Canzano Politicizes Roy For His Own Agenda

This is just about the angriest I've ever been at Canzano. His latest column is basically calling Brandon Roy a traitor for his private moment in the tunnel during the national anthem. This attitude is ridiculous, you would suppose that Canzano is the same kind of person that feels that you can't be spiritual unless you go to church, because it just doesn't "feel right" to do things your own way. If Brandon Roy says that he loves America, doesn't complain about America, why does Canzano make a point to go out of his way into shaming Brandon into participating in the national anthem?

This the kind of activist journalism that really bothers me. We have professional athletes that are misogynist, homophobic, and involved in all kinds of really detrimental activities... and Canzano goes after a trivial act that has no bearing on anyone else. I guess there isn't enough flag-waving going on in sports now.

Patriotism is not measured by how well you recite the Pledge of Allegiance, how teary-eyed you get when Whitney Houston sings the national anthem, or anything like that. What makes a patriot is something that cares about his country, does what he can to contribute positively, and fights injustice when he can. These other symbolic acts Canzano is confusing the United States being like some sort of team that we're all playing on. Being American does not require uniformity, in fact, American individualism is a blessing of our Constitutional society. Canzano should be embracing the ability of Roy and others to express their selves as they wish because we can do that in America, and the argument that "if all the other players went in the tunnel" is ridiculous, because they won't go into the tunnel. It is a strawman argument meant to create controversy where there isn't controversy.

Find a real issue to write about, and move on from your trivialities, Canzano.

*UPDATE*

Canzano previously wrote about Roy's actions during the anthem and had no problems with it. Hat tip to BEdger jrj.

I dunno, I kind of get his point

The National Anthem is a tradition, and Basketball is really the one true major sport rooted in America. Why shouldn’t he be out there with the team. Also, Canzano’s point that if it was Rudy or Nic, or the entire team, it would be questioned and made a much bigger deal out of.

Anyway, it’s a free country, but I don’t see what makes Roy so special that he shouldn’t share in that moment with the rest of the team/teams/fans….

Turning a blind eye to all the good that is and has been done is also a diservice, and unfair. The people and government of America do more to make the world a better place than most. Not that one good deed wipes away a mistake, but it sure as hell should count for something.

Or this one by George Brassens (transtaled from French by David-Barfield )

In the village, without pretention,
I have a bad reputation
Whether I make an effort or whether I keep quiet
I am regarded as a I don’t know what.

Yet I don’t do harm to anyone
Going on my own sweet way.
But the good folk don’t like that
You follow another way than them
No the good folk don’t like that
You follow another way than them
Every-one speaks ill of me
Except for the dumb, that goes without saying

On the day of the 14th of July
I keep to my cosy bed
The marching music
That doesn’t concern me
Yet I don’t do harm to anyone
By not listening to the bugle that sounds
But the good folk don’t like that
You follow another way than them
No the good folk don’t like that
You follow another way than them
Everyone points at me
Except for those without arms, that goes without saying

When I run into an unlucky thief
Chased by cultural chap
I stick out my foot and why keep it quiet,
The cultural chap finds himself on the ground
Yet I don’t do harm to anyone
By letting apple thieves have a run.
But the good folk don’t like that
You follow another way than them
Everybody pounces on me
Except for those without legs, that goes without saying

No need to be a Jeremiah
To guess the fate that awaits me
If they find a rope to their liking,
They will put it around my neck
Yet I don’t do harm to anyone
By following the paths that don’t lead to Rome
But the good folk don’t like that
You follow another way than them
No the good folk don’t like that
You follow another way than them
Everybody will come to see me hanged
Except for the blind, of course.

I think "moving permanently from the USA" takes a bit more work than looking into it.

I’ve lived abroad (Japan, non-military), my wife was born abroad and lived abroad until she was 13 years old (all over Europe, again, non-military.) It isn’t so much the USA failing to spread goodwill as it is OTHER countries being more xenophobic than ours.

by FrederickT1 on Nov 25, 2009 6:28 PM PST up reply actions

I love that argument.

You should appreciate your freedom of speech and all of our other liberties. But don’t use them to criticize your government when you’re not happy about something. This rule applies unless you’re a conservative upset about Barack Obama being president. Then it’s patriotic to talk secession.

Part of the problem with this kind of patriotism is that people can’t fathom that another country could actually do things as well or better then Amurrica. Our country actually gives proportionally less money in aid, both foreign and domestic, than most other industrialized nations. Too much money is spent on defense and servicing the debt.

Yes, we’re lucky to live in this country, but the poo stinks just as bad here than anywhere else. Trying to shut people up for pointing that out is something dictatorships do.

Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
‘Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more!
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps’ pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war’s desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav’n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust.”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Thats ridiculous.

The principles behind this song had nothing to do with the war. The war was the only instrument available to accomplish a goal which was noble, unless you think living under a monarchy as a serf is a great idea.

Simply because a song mentions the fact that a war was going on doesn’t mean the war mentioned was the point of the song, it just happened to be the circumstances and the battle was the back drop. The insipriation was what they were fighting for.

Your opinion may be that war is absolutely evil at all times no matter the cause, but that doesn’t make your opinion relevant to what the song is/was about.

by Seijeff on Nov 25, 2009 12:12 AM PST up reply actions

There's a lot I love about this country, my only beef

is that we tend to mainly gear our public displays of patriotism to military symbols and the glorification of war. I’m willing to grant the point that the desire expressed in the song is for an end to the war, but it still glorifies it, and the conquest required to end it. Maybe those were good things, I’m willing to grant that they were.

But I like to get a helping of patriotism served up with peace once in a while, with appreciation for the land and the people, and even then not have it shoveled at me day in and day out.

by raoulduke on Nov 25, 2009 12:17 AM PST up reply actions   2 recs

I don't see it as glorifying the war at all.

The main references to the war in respect to the nation’s endurance through it, not the wonders or benefits of the war itself.

Singing about the nation’s perserverance isn’t glorifying what they persevered through.

