Lets all not forget
we have played pretty crap teams so far
"shaq and zach randolph have the same trainer... "
best one liner i ever heard.
Yeah, but...
New Jersey played inspired ball, like they thought their coaches job was on the line or something. Plus you can see that Devin Harris is not his usual self and Courtney Lee is working his way back as well.
I though NJ played decent defense and played with passion.
It also shows how good Portland will be, they withstood the inspired effort and dominated in the 4th. Good win. Still some work to do, but they are looking very promising. If Cunningham keeps delivering this team will be scary good.

No, he didn't
Nine minutes in the first half with two fouls.
Five and a half minutes in the third quarter when he picked up his third, and he’s pulled.
The Nets made runs during both stretches.
Greg wasn’t in foul trouble during either of these stretches.
You can’t dispute that the team’s defensive efficiency is significantly higher when Oden is in the game.
If you stop the Nets from scoring 6 points in the second quarter and you’re up by 11 at half instead of 5 or up by 12 instead of 6 at the end of the third, it’s the same as stopping them from scoring the 6 in the fourth quarter.
Additionally, in May/June, do you want Oden out of the game with three fouls in the first half? With three in the third?
I don’t.
I want Oden to be beasting as often as physically possible. Sitting him rather than allowing to play his way through foul trouble is counterintuitive.
In fact, being so sensitive to perceived foul trouble fulfills the prophecy that Oden’ll be in foul trouble.

Except he continued to be an offensive threat requiring a double team
Nate’s goal is to keep him injury free and playing about 24 minutes per game. Tonight he played 24:57. Perhaps that is the most important goal – to keep him healthy.
Nate managed the game and has Greg in for the finish.

One area where I think Nate is smart
I read somewhere Nate gives Oden one foul per quarter. I think he’s locking down on the fouls so that the refs don’t get conditioned to him fouling out. If he manages Oden’s fouls, then after a while the refs will stop EXPECTING Oden to foul. I think that’s what happened last season, and I think Oden picked up a lot of fouls that – while they are fouls – don’t get called on most other players.
That's an interesting idea
And a smart one, if it’s reality

REC
Amen! I said all this to myself tonight. He should have played another 5 minutes in the third and at least 3 minutes in the second. He probably picks up one more foul in there but rather than allowing NJ to think they could win this one we could have stepped on their (proverbial) throat early and dashed all hope. Nate and GO have trust issues re:fouls and need a heart-2-heart before this costs us against a better team.

WhenLopez went to the bench in the early 2nd, Oden only had 1 foul
and that undersized guy with cornrows on him (sorry, don’t know his name). Oden quickly picked up his 2nd foul on offense trying to go through the guy. After that, Nate pulled him and we went small ball the rest of the half (and lost ground I believe). I think at the very least, Nate should have left him in at that point, and tried to use him down low on the undersized guy – just ‘cause he got 1 offensive didn’t mean it was a bad idea – at least until Lopez came back.
Opportunity lost there I think

Josh Boone = with cornrows
The minutes limit of 24 minutes per game now enables Greg to be fresh, injury free and still win the game.

I've yet to see a great argument against Nate as a coach
We improve every year, he’s never had a stable roster core (8 man rotation) and is developing players/integrating new guys/coming up with ways to get the most out of rotations. I think people that want Nate fired are often the same people who don’t understand why Matt Bonner gets minutes for the Spurs. There are many subtleties to this wonderful game.

I agree
On top of the league in offensive efficiency, defense fg% and points scored, rebounds, Portland, after losing its two top SF’s and integrating another who has missed the entire year last year, is a success story which speaks greatly to the coach. Right now there is no other coach I would rather have. Nate is developing his very young team while still contending for a post-season berth. And of the men who might be available there is certainly no coach out there who would get these guys to play at or above the current level.

There’s no stopping Lebron or Kobe either…

I agree - he was not missing tonight
The motivation to get off then snide for NJ put desperation into winning this game. Lopez is not better than Oden but he is a handful. Has Portland needed to give Greg 25 shots he would (using season averages and ratios) score 39.6 points per game.
"Either way we have two phenomenal units. I'm excited to play with either one." - Martell Webster
Because the "Oden/Przy" combo was out for a good 4-5 minutes in the second quarter in which Lopez went nuts.

A quick note to the refs
Other than the frustratingly obligatory “Call a quick foul on Oden then the opposing center at the start of each half,” they did a pretty capable job. They just blended into the background.

