Junk Drawer 11/21 Dun dun dun

FIrst Junk Drawer I've ever made, so take it easy on me.

This past week, I've slept at 2:30 AM and woke up around 6:50 AM everday. Sadly, I can't live on four hours of sleep, so I hibernated yesterday and slept at around 9:30 or whenever the Blazers ended the first half against the Warriors; as a result, I woke up at 5:45 AM, grabbed a jacket, got on facebook, and then checked Yahoo nba scores. WHAT THE ****. Blazers lose to the Warriors?! You've gotta be kidding me.

But I'll make it an off topic to talk about instead of mourning over the loss. I went shopping with some friends at Streets of Tanasbourne to get my mom a birthday present. I got her a red scarf from Macy's, but I realized that Christmas is already drawing near. I guess this is a winter holiday special! What are you guys going to give and receive?

My wife axed me to start building my X-mas list

Her family requires it be ready by Thanksgiving. I can’t think of anything I want because I’m spoiled and normally buy what I want when I want it.

I’m the same way,

I’m really starting to think Christmas should be for kids only.
I’d rather just get together for dinner and such anyway.

Romance me with that Roy rainbow shot which took flight from way beyond the arc and sailed so high that before it came back down to earth sealing the victory, it kissed the rafters and said "You're mine baby."

Yeah

Part of the problem is that I have to ask for a bunch of gifts worth about $20. It’s not like I can ask for an iPod or camera for Christmas. I’ll go to buy something in October or November and my wife will tell me to put it on my Christmas list.

by tominhawaii on Nov 21, 2009 7:53 AM PST up reply actions

I think the fun ones are when everybody brings one gift and you draw for them.

Done at work a lot, but we’ve done it with the whole family (lots of people).
That way if some people are low on money they can usually afford one gift.

Yeah

I love white elephant parties. I was once given a transsexual blow up doll as a going away gift from coworkers so I used it in a white elephant party about 5 years ago and it turns up every year at the party. I also gave away Madagascar hissing cockroaches to my wife’s family so they made a new rule the next year, “no live things.”

Last year I told my dad and grandmother I didn’t want to do the Christmas gift thing any more.

Mainly because my brothers and sister never do anything while I bring a trunk full of presents every year.
I was planning on surprising dad and grandma but got the flu right at Christmas. They didn’t call or anything (cause they didn’t know), so they probably think the worst.

I gots a real question

I just watched this video of a catchy tune, You Belong With Me by Taylor Swift, and it had me wondering. It sure seems like all it takes for a girl to be hot is to remove her glasses. They made fun of movies that do that in “Not Another Teen Movie.”

Can you think of any other instances where a woman became hot in a movie or video by taking off her glasses?

by tominhawaii on Nov 21, 2009 7:09 AM PST reply actions

hmmmm….still thinking.

This is formula for sure, so I know there’s a ton of them.
I think it would have been hot if she took off her glasses and played that clarinet.

You know what I'm missing, alley-oops from Andre to Rudy

I thought he would be at least as good as Sergio in that role, since he was with Iggy and Melo. It’s just 2 points, but it brings excitement and often they were quite high-percentage shots compared to taking some contested long heaves. Now Blake seems to throw better lobs than Andre. I’m quite disappointed in that, though on fast breaks he does throw better outlet passes.

I'm watching last night's game from the GS broadcast and it seems like Monta Ellis was in Roy's head

He had 6 steals last night and most were from Roy. They had 15 total. People aren’t giving Golden State enough credit for how hard they played last night.

by tominhawaii on Nov 21, 2009 12:06 PM PST reply actions

GS was enpowered a lot by the refs getting timid with the clutching and grabbing

Roy was plenty PO’d by Ellis grabbing him continuously. Plus the reffing of the bigs got weird after the 1st quarter as well. Not saying that the Blazers couldn’t or shouldn’t have overcome that but the most of Ellis’ great defense (on Roy) were the result of what should have been fouls. I really think the refs decided that because of GS being shorthanded, they decided to swallow their whistles

Wow that last sentance was pretty incomprehensible

Once GS started getting in foul trouble in the first, the refs realized that GS probably didn’t have enough players to call the game tight (or correctly in my opinion) and basically stopped calling fouls at all on GS…they smartly realized this and started clutching and grabbing and the Blazers never adjusted themselves

I can kind of see that

There was a lot of Blazers playing crappy. Webster just missed what should have been a layup with less than 2 minutes to go. Curry fouled out. Maggette had four fouls. The announcers had said 5 at one point. They also said the Blazers have lost 9 in a row there.

