A Game for Jerryd
I have been very optimistic about the prospects of Jerryd Bayless as a combo guard who could serve as our PG of the future.
I have been very cautious about playing Jerryd a lot right now, because he hasn't really looked at ease in the PG role.
I'm ready to put all of those aside for the moment and suggest that this next game, against the Warriors, is a great game for Bayless, just as he is, to play some significant minutes. Why, you ask? Follow my logic and tell me if it makes sense to you.
THE OPPONENT
- The Warriors are desperately short-handed. Raja Bell, who just came to them from Charlotte, was their eighth "healthy" player who dressed at Boston. Today, he had surgery (likely season ending) on his wrist. Azubuike is out for the season. Brandan Wright is out until February (and besides, he doesn't even know how to spell hs first name). Turiaf and Devean George are out until at least late this month. CJ Watson has swine flu. Biedrins is out until next week. They only have seven healthy players.
- Despite that, they play at a high pace and score a lot.
- They just played a back to back in Cleveland and Boston, and have one day off to travel back across the country before playing us. They should be tired.
OUR NEED
- Travis is out, and we need offense off the bench.
- Everyone is tired after a lot of travel, and we play a back to back in Portland the next night (admittedly against Minnesota, but you still don't want to be exhausted).
- The Warriors' up and down style will be wearing if our key players have a lot of minutes.
WHY JERRYD IS A GOOD ANSWER
- He is young, and hasn't been playing a lot, so fatigue shouldn't be an issue.
- Whatever else one might think of him, he knows how to take it to the hole, score, and draw fouls. That offense will matter against Golden State, you simply can't completely shut them down.
- Jerryd draws fouls. Let me just reiterate that. Jerryd draws fouls. If there is a team that cannot afford foul trouble, it is the team that is already short-handed. Well, that's not exactly right. If there is a team that can't afford foul trouble, it is the team that is already short-handed AND tired. Check.
- We probably don't need him the next night like we do other players.
- Jerryd draws fouls.
- Biedrins is out, and there is no real shotblocker who could shut him down at the hoop. They are starting Mikki Moore at center. Hopefully Greg doesn't break him in two, because they have enough injuries. Mikki is 34 years old. Jerryd can be at the hoop before Mikki makes it over half court on many possessions. Is Monta going to defend Jerryd to keep that from happening?
- Jerryd draws fouls.
- Monta Ellis wants out, and faced with Jerryd's intense (and perhaps annoying) defense, he may just get mentally focused on other things besides the game.
- It has occurred to me that Jerryd draws fouls, and it might be a good idea to always have guys out there who can and will drive the lane and draw fouls.
- There's a decent chance that Greg draws some fouls and gets their big men in a little foul trouble to start with, and if that happens, they won't want to defend Jerryd taking the ball to the hoop like a madman.
- If Jerryd gets fouled, he makes his free throws.
This game is made for Jerryd Bayless to get some real PT in the late first or early second quarter, run out on the break, take it to the hoop, and have some fun.
Oh, and yes, one other thing. Draw some fouls.

Foist!
I thought Jerryd should have started for a few minutes of the fourth last night, to do just that: drive the lane and make some foul shots… Nothing more, nothing less. Something he can do…
I'm with you on this
Though I think it would need to fit into the framework of our standard rotation. If he could see 15-20 minutes this game somehow I’d be all for it. It would be better to get him in early when everyone is fresh rather than have him play mop-up minutes in the 4th. Maybe two six/eight-minute runs in the first half, then try to get him one more somewhere in the second.
Things happen for a reason they say, but I say there's a reason things happen.
In a high paced game I want someone that can take care of the ball. No goofy turnovers please.
I get the paper, so I don't care!
Why is that?
In a high paced game, turnovers don’t hurt quite as much.
Witty Unpredictable Talent and Natural Game
Yeah, that's why we have Blake
… oh wait.

Great game for Jerrdy to play
I think he’d do a nice job defending Curry or Morrow, neither of which really has the game to draw fouls against Jerryd, which is Achilles heal on defense (oddly enough).
He'd be perfect vs Curry
Jerryd would actually get the favortism, FOR ONCE
This really depends on the extent of Bayless's injury
He was the first PG off the bench nearly every game (after Nate made the changes) until he hurt himself in practice. He may be only at 50% right now.
Agree
I thought Bayless was getting decent mins

has anyone seen an update on this?
I don’t recall hearing it mentioned last night, but am guessing it might’ve been a factor in his DNP.
Per the columbian
Blazers coach Nate McMillan said guard Jerryd Bayless is healthy enough to play. McMillan stated that he made the decision to keep Bayless off the court in Wednesday’s victory over the Detroit Pistons because he wanted to have experienced players in Portland’s second unit. "
thanks.
I actual understand Nate’s decision. As a coach, the safe play is the right play. You want to win and keep your job. As a fan, I want to see what Jerryd can do—even knowing that it might not work out. I take the risk because it’s more interesting.
similarly, Jerry Sloan is benching Eric Maynor in favor of a more experience option.
Oh wait…

Jazz fans must be killing themselves
that they don’t still have Brevin Knight playing in their second unit.
Totally agree.
We need a pure scoring threat off the bench. Travis was that guy until his injury. Rudy can score but is not the same threat that Jarryd is when he goes all B-Rex by attacking his opponent and the rim relentlessly. We could have used him last night when we got all relaxed in the 4th.