Give the Nets some credit, they came out and played hard, with a game plan
They were no pushover team tonight.
It would be odd if that team went down as the worst starter in NBA history
Most of their role players suck and they have shipped out their 4 former franchise guys (Martin, Kidd, Richardson, Carter), but they do have good young building blocks (Lopez, Harris, CDR, Lee) that are no scrubs for sure.

chalk up another sub 30 minute non foul out for Oden.
'Cuse 88-Cornell 73. My Big Red failed to beat the spread by 2 points. Hence the new avatar.
If he can't get these fouls under control the last 20 games of the season...I may begin to believe he'll simply run into foul trouble his whole career.
…I am optimistic though, it just doesn’t seem possible that anyone could continue to struggle with fouls the way he does
It's really getting quite frustrating.
Nate check’s Przybilla in at the 6 minute mark of the first quarter like clockwork, regardless of the foul situation or regardless of how well Oden is doing. Nate really has to get used to the idea that Oden is our PRIMARY CENTER now. They aren’t equals anymore, and its getting quite obvious.

Love Blake as a person, but it seems that his continued "steady & weakly reliable" presence is really gonna hinder this team from jumping up a grade
…and I don’t care if we jump up a grade or two with him here, to me, that just means we could have jumped up 2 or 3 grades by reducing his minutes and figuring out a way to get Miller and Bayless more burn
he needs to either be at or over 30 minutes every night, unless he actually fouls out.
'Cuse 88-Cornell 73. My Big Red failed to beat the spread by 2 points. Hence the new avatar.
Let's give Nate the benefit of the doubt
With Oden, and with the PG situation.
I’m with KP on this- you make your changes during the summer, and during the season you ride with what you have. Micro-managing and doing quick-changes aren’t going to give you cohesion. Let the guy you hired to make decisions make decisions, and revisit what you thought after the season is over.
by TheThinWhiteDuke on Nov 25, 2009 10:42 PM PST up reply actions
Nate's current rotation gets Greg a ceiling potential of 30 minutes per night
he plays the first 6 minutes of the 1st and 3rd quarter, and comes back in at about the 9 minute mark of the 2nd and 4th quarters. Even if he has no foul trouble whatsoever and plays out each half after coming back in, that’s just 30 minutes per half.
I’d like to see Nate play him the first 9 minutes of the 1st quarter unless he gets his 2nd foul. Then bring him back with about 7 or 8 minutes left in the 2nd quarter, and play him until he gets a 3rd foul or the half ends. He should play the same shift in the 3rd – the first 9 minutes or until he gets his 4th foul. either way, he comes back in the 4th with 7 or 8 minutes left and plays until the game is over, he fouls out, or the margin is out of hand.
How did you guys win that?
"We scored enough points. We scored 107, they scored 105.

Nate has really got to figure out a rotation.
There are too many moments in the game where his unit of players just doesn’t mix well.
Miller has got to play more minutes even if our superstar doesn’t like it.
Miller plays extremely well with Oden, LA, and Rudy.
I’m sick of seeing Blake subbed in for him just because Blake is Brandon’s court compliment.
Webster is shuffled in and out. Rudy barely plays in the first half. Oden once again plays under 30 minutes.
He played with 5 fouls for 2 minutes. He wasn't in foul trouble.

Yeah because the Coach kept taking him out. Im saying that instead of taking him
out, he could have left him in 30+ minutes and if he did get in foul trouble, just move him onto Boone, or bring constant double teams vs Lopez
It does not mean much, but I stopped voting for Roy in the all-start ballot, unless he invites Miller in the starting line-up
And Oden, once again, is a rookie, so non-stop fast break basketball is like fast-forwarding a song while he's trying to learn the lyrics.
And he is not playing like an all-start now anyways.
He will only get in by coaches vote.

It's sad that I enjoyed the game a helluva lot more when Miller-Rudy-Webster-Dante-Oden
were out on the floor. Those guys shared the ball and their was constant movement.
When Roy isn’t on his game, it’s basically he and Blake dribbling at the 3 point line until 3 seconds on the shot clock
This is true
I enjoyed watching the unit you described more, but Roy is the guy who gets the ISO calls, and that’s a valuable commodity in crunch time.
I’m torn, because I HATE Roy’s 1-on-4 plays, but he succeeds enough of the time to call it a good play.

What really bothers me is when Blake is in the game and Roy isn't being aggressive
The only reason to play Blake is to space the floor for Roy. When Blake is on the court Roy needs to take advantage of that and look to score on his own, or get Blake open 3 point shots

Thanks to coming back from injury, and Miller doing a credible job slowing him down. Usually you could always expect 20+ point explosions from him. while i agree i also disagree
if you guys all coached the team it would implode in about 30 seconds. Nate biggest problem is finding minutes for everyone so as to keep this teams chemistry focused on the larger goal. He is actually making sure Oden plays longer by taking him out and saving him for the second half and entire 4th. While I too wanna see Oden get more minutes, everyone on our team wants more minutes, and there is only 48 to go around. ODEN is my favorite player and I want him to be the greatest ever, but I also want this team to be a champiuonship team, GOs stats vs us winning isnt even an argument. Even Greg would tell you that. Nate is doing a fine job—while yall may disagree with me for sure, I am stoaked with our record right now and Nates coaching thus far.

He was nice!
Such a huge difference in guys with 4 years of college under their belts. He is so much more polished and mature looking on the court. He also seems to be very disciplined on D both on ball and helping out.