I’m pretty much not upset about the loss. The players are in a funk, it could be Nate’s fault or it could be that a lot of guys slumped at the same time. I think another part is that the team is used to being the underdog and and they’re not used to other teams in their old role. They probably need some play similar to the Roy shot against the Rockets to get everyone going.

by tominhawaii on Nov 21, 2009 12:24 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah ...don't get me wrong ...they Blazers played crappy (after the 1st)

all I’m saying is that it wasn’t in a vacuum…the way the refs started calling the game in the 2nd was a significant part of the deal too

Holy out of touch with pop culture, Batman

I finally watched both Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

They were very well done movies technically, the writing was good, and Ledger deserved the Oscar he posthumously won.

But no movie could live up to the amount of hype that was piled on The Dark Knight. I enjoyed the first couple hours, but the resolution did little for me.

Anyway, just figured we needed something new to talk about, even if it’s a dated topic.

I dunno, Dark Knight was good… but it was a victim of its own hype, to me. Heath Ledger was nice, but the movie last a bit too long and it wasn’t perfect. It was supposed to be perfect.

Ledger did great. If I didn't know it was him, I wouldn't have known it was him.

I thought the Joker storyline was engrossing for most of the movie, but I didn’t enjoy the Joker’s storyline resolution. I thought it fell flat. I enjoyed the origin of Two-Face, but his ending almost felt tacked-on.

I enjoy Christopher Nolan’s ability to do mood pieces (I really enjoy Memento), but I thought they made the ending a downer just because he felt it wasn’t allowed to end happily.

I actually have no problem with Bale as Batman. I thought he handled it pretty well. But it’s his supporting cast that really steal the movie.

This nails it, for me. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen the movie, but from my recollections, I was ready for the movie to be over. C’mon, it’s been a great movie, but it should just end now.

People were just so happy that the director resurrected the franchise, after it had become a laughingstock

I never got the talk about ‘movie of the decade’, but I think both are really good for what you wanted to get out of a Batman/superhero movie. I have issues with both though.

by Timmay! on Nov 21, 2009 12:12 PM PST up reply actions

Sure they will...to a degree

The thing to remember is that the Blazers have been better than GS for a couple of years now ……but we have been getting beat in Oakland pretty much continuously during that same time frame….I liken it the way we have the Lakers number every time they come to the RG. I think if they bounce back against Minny and get on another roll (4 or 5 game winning streak) …it will be easily forgotten until the next time we play them

There is no cohesion, no chemistry. It’s partly KP’s fault for bringing in a very proud guy and not making a way for him to get a bunch of minutes… but Nate has to get blame. He is playing Juwan Howard right now. Juwan needs to be on TNT.

we took them seriously in the first quarter. Then we played the brilliant lineup of Blake-Rudy-Martell-Juwan-Joel. That lineup just can’t score enough points to stay with Golden State.

it’s just so funny. Even if GS sucks that lineup CAN NOT score enough to keep pace with them. There is no conceivable way that four and a half players that need shots created for them can succeed in Nate’s scheme.

I think there's something to that

Blazers have a history of playing down to their competition. Part of me thinks the current problems stem from our easy schedule. We’ve been winning without playing well — positive reinforcement for craptacular play. I almost wish they’d started the season playing elite teams, even if it meant losses. I think it’d help them get the act together more quickly.

"Loser bowl" of Knicks vs Nets today. Marc Berman has collected the worst players at each position in Knicks history.

C Jerome James: Years played (2005-2009) Acquired: Signed as a $30 million free agent in 2005. Poster-boy of Isiah Thomas Era. The plus-sized center was paid $107,623 per point in four injury-wracked seasons and missed a New Year’s Day practice because of hangover.

F: Harthorne Wingo: Years played: (1973-1976). Acquired (Signed as free agent in 1973). Fans went crazy whenever his awkward jumper popped in because it was so rare. Averaged 4.8 points in four seasons.

F Jerrod Mustaf: Years played: (1990-1991) Acquired: Selected 17th in 1990 draft. First-round pick was colossal bust, traded after one season when he averaged 4.3 ppg. Out of the league by 1994.

SG: Luther "Tickey’’ Burden: Years played: (1976-1978). Selected 26th overall in 1975 draft. Great college scorer, the sharpshooter was one of worst defenders in Knick history, banished to the disabled list by coach Willis Reed for lazy defense after two games for rest of 1977-78 season. Allegedly robbed a bank in Hempstead, Long Island in 1980.

