POLL: Do the readers of BlazersEdge want The Oregonian and 95.5 to fire John Canzano?

Canzano's yellow journalism has hit a new low in fostering hatred for the Blazers' star player Brandon Roy. Is it time to call for an end to Canzano's tenure as a paid sports writer and radio personality in Portland?

Canzano has reached a new low in showing his willingness to call out Roy in a way that is coloring his actions with the national sports media. These are not jail blazers and should not be treated that way. Are we going to let trash stand as journalism in Portland? Are we going to stand by as the local paper drags these stellar young men through the mud until they've had enough of trying to play in this town?

I have had enough.  I don't want to switch on 95.5 and find myself listening to hate radio against the team I love instead of the pre-game show I want.  And I am done buying The Oregonian ever again until Canzano's brand of yellow journalism is no longer tolerated on its pages.  Please let your voice be heard.

I want to make this clear:

Canzano loves Roy. He has said ,over and over, how he is blessed to cover an athlete as humble and gracious as Roy. I have talked to John on many occasions and he is not as bullish and egotistical as many people on this site think of him. I think his column was meant to take a more sarcastic and jovial tone than it did, and it got away from him.

if that's true it "Got away from him", by his own doing. He was the one driving his point of view on it so hard on the radio.

If it was not his intent to drive controversy, and paint Roy as a bad teammate, or being disrespectful of the national anthem and what it represents for this country, and the soldiers who have served in war, or a sign that Roy is a diva and holds himself in a higher regard than his teammates, his job, and this town then maybe he shouldn’t have said those things on the radio every time his show came back from a commercial break. He guided the dialog on the subject during his own show yesterday, and at this point I’ve listened to his show long enough to not be surprised by this. But I do think he was being manipulative of public opinion and I’m not sure if that qualifies as responsible journalism.

OOOH, maybe he can go write for the Weekly World News! They’re always looking for pulp writers!

Oh hayyyyyyell no.

Did you even read the article? There isn’t the tiniest amount of sarcasm in that article. It was very serious. When Canzano found out about Roy’s pre-game ritual during the anthem, he ran with it.

Canzano is pretty much a total neo-con. No doubt. I heard one show once where he just went off on immigration and talking about how how much foreigners poison our country and so forth. He hides it pretty well, but you can tell just how radical far right if you listen carefully.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I don’t judge people by their political beliefs. I am great friends with a few neo-cons. Political beliefs do not make a person. And furthermore, I don’t in the slightest think he should be fired. He does his job, and does it well. His job is to be a total douche, and create controversy, and he hit the nail on the head with this one. I’m sure the Oregonian and 95.5 LOVE that article.

Instead of calling for his head we should just ignore him and encourage our friends to do the same for spreading that crap.

He should be fired, just not for his latest article, it sucked but it's not fire worthy

He should be fired because he’s not a very good writer, he fabricates stores, and often somehow finds away to insert himself into the story.

The guy is just looking for opportunities to yell “fire” in the theatre whenever he can. The good thing is he’s pretty full of himself, so he’ll leave if a bigger market comes calling. Until then, if you want to see him go, don’t listen to his show on 95.5, don’t buy the O, and let the station/editor know you want be patronizing their services as long as Canzano is there. Like others have said, Canzano is merely trying to drive traffic. When you let his employers know it’s not only failing to do that, but causing you to avoid anything he’s associated with, he becomes more of a liability than an asset.

The Blazerverse and The Wire: A comparison
Brandon Roy = Stringer Bell (smooth technician dedicated to his craft)
Nate McMiillan = Cedric Daniels (well intentioned leader, but he can be too rigid for his own good at times)
Martell Webster = Wee Bey Brice (straight up solider who follows orders; every organization needs these guys to be successful)
Jerryd Bayless = Marlo Stanfield (he's new to the game, but he's watching and waitng; he will take over and there will be casualties)
Rudy Fernandez = Jimmy McNulty (he gets results, but the leadership wishes he was less of a wild man; the ladies love him)
Greg Oden = Michael Lee (he started off a quiet kid, but he's beginning to tap in to his huge potential to change the game)
Andre Miller = Lester Freamon (do not let the laconic demeanor fool you, the veteran knows what's up)
John Canzano = Scott Templeton (scummy muckraker who stays up at night polishing his award)

guys,guys,guys...

this is unexpected from this site. This is somewhat classless in my opinion. To clarify, i absolutely think Canzano is a douche but and this is a huge but….if any of us were actyually in a position to have the authority to fire himyou all are saying you would?

