They played for 48 mins and got the W. It was nice to see webster show up tonight and roy and blake feed oden. Nice game

I said in the game thread in the first quarter that this looked like the Blazers from last year.

I was right. By the way I think I predicted the score to be 104-82 Blazers. I might be right on. How do you check?

It wast the T'wolve.

Last year…..this year. T’wolves. 21 and 13 from Webster though? Nice.

its so evident we need him with no Trout and Batum

Yes, but it was great basketball. You didn't have Andre wasting 24 seconds and the Blazers getting bad looks.

Roy was getting to the line, they were hitting open 3’s. It’s a step in the right direction. The biggest step they have made all year.

by BRoyInThe4th on Nov 21, 2009 9:30 PM PST up reply actions

Blake takes open shots

and he doesn’t scream for the rock when he is open. He gets good looks because his teammates trust him when the defenses sag off him. He is a good 3 point shooter and makes a decent enough %. Rag on Blake for something legit.

by matthewcc on Nov 21, 2009 9:33 PM PST reply actions

Nate seems content splitting the minutes evenly amongst Pryz/Oden

Dont know if I can argue with that either…. its a huge advantage with both of them and a luxury not many teams can say they have.

Nice win but...

Any one can look like a genius against Min. I still don’t like the Blake starting. It is crazy to me when you compare the two players numbers that he still goes with Blake. Oden needs as many minutes as possible against this type of team. We should be focusing on him with these trash games. This is not a recipe for success against better NBA teams. Go BLAZERS!

by socaltaoist on Nov 21, 2009 9:33 PM PST reply actions

I think Martell is the key...

He’s the only guy that will send Blake to the bench. If Martell can provide the spot-up shooting and decent defense on small forwards, then Roy/LA/Oden/Miller/Webster works. If Webster could play every night like the second half, we’d have our problem solved.

Not sure. If Roy makes it, it will be because Portland is rocking and the coaches need a token Portland player...

If their stats are comparable (which they are), Williams will get the “make up”/sympathy vote and it will be him in and Roy out.

Nash will probably be back in

but Shaq, West and Yao will all be out. You’re probably right about Billups, too.

Durant and Deron are the clear next in lines, though. Even though the positions don’t match up, there should be plenty of open all star spots in the west for the grabs, especially if Parker misses more time.

by Royster on Nov 21, 2009 10:54 PM PST up reply actions

this will be the team, book it:

Starters: Paul, Bryant, Anthony, Duncan, Stoudemire
Reserves: Williams, Roy, Durant, Nowitzki, Gasol, Bynum, Nash

Kaman and Nene are darkhorses to make it over Bynum. The other 11 are pretty close to locked in, IMO.

by jksnake99 on Nov 21, 2009 10:56 PM PST up reply actions

LA's going to have to rip off a pretty serious run

to merit three all stars. If there’s another similarly deserving candidate from a team with a similar record, it’s hard to see Bynum getting the bid. Can’t imagine both him and Gasol putting up the same numbers with both of them around. It’s possible due to the dearth of big men but you never know.

You still have younger Gasol as a dark horse as well, IMHO, but he’ll probably get submarined for the same reason that Al Jefferson missed out last year. Needless to say, I hope we can submarine any LaMarcus all star talk early this year.

by Royster on Nov 21, 2009 11:03 PM PST up reply actions

The coaches like to give each playoff team an all-star. Duncan as a Spur, Roy as a Blazer, Deron as a Utahan, Melo as a Nugget, Durant as a “Thunder.”

Houston won’t get an all-star, though.

i cry for nic

by Cablinasian on Nov 21, 2009 10:57 PM PST up reply actions

I could see that if it came down to those two.

However, the Spurs and Nuggets will both have ASG reps in Tim and ’Melo, so both Williams and Roy will have the edge over Parker and Billups.

Timbo was halfway correct regarding your reboudning debate, as Joel Przybilla is still a more ...

proficient defensive rebounder than Greg Oden. Oden is substantially more effective on the offensive glass, though, and that’s just the tip of it. Yet, that notwithstanding, Timbo’s unyielding contempt for Oden is irrational, incongruous flapdoodle — with "flapdoodle" just beating out horsefeathers as my word of choice — but to each their own.

Anyway, I’m surprised that there hasn’t been more backlash against Timbo until only recently. Heck, I’ve got a hoard of haters railing against me in spite of my lofty track record — which admittedly has a few blemishes, but nobody’s analyses is spotless — yet, there’s nothing I can do about it.

will do.

Based on last season— Williams’ 4th and Roy’s 3rd, both age 24:

They had the same TS%, Roy was a much better rebounder, Williams produced a lot more assists and turned it over a lot more (similar ast/to ratios), Roy produced more points per minute (despite our much slower pace), and had edges over Williams in offensive rating, defensive rating, win shares, WARP and PER.

by jksnake99 on Nov 21, 2009 10:15 PM PST up reply actions

Let's talk about this year...

Williams: 39.7 minutes, 20.4 points pg, 9.8 assists pg, 5.0 rebounds pg, 47% from the floor, 35.9% from distance

Roy: 36.8 minutes, 20.1 points pg, 4.9 assists pg, 4.8 rebounds pg, 44.1% from the floor, 35.3% from distance

And your point is………???

Roy is clearly off and still holding about even with Williams. If you’d like to argue that Roy will not improve and that last year was a fluke, that is a valid argument.

Saying that last year doesn’t matter is a little short-sighted.

The Jazz play a higher pace, obscuring the data. Also, Deron turns the ball over a lot ,which makes his assists numbers less impressive.