PG: Howard Eisley: (2001-2004). Acquired: Obtained from Dallas in three-team deal for Glen Rice. Representative of awful talent level of Scott Layden Era. Once a solid Utah backup, lost all his skill in New York.

Pet Food Drive details for tonight's game:

Link to the Columbian

The Portland Trail Blazers and Banfield, The Pet Hospital, are hosting their second annual pet food drive Saturday vs. the Minnesota Timberwolves. The first 500 fans to donate new, unopened pet food will receive a Blazers branded collapsible pet water dish and a discount to the Blazers’ fan shop.

The pet food drive supports Banfield, The Pet Hospital’s fourth annual Season of Suppers campaign, a national pet food drive that helps feed pets of homebound seniors. The Season of Suppers campaign began in 2005 after realizing that many homebound seniors were not getting the nutrition they needed because they were sharing their meals with their pets.

how does one go about writing a paper about a famous battle?

I am going to write about the Battle of Marathon for my term paper, but I’m not sure what to do with it. Do I focus on a specific part of the battle (for instance, the guy who ran the marathon to alert the other Greeks)? Or do I just provide the background of it and then recount what happened?

I am confused.

Repost since I just looked it up for a thread where people were arguing for how great Martell would be

At .289 three point percentage this year (and a career average of .368), I think we can officially retire the notion that he is a better outside shooter than (Travis .387/.361) and Nic (.369).

I would still like to see him return into a more traditional 2 guards, 2 forwards lineup. But I don’t think he’ll ever become a better scorer than what he was able to show when healthy 2 years ago.

I'm not sure where Martell's struggles are coming from at this point

I’m really disappointed, I expected more from him. But his shot is badly, badly off.

I do worry we’re distracted from the fact he only got out of his boot a short time before training camp, and is nowhere near game shape.

by Timmay! on Nov 21, 2009 1:12 PM PST up reply actions

it’s been a while since he jumped while shooting due to the boot… that could be part of it… he’ll never be a Roy level scorer, but he can still be a good #3 option

He misses shots no matter if they are contested or uncontested, and he does get high up on defense

I’m not saying he shouldn’t play, he is good. Just all the talk about how big his impact would be and how improved he would be was just that, talk. From some comments you would have thought we get a mix between Ray Allen, Nic Batum, and Kevin Durant back. He still has no handles to drive inside, and now he doesn’t even have his pretty stroke. I expect him to get back around 36%, but that’s not “amazing”.

lol four straight plays with major penalties for OSU. One of which was a personal foul when the OSU linebacker held on to the WSU quarterback running out of bounds so that he wouldn’t fall down and get the personal foul. No push, no trip, the QB didn’t fall. But he got the penalty for holding him as they went out of bounds.

i just read it.

“scrap” should be mentioned a lot cause this team doesn’t have it. i used to think all those loose balls bouncing to the other team was just “luck” but it happens too consistently for the Blazers. Like when Joel makes 3 consecutive blocks and the Blazers can’t come up with the ball.

i have no idea what will have to happen with the offense cause Iso’s aren’t the total answer. But the 1st and 2nd unit are definitely not balanced right now, which was sort of mentioned in that interview.

i don't think it's a Nate or a KP problem.

scrappiness is something that’s on the players to either do or not do. I guess you can make an argument that KP isn’t going after scrappy players. but scrappiness is definitely something you can’t coach.

If the glory can be killed, we are lost. --John Steinbeck

by DrivetheLane on Nov 21, 2009 4:07 PM PST up reply actions

Sorry, got distracted

If the complaint is that there’s no scrappiness team, either the coach doesn’t inspire it, doesn’t play the folks who bring it, or the GM didn’t get people who were talented enough to get on the court, plus bring scrappiness. Doesn’t need to be every player, just a working ratio.

by Timmay! on Nov 21, 2009 4:12 PM PST up reply actions

haha. i am.

i’m not totally convinced the coach can inspire scrapiness. some players have it some don’t. AI is a good example. You think a coach ever inspired him to do anything? Yet he’s one of the scrappier players in recent memory (or at least he was a few years ago when younger with less miles on him).

National identity crisis

McDonalds has run a campaign “100% Swiss” in Switzerland, assuring consumers that all produce – especially the beef – used for their burgers comes from Switzerland and not from some cheap sources. Now it turned out that the ad agency used a photo of a cow from Austria for the posters. Now those are the really big problems. I’m glad there are still concerned citizen and politicians with time for something like that.

