Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Oden is 4th in the NBA in FG%, shooting at a 60% clip. However, he is only getting 6.8 shots per game, ranking him 124th. When factoring in his limited amount of touches, one can see why he is only getting 1.8 free throws per game, which ranks 179th, while he is downing them at a respectable 75%. Also, his Points Per Shot is a solid 1.39, ranking him 21st. GET HIM THE BALL!!

I actually like Nate taking him out after 2 fouls for now

He has played better in the second half of each game where that had to happen, amazingly better. How many times did we see Oden get two fouls, then come back in the 2nd qtr and pick up a 3rd foul in less than 2 mins last year? That really demorlizes not only us as fans, but Greg himself. Until Greg learns to stay out of foul trouble I am all for Nate keeping his current strategy.

The idea is putting pressure on the refs

They might call something rediculous for the first two fouls but they have to find something respectable for the third. Hopefully they might give him respect for the rest of the game as well.

Just once I want to see him left in completely and foul out completely in the first quarter. That would turn some heads.

Portland could coast along with their superior talent and stay right with us. Now that Portland woke up, the hammer cometh down.

Last year and this year

I’ve seen no evidence that makes it seem like the refs won’t call that 3rd foul as quickly as the first two.

I like him playing the 2nd half with 4 fouls, and really getting the rhythm we all want him to get.

The main thing is though, there is no perfect solution… except Oden not getting in foul trouble. Until then we gotta do things like sitting him after 2 fouls for the half.

I agree

It’s not about now, it’s about learning for later in the season, the playoffs, and the rest of his career. And it lets Greg actually play in the second half, because he never has foul trouble at the start of the second half.

This 2 foul rule will probably be relaxed for the stretch run and the playoffs. It is a good interim approach to make sure Greg is concentrating right from the start. As a long term rule, it would be bad, but for now, I think it is a good idea.

I wish we would get him 15+ shots a game

I wouldn’t even mind losing a few games to help Oden become a major part of our offense.

I'm all for it

I just wish we’d get him shots in a more creative way. Oden has never been a back to the basket force, but he’s always been good at receiving the ball on the move (P&R for example, instead of always running the P&P with Aldridge) and finishing with thunderous dunks.

He's been cutting like he should do

But we ain’t hitting him.

Even though he has had problems getting stripped, that isn’t a problem with his hands but a problem of fundamentals. His hands are very good and he can catch passes on the move very easily. He cuts, HIT HIM. Put him in position where all he has to do is finish.

I like feeding him in the post, but we don’t need to do it a ton more— but we need to recognize when he is wide open and give him the damn ball for the finish.

Just watching the silly Lakers and how they incorporate Bynum… most of his buckets come off of assists. Oden can do the same thing, but our guards aren’t doing nearly a good enough job of taking advantage of such a monster inside.

Agreed.

Nate doesn’t trust Greg yet, which is understandable, but that trust needs to come quickly if this team wants to compete in the playoffs this year. Greg is a game changer, everyone can see that, he is just not getting the opportunity right now. He is hitting 60% of his shots, yet taking less than 10 a game which is crazy, considering even in his undeveloped offensive state he is hitting that percentage. Yes he can turn it over when given the ball on the block, but this team should be willing to live with those type of growing pains.

Both Greg and the team can help this process though, his teammates can hit him when he rolls to the hoop, (sometimes it feels like this team can only run the pick and pop) and to be fair they are doing it more this year than last, but they can still look for it everytime, because it is open almost every time. Second Greg can establish better postion down low, he is pretty good at it, but sometimes he allows himself to be pushed out an extra 2 to 3 feet. When this happens and he gets the ball it is almost always a missed shot. Greg needs to pass these touches back out and repost for better position if he wants the ball back to score.

