channing frye

we hardly knew ya...

dude is lighting it up down in az... i know this is old news but this is my first post of the season... i don't know that i ever saw what he's showing us when he was here but he's a top notch guy and i wish him the best of luck this season... maybe it's the desert air?

still reeling w/ the loss of my boy travis... he's way underappreciated and underrated... it's sad that you on the fence fans won't realize this until december when his loss will be palpable..

I agree, Travis was stepping up his game, the shot would have come around.

On those rare occasions when Frye got several games in a row of 20 or more minutes, he produced, he even rebounded occasionally. But he was never going to get that kind of run here night in and night out.

I’m glad he found a place where he can play.

I am happy

for Channing, I am glad he found a place that would let him play, there just wasnt room for him in the portland lineup, he was always going to come behind LMA and Oden. He was also a liability on defense, lucky for him Phoenix doesn’t play defense

I hope I can get a bunch of championships, like 15. " - Greg Oden

If you don't mind your "Center" chucking up 24 footers instead of scoring low and rebounding, Channing Frye is your guy...

Of course, he’ll be the same place that Spencer Hawes and Mehmet Okur are this spring when the real NBA teams are still playing…

Also Hawes can't shoot 3's...

I am not sure who started this rumor but he is a career 30% shooter… that is like saying Andre Miller can shoot 3’s.

for a set shooter miller’s not bad… :)

I've seen him give up open 3s to take one step across the arc

and shoot a long two.

I'd rather have my "center" score 6 3's a night

Than have my PF chuck up 6 contested fadeaways from 18 feet early in the shot clock every night.

I don’t think that Frye would be having this level of success on the Blazers, due to differences in scheme, personnel, etc, but I’m a bigger fan of the Suns model than ours at the moment (great pass-first PG, dominant PF to work the middle, a bunch of guys that can spread the floor with the three).

you do know the Suns are 10-2, right?

you really think they’ll drop so far as to not make the playoffs in a more sucky than last year west?

You are a man of strongly held opinions, and it’s unfortunate that they are so often wrong. Or maybe it’s not unfortunate, I don’t know.

Because they're playing too much defense

they’ve developed their bench too much or because they have too much veteran payoff experience?

Bill Laimbeer played defense, too, and also had "Bad Boys" teammates Dennis Rodman and John ...

Salley doing the dirty work at power forward. So, although Laimbeer and James Edwards were face-up shooters at the 5 for the Detroit Pistons, both “The Worm” and “Spider” cleaned up the glass and played outstanding weakside help defense. Hell, I’m sure that fans of the 1989-1990 Portland Trail Blazers are more than aware of that fact.

But I suspect Fernandez sees all that and thinks: We get to hit arms! Cool!"

it's the system for Frye

he’s lighting it up because of the system the Suns use, a system that has been consistently proven to be not effective in the playoffs…they run and gun and everyone gets #s (Joe Johnson and Shawn Marion owe their contracts to Nash and that D’Antoni system), but when the game slows down they fall apart. Yeah Channing is hitting 3’s, good for him- he’s a good guy and I’m glad he’s getting some minutes and success

But we had Aldridge and Oden, so he would have been an afterthought here. He’ll put up great #s this year, and then the Suns will fizzle out of the playoffs when they meet a team with some legit big men (see: Portland, LAL, San Antonio) that actually require him to play down low, guard, and post up.

by rip_city_swagger on Nov 18, 2009 3:18 PM PST reply actions

true that… which is why shaq wasn’t a good fit for them… and yeah… not my dream to have 7 footers jacking 3’s but hey… if it works for you… lol… but you can see the confidence build as he gets more minutes and again… i just think he’s a stand up guy and so it’s good to see a dude who may have had doubts about his role/skillz get some minutes and some dap…

in the end it’s probably a greater loss for the locker room/community than the team w channing gone but yeah… hard to see him fit into blazers system with the same success… especially now that greg is coming out of his shell a bit… and play some for real big man post up ball…

i’m interested to see how we do against the top tier team, lakers, san antonio, boston, orlando….

by zuul on Nov 18, 2009 3:28 PM PST up reply actions

I don't think you've paid enough attention to the 2009-10

They’re playing decent defense, they’ve finally got a backup PG and their offense is running on all cylinders. They’ve only lost two games and one of them was playing the Lakers on the second night of a back-to-back at the end of a long road series.

And I think you significantly underestimate the success they were having in the 2007 playoffs until Stern stepped in.

Yep

The Suns have been my “other” team my whole life, and they deserved that series against the Spurs. That year proved that a truly dominant offense can make up for total ineptitude on defense.

