The best part is that those little guards are between 6'2 and 6'7.

You are big when that’s little.

I love this guy !

It is so great to see him coming into the dominating player so many imagined him to be. And I admit I had some doubts. I am delighted to say, I was wrong. I have always enjoyed his personality, his candor, his charm. With all the public criticism and hype, none of which was through any fault of his own, exacerbated but the knee surgery, how nice to see him come through it and really start taking control on the NBA stage. Right now, Greg is my favorite (and most valuable) player on the team, and I like a lot of them. He is coming on fast. Forget about “if he can just become a defensive force”, he is already doing it a both ends. I expect him to continue to grow. It is a great time to be a Blazer fan.

yeah, good kid

The foul trouble thing is going away. i think the big thing that clicked for him is that he knows he will get scored on at this level, can’t stop everything. As his judgemnt improves on when NOT to challenge to tough he will run into foul trouble less and less. he is fast for a 7 foot back to the basket type player, so when he knows to back it off better it will all come to him…

Say what you want, but he's been our MVP this year.

Certainly not consistent, but name one player for the Blazers who has been consistent this season.

Ro- no wait.... Ald- nah...

Rudy has been consistent, but I’d say Oden has had a greater impact.

I like Rudy’s defense this year!

dunked on

i love the fact that hes got some swag and says hes hurtin from those “posterizations” (which is a term that needs to go by the wayside. from a literal standpoint too…who buys posters anymore?). i think when he gets angry or mean, he plays better. thats how shaq was too. but it needs to be channeled correctly because we all know shot blockers get dunked on so u dont want to get too caught up with it.

great game, great guy.

he was in vendetta mode last night

did you see when Noah dunked on him, he almost took the ball up himself, he was so ready to get back at him (and did, with a nice hook). And the crowd wanted it too—it was uncanny, like the whole Garden was calling for the ball to Greg. I think you’re absolutely right, when he gets beat it’s personal. I just hope he doesn’t let it cloud his focus. Often it’s not about a return humiliation, but staying doing what you’re doing.

Again, he sets the scoring bar at "10, 11 points" — which is VERY realistic (maybe even a touch low-endy).

Note also that on this career-ish night, with 24 points scored, Oden was on the floor 27 minutes.

He’s a 25 minutes guy, is probably always going to be a 25 minutes guy — but you can get a lot of very effective work done in that length of time.

I wouldn't say always

this year, yeah he’ll probably hover in that 25-30 minute range. But there is no reason he can’t become a 35 minute guy in another year or two.

How did you guys win that?

I was at the game and when he came out in the second quarter he was utterly and

completely gassed. He may play 35 minutes a night someday, but if he were to do it now it would be with a big drop off in energy.

by raoulduke on Nov 24, 2009 10:40 AM PST up reply actions

conditioning comes from playing

Greg has hardly played a full NBA season’s worth of games, and in many of the games last year he played less than 20 minutes. No matter how much you work out, the only way to really get in shape for the speed and intensity of the NBA is to play a ton of games. This is particularly true of big guys who have a ton of weight to move up and down the court.

So as Oden improves the foul situation and is regularly able to play 25 to 30 mins, he’ll develop into a guy who’s not gassed at the 30 min mark, and be able to push toward 30 to 35 mins on a regular basis.

by atomiccafe on Nov 25, 2009 1:53 PM PST up reply actions

Oden does need to cut fouls down.

His fouls per 36 minutes has only moved from 6.5 during his rookie season to 5.9 during this current season. This sets a cap on the minutes played even if McMillan tried to play him as much as possible. I believe the foul problems will be reduced in the future (maybe even later this season) and he’ll play more than 25 minutes per game.

That said, scoring 24 points in only 27 minutes is generally a good thing. I’d be very happy if the entire starting lineup could put up career numbers in fewer minutes.

by poster on Nov 24, 2009 10:18 AM PST up reply actions

Yes or No:

Has Oden plateaued?

Usually people get more minutes as they get better. They also get better at avoiding fouls & get the benefit of the doubt as they get better. They also get less winded as they get in better shape.

If Oden is at the pinnacle of his development, than you are correct. But if he improves, there is certainly room for Oden to get more minutes on average.

*Unless KP has a secret plan that makes this statement incorrect.

You're Faker hopefulness and worry is showing, Timbo...

He’s a 25 minutes guy, is probably always going to be a 25 minutes guy

What you are witnessing right now is Greg’s low point… He should get 30+ per game by playoff time… sorry Timbo… hope you enjoyed last year’s championship, because another one might be a while…
