junkdrawer in case of SO armageddon
So is it just me or is any game with the Warriors, pretty much the ugliest game of the year? For some reason we just cannot get over on them, and it drives me crazy to watch. Dirty, ugly basketball, which the warriors excel at and we don't. So whatever, they get calls every time, we get favorable calls overturned, and the fury of the fan base gets brought up to a frenzy as our team gets reduced to a bunch of whining, uncoordinated, d-leaguers.
So it makes me wonder, shouldn't we be considering this a rivalry? Even though G-state is a streaky team that won't make the playoffs, they sure have our number. Feel free to talk about it, or not talk about it. Either way, I understand and yes, you are right.

I can see that, but I hate any team when they are playing the blazers.
before and after is a different story, I’m willing to acknowledge their right to exist. But when we’re sharing the floor with them, there are few teams I find as annoying as the warriors.
We lose in Oakland, like the Lakers lose in Portland.

It always seems to start there though. I'm not putting this all on the ref's by a mile.
But Golden State really gets away with manipulating the refs down in Oakland. It’s always the same, they’re slamming our guys and we get called for ticky tack stuff. Then it jumps the shark.
I would give it all up for a billion dollars

i suppose.
but the Blazers just didn’t force the issue. at all. the first quarter was great. but once Moore went out and then LMA got the second foul and they went small with Webster, that was the beginning of the end. Blazers didn’t stay aggressive getting the ball inside. All the wing players turned the ball over. no one shot well after the 1st. no one played defense after the 1st except Joel. No effort. No hustle. just a pathetic game all the way around.

Yeah i was really disappointed in nate's little "rule"
Lastnight. I don’t think it’s necessarily aiding greg’s development any more than letting him play with fouls, or even him fouling out. I definitely think it’s disrupting both his and the teams offensive game.
I’d be curious to see, for how much foul trouble Greg gets into, how many games he’s actually fouled out of. I know it’s probably more due to Nate pulling him whenever he makes a mistake, but what is the point of keeping a game altering force, on both ends of the floor, on the bench just to keep him from fouling out?
I would give it all up for a billion dollars
by Tyler Durrden on Nov 21, 2009 7:42 AM PST via mobile up reply actions
He wouldn't let him foul out in the first half
Two fouls is only 1/3 of the way to fouling out. My point is I wish the decision was situational rather than a clearly defined rule. Do other teams know that oden is only allowed 1 foul per quarter? Because if they do that is a blatant, exploitable weakness.

Two game questions
Asking here since I’m running out of energy for the gameday threads:
1. Ben specifically said “Timeouts were spent ignoring their coach’s instructions”… was this seen on camera at some point? It may have been seen on the Blazers feed but I don’t remember it on the Warriors feed that I saw.
2. Joe Freeman says Nate got a T, but ESPN’s recap says only Andre and Roy got T’s. I missed the last two minutes so I might have missed a Nate T. Which one is correct?
Thanks guys.

Last year against GS Oden picked up 2 quick fouls
and Nate put him back in early in the 2nd Q and Oden promptly picked up another one.

I didn't mind Nate taking Oden out after getting 2 in 5 seconds
I would have liked to seen him put Oden and Aldridge back in later in the quarter to stop the GS run. Nate was far too worried about foul trouble and it’s entirely possible that it lost us the game.

Why in the world are
so many people enamored with Van Gundy? He’s a commentator for a reason. It’s because nobody wanted him as a coach!

