Junk Drawer - 11/23/09 - Where's the stamp for my letter to Santa? Edition

Christmas (or Xmas or Solstice, if you prefer) is just around the corner and it seems that there are some in our hallowed ranks who have been put upon to make their Santy Claus lists already.

Star-divide

So let's all pitch in and talk about what we want on our lists.  This way, we can give each other ideas.  I'm sure we've all been good little girls and boys so none of us should have any trouble receiving what we so desperately hope to attain.

As for me, at the top of my list (as I've made known to my brother and sister multiple times) is the New Super Mario Brothers video game for Nintendo Wii.  This is because I'm nostalgic and just a kid at heart.  Plus a little bit of a nerd.  Hellllllooooo, ladies!  There are also always numerous DVDs (films and TV shows) I want every year but I won't list all those.

So have at it, junkers.  Spill your lists to the wide world and give us all extra ideas.  But remember this:  it really is better to give than to recieve, so if you know someone special that really really wants something, get it for them and watch their face light up like an overzealous person's front yard decorations.

those look pretty good. I’ve got some schwalbe slicks on my other wheels which I like quite a bit. I have a feeling come spring I’ll have to replace my wheels—I’ve already had them trued once and had the nipples froze, and my bike is only 6 months old.

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

by jonestr on Nov 23, 2009 10:08 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

back to the bike shop I bought it. They did the tune up for free. When I brought it in, they were like “how long have you had this” I said two months. They were shocked. I think I put close to 600 miles on it in the first 5 weeks… I was riding a lot

by EvilKaramazov on Nov 23, 2009 10:09 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

usually just dripping some tri flow on the nipples will help out, but machine built wheels are rarely properly tensioned and spoke prepped, so just buying some another wheelset, which maybe machine built, might not be the answer.

I would swing by sellwood and let them know the problem and they might be able to set you up with a decent set of handbuilt wheels or properly tension your current wheels.

by EvilKaramazov on Nov 23, 2009 10:30 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

a lot of buying a bike for me comes down to the shop

there is not a lot of brand difference at similar price points these days, but the difference in a well put together bike vs a thrown together bike will make a huge difference in the life of the bike and your happiness with it.

I would ask what the build procedure is for each shop before deciding on a model.

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

by jonestr on Nov 23, 2009 10:34 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

What are you looking for in that inquiry? The bike I bought, the mechanic said it is one of the better bikes to build—everything comes together well. It was one of the points he used to recommend the bike.

by EvilKaramazov on Nov 23, 2009 10:38 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Things I think are important

truing and tensioning the wheels

all cables lubed or greased

removing and greasing the bottom bracket

putting better grease than the stock crap that comes in the majority of hubs and headsets on bikes less than 1k$

greasing all the bolts

using a torque wrench where applicable

as an aside, I have worked in shops where the average build time was 20-30min where it was basically spot truing wheels, and adjusting gears and brakes, and I have worked in shops where we did all of the above. You cant tell the difference between those builds on a test ride, but 6 months down the road the differences really show.

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

by jonestr on Nov 23, 2009 10:46 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I would just add that river city has builders that get paid by the bike and not on an hourly rate, so their incentive is closer to the half hour build than it is to the hour long build.

it’s hype.. my boss has one, and half the time he can’t get a signal

Honor Jordan, Retire #45

by The Arkitect on Nov 23, 2009 10:17 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Digitizing something makes it clearer

because it is translated into 1’s and 0’s….with a regular radio wave as it gets distorted, the noise is replicated by your radio in the form of static. In a digital format, the 1’s and 0’s also get degraded …but…as long as the radio can tell a 1 from a 0…it can perfectly reproduce the original source ….perfect reception. The problem comes in when the 1s and 0s become too damaged to use…this results in drop outs

"And in the end
The love you take
Is equal to the love you make." -The Beatles

by 92wastheyear on Nov 23, 2009 10:27 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Another problem is when they want more channels and compress the signal

Then you’re dealing with compressed data plus dropouts. Double ouch.