“The principles behind this song had nothing to do with the war. The war was the only instrument available to accomplish a goal which was noble, unless you think living under a monarchy as a serf is a great idea.”

the star spangled banner i’m pretty sure was a poem written by someone witnessing a battle during the War of 1812. While that has been called the “2nd War of independence” , the United States had not been rolled by a monarchy for over 30 years.

Seijeff, the song isn't about the Revolutionary War

It is about the war of 1812. The war when the US attacked Canada when the British were busy fighting Napoleon. The Brits still made time to come kick our a**e* in their spare time, burn down our capitol, etc.

So, my country (tis of thee) has an anthem about a battle fought in a war we lost to the British when we tried to attack Canada.

Canada 1 – America 0 [Scoreboard, baby!]

Seriously, is listening to this odd song your litmus test for patriotism? (Now, I could see it if you are a Rockets fan … )

I think it’s a lot more patriotic to protest the war in Iraq than it is to praise the US for losing a needless war trying to grab more of North America while the British weren’t looking. I hope you can agree that this particular effort on the part of this young country, on a lot of different levels, was nothing we should model today.

And kudos to Brandon Roy for knowing his history and bringing this point home to us.

You sir, are incorrect . . .

as most historians would say, a win by the US. See the Battle of New Orleans- Victory commanded by Andrew Jackson just after the
Treaty of Ghent. One of the main reasons for the war of 1812 was impressment of American merchant seamen by the British Navy. As Great
Britan and most of the European powers were
at war with Napolean, the British ruled the waters and needed more sailors. In addition, there were disputes over the 3-mile violations
and the paper blockade.
The War of 1812 didn’t start well (burning
of DC and lack of sea power), but as the British
didn’t have a lot of extra land forces, the American
army/militias won most of the skirmishes.

The Battle of New Orleans by Johnny Horton

In 1814 we took a little trip
Along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip
We took a little bacon and we took a little beans
And we caught the bloody British in a town in New Orleans

We fired our guns and the British kept a-comin’
There wasn’t nigh as many as there was a while ago
We fired once more and they begin to runnin’
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico
(One-two-three, with a-one-two-three)

We looked down a river
And we see’d the British come
And there must have been a hundred of’em
Beatin’ on the drums
They stepped so high
And they made their bugles ring
We stood by our cotton bales
And didn’t say a thing

We fired our guns and the British kept a-comin’
There wasn’t nigh as many as there was a while ago
We fired once more and they begin to runnin’
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico

Old Hickory said we could take ‘em by surprise
If we didn’t fire our muskets
‘Till we looked ’em in the eye
We held our fire
’Till we see’d their faces well
Then we opened up our squirrel guns
And really gave ’em . . . well, we

Fired our guns and the British kept a-comin’
There wasn’t nigh as many as there was a while ago
We fired once more and they begin to runnin’
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico

Yeah, they ran through the briars
And they ran through the brambles
And they ran through the bushes
Where a rabbit couldn’t go
They ran so fast
That the hounds couldn’t catch ’em
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico

We fired our cannon ’til the barrel melted down
So we grabbed an alligator and we fought another round
We filled his head with cannon balls, and powdered his behind
And when we touched the powder off the gator lost his mind

We fired our guns and the British kept a-comin’
There wasn’t nigh as many as there was a while ago
We fired once more and they begin to runnin’
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico

Yeah, they ran through the briars
And they ran through the brambles
And they ran through the bushes
Where a rabbit couldn’t go
They ran so fast
That the hounds couldn’t catch ’em
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.

Militarism is a broad and vast concept

that you’ve incredibly simplified to fit into your concept. This song is about a battle, that does not make it about militarism, which may or may not be on display during a battle. More likely than not, militarism is not on display during a battle. Furthermore, the side espoused as better in this song fights against the only entity that could possibly be considered militaristic.

Seriously, I understand you don’t like war. Many militarists wouldn’t either. But, it’s certainly worth noting that most instances of battle are not indicative or even results of militarism (modern battles trending heavily in favor of militarist conflict).

I don't hate america

And I dont think I’ve ever done anything because it’s “hip.”

But I would never say the national anthem, or pay any respect to it, because it is a ritual of allegiance, and, as a Christian, I don’t personally feel I should be required to renounce my faith by participating in a ritual of faith in the government. Especially a government that stands directly opposed to the Kingdom I believe in (as all governments are, nothing special about america).

I don’t have a problem with someone else who does respect it—that’s fine, and your choice. But it is my (and anyone else’s) VALID choice not to.

I completely agree

Pointless article with condescending and annoyingly judgmental tone. Who the hell cares what Roy does during the national anthem. He’s not trying to make a scene or make a public statement. Just let him be. This would be a dumb criticism if Roy was a politician. But he’s a basketball player. So it’s dumb on stilts.

It's yellow journalism.

And actually reminds me quite a bit of the fake outrage stirred up the during the presidential campaign over the picture that showed Obama not putting his hand over his heart during the anthem — i.e., he doesn’t observe the moment exactly the “right” way, so let’s pillory him.

At the very least, Canzano should’ve had the guts to go to Brandon and ask him about it: Why he does it, what message does he think it sends to the team and the fans, and whether his responsibilities as the franchise player extend to taking part in this ritual. Instead he wrote an opportunistic, attention-hounding hit piece. And it worked, I guess, because we’re talking about it.

Hit it. Yes he did. Ohhhh yeah.

Grasping at straws.

Roy’s actions are not a sign of disrespect, but Canzano makes them out to be, to the point of comparing him to other players who WERE trying to make a statement with their actions even when Brandon has said this is not what he’s doing. This is a non-story. Could somebody please start firejohncanzano.com please.

If for whatever reason he wasn’t where he was supose to be, right now I will be content thinking that roy is just late to getting to a good place to show respect for our flag, and until brandon flat out says that he’s more comfortable with the flag not in the building when he’s playing then I guess I’ll just asume that he is late?