By the way, you have a nice, furry voice.
"Aneurysm".
When Outlaw wins a game on a last-second shot, it’s called an "annthefaneurysm". QualityPie
How many times have I explained this to deaf ears?
1. Jeff Van Gundy has an offense that relies heavily on a variety of pick-and-roll plays — which is a NBA staple — as well as effectively uses the center on offense.
2. Van Gundy gets a maximum effort out of his players on defense,as well as employs a scheme that doesn’t rely on a bunch of absurd switches off of screens that leaves his guys out of position.
Dear Paul Allen:

We had a lineup of Blake-Rudy-Webster-Howard-Przybilla out there. I mean really.
I honestly thought I missed an injury to Aldridge
I was getting worried about the rest of the season, clearly if we aren’t bringing Aldridge back in he must have gone down.
It’s not like Aldridge fouls at the rate Oden does. As long as Nate is wed to this 2 fouls and done for the half nonsense teams will keep attacking our bigs like there is no tomorrow.
You won.
by Roybot on Nov 11, 2009 1:41 AM PST
It bugged me so much
Yeah, LMA has fouled out against the Dubs before and had probs, BUT LET IT BE A PROB FIRST.
With LMA, anyways. Oden, I get.
Oden finished with 24 minutes and 4 fouls. That should NEVER EVER HAPPEN.
I am quickly losing patience with Nate. Very quickly.
Look at it this way
Oden comes back in the 2nd quarter, picks up foul 3. Goes to the bench.
Starts the 2nd half, quickly picks up foul 4. Goes to the bench.
Ya sit him for the half, he is then free to pick up 2 or 3 dumb fouls which gravitate towards him.
Since you absolutely cannot predict when he is going to get bunches of fouls, what can you do? Until Oden fixes it there is no good solution, and with THIS solution you at least ensure yourself a better shot at lengthy chunks of playing time and not the stop and go of last season.
You will not convince me on this.
If Oden plays fewer than 30 minutes and doesn’t foul out, then Nate did a horrible job of managing his minutes that game.
This game was particularly bad. Just a horrible job by Nate. One of the worst coached games I can remember.
Think about it though
You give Oden 3 fouls before the half, he will get the 4th in the 3rd quarter, likely early on in the 3rd. Then what?
Ok, you play him till #5. 3rd quarter is hopefully over by then. He plays 12 minutes, hopefully, with 5 fouls and doesn’t pick up #6 before it is crunch time. Not likely.
Then you foul out your best center. And don’t have him for crunch time. AND he has no way to establish any sort of a rhythm, if you do pull him when he gets #4 or #5.
If you can predict when Oden will pick up #4 and #5
Which he is almost assured of picking up, then you can leave him in to maybe get #3.
I believe in Oden much more than most and want to see him out there more than most
But until you can trust he won’t get 5 fouls in 15 minutes if not managed, you have to manage him so you have him when it is crunch time.
Saying “well he only played 24 minutes but only had 4 fouls” doesn’t mean as much as it sounds.
I don't care if he fouls out in the 3rd quarter. I really don't.
I want to maximize his minutes. Points count the same whenever they are scored.
You get Joel in too early, he'll get foul problems also
Then you’re looking at LMA and Juwan in crunch time or a foul troubled Joel.
That's okay.
I’m telling you, there is no good solution and no sane coach in the world will let his star big man foul out in the 3rd quarter.
Or get 5 fouls. Not when he gets fouls so easily as it is, in limited minutes.
The only solution is Oden not fouling so much. Done and done.
