that point.

I’m confident the team can rebound with a good game tonight.

Personally I hope we keep this inconsistent play going....

Might lose some of those bandwagon fans that way. Stink it up till all-star then make a trade and sneak into the playoffs. Under the radar.

Chad Ford on Oden, "He's definitely a defensive force... I don't think he'll ever put up the big numbers that Shaq did. But he could be the best big man defender in the league... frankly, having a 7 footer that can do that will produce more rings than a 6-11 small forward who can score 30 ppg. That was the thinking all along why GMs preferred Oden to Durant. KD is the sexier player and as an offensive player there is just no comparison. KD is great. Oden is aspiring to average. But defensively, Oden could be dominant. KD ... not so much."

Could have said it better myself. Thanks Mr. Ford!

Your shooting too low

If we can maintain the intensity from last night it just might be possible that to get a lottery pick for 2010. Maybe even #1. Dreams of John Wall. Of course Wall would play behind Blake for the first 5 or 6 seasons.

Rick adelman
Phil Jackson

Rick is my first and foremost choice. My concern is the lack of defense he’d bring. (grumble grumble then again, we’re not playing defense anyway based on the last game…)

Not me, but someone on Third Quarter Collapse did the math, and I put it in a Fanshot
Road Foul % averaged 50.96%, with a standard deviation of 0.81%, meaning the range was 49.34% to 52.59%. There were three deviants, one low and two high. The low was Violet Palmer, whose crews called only 48.8% of fouls against the road team. High were Courtney Kirkland (52.6%) and Ron Garretson (52.8%)."

I suppose it could be a hidden reason why fans don’t like her. If she calls ever so slightly more fouls on the home team than the road team (more than the statistical standard deviation), fans could notice that subconsciously. Of course they always suspect the refs to screw their team, but here they data backs them up somewhat.

Tonight we need to initiate a Mike Rice Drinking Game...

I’m convinced he would approve…

“He Can Do That” = drink

complains about a ref = drink

says the word “turkey” in any context = drink

Supposedly nobody wants to adopt black pets.

Personally, I wouldn’t adopt pit bull-related pets of any color, but that’s just me.

I would definitely take a young pitbull from a shelter

Like any dog, their attitude is reflection of their owner. It just happens that a lot of dumb, terrible owners want pit bulls….

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
