Brian T. Smith is pro-McMillan
"They are thrown out on the cheap, posted by anonymous persons hiding behind a computer screen and using the invisibility of the Internet as a cloak. And they inevitably follow a Portland Trail Blazers loss."Fire Nate!!!" some scream. Others are more precise, questioning whether Blazers coach Nate McMillan has any idea what he is doing as one of 30 men leading professional basketball teams in the cutthroat business otherwise known as the NBA. The critics pick and rip McMillan apart, all while offering up free, expert, anonymous advice."

I don't know if Nate's a good coach or not...
but I do know that Brian T. Smith needs to cool it on the one sentence paragraphs.

Andre Miller should play more; Steve Blake should play less.
Brandon Roy should touch the ball more; Roy should touch it less.
Greg Oden needs to become the focus of Portland’s offense; Rudy Fernandez deserves to start; Travis Outlaw has no game.

OH excuse me, and sports columnists.

No doubt
He seems like a good guy and I hope he goes far, but man— I hate those one sentence paragraphs, even if it wasn’t a staple of Johnny Canz.
It doesn’t HELP that that is Canz reprehensible pseudo-meaningful style, but it ain’t because of that. It is ugly to look at (especially online, with the wide columns), and feels forced.
I like the quotes from the Players.

You know, two of the three paragraphs in your comment were one sentence long.
Also, your face is a one sentence paragraph.
(Also, I agree)
Ahem
It’s called sarcasm. Morty (and TiH) are veteran practicers of the dark art.

You bring up a good point...
(did I just say that about you?….smh….)
…about the difference between reading online and in print. Smith was trained to write in print, with the resulting narrow colums. Many paragraphs that look good online would be huge, dense overly-long paragraphs in print. And those one secntence paragraphs, which tend to look OK in print, just look awkward online.

One guy's opinion who's been covering the Blazers for two months s/b required reading?

Considering he's shown greater perception in that short time ...
… than a large number of posters here have shown after a couple years or more …. yeah, I’d say so.

Brian T. Smith is incapable of covering the Blazers for the Columbian
It’s one thing to cover the Blazers for a podunk Clark County fish wrap, but the Columbian is beginning to come into it’s own and reader expectations are growing exponentially . I don’t think Brian has the tools to make the Columbian a contender. Sorry – I just don’t.
Don’t get me wrong, I like Brian and what he’s done for us so far, but he’s in way over his head. I think his editors know this and already beginning to tune him out.
Fire Brian. I know America’s number 1 sports columnist does occasionally rankle the fans here, but we need to get him in here pronto. Get it done KP!

I've liked his stuff so far, this 'piece' not so much
I also don’t like the knowledge that a beat writer is so blindly in live with Nate. That doesn’t really ensure unbiased coverage.

No wonder you don’t want to hold hands and sing songs.

"McMillan has made all the right moves." - Brian Smith
That statement is a little bit toooo Pro-Nate. Nobody ever makes ALL the right moves. Better to say, “Nate has made mostly the right moves and adjustments.”
Too much politics. Too much jockeying for inside position is what I think. But that’s their job… They need to write in such a way as to not disturb their long-term abilities to access important people surrounding the team.
Nate is probably the best coach for the Blazers because of his experience building relationships with the existing players. It’s probably magnitudes more gratifying to win a championship with Nate having been here for several years than to win with anybody else.
No joke.
He made ALL the right moves? Like having Joel guard Yao straight up in the playoffs? Like starting Outlaw over Batum at the beginning of last season?
I don’t think Nate is a bad coach, but he certainly isn’t infalible.

The funny thing is that a lot of what people have complained about has come to fruition
Things people wanted to see, and Nate obliged:
Ditching the 3 guard lineup
Cunningham over Howard
Less Blake, more Rudy and Miller
Finding a way to get Bayless into the rotation, even in a very small role
Finding more minutes for Webster
Ditching the foul per quarter thing for Oden
Feeding the ball into Oden more
Really, the only thing that people have consistently whined about that hasn’t happened yet, is starting Andre Miller, maybe we aren’t as dumb as Mr. Smith seems to think we are…
RUDY > MJ
there would be more complaning if outlaw wasn't hurt
bayless leaves over my dead body
Start Andre (in a 2 guard lineup)