Still nice to have more channels available over the air though.

by Timmay! on Nov 23, 2009 10:29 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

but you are just sampling an analog signal, so you will always lose something, so you will never have a perfect replication with a digitized signal

if your radio is amplifying noise it needs a better filter, and not necessarily a digital filter

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

by jonestr on Nov 23, 2009 10:31 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

No filter is needed on digital

it perfectly recreates whatever is sent out from the radio station….no possibility of static. Analog could use a filter…but any filtering process would also include signal loss

"And in the end
The love you take
Is equal to the love you make." -The Beatles

by 92wastheyear on Nov 23, 2009 10:58 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

if you are just digitizing a signal then you will get all of its warts and then some, and thus you use a digital filter to try and drop those warts

any kind of filter will lose some some of the signal, but the trick is to design filters that drop what you want and keep what you do want, and active filters can do that without degrading the signal of interest

digitization of a signal will always results in a loss of data. It is just the nature of the process.

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

by jonestr on Nov 23, 2009 11:02 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

you are talking about processing the signal before broadcast

not filtering it at the end user. Analog gets degraded during broadcast…digital doesn’t (at least not in a way the end user notices)

"And in the end
The love you take
Is equal to the love you make." -The Beatles

by 92wastheyear on Nov 23, 2009 11:06 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

some where along the line you have to do ADC, and no matter where that takes place, you will lose some of the data.

So far I see no reason how HD radio could possibly do any better than analog aside from the fact that they might do some really fancy filtering and rectification to make things sound better than a poorly designed analog system.

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

by jonestr on Nov 23, 2009 11:10 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

We are talking about 2 different things

If the quality of the broadcasts are the same at the time of broadcast…then the user will get a better results with digital….hands down…that is what I have been saying.

You seem to be talking about loss happening during the Analog to digital conversion…which would happen before broadcast. I can’t speak to that since I am not in the radio biz

I figure that brick and mortar needs to come up with a way to compete with online stuff. If I find a store where I feel that I get something more than I can online I will do it.

For instance, I know enough about bikes where I dont need to go to bike shops, but for something like stereo equipment, I need someone with expertise, so I would shop brick and mortar.

Not to be all Debbie Downer

But an article on How outlet malls fool shoppers into thinking they’re getting deals.

My favorite: Some chains know the outlet malls are so popular, they actually are making lower-quality items to sell cheaper there.

I linked to the lifehacker article for the bullet points. The longer article is attached but for a lot of folks, it would be a TL;DR.

back like 10 years ago when going 3 hrs early was enough to get big ticket items. Nowadays you have to miss thanksgiving dinner to save like 100 bucks…no thanks. I remember when my friends and I had strike teams for like 3-4 years and we each got every big ticket item we wanted.

It's been called "Black Friday" since at least the 60's

The official term was established about 1975, but it was termed for a long-time practice of shopping after Thanksgiving.

It’s actually often not the busiest shopping day of the year btw. That’s typically the Sat or Sun prior to Christmas.

They weren’t always called Doorbusters, but it’s been traditional for a long time to have special deals for the first few hours of store opening on Friday.

by Timmay! on Nov 23, 2009 12:52 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

thanks for the clarification

it seems like the camping for items has gotten earlier and earlier every year. i skipped 3 years of black fridays and did it 2 years ago, and when i found out people were skipping thxigiving to be in line in order to get door busters, i said screw this. i’ll stick to online shopping. plus amex daily wish is enough of a bonus for me that i dont need door busters.

I do think camping is getting earlier.

While it was previously sporadic, it seems to be more common to have midnight shopping, for example.

ya i heard that a lot of retailers were going to do that this year

those are mostly the malls and clothing retailers tho right? if wal mart or target has some bf stuff i want, i may just buy em now and get em price adjusted…but i dont think i’ll ever go to best buy for theirs anymore.

Are they allowing price adjustments for BF items?

I could have sworn they disallow that.

Not sure on who’s doing midnight shopping this year. Usually Kohls will, and they’re mainly clothing of course.