That would be lack of playing time?

If Jerryd Bayless is set to get some extra burn to sink or swim, then this is one of his better opportunities.

So, I watched "teen wolf too" the other night
This applies to both the Jason bateman and Michael j fox teenwolves. Remember how when they became angry, but not full on wolf, their eyes turn red? I think Jerryd does that every time Blake misses a shot near the end of the game. I think it is also likely that jerryd may kidnap Blake soon. And eat him.
I think my point is that Rex should clearly be getting more minutes, and the next game
is a good place to start. I suppose for all the reasons that jscot mentioned, but moreso just because it’s the next game, and I want him to play all the time.
So, good luck Jerryd. I hope you get lots
of minutes and destroy the Warriors. And try not to eat Blake. Unless he keeps playing the way he has been.
Still on the Rex bandwagon.

If Jerryd is healthy,
he should be getting regular playing time because he has earned it. Taking other factors into account he may deserve being given a larger role and a greater opportunity to help this team on certain nights. I agree with your common sense notion that the gelded Warriors may be one of those nights. My personal concern is the we do not see enough common sense or vision out of the people who are making these decisions.
As an additional note, I would also like to see DC get some first half run for many of the same reasons. I would love to get some meaningful looks at him under game conditions. I love his BBIQ and toughness, and have not bought into any of the negative speculations that have been made about him. I have heard (wink, wink) that JB has been working with him on his leg whipping technique for drawing fouls.
The best players only try to, "do it all," themselves when it is a playoff necessity or, on occasion, to put on a show. There is no need to belabor the point!
it's not really a matter of should he it's more of a we have to....
if we’re burning up our 2 “Starting” guards anyway, we kinda need to put another “point guard” out on the court…. it made sense for me, when I looked at it that way when jerryd did get to play, but what I don’t understand is why isn’t rudy starting instead of blake at the 2?
The Faith don't panic, the faith freaks out, burns out farms, and torchs small villages in the name of The Faith.
So what you're saying is...
If Jerryd has the ball, even if he doesn’t, and gets himself fouled….then………………he…….I got nothing…
I’m sorry, I’m still a little fuzzy on what you’re trying to get across here.

Not going to happen - no more minutes for Rex
But he said he would increase Bayless' minutes in a video from shootaround and in a Quick quote from the Bobcats game
Sometimes Nate makes no sense
Ceterum censeo Lakers esse delendam
I hear
we’re going to start playing more uptempo this year, too.
less Batum, less Outlaw
slower tempo
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
Every time the Blazers' opponent is in the penalty
and the players on the floor fail to take it to the rim, I start screaming, “Put Bayless in!!!” My theory is that Bayless draws fouls, but I could be wrong about that.
Who is this Jerryd you speak of?
Is he the white guy that was sabotaging the game last night? That guy definitely shouldn’t play against the Warriors.

Blake's just giving us a little Jarrett Jack nostalgia
Stepping on the sideline in crunch time against ATL, a wild jump pass turnover after driving baseline against Detroit. It brings a tear to my eye to remember those days.
The thing is
I agree with you completely, but is this actually a remote possibility? Not really. He might play some spot minutes but I doubt he plays more than 8-10.
Brilliant but there is at least one mitigating factor
Jerryd draws fouls unless the refs are not calling them.
That is the mitigating factor. The League does not want the game forfeited for lack of eligible players. The 7 Warriors are aided by 3 refs making it 10 on 12, so less an advantage than one might think. The assignment of refs for the game might be interesting in that light.
This same factor seems to work against Oden. The refs see how dominant he is and my thought is subconsciously do they want to make sure of every move that it is not marginal? If Jerryd trys to draw fouls they may well call offensive fouls instead.

True, but still worth the attempt
Some fouls you just can’t call an offensive foul. And I’ll gladly trade two Jerryd offensive fouls for two Anthony Randolph fouls, for instance.

Release the Rex !
B-Rex draws fouls in his sleep. My UA Wildcats ex-roomie told
me from day one that Jerryd really knows how to get to the hoop and
draw contact. Sounds like he can draw some fouls.

Good list
But Monta Ellis: 9% – is coming right at Greg all night.
Maybe Jerryd will play and maybe the Blazers use their normal rotations to practice for the varsity teams to come next week. Since Nate is saying he is changing the 2nd unit to be more of a power unit with Juwan he may be anxious to work them in as much as possible. So the question is does Jerryd play with this unit or do the Blazers simply play 9 player until Nic or Travis get back.