Nice quote from Andre
And realizing that sometimes the hardest thing about teaching the game to young pro athletes is grasping the contradiction that lies at the heart of the job.
“It’s hard to teach guys that are already on the professional level, that are already that good,” Miller said. “And then they’re young — a lot of them deal with a lot of egos and stuff like that. He’s showed that he can teach at this level and still allow guys to play. And that’s pretty hard to do in this league.”
As I read the article, I thought of Dwight Jaynes. If BT Smith has been reading Dwight’s blog for 6+ months (or watching Talkin’ Ball) I could see where he’s come to some of these conclusions, because Jaynes will never give Nate any slack. No matter what decision McMillian makes, there will always be a better “answer” eminating from the deck of the house boat.
Now, perhaps Smith frequents Blazersedge and reads the fans “vitriol” re: Nate, especially in the game threads? Or maybe he reads the O-live chat pages? Who knows, but it really doesn’t matter, because fans have been questioning the strategies of coaches and the front office for as long as there has been organized sports— professional or amateur. The difference nowadays is that there’s internet and talk radio and it’s easier to get your “opinion out there” to thousands of readers, instead of just Joe and Sam at the water cooler. For any columnist to think he can stem the tide of “arm-chair” coaches and GMs spouting their “takes” through the mass media is comical, and certainly not informative or entertaining reading.
It’s hard to feel sorry for coaches and players who’s jobs are so scrutinized…after all, they’re living the American dream and being well-compensated for playing a kid’s game and earning indecent amounts of money. I think McMillian has it pretty easy in this town, actually, and he should be grateful that the Portland job became available at just the time when things were turning sour, up in Seattle. He could be coaching anywhere, right now—in Memphis, Minnesota or maybe even Phoenix, if he was lucky. His team’s home games could be in front of apathetic fans in half-filled arenas. So, if the only “price” he has to pay for the intense fan atmosphere at the Rose Garden is that he has to hear about a few fans or columnists second-guessing his lineups and rotations (2nd hand, since I doubt he goes looking for “our” input) then he’s a lucky man, indeed. He could be coaching in Philly, or New York, where the media is even less-pandering and the fans are less-forgiving of setbacks.
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
I've noticed that it is common for people to confuse their "right" to voice any criticism ...
… they choose (particularly when there is no responsibility or consequences attached to doing so) with what is courtieous behavior.
I believe a simple rule should be that you don’t voice a comment that you wouldn’t be willing to say to the subject’s face. I think that’s one of the points Smith is trying to make. Just because we can voice our opinion to a wider audiance does not absolve us of the requirement to treat people in a respectful manner. And just because McMillan is being paid a lot of money, or is “fortunate” to have gotten the Portland job when he did does not make him exempt from the rules of civil discourse.
One thing is certain – McMillan has earned what he has and the respect that goes along with it. What is far less certain is what posters on Internet blogs have earned and how much respect they deserve. I think Smith is dead on in making that point.
hakkaa päälle !
It seems strange to me
That Smith would to hold to the opinion that to believe that there should a coaching change and to express that view publically would require the anonimity of the internet.
Does Nate have a posse that goes around beating people up that I don’t know about?
No, but people routinely use language that would get them dope slapped in a bar.
The internet greatly exaggerates the apparent size of the cojones on folks who might normally be thought of as mouthbreathers.
Well..
what would you expect a fan to say?
“I believe the time has come to allow Nate Mcmillian the freedom to pursue new and exciting financial opportunities !” ?
Everyone wants to be a real GM , not a real President of Basketball Operations.
I have not been harshing on Nate this season so much
He has a lot to deal with, and look at his record.
That said, I really loathe the logic that says that someone must be doing a good job because they got the job in the first place. Some kind of backwards reasoning. You hear this also as an explanation for why there are no conspiracies. Because if there were, surely someone in a position of authority would have done something about it.
I’m not saying Nate is incompetent, I’m saying there are plenty of people in positions of influence who are and this is no effective defense against criticism.

Ceterum censeo Lakers esse delendam
I mean
I guess what he says is technically accurate, but I wonder why so much energy covering (and skewering) fans when his job is to cover the team. Plus he has a disturbing tendency to overstate and stereotype when he does these columns. Add to that…he’s being selective. What about the new-age media policy of “If it bleeds, it leads”? What about writers and people who cover the team blurring the line between reporting and celebrity, getting paid in fields where you get more famous for being more dramatic and/or controversial? Where are those columns?

I really miss Brian Hendrickson.
Brian T Smith amuses me only because he kept spelling Przybilla wrong for a week after he was corrected multiple times. I still really want Hendrickson back though; he was by far the best journalist covering the Trailblazers and digging into all aspects of the game.