We’ll do our usual BF tradition over here: Sleep in. then we’ll hit lunch next to the Target, and stop by at noon to pick up the any sale stuff (DVD’s and the like) that is usually well-stocked and cheap.

by Timmay! on Nov 23, 2009 1:03 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm recovering from microfracture as well

I injured my knee at Skibowl 2 seasons ago. It’s a long slow recovery and I’ve had a few setbacks but it I’m feeling pretty strong this season.

My doc never put me on the CPM machine. I was also stoked to be able to get back on my bike. I was able to ride to class before I could walk without crutches, so I felt pretty rad riding around with crutches in my backpack.

I rode 200 miles in 1 day for STP earlier this summer, knee felt great. I ran Hood to Coast as well… knee felt ok. I’ve been playing pick up ball lately and yesterday I had an awesome time on the mountain so I’m stoked. Even though it’s coming up on 2 years I’m not 100% but it still seems to be slowly improving and it doesn’t hold me back.

the backside of the patela….about a thumbnail size hole in the cartilage. Since it’s not a weightbearing location, it does get me on my feet sooner…..but it is why I need to keep flexing the knee….to help shape the new growth.

Walking with a knee immobilizer on is technically walking….but it sure looks and feels a lot funnier than walking. Looks more like a seriously drunk penguin.

I do.

We have a neighbor that reports EVERYTHING to the HOA and he’s a huge zach. The people right next door to him built a fence between their houses so they didn’t have to deal with him looking into their yard. The rest of the houses around call it the Zach You Fence.

You should definitely let the HOA handle it though if their dogs crap in your yard.

Crum, A. J. & Langer, E. J. (2007). Mindset Matters: Exercise and the Placebo Effect. That’s a pretty good one, they made one group of people cleaning hotel rooms believe that their work was good for their health with astonishing results. It all depends on how you value your work.

well I don’t know what you studied or the direction of the class, but two major themes jump out at me: technology/tactics in battle (the Hoplites) or how that battle saved Greek culture, which in turn rippled through Western Society. If you’re a law cat, I’d recommend the latter. I’d divide the paper into the cultural dominance of Persia and the ramifications of a Persian victory and then, compare that to the small Greek culture of the time and the consequential influence that has spawned from the Greeks.

What’s this class? what else did you study? Did you guys read herodotus?

hmmm.. Well, I’d scrap what I said before. I haven’t read herodotus in many moons. I think the most important thing to do, is look for an angle—maybe like how the Greeks won, per Herodotus—talk about tactics vs numbers. What you don’t want to write, is a play by play account of the battle. Avoid something really boring for you to write, cause I will be equally boring to read/grade.

per chris sheridan

How long will it be until Roy and Miller CAN play together? Ever?
Chris Sheridan
  (3:12 PM)

That’s the question of the day in Portland, Luke, and I don’t have the answer any more than Nate McMillan does. I never saw the Miller signing as a good fit, just the Blazers scooping up the best available remaining free agent — pretty much spending their cap space while they still had an opportunity to do so. So I could see them moving Andre if the right deal came along and then giving a larger role to Rudy Fernandez, who I feel is their third-best player behind Brandon and LaMarcus.

Most fouls = his fault

I’m maybe the biggest Oden-Homer around, literally, and I still say the foul problems are mostly his fault.

He gets picked on, there are bad calls, we put pressure on him with weak perimeter defenders, but he knows better for most of those calls and it makes the bad ones worse because it takes him out of the game.

His foul rate hasn’t gone down a LOT, but I’d also say the type of fouls he’s getting now are better. No more hip checking drivers for no reason. He can get out of the way easier.

Oden’s foul problems, and not being able to trust him to manage it, is the cause of his minutes being down.

I know it will turnaround and then his stats will reflect his impact.

by Mortimer on Nov 23, 2009 2:06 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I'd say 80% are his own doing

he still brings his arms down, hips checks too much and gets his body into drivers

other times though, he just gets called for stuff that is absurd. Or doesn’t get calls that would be called against him….like that “block” on a dunk by the D league guy that the Warriors brought up.

He’s doing better letting some plays go, though.

You won.

by Magnum on Nov 23, 2009 2:08 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

He gets picked on, for sure

It is lame.

But, the problem is, it often happens before or after a silly rookie foul that he knows better than to do. Making it a bigger problem.