This is my final straw with Canzano

Unreal. Look John, I know that despite the fact you’re the “sportswriter of the year” the overpriced O continues to tank. And I have been critical of Brandon for other reasons (e.g. the Miller/Blake situation). But this is just dreck, pure and simple. Brandon Roy is not disrespecting the anthem by taking a moment to pray (I love the irony that Roy gets called out for disrespecting the USA by exercising his right to freely practice his religion – you can pick one bedrock principle of this nation to enjoy, and that’s all, right John?). I’m not buying the O until John is gone, I’m just plain tired of this schlock that passes for journalism. Guess the best I can do is vote with my wallet. What a clown…

To elaborate

Pardon my language, but who in the hell is John Canzano to speak on this. I’m a fairly religious person, and I know a lot of folks here and elsewhere who are not. That’s an individual choice/right. My relationship with God/spirituality is very important to me. For John Canzano to speak on the “audacity” of Brandon Roy in what is an intensely private moment where he could be speaking with God (whichever form of God he believes in) or reflecting on those close to him who may be gone is just so gallingly egotistic I’m literally blown away. I wouldn’t blame B Roy for getting very much in his face for that. Rant over…

Just like every other subject, I suppose.

Everyone has his own idea and opinion; Interprets “Patriotism” in his or her own individual way.

Which is exactly why it is so important that we have a society in which people are free to express themselves as they see fit.

Which includes Brandon Roy, you and I, and even knuckleheads like John Canzano.

by Badalona Baddie on Nov 24, 2009 9:37 PM PST up reply actions

A refresher from Wiki:

Abdul-Rauf is perhaps best known for the controversy created when he refused to stand for “The Star-Spangled Banner” before games2, stating that the flag was a “symbol of oppression” and that the United States had a long “history of tyranny”. He said that standing to the national anthem would therefore conflict with his Islamic beliefs. On March 12, 1996, the NBA suspended Abdul-Rauf for his refusal to stand, but the suspension lasted only one game. Two days later, the league was able to work out a compromise with him, whereby he would stand during the playing of the national anthem but could close his eyes and look downward. He usually silently recited a Muslim prayer during this time.

In an apparent publicity stunt gone wrong linked to this controversy, four employees of Denver’s KBPI were charged with misdemeanor offenses related to entering a Colorado mosque and playing “The Star-Spangled Banner” on a bugle and trumpet, in a provocative response to Abdul-Rauf’s refusal to stand for the national anthem.

To stand and listen to a 2 minute long song? If you don’t want to do it because you don’t support the government or whatever, what about doing it to honor the people that died to protect the freedoms that so many people readily exercise?

Again, I think people can approach the national anthem however they want, that is America. It is just a little disappointing to hear how little some people seem to respect it. All that said, Canzano went about this in the absolute wrong way, he came across as the ultimate muck raker…..

You don’t have to support the war in Iraq to support the troops that are over there…

Is this so? If i support the troops over there, will I not be in support of the war?

This enigma is why it is so important that war be fought only when it is morally just. And the lesson of history and of the last century is that ONLY IN SELF DEFENSE IS WAR JUST.

This is why the whole world scratched its head when we invaded Iraq: we just threw out all the lessons of history.

If only it were as simple as you seem to suggest…

Should we have waited for them to drop a Nuc on us then?

Nevermind, I don’t even want to go there, I have no interest in arguing whether the Iraq invasion was just or not. In all reality, you are probably right that it was a head scratching move, especially when no WMD’s turned up. There are soldiers in Iraq that don’t believe in the war, but they accept that their job is not to make decisions for the president, it is to carry out orders. They are taught to trust their efforts will never be in vain, but even if they are, is that their fault? You act like they had a vote asking all of the military whether they should go to war or something. They don’t get to choose what battles they fight. Their job is to be ready to serve their country and government, and if that requires them going to Iraq, right or wrong, they do it. Our nations military, the one responsible for protecting us and our rights as citizens, is built on this. I have a hard time blaming tens of thousands of troops for one moronic president’s decisions, and I find their willingness to risk their lives for a cause worthy of our admiration. We can agree to disagree though, it wouldn’t be the first time and definitely wont be the last…

It’s maybe a little rude to keep quoting you all the time:

…I find their willingness to risk their lives for a cause worthy of our admiration.

It is admirable. Totally. That’s human nature. But history has taught us that the cause matters. At least when it comes to war.

So I ask you. If I risk my life in a pointless effort, is that admirable?

Its a red herring debate

supporters of the war have made it extremely difficult to express support for the troops and not for the war.

I despise the war, and its motives. However I wish the same for the troops as I do for all Americans overseas, to be safe.
But of course if I buy a yellow ribbon that says support our troops, it does not in fact signify I support the troops, it signifies that I support the war

The best way to respect the democratic principles of our founding fathers means not having the compulsory recital of an anthem. Our democratic republic was created to secure and perpetuate liberty for the individual. A just government does not need a national anthem anymore than it would need an official religion.

It’s the Constitution and Bill of Rights that protect us, not blind devotion to a flag or a song.

If Canzano simply wanted to knock Brandon down a peg, why didn’t he go after him for the comments he made about the end of the 3-guard experiment after Saturday’s game? Read this article. It will illuminate you on the sleazy game that the self-promoter Canzano plays...
First, though, you must know about Roy and the tunnel.

Because there are few private moments in Roy’s life anymore. He is a father of two young children. He is the best player on one of the league’s best young teams. And while he says he plays because he loves basketball, there are people pulling at him constantly — for autographs, for quotes, for appearances — which is why he secretly enjoyed when Greg Oden arrived a year ago, pulling some of the media temporarily to the other side of the locker room. * * *

So yeah. Roy retreats to the tunnel before games. He bows his head. He listens to the anthem. And Roy said: “I say a little prayer and have a little time to myself.” And maybe that doesn’t strike you as a team leader thinking team, and being part of a team, but his teammates don’t mind.

He’s always there for his team when the lights go up, isn’t he?

that was exactly the same line that jumped out at me. Picture it being said in an ominous voice-over with a picture of Brandon taken from a bad angle and looking like a sketchball. It sounds like something straight out of a political assassination ad or Behind The Music. Canzano is such an oozing pimple on the flesh of humanity.