I hope that gets recorded by the Blazers or Comcast
League Pass is out already
Ceterum censeo Lakers esse delendam
you can access talking ball shows in the comcast on demand menu.
My team went to the playoffs in my first year.
My point being that anyone could record it at any time for the bedge.
My team went to the playoffs in my first year.
League Pass can only show the portion that the NBA owns
That’s why pregame, postgame, and halftime shows are not shown. They even cut out those one-minute recap segments.
And TNT shows are shown, but TNT operates NBA.com and is affiliated of course
Ceterum censeo Lakers esse delendam
I've seen a few cases where they show a team's postgame, but it's rare
Also, what gets cut out may depend on how raw a feed they can offer. Last year, League Pass folks saw the Blazers halftime show and the 60 second recaps. This year, poof. Portland seems to be supplying a more raw feed.
Watching the Nets broadcast on NBA LP HD, they left all the Nets broadcast stuff, and even the local commercials
Hadn’t seen those in forever. I’m guessing they don’t do inserts on the HD feed.
Unexciting but solid win
These guys are miles ahead of the Wolves.

Blake was -1 on the game tonight
I think this means its time to retool the team. Time to start building around our star Steve Blake. We need less selfish players who will let Blake take more shots. That should increase our chances of winning.

If we had a battle of the Steves
I would have to agree with you. As cavejunctionblazer points out, Maryland won a championship without even building around blake. If we were smart enough to build around him just think how deadly we would be.

ESPN Blazer highlights just aired.
Oden tip-in, Nets missing then Martell three, LMA block, Joel dunk, Miller to LMA Ooop, Rudy’s long three, then they said “Greg Oden time!” as they show Oden close out the Nets in the 4th.
Congrats, you just saw the Sportscenter segment on the Blazers.
speaking of thanksgiving,
whats the best dish of the night that a blazer player made to another? Was it LMA alley oop from miller?

i liked when greg got called on a foul for ...something
and he put his arms up questioning the crown and everyone jumped in with the boos. i wonder if you can get a technical for that. if not i like it. almost like a couple weeks ago with his defensive arms up “i didnt touch him” “wasnt me” move everytime someone drove on him.
Well it was a good game-- im out--peace yall
Happy Thanksging!!!

at the game tonight.....anybody else notice
after andre pulled back a fastbreak late in the game, roy threw his hands up in disgust….maybe im looking for it now, but it was uncool body language i thought. anybody else see this live or on tv?
luckily im a bronco and a blazer fan
in defense of Nate
I like most of what he’s doing Greg shouldn’t play more than 28 minutes a night, Pryz should play at least 20 he’s the best back up 5 in the league. Plus big men are injury prone when you have the luxury of 2 quality centers use them both and keep your bigs fresh for the playoffs and healthier throughout the season. Right now we are getting 15.5 points and 16 rebounds from the center position I’m ok with that. Andre Miller should come off the bench and Blake should start I like pulling Blake and Roy off the floor at about the 8 to 10 minute mark of the first quarter and replacing them with Miller and Rudy, I think this helps to insure we always have a play maker on the floor Blake coming off the bench would cause our offense to sputter when Miller and Roy were both on the bench. I would like to see Miller finish games and get about 30 minutes a game and Blake reduced to 18-20 minutes a game but I think that will happen. All in all we haven’t played our best ball but we are 12-5 with a young team that is still learning how best to play together and despite our injuries really good bench depth. I expect our youth and depth will really pay off at the end of season.
Cunningham looks great. He’s doing a few things which Travis doesn’t seem to bring every night.
1. Hustle
2. Defense
No he won’t give you a three point shot. But he’s got real decent range from 15-17 and plays like a 4 year college kid. Let’s put it this way. It’s my opinion that even at this point Dante Cunningham is probably a better fit as a backup PF than Travis Outlaw is. But even though Dante is a 3/4 tweener I’d prefer Travis backing up Webster when he comes back.
Starters would be Blake, Roy, Webster, Aldridge, Oden
Backups would be Miller, Fernandez, Outlaw, Cunningham, Pryzbilla
..now that is a huge, huge bench and 2 of those guys have a three point shot.
"The team and the city are intertwined, and if one side isn't holding up that bargain, it's even more painful than usual. Anyway, I couldn't be happier that I got a taste of it. Great NBA city."
-- Bill Simmons
even though Dante is a 3/4 tweener I’d prefer Travis backing up Webster when he comes back.
Uhh, there’s this guy named Nic Batum…he’s going to be “back” before Travis and Webster will be backing him up
I’ll be surprised to see Outlaw play a game this year. These fifth metatarsil injuries just don’t heal quickly and even after they do, the player won’t have his strength/stamina back right away. Then there’s things like “getting their timing back” and fitting ’em back into the rotation
Maybe Travis won’t have a setback like Webster did, but I’m not counting on him being a contributer for Portland any more this year
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