One play in particular I would love to see run is the fake back screen lob play. We see Greg set back screens everygame for LMA, basically Greg is on one block while LMA is on the other, Greg will run through the paint setting a screen on LMA’s defender which allows LMA to cross the paint and set up deep post postion while ready to recieve the entry pass from the guard. Many many times we see these type of screens defended very sloppy by the opponent, Greg’s man will try and bump LMA on his way through the key, and LMA’s man will hurry to get around Greg and catch up to LMA. What everyone seems to forget is Greg, by the very nature of the back screen Greg is put into position right at the rim, with his defenders back turned, all that is needed is a on target lob to Greg at the rim for a quick and easy score. I have seen the Blazers do this once, with the result being a LMA uncontested Dunk, but for Greg it is open almost everytime he sets a back screen.

Get Greg involved in the offense and he will become an even bigger force on defense. And he may just have enough energy to not pick up some dumb fouls. Is it any coincidence that Greg stayed completely out of foul trouble on the road against Minny when he was very involved in the offense from the beginning of the game?

just playing devil's advocate here

but isn’t his turnover rate also really really high? That could be the reason the blazers dont feed him the ball more. Remember a turnover is way worse than a missed shot.

Of course that said, i agree with you that i’d like to see him with the ball more, for the reasons listed above and because i think a lot of his turnovers are silly mistakes he’ll stop making once he gets a little better. And he needs the ball to get better.

by moflow on Nov 19, 2009 3:39 PM PST reply actions

His turnover percentage is around 20, up 3 percent. That’s not great, but e.g. Rudy is worse. So is Joel at 25.

Rudy and Dre are getting the ball inside to Joel,

and it is confusing him greatly. Joel is waiting to rebound a jump shot, and suddenly the ball is coming at him waist high. Hopefully, Joel’s hands will get better as the season progresses, but I’m not really counting on it.

i'm sorry

but no way. oden’s turnovers are terrible. much, much worse than rudy’s.

oden’s hands ratings is 4.1. rudy’s is 8.8. when rudy turns the ball over, it’s on a pass. when oden turns the ball over, it’s because he’s tripping over his own feet or a point guard ripped it from his hands—essentially he’s trying to put a shot up and failed.

oden only has 6.8 shots per game because he blows 5 other opportunities per night.

by strong on Nov 19, 2009 4:54 PM PST up reply actions

Oden's are terrible because they are clumsy and look awful on TV.

Rudy’s turnovers are often beautiful, like when he tries to thread the needle between 4 defenders but doesn’t quite make it. You’ve got to give him points for effort. Unfortunately, both are turnovers. Plus teams are starting to realize when Rudy heads to the rim, he going to pass the ball if the lane is clogged. He’s starting to get predictable and causing turnovers on these passes. It’s hard to blame Rudy, though. He’s 6’6" and weighs 175 pounds. Does he eat? You just can’t attack the rim with that build.

by Sean M on Nov 19, 2009 5:07 PM PST up reply actions

Oden rarely turns it over on the pass

And aside from his 7 turnover game to start the year, his turnover “problems” are extremely normal for any center in the NBA.

And the 7 turnover game was filled with moving screens, 3 second calls, not 7 real turnovers.

Oden isn’t turning it over an exceptional amount for a 21 year old. The only thing he is doing awful is his foul rate.

I think the Blazers do get him the ball and he would get more shots if his fouls went down

The offensive foul 6 seconds into the game against Detroit is a prime example of this problem.

You won.

When a guy is shooting 60 percent from the floor

and 75 percent from the foul line you go to him a lot unless those percentages drop considerably. And if the other team is fouling him a lot, you go to him even more.

As far as turnovers go, those are a share responsibility; the pass as well as the set up have a lot to do with whether Greg ends up with a turnover or not. We need to get better at feeding the post since we have a weapon like him!

The best players only try to, "do it all," themselves when it is a playoff necessity or, on occasion, to put on a show. There is no need to belabor the point!

by KINGofMACct on Nov 19, 2009 6:52 PM PST reply actions

I would be all for him getting tons more of the "Paul to Chandler" touches

Not the bounce pass into the post.

If he’s moving without the ball he is devastating.
If he’s waiting for it stationary he is duddly.