Until then, I like what gives him the best chance at getting a rhythm AND being there late in the 4th when it matters. There are several runs a game by each team of course, and if Oden helps give us a 10 point lead in the 3rd and then runs into BAD foul trouble, the points are not worth the same.
Rather, the LEAD is not worth the same. Too much time left, too easy to surmount, for almost any team.
While he’s averaging 6 fouls per 36 there is NO GOOD SOLUTION and no coach will ever prevent himself from being able to use one of his best players, and I think it is for a good reason— you don’t want your backups in when you need a bucket or need a stop.
if he's averaging 6 fouls/36, he should be able to play 30+ minutes the majority of the time
Anything else is poor coaching.
Again
You are thinking there are exact moments when he picks up foul 3, foul 4, foul 5, etc. He averages that many but a clock doesn’t tick down where he is awarded that foul.
He averages 6 per 36 because he gets 5 in 20 minutes. He isn’t likely to not get another foul in 10 more minutes of run.
You have to think of it in actual practice, and not just as a number.
I'd rather give him 4 to play with in the 2nd half
And 2 in the first, over 4 in the first half and 2 in the second half.
He is going to get those fouls, it’s just a matter of when, not if. When he is in he gets called for fouls.
If you say “let him play” in the first half, when do you sit him? Foul 4? 3? I am not being snarky I am just wondering how you see it playing out with that policy.
I think it's a case of hindsight is 20/20
In games where he ends up only with 4, we can say OH DAMMIT he coulda’ played more.
Beforehand, with Oden, there is no way to know that.
He's entering what I said into the computer
It ain’t like I “like” sitting Oden with 2 fouls, I hate that we have to manage him so much because of the combo of dumb fouls, and often times flat out horrible reffing.
Where’s the Jordan Rules when ya need it?
I can kind of see both your points here.
I think early in the season maybe you take a chance and let him try to handle the fouls. See if he can learn to play without fouling. He carried 5 fouls for a long time in a game last year (or was that this year, my memory fails me). Plus you put some pressure on the refs to not call those ticky tack fouls.
So give him 3 or 4 games, just to see how it affects his game.
Romance me with that Roy rainbow shot which took flight from way beyond the arc and sailed so high that before it came back down to earth sealing the victory, it kissed the rafters and said "You're mine baby."
how about that call when he face hit Ellis’ knee? The GSW broadcasters were even offended for him.
i cry for nic
That sort of stuff makes me so angry
Totally removes one of our best players for no reason. It is ridiculous.
This is a game where, to me
It seemed like after we fed Oden over and over (to great success), it felt like the guards went “it’s my turn now”, especially Roy. And I ain’t one to call out Roy like that.
Roy should be smarter and stick with what works… especially when he couldn’t shake his defender with his sloppy ballhandling and low energy tonight.
In the end, for me, this comes back to Nate.
What he did in the 2nd quarter completely allowed momentum to change.
I agree
It was ridiculous to sit LMA, our only other post scorer, against the Warriors, when he never has foul problems.
I can't think of a reason for it
Yeah, Flopgette got him in trouble last time, but that was last time and his fouls weren’t offensive fouls from flops.
boy, it felt like you just keep feeding oden this game
every time he went to work it was gold
RUDY > MJ
and a bonus application here
is if Nate shows he’s not going to immediately pull Oden when he gets in foul trouble then opponents will be less likely to attack him