I don't like what I'm hearing from Roy in the Os post game recap

http://blog.oregonlive.com/behindblazersbeat/2009/11/portland_minnesota.html

“I feel like we tried it (the three-guard lineup), and you could say it worked at times, but me sacrificing hurt the team, so it should get back to me playing full-out and getting some other guys in other areas to sacrifice a little bit,” Roy said.
“This team is going to go off my pulse,” Roy said. “Even if I’m smiling and trying to make it work, if I seem like I’m not totally comfortable, then Martell won’t be. And Rudy (Fernandez) will look like he’s in a funk. And L.A. (Aldridge) will look like he’s in a funk. They have been playing with me for a couple years and if I’m going well, they have more confidence.”

I like Brandon, but he sounds very petty in the Oregonian post-game recap. Yes you are an all-star. But, as I said when I saw this in the post-game thread, this feels like “Mean Girls” with Roy being the queen bee and Dre the new girl. And I really, truly, hope the reference to going “all-out” was just a poor choice of words – although you can’t really misinterpret his call for “other guys” to make sacrifices. Nobody’s perfect, but that is some “superstar” attitude for sure.

AK, I hate it when you're right sometimes

but that was my first thought as well (and the main reason I want Miller in the first 5 – he looks to feed the post). Brandon has earned the benefit of the doubt, but those comments were indicative of someone who likes being the top gun and doesn’t want to share that spot. Unfortunately, if this team is ever going to win it all, GO will need to be at the very least, option 2 on the offense.

this worries me the most
However, both McMillan and Roy acknowledged that the pairing of Roy and Miller on the same unit was not working, primarily because it was detracting from Roy’s game.

Nate, for one, should have realized that it was best for the team long term

if he stuck with Miller and let Roy and Andre iron out their issues over time.

Roy should have realized that while him and Blake work well in the regular season, there isn’t much success with that style of offense in the postseason.

I dunno I just don’t like the feeling of this and I am, for the first time in a long time, disappointed in B Roy

That "full-out" comment

stuck with me. Maybe he meant guarding SFs was draining him physically, but it definitely sounded like he was coasting because he wasn’t feeling the direction things were going. Also, I do not like the implication that to be a successful part of the lineup, deference to Roy is essential – for the “comfort” of the other guys. I had a coach who told us that success can be even harder to deal with than failure. Maybe Brandon needs to realize what got him to where is today is not the attitude reflected in those quotes.

this part was weird too
Both want, and both need, the ball. When they played together, it was often a power struggle. Or as McMillan described it, it was as if two fists were colliding.

Miller, who had four points and four assists in 20 minutes Saturday, staunchly shot down any notion that he and Roy didn’t work well together on offense.

“We went 7-2,” Miller said. “So I don’t think that’s a problem. And over half of the games were on the road. I’m not going to look at it that way. We won games.”

I hope a beat reporter gets down to the bottom of this…

One of the more respected (to me) voices of the NBA blogosphere had this to say:

Can you imagine the 2008-2009 Portland offense with the 2009-2010 Portland defense? I have, often, and mostly in terrible, terrible nightmares. -AttheHive

It got me to thinking… if we can integrate Oden into the Royfense™, maybe it can work after all. We were first in offense last year. While a bit of that was fool’s gold, Oden becoming an offensive force changes a lot and makes us difficult to defend.

If Oden changes us defensively and we are top 5 on that end, while being a good rebounding team… that isn’t the worst thing in the world.

In the end, I think the entire Roy-Miller synergy debate is wasted and we should be discussing Roy-Oden as the key to ultimate success.

by Cablinasian on Nov 22, 2009 12:34 AM PST reply actions

It really is impossible to say, and there isn't much to do but wait and see

I think Oden can be integrated just fine into the “Royfense”, we saw that a bit tonight with Roy dumping it off to Greg for a couple dunks. Considering they do the same thing for LMA, early in games especially, I don’t see why Portland can’t integrate some Oden post ups into that offense.

I am fairly concerned though.

by cloudydays on Nov 22, 2009 12:38 AM PST up reply actions

coming into this year, we were worried about two things.

(1) Oden.
(2) Defense.

Oden has been 20 PER good and the defense has been fantastic, though a bit fortuitous. Oden is a dominant defensive presence affecting that end.

We can always go back to last year’s offense, with similar to better efficiency due to an improved Oden. All that needs to be done is make the players actually get Oden the ball. As much as I have ragged on Steve, he’s been more conscious of it in recent weeks. Roy showed flashes tonight.

If we integrate Oden into the Royfense, then I think it becomes pretty hard to stop. The problem last year was that Roy was the only effective option creating offense. If Oden creates offense as he has been, we are instantly golden. How many teams have great defenders at the 2, 4, and 5?