Ok, i guess……this is a guy who outside of his awful perspective(which a supervisor or mentor or someone should coach him on) has never actually done anything wrong. Journalists have done far worse things (princess Diana comes to mind) and kept there jobs. I absolutely think that last Roy story was a grasp at something relavent and again he should be coached on this but not fired.

Guys this is the worst economy in our life times, or our parents life times for that matter and one should be very careful throwing around the “F” word. It is my opinion that all options should be exausted before resorting to essentially throwingsomeone out on the street with little to no job opportunities. I get your guys frustration i really do, but fired goes a little far in my opinion.

Cell phones have replaced home phones, Cable television has replaced extra curricular activities (movies, going to games) and Internet is fastest way to communicate with people, imagine how many more jobs you can apply for online vs. huffing it place to place. besides just because he has not had to give up those luxuries does not mean that other people still have them, we just don’t here their voices cause they lost their internet signal.

They're not that different

You pay for the luxury of the fastest way to communicate. Do you need the fastest way to communicate? Do you need to have a mobile phone? Land lines still exist, and are much cheeper. TV is a Massive luxury (I listen to all my blazers games). There are jobs out there. You may have to lower your pride and take a job that pays less than you want or with people you may not like. I’m working three jobs to afford my lifestyle, would I like to have one that pays better yes, but I’d rather be thasnkfull for what I do have.
I live in a country that allows me to have freedom, and will take care of me if times really do get tough. I know that I will have a roof over my head and food on my table.

The fact that people still have 50% of their retirement

and whine about whatthey’ve lost, shows how spoiled we are. Most people in the history of the world have not been able to vacation the last 20 to 30 years of their lives. Go live in a third word country for a while, come back and look in a grocery store and think about the amount of food there. Yes, times are not as good as they were two years ago, but they are not bad. If we think they are, we seriously need to redifine what we call “hard” or “bad”.

The most shocking part of that whole article was when he seemed to be lamenting that the government didn't have an agency dedicated to forcing observation of the anthem.

I mean, really, how deep do you have to dig, and how low do you have to stoop, to run a story going after the star player on a city’s favorite team because he exploits the fact that there isn’t a government agency to force him to do something.

I’ve always found him pompous, self-absorbed and more than a little “uninformed”, but this article made him seem downright stupid. Stupid for writing such an article. Stupid for then reading it and continuing to think it was a good article. Stupid for getting quotes from Roy for it and still thinking it was a good article.

I’ve always felt that he wasn’t worth listening to because he was driven by shock-jock tactics instead of actual content, but now I also know he’s not worth listening to because he’s simply and unintelligent source of information.

by JordanLeDoux on Nov 26, 2009 5:26 AM PST reply actions

It's pieces like this that will keep him employed forever.

It doesn’t matter if a writer is good or bad. It doesn’t matter if a writer makes the fan base happy or angry. What matters is that the writer gets read. And it’s pretty obvious, like him or not, he gets read. Of all the times I’ve seen people say they aren’t going to read him anymore, he gets more play than ever anytime he writes a Blazer-related article. He’s doing his job. He’s getting people to talk about his articles. Which means he’s getting more readers.

I don’t have a particular problem with the guy personally. He writes a far different genre than Quick, or Dave, or Ben, or any other journalist covering the Blazers. He brings people who aren’t necessarily sports fans in to read the sports page, which means the ads on the sports page are seen by more people. And that’s the biggest goal of the newspaper. That means that Canzano is doing his job perfectly in the eyes of his bosses.

The reason unemployment #‘s are not as high as they were, unemployment has ran out for a lot of people, in Oregon there are still a considerable amount of applications for one Job, there is still a pay freeze and hiring freeze at my work and the Oregonian is laying off people right and left (In fact the next big one is in the first week of January), yes it may not be the end all be all but its hard out there for job seekers,

stop being afraid of being poor
, I am poor what are you talking about… as for my original point I would not wish job loss on anyone in this economy, Canzano writes for a newspaper (if you can call the dribble they put in there news). his job is to write opinions that get a reaction, now don’t get me wrong, I don’t like him that much either but I guess that is why I don’t read him and turn the radio off when he is on. Boycott Canzano

The following is the message I just sent to the Oregon live “contact us” site.