Why now though?

There’s plenty of real Blazer news (not to mention the biggest football game in the history of the state) and the most interesting thing Canzano has to offer is this? A story that has probably been written for a year and a half, but only now did he think that Roy was weak enough to attack. It often happens that after the big contract signing people become targets. He wonders if Roy is making a statement on individualism… as if that’s a bad thing?

Um, hello Johnny, ever read a book about the founders and their political philosophy?
Didn’t think so. Too busy reading books on baseball and shining your head to really understand the principles the country was founded on I guess. But apparently not too busy to comment on them blindly. What a total moron!

I can’t believe the line where he actually says, “But there’s no government agency charged with policing the anthem, so on game night we’re on the honor system.” What? As if our lives aren’t regulated enough, now athletes are somehow disrespecting the nation if they don’t stand in a certain place during the anthem?

Who’s to say what Roy is thinking during this time. There is equal chance that he’s contemplating on the words of the song, thanking God for his freedom and doing it in a way that is more meaningful to him because he’s not in the spotlight as there is that he’s not wanting to participate because of some disagreement politically.

Canzano is an idiot, but then everyone here knows that.

Of course, I dislike “The Star-Spangled Banner” being played at sporting events.

At the same time, though, John Canzano has got every right to publish this column.

If Brandon loses sponsors or is blackballed around town or whatnot, then it would be libel. I dont think it would happen, but if it limits his income and is completely false, Brandon would have a case

Of course he has the "right" to publish it

We got the right to complain about it and give reasons why he’s a damn fool.

There are always possible repercussions to saying and writing foolish things, and this is one instance where Canzano deserves the crap he is going to get— and it won’t be anywhere close to the stupid crap Roy will get from people who think there is only one way to honor the national anthem.

I am pretty traditional with patriotism. I am a USA homer. I see our faults and want to change what I believe are our faults. When I was at the pre-season Clipper game and people started chanting DUNLEAVY SUCKS during the national anthem, I was offended. I enjoy honoring our country.

But individualism is one thing that makes this place great, along with free speech… and telling someone they are a damn fool when they act a fool is one of the benefits of living in the West.

Canzano deserves whatever he won’t really get.

I know Canzano loves his “human interest” pieces, but this is crazy. Nationalisms and Religions are two great human products.

Both keep humans working in a team, trying to improve things collectively. Both should be recognize and praised. They´re so big and so good that our leaders will easily make us parade in their names. Freedom is great also. Nobody marchs crying “electricity and education or death” though.

Then here come different teams, and we know historically how things develope from time to time: Instead of playing in the Olympics, we start a war in the name of our God or of our Nation. And millions and more millions of people get killed by their brothers. That´s how Europe has been made, having quite a few wars every century. And it´s not only Europe, of course.

But it´s not only against the other countries that we fight. There´re many little teams in our own big team. Those little teams have their own leaders and the fight also to take control of the big team. We know how things develope from time to time: we start a Civil War (every country has had one of those) or a religion War (Christians have fight against Christians, Muslims against Muslims, etc).

So, again, many of the best things we have come from Nationalism and Religions, but both should be kept accountable or, if you prefer to say it so, we should keep an eye on things made in their names, like, for example, when someone points at another human being because he doesn´t parade.

Very interesting discussion.

I do think it’s a little bit strange that the people who argue for Roy’s right to skip the national anthem are so down on Cazano writing the article.

Isn’t it just a tinny bit disingenuous to laud Roy’s right to free speech and then in the same breath criticize Canzano for exercising his right to free speech. You can’t say that everyone needs to respect Roy’s right to expression, even if you don’t agree with him, and then turn around and rail on Canzano because you don’t agree with the way he’s expressing himself.

by Nick Van Excellent on Nov 25, 2009 2:59 AM PST reply actions

I don't think it's disingenuous at all

Nobody’s criticizing Canzano for exercising his right to free speech. Everybody’s criticizing him for utilizing his right to free speech in a way that makes him sound like an utter jackass. He has every right to make himself sound like a jackass, but that doesn’t mean he’ll escape criticism for it.

"One of the bright spots of the young season has been rookie point guard Jonny Flynn, whose name sounds like he should be the lead character in a Broadway Musical. "Why I'm here to court trouble, and woo a girl, and build the most fantastical contraption the world has ever seen!" -- Dave, Game 7 Blazers versus Timberwolves preview

by BlazersOrBust on Nov 25, 2009 5:09 AM PST up reply actions   1 recs

I can see that.

I agree that the article was silly, but so is skipping the national anthem.

Canzano wasn’t criticizing Roy for exercising his right to free speech. He was criticizing him for utilizing his right to free speech in a way that makes him look like an utter jackass a tiny bit immature. Roy has every right to make himself look like a jackass a tiny bit immature, but that doesn’t mean he’ll escape criticism for it.

Now, I personally don’t care what Roy does. I think skipping the national anthem is pretty lame, but it’s his right to skip it, so I respect that. I’m just not sure how Canzano saying that Roy leaving his teammates during the national anthem shows a lack of leadership, is any worse than Roy actually skipping the national anthem. I don’t agree with either of them, but I don’t understand all the hate being thrown Canzano’s way for writing an OPINION about something Roy did.

People are criticizing Canzano for trying to make a bigger deal out of the whole thing at the same time that THEY try to make a bigger deal out of the whole thing. I just re-read the article and while I don’t agree with most of it, I didn’t think it was all that bad. He made some good points, some bad points, and pretty much pussyfooted around the whole subject.

by Nick Van Excellent on Nov 25, 2009 6:33 AM PST up reply actions

I do see what you're saying

and I think if it were a columnist who had tabula rasa instead of one who has literally built his career on half-baked insinuations and fanning the flames at the slightest hint of controversy, people might have reacted different, myself included.

But I’m so tired of Canzano’s schtick that I have little patience for his criticism of Roy in this instance, particularly because I don’t see it as a legitimate criticism — and I also feel that JC overstepped his bounds.

