I hate the way roy is playing
Don't get me wrong, Roy is a stud. He produces in every category and is clearly one of the top shooting guards in the league, but watching him strut his way through these first fourteen games has been infuriating. Its like one of those eighties teen movies where the ugly duckling gets a makeover by the popular kid and finds his popularity. Then his head gets too big and he turns into the very monster that had been making his life hell. Roy used to be the plucky underdog. He used to be the unlikely hero. Now he looks like the pretty girl who knows she doesn't have to do much to get what she wants. I've have watched him jog up court on the fast break, walk around picks at a tortes pace with one hand out calling for the ball, linger at the other end of the court to argue calls, and worst of all, holding the ball and jacking up fade away jumpers rather than putting his head down and taking it to the rack. Now, its a testament to his greatness that he is still filling the stat sheet, but this is the root of the blazers problem right now. Big contracts, expectation, delusions of grandeur. The blazer teams of the past three years won by out working you. This team doesn't feel it was to work any more and that starts with Brandon. Watch Kobe, Wade, Lebron, and you see the fight in them. They all play like their hair is on fire. Flying around the court, throwing their bodies around. This is what is expected of your superstar, and right now the blazers aren't getting it from theirs.
That said, its still early. Maybe all this will be sorted out when the lineup is( please let that be soon). Maybe Roy is just pacing himself for a long difficult run at greatness. Maybe its just a result of incorporating the new ingredients. I just hope, for the sake of the blazers and all their fans, that this is just a slow start and not the unmasking of the franchises cornerstone. We all know Roy is the hot chick...lets just hope he's not content with that.

patience...
but I couldn’t have said it any better
uwe blab
selfish...
i did say it alot better :)
The Faith don't panic, the faith freaks out, burns out farms, and torchs small villages in the name of The Faith.
Sadly, I have a hard time disagreeing with what you said.
He’s not playing with that sense of urgency, and it’s sending the wrong message to the rest of the team.
I dunno,
maybe he is hurt or something. But you are right, where is the fire and the willingness to jump into it for your team. The organization that just paid you 80 mil…
he is not hurt. he just thinks he can turn on a switch every game without the hard work from last season and prior.
he’s made it now and feels like he can do it anytime. he remembers all the good but does not remember as vividly all the hard work he put in to get where he had, all the no calls he endured to get the calls he did, all the hustle that won us games.
Please, for the love of all that is holy, please stop using the following: "Book it.", "FTW", "Epic" & "Fail".
...no seriously--stop.
We are 10-5
Seriously.
What is wrong with you people?
Lackadaisical
I agree with you it appears our hero is slacking. It seems he’s thinking about things and it’s costing him a split second. He can’t afford that split second, it’s his edge. Or maybe his summer workout and weight loss program was counter-productive and he lost strength. His mind is definitely out ahead of his body on numerous plays (most plays?) like an old player who know how to do it but the body won’t respond. He’s hit a wall.
I agree with what is being said here.
I forget what game it was but I believe it was the end of the 3rd quarter with 6.5 seconds left. The ball was inbound to Brandon and he casually jogged up the floor and took a low percentage shot well behind the arc. Instead he could have sprinted up the floor and drove to the rim and would have probably gone to the charity stripe.
I certainly get a sense that he is coasting. I know he wants to be a team player and get others involved but maybe he needs to put a bigger Brandon Roy stamp on the games. Since he just got paid the big bucks one would think that he’d want to show everyone that he’s earning it. I still love ‘em but I know he can be doing better and I’m sure he’ll get it turned around shortly.
Totally disagree
hey skott75, you should check out the “Mr. McMillan Meet Reality” Post.
I read it and believe it's beside the point
it’s not incorrect just doesn’t get to the heart of anything. For one thing, the topic is too large. This Roy topic on the other hand is concise and understandable. What ails our star player? Laying a guilt trip on Nate wouldn’t enlighten this topic.
Yeah I read it
and I agree that Brandon should not be playing the 3, Nate’s 3 guard lineup is not working, Nate is keeping blake in the lineup for personal reasons, and greg does need more minutes, but none of these thing address what looks to me like a superstar resting on his laurels and giving less that 100%. There is no amount of bad coaching or lineup problems that could keep the other superstars from shining. Lebron, Kobe, Wade.
I have to agree with you that Roy isn't giving his best effort.
However, I look at this problem as not an issue of Roy not wanting to put forth the effort but not comfortable with what is expected, not having the ability to perform the same against bigger and stronger players and the fact that he’s having to change the style of play he’s supposed to provide all at the same time.
It isn’t an excuse for staying behind and arguing calls or lazily walking around picks and throwing up fade-away jumpers, but I don’t think it’s equally Nate’s changes as much as it could be Roy’s effort.
"She turned me into a newt!
A newt?
...I got better."
Brandon isn't Michael J. Fox in Teen Wolf...
…or the pretty girl in high school!
How many of you will feel this way when the playoffs come around and not only does Brandon have something left in the tank but supporting players have grown with increased opportunities?
We need to get past this short sighted mindset. We are striving to be a legitimate playoff contender… you know the kind of team that grows throughout the regular season and is firing on all cylinders as the playoffs come around.
Feel free to worry about individual games and individual performances but try to see the big picture… Brandon is not the kind of guy to get fat n happy… He wants to win! I have no doubt the pieces will all fall together… just give it time.
Great game tonight Marty… and how bout that Steve Blake?
GO BLAZERS!!!
I left room for that possibility
but I just don’t see any other superstar playing that way right now, and that is the category we all place Roy in…SUPERSTAR. Kobe plays with five guys who need the ball, and he’s averaging 30 point a game and plays every possession. Do think Wade would complain about having a top ten point gaurd in his starting lineup?
You left room for that possibility?..
You wrote an unfounded fluff post about Brandon being a shallow Barbie Doll that is sitting back enjoying his money!
If you choose to view Roy that way fine… Sure as heck doesn’t mean I will buy into it just because you said it.
I personally don’t care what K*be or Wade are averaging and I am not impressed by you fabricating that Roy “complained” about having a top 10 PG in the starting line up. You and the other negative nellies made that up…not Roy.
It’s 15 games into the season… a season that will end in a playoff run… and you are passing judgement and calling out Brandon Roy like you know what he’s thinking. I prefer a post with either some insight or some facts… In yours I found neither.