agreed.
The “2 fouls and out rule” is a joke. Especially when he uses it for LA also.
The lineup we had out there late in the 1st half was criminal.
But inside points and defense in the last 5 minutes of the 4th quarter matter more.
Whatever points and defense Oden gets us before fouling out can be overcome by the enemy when Oden is out.
Yay-- Oden didn't pick up 4 horrible fouls in the 2nd half
The only thing one can predict is that he’ll get fouls, so of course you want them later.
If he has 4 fouls in the 3rd quarter, you have to sit him
If you want him for crunch time, which I do.
No. You need to maximize his minutes. Points scored in the 3rd quarter count also.
By using this strategy, Nate likely cost the team 6 minutes of Oden. That’s inexcusable.

We haven't played one game like we are capable of yet
Until then there will be problems, and until tonight we’ve beat the teams we should beat.
Like we all worried about, the 3 guard lineup got credit for the win streak… which was silly. It made it become the set rotation for now. ugh.
Doesn't it start to be a concern that after 14 games we still haven't looked good against anyone other than Minnesota?
ya know what....
We used to be 0-0, and I was dieing for the season to start. Now we are 9-5, damn time, I HATE TIME….
RUDY > MJ
Of course it is concerning.
It IS still November and we ARE winning who we should win against. We just ain’t doing it in any sustainable form yet.
We definitely got the players and pieces to figure out that sustainable way, and for now it begins with including Oden more, Oden managing his fouls better, and Roy returning to 90% of last year’s Roy.
this team has all kinds of problems right now.
Are Blake and Miller off to slow starts or are they done as good players? Is Webster done as a good player? Is Roy off to a slow start or is this going to be a down year? Is Oden ever going to stop fouling? Is Nate going to realize that Bayless needs minutes and Howard should never ever play again?
Still, other teams pray to have our problems.
Blake has too big of a role, that’s a big problem, but I am sure his shooting will return to normal. That’s all he does.
Miller, I dunno. Everyone says he is a slow starter, that’s fine, but the wishy washiness of the 3 guard lineup has likely hurt him. And figuring out Roy.
Howard should never play for that long ever again. Ugh.
We came out ahead today Jake
I got my LPBB working during the 4th quarter, after I had already paid for the KGW stream which is super crappy, and I viewed 3 apartments that I would like to move into today.
I still can't believe Nellie didn't play the D-League dude the whole first half
and then started him the 2nd half, and he immediately canned a jumper over Oden. Ugh.
Jake will have no problem finding mates on his own
The least BRP coulda’ done is taken care of Jake himself, though.
And for the record
I don’t think we even looked good against Minnysota. We shoulda’ won those by 40.
We have not looked good in any game I have watched, and I only missed the 2nd Houston game.
What I don't get is that a lot of the same people that think this is a future title team/dynasty
are the same people who are ok with being 9-5, with zero impressive wins (the best being a solid win @ OKC).

He probably didn’t know who Spike Lee was, but tried to fake it anyway.

Reggie Miller is an idiot who got his job via nepotism, end of story.
That’s life, though.

He was hired because, like Barkley, he was known as a funny player
He isn’t, much to our collective chagrin.
If you mean he was hired because of his sister, that’s silly.
She's worked at TNT, though.

G-Love's 'Cuse Orange beat UNC. Impressive.
Cornell’s long home winning streak ended against Seton Hall :(
brp's wife made a "get well paul allen" sign. It was really nice. We held it up a lot. Blazer Broadcasting fail.
I wrote some funny stuff of the back of the sign while brp was driving to the game, like “Charts>Quick” and “BlazersEdge>GSOM, Canis Hoopus, C-blog”

Go here and on the 20th one, go to the 15 minute mark. It’s Timbo, I tell ya. Timbo likes the punk too.
ok goodnight
I am sick of this team and everything about them. I refuse to watch any of their games for at least 15 hours and 40 minutes. COLD TURKEY.
That's my plan with alcohol, except for the 15 hours part. :)
Samuel Adams makes an interesting winter pack, for what it’s worth.

What if I told you that John King was my dad and Dana Bash was my stepmom?
If I did, that’d be a lie.
King is an awesome surname, though.

I love Jennings.
I think he was supposed to play at Arizona with Bayless, but both of them bailed. That would have been interesting.

Well mag you got your wish in a way.
Oden went straight to the front of the rim twice in the 1st quarter and was unstoppable. In fact I think the only time they stopped him down low was on the one he got severely hacked with a no call. I might need to change my mind about not giving Oden more touches, as long as he’s low enough. He’s an enforcer down there.

Some kid just posted a new Junk Drawer
I gonna go hang out there because he only has 7 posts and he seems like he put some work into it.
There was somebody a few months back that tried several times to get his own junk going, is it him?

We can call GS a bad team,
but they lost to Houston by 1, creamed the T-Wolves by 41, played both Boston and Cleveland tough – that was a one point game near the end.
I think their free wheeling style gives some teams trouble, and more so for us because we’re still thinking way too much on defense. Plus we’re also having trouble on offense when teams pressure the ball, and that doesn’t matter how bad the team is that is applying the pressuring. Detroit almost came back on us just from putting good pressure on the ball.

I am already questioning returning to Portland this afternoon to opt for climbing Camel back and leaping off of it.

Let’s see, GS had 32 points off turnovers, we had 10.
They had 36 fast break, we had 9
Quickness is hurting us. This might have been a good game to get Bayless some significant minutes.