It’s one thing to say that Roy isn’t showing good leadership by leaving his teammates during the national anthem. That’s a non sequitor in my opinion, but fine. But I strongly objected to “He says he loves his country…” the implication being that he doesn’t. It’s wholly irrelevant for a sports columnist to be calling into question a player’s patriotism to begin with, and using this flimsy ‘evidence’ as the basis only worsens the offense.

It’s irresponsible, hack journalism. Just another JC special.

"One of the bright spots of the young season has been rookie point guard Jonny Flynn, whose name sounds like he should be the lead character in a Broadway Musical. "What are you doing here, Jonny Flynn?" Yeah.

I don’t like Canzano and I don’t consider him a journalist. The worst thing he says in the whole article is, “He said he loves America” which implies that Roy might NOT love America. It’s a little vague, but I think everyone knows what Canzano was trying to do there. He’s a big drama queen.

I’m just a little surprised at the level of outrage. Calling for his Job? Really? Maybe we should get a bunch of his articles and burn them. Canzano shouldn’t have written the article, but again, I’m not sure it’s worse than Roy leaving his team during the anthem.

I wouldn't say "wrong".

Maybe “imprudent” would be a better word.

Anyone else and I wouldn’t care (I barely care as it is). Webster could be doing it and I wouldn’t think twice, but Roy is the leader of the team, and leaving his team during the national anthem might not be the smartest thing he’s ever done.

If he’s NOT doing it for a political or ideological motive then he shouldn’t be doing it at all. I can understand Abdul-Rauf doing it, but if Roy doesn’t have a moral objection, then he should be out there with his teammates.

It would be like him skipping shoot around with the team or having a separate locker area or something. Maybe not to that degree, but I think it does show a lack of judgement.

by Nick Van Excellent on Nov 25, 2009 3:17 PM PST up reply actions

how do you know that?

If I was on a team with someone and they respectfully told me that they preferred to sit out the anthem, I wouldn’t necessarily mind that. How do you know the mind of his teammates on this?

It’s the troops that worry me the most. Say they are watching the Christmas game and they don’t see Roy out there for the anthem. It has the potential to break their spirit and it would adversely affect the outcome of the wars.

Why do you assume that Brandon Roy is even his real name?

I mean ROY = Rookie of the Year. Clearly this is a carefully chosen pseudonym for a guy whose real name is probably Hasheesh al-Jabra al-Jabooti or something.

He’s probably not even born in America!!!

WHY WON’T HE SHOW US HIS BIRTH CERTIFICATE?!?!?!?!?

I don’t know if he is or isn’t, but Canzano has used the phrase “whoever he prays to” repeatedly. It could be innocuous, but considering the rest of Canzano’s choices/actions in his setup of this story it truly seems to me that he is using code language to insinuate that Roy is Muslim.

Jehovah’s Witnesses believe their highest allegiance belongs to God’s Kingdom, which is viewed as an actual government in heaven, hence they remain politically neutral. They do not salute or pledge allegiance to flags or sing national anthems or patriotic songs. Witness publications taught that saluting the flag and standing for the national anthem are forms of idolatry.

Even though they do not salute the flag of any nation, this certainly is not meant to indicate disrespect. They show this respect by obedience to the country’s laws.

I’d have a tough time slamming the door shut on B.Roy.

I don’t really care if people aren’t into the National Anthem. It’s sort of like how people expect you to buy presents on Christmas. I appreciate my country and the people who have died for it my own way, during my own private moments. I think the National Anthem before every game cheapens patriotism quite frankly.

It’s well known that he will write whatever necessary in order to get people to talk about and view his column without much regard for journalistic integrity. The catch-22 here is that after 350+ almost universally negative comments he’s still won the arguement merely by creating the arguement in the first place.

I have to say that the idiot that wrote this is just trying to pull at the heart strings of vets. If Brandon Roy wants to stand in the tunnel durring the national anthem don’t you think he should? Isn’t it his right to do that? I personally hate to show emotion in public. It could be that I was raised old school; or that I think that a man should be a man. The fact is that this is just a pathetic attempt to villainize someone for not conforming to general practice. For those that are going to contend that there is no malice. It is also your right to do so. My point is that it was a story that, simply, should never have been.

Actually, the point is staring you in the face and you still can't see it

John Canzano and Jason Quick CREATED the jail blazers. The players were unsympathetic to start with, but Canzano did the EXACT SAME THING to them as he is doing to Roy now. Canzano unfairly and ridiculously demonized Portland players for his own purpose. The only difference is Wallace et al were already unsympathetic at the time, so readers ate up Canzano’s horse-hooey narratives hook line and sinker. Now, we actually love Roy and the Blazers. But Canzano can’t change his stripes, so he is still doing his self-righteous judgmental holier-than-thou hate-fest. Now we can see it for what it is. Come to think of it, the aspersions cast by Canzano about Brandon's patriotism are par for the course among Oregonian employees...

Jason Quick has the power to intuit Brandon’s mental state and his precise critique of the “Three Guard Lineup” based on on court body language, after all… So Canzano’s being able to decipher Brandon’s views on patriotism and nationalism through his pre-game routine is clearly normal and natural for the omniscient sports columnists at Oregon’s largest newspaper…

Canzano is such a whore for his advertisers it’s not even funny.

The only way he can keep his show relevant is by stirring a very limited pot of sports stories in this area. Listen to his interviews with players. He’s always looking for a negative sensational story. Or prodding players into saying something they don’t want public.

His coverage of the Civil War has been really sad in particular. He’s been gunning for a Blount interview over the last several days. Apparently UofO don’t want him to say something a young player with issues might say on the air. Can’t blame them for that. But Canzano is making it sound like Blount has some super secret bit of information that the University is hiding. I mean come on. He’s just a young kid who isn’t particularly well spoken. Why would the school want him to be distracted by a frenzy of media questions during the season? Hi John. How about you wait until the season is over. Oh wait! Then it won’t be nearly as big of a story will it? Oh I get it now. You want more listeners to go with those shady advertisers you allow on 95.5. You know like “tiptopcash.com” and “thevegasnightmare.com”. Boy those sure are reputable sponsors! Ugh. I don’t listen to his show anymore. It’s a train wreck of money grubbing for advertising dollars.