Brandon Roy is thinking about the post season.
The problem isn’t Roy, but his play is one of the symptoms. The problems are the failed bandaid on the point guard position, the lack of production from the small forward, the learning curve involved in addressing the overall team defense deficiencies , and the difficulty integrating Oden as a post threat and moving away from jump shooting as the mainstay of the offense.
All of those problems effect Roy’s play. The answer at point has to play the position effectively and mesh with Roy’s abilities on offense. One of the point guards runs the position effectively and the other meshes with Roy. The lack of production at SF due to Martell’s returning from injury and the injuries to Batum and Travis resulted, up until this last game, in Roy playing out of position at SF. Improved defense was made a primary goal by both Nate and Roy at the beginning of this season, however the loss of Batum and the above problems at PG left Roy struggling to play defense out of position on much taller players. A struggle I might add that he often seemed either too exhausted or too frustrated to meet whole heartedly. Finally integrating Oden in the offense has been difficult for Roy as he has limited experience in passing into the low post, and the efficient style of half court offense that they run suffers when Oden can’t manage his turnovers. Not to mention the introduction of new sets that focus away from the high pick and roll and pick and pop that Roy had been running all last year with LMA.
Some point to Roy’s apparent bad play, or Nate’s obvious mangling of rotations as evidence of laziness or ineptitude. It is my opinion that we are seeing a team undergoing a major growth period after a year of over achievement. The Injuries have hampered a smooth transition to a more defensive oriented, low post scoring and running ball club. The safe reaction would be to fall back into the Roy centered offense that makes him look like such an amazing player. I am concerned that that will stunt the growth of the club into a true elite contender.
End of rant.
My team went to the playoffs in my first year.
you make some good points
but you have to admitt that it is not a good sign that our “superstar” has a hard time playing with other talent. That is going to be a big deal down the road. Like I alluded to, hopefully this is just an adjustment period, but the fact that playing with oden and miller( two upgraded talents over last year) has been difficult for Roy, is a scary sign.
Why does Brandon Roy need to adjust to an incoming Role Player?
Sorry, but this is Brandon Roy’s team. Andre Miller will be gone after next season, and Brandon will be here.
Miller is a step up from Sergio — which is what we were looking for.
Miller is the player who should be adjusting HIS game to get Brandon Roy to play better.
Remember that we are 10-5 right now.
That pace gives us 60 wins.
Stop looking for things to complain about.
I'm more worried about his defense
although this may have to do with him playing out of position for a lot of games.
All the talk about him aiming the All-Defensive team seems very silly now.
Hmm, I want to watch Can't Buy Me Love right now for some reason.
Dear Paul Allen:
Fire Nate McMillan & hire Jeff Van Gundy.
Sincerely,
AK1984
I wish i could disagree
But I can’t. From what I have heard he does not like playing with Miller as much as Blake and it sounds like he is throwing a fit about it. What’s ironic is that even when he is playing with Blake he still doesn’t do too well. I’m not worried, I think he will get better as the season progresses but I do think he needs to grow up and play like the All Star he is.
Not feeling the B Roy hate
He’s had a slow start for the season but his game looks about the same to me as it has since entering the league. If you don’t like the way Roy plays I suggest you find another team to root for. Brandon is the player that brought this team back to relevancy. If you want to complain about a player who got a big contract and has underperformed I would suggest LaMarcus, who’s not even “filling the stat sheet.”

LaMarcus has been extrememly constent
He is getting more rebounds this season, and his defense seems better.
