Wanna Blog for the Blazers???

This might be old news to you guys, but Henry Abbott is looking for some portland bloggers. I thought you guys might be interested.

http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/11032/wanted-one-extraordinary-blazer-blog

The TrueHoop Network's Portland blog, Beyond Bowie, had one tough job. Not only is Portland an intense online basketball market, but I'm a Blazer fan myself -- so TrueHoop readers skew Portlandish and have high expectations for any Blazer news source.

Meanwhile, Beyond Bowie was fighting with one arm tied behind its back. The two people who took on the task are both tremendous writers and basketball fans, but have, you know, real lives. Max Handelman is a movie producer. Erik Barmack not only has a full-time job but recently finished a novel. Neither one is local.

Hats off to both of them. Everything they've done has been tremendous. But it's clear at this point that the scheduling reality is that they don't have the time to do enough to satiate information-hungry Blazer fans as anchor-tenants in this shopping mall of hoops blogs.

So, we're putting out a call. We're looking for a strong Blazer blog to join the TrueHoop Network. Could be one that's already out there, one that exists in your imagination, or some combination. Could be one run by one person or a whole team.

Want to be the TrueHoop Network's Portland Blazer blogger?
Send whatever you think we need to see (links, writing samples, proposals, references, errata) to portlandtruehoop@gmail.com. We'll review and be in touch.

And many thanks to Erik, Max, Rick, Jeff and everyone who contributed to Beyond Bowie. They did great stuff, and I'm pleased they're ready and willing to contribute when they can to the TrueHoop Network's next Portland blog.

Uh, isn’t this exactly what Dave & Ben should take full advantage of? Maybe it’s just me but I’d so say.

Hurry before the “Talkin’ Ball” guys contact them. Please for the love of God. ;)

I wasn't thinking Ben and Dave...

Blazersedge is awesome as is, I would want anything to change. I just think there are plenty of other potential bloggers hanging around these parts.

Interesting

I sent a slightly snarky e-mail asking about this situation a day ago, on the 24th. I like to think that I have an effect on things. More interesting, the totality of the response I recieved was:

“Ask BlazersEdge why they’re not in the TrueHoop Network …”

Anyone know what this is about. Does it have something to do with ESPN v. Yahoo or something?

by jnewhouse on Nov 25, 2009 9:38 PM PST reply actions

Is it part of the agreement

to not associate with other blogs/networks. It just seems weird, and somewhat disappointing, that TrueHoop links to here, BE links to TrueHoop, but any sort of formal arrangement is frowned upon.
I guess what I really want to know is whether this is a decision among Dave and Ben or if this is an SBN wide policy?

by jnewhouse on Nov 25, 2009 9:52 PM PST up reply actions

I don't know about an official policy, but I would suppose it exists

None of the ESPN TrueHoop Network blogs is a part of SBN and vice versa. SBN associated itself with Yahoo (I think it’s also a minority investor, but could be wrong. Their main backer is a VC), as well as with AOL Fanhouse and USA Today recently according to the sidebar.

by Norsktroll on Nov 25, 2009 10:09 PM PST up reply actions

TrueHoop and SBN are ultimately competing blog networks -- think NBC vs. CBS vs. ABC vs. Fox

There are a couple others: Fanball, Bloguin, and MVN (which is currently in some sort of hiatus, I think).

Of course, Henry would no doubt LOVE to get Dave and Ben to jump from one network to another — although they might have to leave the name BE behind to do so and there may or may not be financial or contractual hurdles as well. They’re privy to that information, nobody else is…

But I have a hunch that Dave is happy enough where he is. The SBN software is very good, all things considered, and my sense is that the SBN family of basketball blogs is, on average, superior to the TrueHoop family of basketball blogs.

Henry’s default second option is probably to chase Bust a Bucket, which is part of the weak sister Bloguin network.

The alternative, it would seem, would be a new blog making use of a collective of Blazer fans from outside the existing loop.

It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Ironic

Bloggers are basically mainstream networks now.

Yes, it is really turning out that way.

There are a couple other little sports blog networks, “Fansided” being one, but it looks to me like things are shaking down to two big networks — SBN and TrueHoop — with Bloguin a developing newcomer.

Part of the reason deals with tech support, part of the reason deals with advertising sales.

SBN has great software (the ability of the live game threads to do what they do is kind of a marvel, if you think about it) and TrueHoop has the 1800 pound gorilla, ESPN, with all its money and traffic and draw and cachet behind it…

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