This is a great opportunity...

for some smart team to step up and do away with the obligatory National Anthem.

For a few, I suppose, it’s value added to their sports experience, but for just as many it’s a negative, and I suspect the majority don’t give a rip and just patiently wait it out. Like having to constantly wait in line as school children, I’d guess that there’s a handful who find the routine comforting, but the majority wouldn’t miss it if it disappeared like the dodo bird.

The Blazers, like all teams in the league, put a lot of effort into creating anticipation that builds from introductions to tip-off. It’s just bad business to follow some routine when that dated routine distracts from the product.

by lostcauses on Nov 25, 2009 12:43 PM PST reply actions

I'd be ok with this. The Philadephia Flyers used to occasionally sing America The Beautiful

instead of the anthem. Maybe we could have an anthem without the obligatory uniforms once in a while, no national guard, firefighters or boy scouts. Maybe an anthem that didn’t hark back military or quasi military service. When was the last time you saw the flag escorted to the court by school teachers or nurses?

What, seriously, would be wrong with showing respect to the foreign players by playing their anthem once in a while?

What about a meaningful appreciation of country and its diversity instead of an empty military themed ritual night after night?

by raoulduke on Nov 25, 2009 12:54 PM PST up reply actions

I think it's a privilege to be able to stand for the National Anthem

What Roy does isn’t an issue for me, but some of the comments above trouble me. My grandpa, who served during World War 2, was intensely patriotic, and it’s something that I take very seriously. We have a lot of blessings in this country including the ability to enjoy sporting events.

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving. That’s a lot of what the anthem means to me—it’s an acknowledgement of our blessings and being thankful for what we have. I guess a lot of people don’t get that.

Assuming you are serious and not posting this just because you have nothing

better to say, What I am saying is that assuming that people who call for a change in the way love of country is expressed at sporting events “don’t get” what the anthem or Thanksgiving" means is disrespectful.

If you can show where anyone is advocating deriding or spitting on things you should ask them that question, because I surely haven’t advocated that.

I think that you should be able to stand and put your hand over your heart anytime the spirit moves you.

Well, maybe not in the Starbucks line. But anyplace else is cool.

by raoulduke on Nov 25, 2009 1:20 PM PST up reply actions

Thanks

I appreciate the response. I was being serious.

Firstly, I’m not speaking of Thanksgiving at all, just the anthem. I was comparing my view of the anthem in a way to Thanksgiving, both because it’s tomorrow and because it is relevant to how I feel about the national anthem.

Secondly, what I’m saying is that people don’t seem to get how people like me view the anthem. There’s more of us than you think—if it weren’t so, the anthem would have been done away with years ago. In fact, that’s how I presented it in my original comment:

That’s a lot of what the anthem means to me—it’s an acknowledgement of our blessings and being thankful for what we have. I guess a lot of people don’t get that.

That’s why I was so surprised that you would call me disrespectful for detailing how I (and many others like me) feel about the anthem. But what’s happening is that people think the anthem is some old tradition, some pro-war pro-Bush pro-right wing nut song. I don’t think it has anything to do with the current, former, recent presidents or their views or policies, and I find it offensive that people label it as such.

by jamon51 on Nov 25, 2009 1:29 PM PST up reply actions

I get that. I think many people, myself being one of them

feel that the ritual coerces people into a show of support that they may not currently feel. My father was a WW2 vet. I get how he feels about the flag. I came of age in the Vietnam era. My feelings are different. Too often the flag has been used as a figleaf for crimes committed in our names. That too is part of the heritage of the flag.

Love of country is often a very complicated thing.

by raoulduke on Nov 25, 2009 1:34 PM PST up reply actions   2 recs

Fair enough

In this way we would simply be on opposite sides of a vote to keep the anthem or get rid of it, understanding the other’s position and why they feel that way, and not deriding each other for perceived motives that don’t exist. That’s how it should be.

by jamon51 on Nov 25, 2009 1:41 PM PST up reply actions

Well, yes. I think people ought to show repsect the way they feel best.

Even the anthem thing. This is not a huge deal for me. I always stand because I’m there to enjoy a basketball game not get into a fist fight with a drunk over a perceived slight.

My grip is rather specific. Along with showing respect to the vets who sacrificed, lets have a show of patriotism once in a while that doesn’t explicitely link love of country to love of its military prowess.

by raoulduke on Nov 25, 2009 1:44 PM PST up reply actions

I don't see the flag or the anthem that way

…after all, both have been around much longer than the issues you’re probably referring to. If someone used them as a “figleaf” like you said then I think that’s their problem, not the flag or the anthem’s, which were not intended that way nor do I think they should represent that.

But sadly I have to go get some work done. Good discussion raoulduke.

I worked circles around employees who made twice as much as me simply because they had been there WAY longer. Unions certainly had their place...

Back in the dark ages of the early industrial age when corporations routinely ran sweat shops, pushed kids into coal mines, and most Americans worked 10-14 hour days, the balance of power was certainly out of whack and tilted far to the owner’s side.

But in these days where seemingly every human on the planet can take a picture and post it on a public forum within minutes, Soviet style corporate control is a thing of the past, and the playing field is much more level.

To me, this means that the usefulness to society of unions has greatly lessened. In many cases (see Detroit) I think the balance of power has shifted so far to the worker’s side that it’s to the detriment of the country.

Now, there are still areas where unions are needed, strangely enough sports are one of them. Sports leagues are unique, in that the league as a whole need balanced competition to survive. They are closer to oligarchies than capitalistic entities.

I'm not saying...

that the worker is all powerful, and I realize that most people who work for corporations (I’m fortunate to not have to these days) have little control over the work they are asked to do, no control over their wages, and many are stuck in dead-end, boring jobs, and I sympathize..

But my point was I don’t think too many are working in sweat shop conditions these days…
From a macro economic point of view, I don’t think most unions are as good for their members as they are bad for the economy…

How odd that people who have actually been in Unions

think more highly of them than folks who haven’t.