The correct retort is that Deron plays the 1 and Brandon purports to play the 3, so they are comparable at all...

You have to use a variety of stats, they need to be pace-adjusted and they need to consider efficiency. With defense, you do have to use your eyes at times as the stats aren’t to the point they are for offense.

Still not happy with the decision to start Blake

We’ve seen the end to this movie. We can either try something different to attempt to get better, or we can go back to this, win a bunch of games, and get owned in the playoffs.

Also, if last night wasn’t enough to get Dante in the game before Juwan, I don’t know what will be. Sigh.

Also, Bayless just played 8 minutes in a 30 point blowout. Nice.

by jksnake99 on Nov 21, 2009 9:39 PM PST reply actions

I think Nate wanted to achieve multiple things with that move, some of which include a) the second unit played like crap and needed a second scorer and stability, b) the first unit needs to play over Roy more again, c) Miller is pretty banged up, d) Martell plays better when he gets more playing time, a la Channing. He’s no spark-plug off the bench like Rudy often is.

What second unit?

The second unit that plays with no starters? How many minutes are those guys getting? Five? Seems like every rotation has a several scorers.

We overvalue “units” on this board completely. You start your best five guys because other teams are playing their best five (save one).

by thelance on Nov 21, 2009 10:22 PM PST up reply actions

Indeed

This isn’t hockey or soccer. You don’t need two rotation of decent players.

3 stars and role players enough for a 8 man rotation is a tried and true way to win in NBA ball.

Agree 100%

At least one (preferably two) of Roy, LMA, Oden, Dre and Rudy should be on the floor at all times when the game is in doubt. Those are the best perimeter and post offensive presences on this team. Mix and match the other pieces as the game dictates, but leave a creator/post presence out there, no need for line changes

At least 3 teams keep one of their best players in the second group: Lakers, Mavs, and Spurs. No matter if you call it a unit or first guy(s) off the bench, Blake isn’t the guy to create shots for himself when Roy is off the court.

The thing I noticed with Martell for several seasons is that he always has to start out good.

Pre-injury, if his shots don’t fall, he didn’t really contribute much. Tonight, his shots started to fall and he calmed down in all the other facets of his game. Let’s see how he reacts the next night his shot isn’t there. I would love to see the defense and rebounding.

Hopefully he is still regaining his athleticism from his ACL injury, and with Love in the lineup they start clicking. As a coach, I also wouldn’t try to teach those guys the triangle. They aren’t nearly there yet, with 2 new PGs running the show and no great outside shooters.

Going by the box score since I opted to watch UFC instead

but it looks like Howard got the bulk of the backup PF minutes again. Looks like he tore the house down since he scored 0 points in 21 minutes.

Also, like I’ve been saying, Blake once again started over Miller when Nate went away from the 3 guard lineup. (Yeah, I realize Dre has bad ankles, but Nate would have tabbed Blake even if Dre was 100% healthy)

Even in Seattle, it should be known that Nate McMillan's high-low zone offense used one backcourt player ...

who scored heavily on isos by handling their own playmaking duties and another backcourt player who spread the floor as an ancillary option. At first with Gary Payton, Emanuel Davis and Brent Barry played the role of a de facto 1. Once Ray Allen joined the team as a 2 who was more about jump shooting than driving to the hoop, a guy like Antonio Daniels — who was a rare dribble-drive 1 with the ability to limit turnovers like a methodical floor general — was the best fit. Luke Ridnour played a fair amount at the 1, too, but reports were that McMillan wanted Reece Gaines over him and only played the Blaine native extensive minutes ’cause of organizational pressure.

In Portland, it’s not shocking that a pure point guard like Andre Miller just doesn’t mesh with Brandon Roy. As much as Steve Blake’s all-around game is littered with flaws, his ability to spread the floor as a long-distance spot-up shooter and defer playmaking duties to Roy gives the main scoring option a high level of comfort.

I finally understand my team!

Instead of dusting off the wave for another small town go-round...

Do you think the fans would agree to start chanting “Jerryd! Jerryd! Jerryd!”.

It worked for LMA’s contract!

It would be nice to have a guy on this team with some goggles.

That brings good luck. I’m thinking back and—-yeah—-Buck Williams. Those were the days.

Or maybe we can just sign Karl Malone to a 10 day contract so he can gouge one of our guys in the eye at practice so that THEY will have to wear goggles.

Oden in goggles. You know you wanna see it!

But you know Blake would come up with a much better dance move

than the “Uncle Cliffy”. That thing was bad 80’s.

bummed

Could not hear or watch the game…very happy about Martell….but very bummed that Miller did not start….why won’t Nate give Miller a chance to start w/o Blake….is this all about Roy and only Roy?

by debra31098 on Nov 21, 2009 10:53 PM PST reply actions

Can't tell for sure, but I think it is equally Roy and McMillan's decision.

McMillan thinks too much about turn-overs and controlling the pace, Roy thinks too highly about having the ball in his hands.

yep

Nate from the columbian article:

“We came back after losing that game last night and did a much better job taking care of the ball.”

Limiting turnovers is goal #1. Cautious, playing slow, deliberate, not to lose. That’s Nate Mac ball. We just have to get used to it and hope it’s good enough to get out of the first round. This team won’t run and will always have to grind out it’s offense against good teams.

It’s not championship ball, so we just have to accept the realization that our championship window hasn’t opened yet.

OK: Which Blazer is the best dancer?

Don’t just say “Rudy” because he’s European either.

Because you know Juwan knows the cabbage patch and the running man.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