And doing silly fouls is why he doesn’t get the benefit of the doubt from refs unless he is blocking a shot.

It isn’t fair at all, but it ’tis what it ’tis.

by Mortimer on Nov 23, 2009 2:14 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

i still think

he will never become a star until the refs think he is one.
its as simple as that. because of his size, his game is predicated on not pissing off the refs.

also sometimes I wish I hadn’t read that donaghy excerpt on deadspin, because I see shades of those things all the time with Oden.

but 1 foul per quarter and sit him is probably the most moronic idea ever. I understand it served a purpose to make greg think about it, but the longer we do it the more games we lose to teams like GS

by GreatOden'sRaven on Nov 23, 2009 2:10 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Luckily

That is supposedly ending tonight.

I didn’t mind it as much as most, except when it applies to LMA. Doing it to LMA makes zero sense.

I don’t mind Oden having a better shot at getting a rhythm because he has 4 fouls to play with in the 2nd half… plus it made it more likely he’d made it to crunch time without bad foul problems.

The only time I get angry/annoyed about him not playing is when the game is in hand… he needs development still, lots of it, and those are great chances to work on moves and gain more confidence.

if you never learn how to play with fouls

you will never play more than 20 min a game.
nate needs to let Oden grow up

by GreatOden'sRaven on Nov 23, 2009 2:16 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, he needs to learn it

But his foul rate was still crazy; he wasn’t learning anything. Just constantly being pulled out for fouls.

And if you think any coach will let his best two-way player foul out in the 3rd quarter, you’re nutzo dude! Straight BUGS.

Nate can’t trust Oden to not get another quick 2 fouls after the first two, so Oden’s gotta show he can do it. And by being so damn dominant that NBA refs don’t dare to whistle him for chicken poop calls.

As we’ve previously discussed, increased attention at the offensive end would go a long way for referee perception.

I see your point, I do,

but 2 fouls and your out in quarter 2?
umm no

by GreatOden'sRaven on Nov 23, 2009 2:22 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Here's how it usually played out though

Oden plays, gets foul #3 in the 2nd quarter, and sits.

He starts the 2nd half. Gets foul #4 quickly. Sits.

Then we want to save him for the 4th. Then he can only get one more foul and he’s limited.

I hope Oden can stay out of foul trouble more than anyone, but the last thing he has shown is the ability to handle it.

by Mortimer on Nov 23, 2009 2:24 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

To me, it all equals no good solution

Until Oden can stay out of regular foul trouble.

Every big gets in foul trouble, but not every single game in only 24 minutes.

by Mortimer on Nov 23, 2009 2:26 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

i think it has more to do with changing refs perception of greg

than it does with greg at this point. it seems to be working as greg isn’t logging nearly as many fouls and ticky tack fouls in the past.

I meant in terms of his production in crunch time

The last 3 years he was top 25 there, and clearly would have been the #2 behind Roy.

Ford is good when reporting things someone told him, bad when he scouts himself

Which is ironic/moronic, since he teaches scouting classes.

Yeah, for whatever reason, I don't mind him as much when he's wrong.

I agree he seems like a better reporter than an analyst, which is almost all of the ESPN guys.

Where does he teach scouting classes?

His wikipedia page only states that he teaches cultural conflict resolution

I'm sure he had some bad reason to not like Pavel and prefer Harris

Maybe Pavel didn’t shoot 5 threes a game or something.

I guess the main problem was that he didn’t stop growing. Bill Simmons threw up a “Must improve: Genetic deficiency” in his draft day diary.

and then giving a larger role to Rudy Fernandez, who I feel is their third-best player behind Brandon and LaMarcus.

Oden might be our 2nd best player right now. And the advanced stats say he is the best.

So all

fill me in, what happened this weekend? Wifey had a milestone bday so we did a bunch of stuff, took her out a lot and was out of the look.
Got around to finally watching the games on my DVR. Thank God for the Twolves game because I was about to get on a plane, fly to Portland, find Nate and punch him in the balls for coaching like his players were in elementary school. If it wasnt for the easy win vs twolves I would have been livid.
So what happened that was cool at BE?