Frankly most of the criticsm of unions seems to come from either the owners, which is understandable, or people who seem to feel that union members are undeserving of benefits like health insurance and good retirement that they themselves don’t get.

by raoulduke on Nov 27, 2009 4:23 PM PST up reply actions

another of the curious things about this country

is that a large portion of the population mimics the same philosophy of the owning class, even though it does not benefit at all.

Thus you see anti-union rhetoric from people who are wage slaves.

Is it because everyone believes that they are the ones who are going to be Gatsbys, and don’t want any “socialist” scent on them for fear of disqualification from the top?

A classic example is health care. We’re getting raped by Insurance companies and MDs. In spite of the tremendous burdens it is placing on both families and businesses, we have mediocre care at best. And yet the same Americans who are victim to this system will defend it tooth and nail!

What it comes down to is we’re still reeling from the dose of double-speak and anti-government nonsense that was Ronald Reagan.

This is the Reagan Era playing out. Throw in the delusional narcissism of the baby boomers, and you have the American political and social zeitgeist.

So crazy!

By thinking that you have this special understanding is straight ridiculous. To repeat my point ALMOST EVERYONE HAS FRIENDS OR FAMILY THAT SERVES OR HAS SERVED IN THE MILITARY. Just because you do too, does not mean your view point is special. I mean seriously.

Yes it absolutely does.

By saying that your grandpa served in WW2, and so you have special knowledge and “other people don’t get that” ignores the fact that almost (once again because there could be people I don’t know about) everyone has someone they love that is either in the military or has been in the military.

They have just as much (and if you’re grandfather is the only person you know whose been in the military then you know wayyyyyy less people than most) reason to celebrate the people in the military, and know just as much how to celebrate these people and their commitment.

Begging your pardon, but the collective sports experience has nothing to do in any way at any level with freedom or "blessings"....
We have a lot of blessings in this country including the ability to enjoy sporting events.

Witness the Nazi use of the 1936 Olympics or the way sport was used to divert popular attention in the old Soviet bloc.

Collective sports is nothing more than popular entertainment. Turning mass gatherings into nationalistic festivals, however briefly, isn’t a pro-freedom thing — it’s a positive danger.

Pro football is the worst, incidentally. The nationalistic pageantry gets spookier and spookier the deeper the playoffs run — complete with fighter jet flyovers and flags as big as the entire football field…

Ok,

I checked your site. According to it, our military budget is ten times greater than our nearest competitor. And roughly equal to the next 15 largest militaries combined. That is compelling enough.

But the figure of $515 billion is controversial as there have regular supplements for wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and does not include things like the VA and CIA etc.

I have read figures saying that total US annual defense expenditures are as high as $1 trillion per year, which would make my statement accurate.

This is a complete non-controversy. I could care less what a player does during the anthem. I wouldn’t condone outright disrespect – but this is not what we’re talking about here. And even if someone wanted to jump on a flag during the anthem, that’s their right. I’d think they were an idiot and wouldn’t want them on the team regardless of ability, but it is not anyone’s place to dictate to someone else what is “acceptable” manifestation of patriotism, or try to shame them into faking it.

I kinda agree with him though, on certain points.

Look, I totally think that Roy having time to himself is awesome, but I don’t understand why he thinks that what he is doing is not going to have an effect on the other guys. Why wouldn’t he reserve a minute or two before the anthem or after to pray? It’s a time to unite with your fellow teamates and coaches to look into the eyes of the opponent, and to embrace the challenges that are in front of you. Alot of people are saying, “Geeeeez, it’s just a song get over it.” That’s exactly what I’m thinking, but I’m also thinking why not hang out with your team in the middle of the court for a couple minutes. If they’re gonna get rid of the national anthem that’s fine by me, but since it’s still being played for games at least pay respect to the person that’s singing the dang song. It’s just weird to me that’s all, and I still love Brandon just the same. Can’t wait for the day when half the team is in the tunnel, and half the crowd is sitting down texting to friends while the anthem singer is belting their heart out.

Actually, Brandon Roy gets some blame for pandering to John Canzano's jingoistic demagoguery.

My hope was that Roy would ignore this vacuous bullcrap and keep doing what he does without letting others — particularly a rabble-rousing lummox like John Canzano — change his pre-game routine; yet, as it is, #7 seemingly didn’t have the fortitude to stand up for himself. Oh well, maybe Roy thought that it wasn’t worth the hassle. Even then, though, that sets a scary precedent, as one should always stand up and fight back against incendiary diatribes like the one spouted by that cretin Canzano.

My hope is they at least blackball him

Hopefully none of the players go in his radio show or interview for his column from now on.

Yeah, a boycott seems like the most productive way for them to counter John Canzano.

Maybe, contrary to Canzano's ravings, Brandon is such a team player

that he subsumes his own feelings and beliefs for what he sees as the good of the group. He doesn’t want a stupid focus like Canzano’s drivel to distract from the common goal. I respect him for that but think Canzano is as despicable as any of the right wing radio blatherers we’re subjected to on the airwaves who crucify people over made up indiscretions at the drop of a hat. I smell Lars Larsen in this fiasco. I think Canzano was even on Larsen’s show talking about this wasn’t he? Why do I think that?

exactly

Pick your battles. Unless Roy was trying to make some statement by sitting in the tunnel, its easier to just go out for the anthem and end the controversy. Let it blow over and then he can go back to his normal routine when clownzano isn’t breathing down his neck ….

And Canzano will take his punishment as diminished reputation among peers

Yes he got a short term ratings spike, but like many instant gratification things it will hurt long-term. Other journalists are already calling him out with disgust in their voices. And you can bet Roy (or the rest of the team) won’t be as willing to share with him in the future.

Ben is a Twitter monster
if there was one thing we didn’t need in blazers coverage, it was the birther movement.

That sound you just heard was Canzano hitting the canvas, and he’s not getting up.

