Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

What happened to Przybilla's Offense?

Yes, Joel had effective offense last year!  Don't you remember Blake's and Roy's drive and dish plays?  Joel had so many easy buckets. Now they are not bringing him into the offense, and it make's Roy's job harder with the double team.  Can anyone explain it?  We can also involve Oden in these kinds of drive and dish too.  there was one that Blake tried against OKC but Oden's hands were not quick enough.  Maybe they need to do it more so he can anticiipate it better.  Comments?

Running more offense through the post

Is always a good idea. What offensive rhythym we had last night came when the fed the post early. Oden is good, they need to use him more.

That said, this blazers team operated heavily on the perimeter last season, only penetrating off the dribble. A good inside out game opens more lanes as defenders collapse on the ball. That means more open shots and clear driving lanes for the peremeter players.

Hahaha

He’s a butterfingers. And has no instinct to finish. And is a lower percentage (under 75%) FT shooter to boot. Sure, he can grab the board. But a power dribble and a putback? I don’t think so.

He's missing both pinkies

he only has 8 fingers and so he drops a lot of easy passes.
don’t say anything because he’s sensitive about it.

I believe he chewed them off himself in a fit of fury after being called for a blocking foul when he was clearly taking a charge.

My team went to the playoffs in my first year.

Joel had a great season last year

but he’s never been an offensive juggernaut. It could be a decline in terms of FG%, but he’s still pounding the boards, which is critical since none of our 4 men are bangers in the paint.

He's always been a bit of a butterfingers...

In fact he has the lowest possible rating for “hands” on NBA 2k10

Having said that…both him and Greg struggling catching passes from drive and dishes is influenced by the fact that the ball is seldom thrown their way even if they are open for a dump-off in the lane. After a while you just start to get used to the ball not being thrown your way in those situations so you are looking more to rebound or jo0ckey for position instead of being ready to catch a pass.

B-roy is our primary guy in those situations but NEVER seems to be comfortable dumping it off to Oden for some reason. On the rare occasion Blake gets in the lane he is so passive that he often misses the opportunity to make the pass. Miller has not gelled yet either so he is looking more to score in those situations (and he usually doesn’t get collapsed on as much as Roy).

There have been numerous times in every game this year that the ball should have been dumped off for easy dunks but it hasn’t been.

Bingo!

For Joel to handle a pass in a real game, first he has to get over his shock that someone actually passed him the ball. How many times have we seen a “Pick and Roll” where he sets a great pick, then heads for the basket alone, totally ignored by all 9 other players, big paw waving futilely in the air. How many times of doing that would it take for you to forget why you are waving your hand in the air? And his foul shooting is pretty good for a big guy.

quite simply, his sky high TS% in the early part of last year was unsustainable

He’s back to being typical Joel. Still a good rebounder and solid defender.

yup

Joel’s performance early last year was an aberration, and one of the reasons the blazers overachieved last season…

The pass to Oden against OKC

was a terrible pass when Blake was out of control. Oden was not looking for a pass and I think Blake hit him in the should with the “pass.”

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