“I am deleting O live from my sports bookmarks. I refuse to support John Canzano’s egotistical muckraking in any form or forum. The attacks on Brandon Roy for no other good reason but calling attention to the writer are the last straw for me. I have Looked back at the years I could not cheer on the team I desperately wished to support, destroying itself with illegal, immoral, arrogant acts. I agree with most people here that he was out of line, but having him around only adds to the range of opinions we get to over analyze here on Blazersedge. If we run Canzano and Simmons and everyone else with whom we disagree out of town, Rip City will be a far less interesting place.

I would love to see Roy find another time to have that moment, if nothing else, just to avoid the controvercy. Do I think Canzo should have pushed as hard as he did? I always change the radio channel when his show comes on. I’m tired of him trying to make something out of nothing. He uses glen beck tactics to stir controversy and honestly Oregon is not the place for that.

Hah! I read your comment afte rI posted mine. I agree completely.

He’s playing this city. Period. We are not any other city, this is not how we get down.

Land Rondo.

"He needs to realize that he can't stop every shot, especially from a smaller and offensively potent player. Get your hands up, make him shoot it over you, but let him shoot every once in a while. They score a little but you stay in the game a lot. And when you stay in the game...smashy smashy!" Dave on Greg Oden

Look

No Canzano, almost no drama. JQuick is probably pulling his crap just to keep up. I understand that works in some markets, but I don’t think us Blazer fans want that.

We just want to hear whats going on, help out with our support and possible input. We don’t want fake, blown-up drama clouding our airwaves. All this blown up, overboard drama is not what I want this market to be known as. He is the one asking players if they like being in this “fish-bowl” of a market, yet he is the one storring the water the most.

He sickens me at times, frankly. I literally turn the radio off when he’s on. I dont want to contribute by listening to his manipulative trash. To me he’s a tumor to this city.

Oden,Rudy, and Miller are playing well so far,

but they should go together in the tunnel during the anthem, and they will come out All-stars.

And Oden, once again, is a rookie, so non-stop fast break basketball is like fast-forwarding a song while he's trying to learn the lyrics.

I still maintain Canzano himself does not pay proper respect to flag and country during the anthem

cause instead facing the flag with hand over heart, he is looking around to find out whre Brandon Roy went. I was raised that while the national anthem was being sung, you place your hand on heart, fix your eyes on the flag and either join in singing, (if it is possible with how it is being sunf by the performer) or stand silently. I was not taught to stare at the other people around me, look down the halway or any other such thing as Canzano is doing during the anthem. The disrespect he shows to flag and country is appalling. Same with all of those people who cheer after the the land of the free, they are no longer following proper respectful protocol of silence and observance, they are not only interupting the performer of the song but showing a lack of respect by distracting from our devotional activity toward flaf and country…observe any man in uniform, they don’t even blink an eye during the anthem, let alone scream…

I'm still baffled.

This last column about Roy was one of the few he has written that I object to…and not because of what he wrote, just how he wrote it. I think Canzano was trying to make the point that Roy should be with his team during this moment of togetherness rather than by himself. He wasn’t disturbed by some perceived lack of patriotism or respect for the flag. However, if the column was not read carefully , that could be easily inferred because it wasn’t particularly well written. What he added as filler was where the anti-flag tone came from. It just wasn’t a great column…a little painful to read, actually, in it’s lack of focus.

Canzano’s articles are typically “not bad” to “good”. As a radio host he is actually pretty good, and he is one of the best interviewers I have ever heard on the radio.

Can it be all Canzano's fault?

I really think he is encouraged to write inflammatory pieces. No different then the MSP’s brand of barrel-bottom pablum. It shows what the dolers-out of these guys paychecks think of us, the audience, for them to continuously dispense their ill contemplations upon us.

Fired? Ummmm no.

Canzano"s job is to sell papers, and to get listeners on the air, and he does that quite successfully. Yes, he is controversial. Yes, he pisses people off. Yes, he commits low blows. He feeds his daughter by doing all these things, and he is good at it. Just look at how much conversation he creates on Blazer Sedge by his negative articles. The man is quite good at pissing people off. If you don’t like him, don’t listen to him.

I changed my mind in the last few seconds.

If you don’t like him, you should give him as many hits on his webiste you can. You should buy as many oregonians as you can, and tell them every day how much you love him. You should worship Canzano so he gets a national sports outlet sooner.

I mean seriously, he has to be close to getting a job offer from Yahoo, or ESPN, or some national sports media outlet. He was the #1 sports columnist in the country as voted by the AP last year….as if we could forget. He reminds us all the time.

He should not be fired for this

A much more fitting “punishment” is the Blazers players and organization freezing him out.

That was a disgusting, vile article… and I do not say that lightly.

I’m still peed off about it.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