The Blazerverse and The Wire: A comparison
Brandon Roy = Stringer Bell (smooth technician dedicated to his craft)
Nate McMiillan = Cedric Daniels (well intentioned leader, but he can be too rigid for his own good at times)
Martell Webster = Wee Bey Brice (straight up solider who follows orders; every organization needs these guys to be successful)
Jerryd Bayless = Marlo Stanfield (he's new to the game, but he's watching and waitng; he will take over and there will be casualties)
Rudy Fernandez = Jimmy McNulty (he gets results, but the leadership wishes he was less of a wild man; the ladies love him)
Greg Oden = Michael Lee (he started off a quiet kid, but he's beginning to tap in to his huge potential to change the game)
Andre Miller = Lester Freamon (do not let the laconic demeanor fool you, the veteran knows what's up)
John Canzano = Scott Templeton (scummy muckraker who stays up at night polishing his award)

by blazeraddict on Nov 25, 2009 4:56 PM PST reply actions

It's too bad Canzano pointed this out.

Obviously Canzano is bringing this out now for his own benefit. Roy has made some diva like comments lately, so Canzano sees that as a time to bust this out. Put that aside though and try to look at it from an honest perspective.

If this was Kobe or someone else with a less than stellar image, would you hate on them? Of course you would. It’s not about Patriotism, it’s about thinking it’s ok to go over by yourself and away from the team during the national anthem, a pregame TEAM ritual as old as the game. How many players would think this ok to do? It makes it even worse that it has nothing to with having something against the anthem, he just does what Roy wants to do.

I still am a big Roy fan, but he has been less than impressive this year when it comes to some of his off court antics. Anyone else and he’d be getting plenty more diva and selfish comments.

by Coastie07 on Nov 25, 2009 5:24 PM PST reply actions

Yeah, I agree.

If the entire Blazer team skipped the anthem I think the majority of Blazer fans would be disappointed and embarrassed.

It’s really a moot point. Roy is going to stay with the team during the anthem, so it doesn’t matter anymore.

JC is taking his initials too seriously

When was the last time he walked on water? C’mon John- you know as well as anyone that Brandon’s commitment to the team, the organization, and the game is impeccable. Who else could say – believably – after scoring 52 in a game, “I would have been happy with 10 points and the win”…?

Find a better subject to write on, and stop politicizing Brandon’s personal life…

by callmechristian on Nov 26, 2009 11:54 PM PST reply actions

Congrats John!

You,ve officially declared to us that you know your newspaper is weeks away from folding and Portland is about to become the first “blogtown u.s.a.” You’re a radio host first, a writer after. If you had your own blog, you would never dream of writing such sensational articles.

Is this your goal? Despite your unarguable values to life, expressed on your radio program, is it true that your entire goal is to get readers or listeners at any cost? Forget humility? I mean have some pride bro!?

You know Brandon, you’ve spent days with him compared to your readers. Are you really questioning his choices? His personal choices? Do you really think he deserves this criticism? Did you jiz when you saw him with the rest of the team Wednesday, knowing you got your wish? Now everything was right in the world, Roy stood in line. If Roy spent one more second than he already does, standing in line for you fools, the newspapers would’ve been dropped completely by now. Here’s to you expediting that reality with your paparazzi tabloid stories.

Always Bedge before you O. Not to kill the O, but to inform them how media should be presented in the modern age, realistically.

What if? A different take on Roy’s Tunnel-Gate

What if the Blazer front office was having a problem with Roy’s actions? Perhaps they have been trying to convince him that for the good of the Blazer brand name, that it would be best for him to stay on the court with the rest of his teammates during the singing of the Star Spangled Banner? What if, after having seeing players like Bayless and L.A. do the same thing a few times recently they decided that they had seen enough and that it was time to enlist the help of a local sports writer, and have him go public with the issue? It would not be the 1st time that this sort of thing has happened

Canzano is a troll

And that troll is being fed. Its another non-issue among the many non-issues written by this guy. Calling out that hack for his divisive “journalism” is exactly what he thrives on. We should treat his articles the way you treat the kid in grade school who always acts up for attention- by ignoring the brat. Anyone else in favor of a “ban all comments regarding Canzano”? Its hard to turn a blind eye to muck being thrown all over your favorite team, but it may be the only way to turn off the spigot of crap that continuously flows from the pen of Canzano.

Wrong

As you say, the Bald Headed Twerp thrives on angry criticism. He prides himself on having a thick skin; he stirs up controversy for its own sake. But ignoring him isn’t the way to go.

The best way to deal with this smarmy, ratings-hungry “journalist” is to make fun of him. The guy has a remarkably thin skin when it comes to ridicule—understandably because he’s so completely ridiculous.

I mean, I laughed uncontrollably the time I tuned into his show to hear him bragging about how much weight he can bench press. What a pathetic, insecure clown!

It is just painful to have to deal with someone so infantile. But if ridicule is the way to go to oust this vulture from his perch, so be it. I don't know anyone who litters.

Is littering a big problem these days?

I haven’t seen a white dude pretending to be an Indian Chief crying about litter for decades now.

We all pretty much love our country, but we’re mad at Canzano for questioning Roy’s love of it. We aren’t calling Roy out, and at the same time littering or doing negative things for our country. If THAT was what was happening then what you say would maybe make more sense to me.

If you can, please elaborate what you mean with your comment, just so we can know what each other are trying to say.

Blazer fans disgruntled? Maybe I can toss in some Roy hate!!!

I haven’t not read the article and I don’t plan to. I don’t need to. Canzano will either piss people off or attempt to make them cry. I absolutely despise him and haven’t read anything by him in since sometime last year.

As for Roy… why is he special? He should be out there with his team mates. This is sports, it’s a show, and that is part of the show. I don’t think Roy is unAmerican for wanting to do it his own way, but what if the entire team did it their own way? You no longer have a team out there. (hmmm… sort of like the last two games actually)

Canzano is a putz, but the ultimate point that Roy should be out there WITH his team is valid.

You have a problem with the rest… JUST STOP READING AND WRITING ABOUT HIM!!! your life will be better for it, i promise.