Let’s give this the year and into the playoffs to see how it works.

I will say that I have serious long-term doubts about Nate as the coach; I’m simply trying to look at this objectively and appreciate that our offense last year was good and just needed another prong.

i cry for nic

by Cablinasian on Nov 22, 2009 12:44 AM PST up reply actions

I think I'm concerned with Roy's attitude more than anything else

I have never ever even let the thought of him being “selfish” cross my mind, but his comments tonight made me stop and wonder. Maybe it’s just a “phase” that he will go through as a player and eventually become better for it, or maybe he was just misquoted by Quick. But I am a little concerned about Roy right now.

failure is the ultimate breeding ground for change. Roy only scored 18 points in the Royfense tonight. If he is using his amazing powers of dribble driving creation to get the offense open shots, then awesome. The problem is a team like Houston just letting him score and guarding everyone else. That becomes impossible if Greg rucks in the post.

I'm with Cloudy on this (we had a good discussion - with quotes - above)

Brandon will need to get comfortable with sharing the front seat of the offense with GO if this team wants to win big. Roy will still be the handler/facilitator in the clutch (much like Jordan, Kobe, Wade, etc. – easier for a guard to get the ball and create a shot) but his post-game interview sounded very prima donna tonight. hypothetically speaking, let’s say we get that weak San Antonio team last year instead of Houston and we win in 5 or 6 games.

Then we make it to the 2nd round and lose to Denver or LAL in 5 or 6 games. Do we think the Royfense isn’t successful in the playoffs then?

That's a very fair, and probably correct, point

but Houston was the worst possible matchup for us in the playoffs last year. I just don’t know if we even have this conversation about Portland needing to go a different direction than the “Royfense” because it doesn’t work in the playoffs. At least not yet.

Who knows, maybe Portland changes because of what happened last year and that Houston matchup ends up being the best thing for Portland

I think the issue was not the level of Houston’s defense but the how of Houston’s defense. They were a perfectly engineered antidote.

If Greg becomes a dominant post presence (the power move really is unstoppable once the refs respect him), we are exponentially more difficult to guard. I think that, combined with Roy’s perimeter brilliance, will beat any defense as long as Roy and Oden develop chemistry.

Charles was good last week

If he is still the starter, I go with him…

RUDY > MJ

Loved a couple of those feeds from Blake to Oden tonight,

as well as some nice feeds to Joel (not sure who was doing the feed on those).
This is part of what we’re missing on offense. Just feeding the ball down low to somebody is not going to get it done. It’s when we move the ball so that when you do feed it down low the defense is a little out of position. This is one of the things Rudy is good at doing.

If you go back to some of our good games in the 2nd half of last season we had much better ball movement.

Same can be said for the long jump shot or 3-pointer. Those aren’t necessarily bad shots as long as you have been moving the ball so the guy has time for a decent shot. Martell proved this tonight. If you can hit that shot, the defense has to spread and can’t cheat.

Romance me with that Roy rainbow shot which took flight from way beyond the arc and sailed so high that before it came back down to earth sealing the victory, it kissed the rafters and said "You're mine baby."

Noah, 2nd in the league in total rebound %, 20.5

Dwight Howard 1st, Oden 3rd.

Oden was first before tonight I think. the problem is that teams are sending swarms to box him out, which hurts his individual numbers. Our team numbers are great with him in, though.

Joel would be 1st if he had enough minutes to qualify

We should do that podcast this week, with the new adj. plus minus numbers at our disposal.

I love bbvalue, great site. I think the weekly update comes out tomorrow.

I’m game for it sometime. A little harder to work around with the holiday, but we’ll coordinate with prez.

for sure, Noah had to climb the ladder with a night like that.

10.4 points, 8.1 rebounds in 24.2 minutes.

with no improvement 30 (29.87)minutes a game puts him at a double double
12.8 points and 10 rebounds

6 more minutes, that’s all I ask.

The way they were delivering him the ball tonight his rebounds will go down because he has the best shooting % at .623
What was Blake (and company) thinking, we need to stop feeding him the ball, and now.

what am I missing, bbref has Martell with .923 FT%

http://www.basketball-reference.com/leagues/NBA_2010_leaders.html

ESPN has Blake with .938%, and Martell with .818

Blakes not even listed at BBref – i think something is messed up

While this isn't a new clip, the following segment from the Rachel Ray show is amusing in its suggestive ...

humor and somewhat timely with Thanksgiving on the horizon.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