Things happen for a reason they say, but I say there's a reason things happen.

I think the Blazers could have used Channing better last year...

but I do agree that Phoenix is a better fit for the guy. Seems to me if the Blazers had used him as a 3 point shooter (McMillan loves all his guys on the perimeter anyway) he would have been way more succesful in Portland instead of shooting long 2’s.

by Escrote on Nov 18, 2009 3:27 PM PST reply actions

It seems like everybody has amnesia.

I don’t know why everybody is surprised that Channing is shooting and making the 3s.

The summer before this last one, he worked hard and he practiced his 3-pt shooting. His intention was to shoot a lot of 3s last year. The problem was he got injured early on and never really became a significant rotation player.

Channing is one of those guys who needs minutes to get going, and there was no way he was going to get those minutes with LaMarcus and Travis ahead of him at PF and Greg and Joel in front of him at C.

by CatMan2 on Nov 18, 2009 3:46 PM PST reply actions

I think the Suns' ball movement really helps too

Its not that the Blazers don’t pass, but the Suns do a better job of getting guys open looks with faster ball movement.

frye always had range for a big man

unfortunately for us his range was limited to just 1 foot inside the 3 point line. the long distance 2 point shot is horrible in regards to risk vs reward. now that he has extended his range just a little, it has done wonders for his TS%.

by Philthyanimal on Nov 18, 2009 4:18 PM PST reply actions

Okay, this is just what I was referring to above.

Channing worked specifically on his 3-pt shooting, and intended to become a 3pt specialist during last season. His plan was derailed by injury and other circumstances. He had pretty much stopped shooting the long 2s.

by CatMan2 on Nov 18, 2009 4:59 PM PST up reply actions

To stop him, you just put a SF on him, defensively.

by timbo on Nov 18, 2009 5:42 PM PST up reply actions

Maybe so.

My point was that folks seem to only remember his propensity for launching long 2s, sometimes with good results, sometimes not. But in fact, following his intensive preparation during the summer before this last, he was determined to be a 3-pt specialist, and not continue to rely on the long 2s.

As to your point, he has good height, so he might be able to just shoot over a lot of SFs. I think that was the main attraction with Channing shooting the 3.

In which case your PF has to defend their SF

Which isn’t always a great matchup.

He creates defensive matchup problems for you by shooting so well outside. Either he pulls your big man outside or your big man has to defend someone quicker.

The flip side is that Channing, much as I like him, is his very own defensive matchup problem, no matter who he defends.

Product of the system...

Run-and-gun always produces a bunch of points for jump-shooter and quick 4s playing the 5 position.

Happy for Channing though. Seems to have finally found a home…

I'm happy he gets to play

but I think he would have gotten some PT last year too if he shot the 3. Ability to stretch the D is important to Nate, even if the person doing it is a mediocre defender.

is that it doesn’t make much sense to compare his role or team in Portland vs Phoenix, because his game is different.

I love Channing

And have ever since I first saw him play at Arizona, or should I say first saw him dominate my Beavers. I was incredibly happy when we got him, and even happier when I found out he got signed by the Suns. I knew instantly that it was the perfect system for him (and drafted him on all my fantasy teams lol), so it’s great to see him blossoming in their system and finally putting together a legitimately successful NBA career. Maybe down the road when he’s 35 we could bring him back as a “veteran presence,” who knows?

Things happen for a reason they say, but I say there's a reason things happen.

This is something I recently posted on my fantasy leagues message board...

Because Channing Frye is on the home page today I felt it necesary to drop some serious love. As a portlander I am and always will be a die hard blazers fan, but ask me who my favorite blazer of all time is and you will be suprised to hear it is not Clyde the glide or B-Roy. It is, with out a doubt Channing “turn off the water while you are brushing your teeth” Frye. Although his stats where far from impressive due to a lack of playing time on a roster that just didn’t have enough of it to go around, he made up for it with his brilliant personality and his love of everything that was Portland. More often than not you could find him checking out local food/art/music and getting bars to name food dishes and drinks after him. (ex: The Buffalo Gaps “Channing’s fries” and the Montages Channing Frye cockail) he blogged about reality tv and all of the NBA players who where really into World of Warcraft (as he himself was a fan). He once had a contest asking contestants to video tape themselves eating as many pancakes as possible and the most creative submission would win his friends/family tickets to an upcoming game. He rated everything on his “Frye scale” which was a picture of one to five french fries under whatever it was he was reviewing. He notably gave “Saw IV” one burnt frye. When I had the priveledge of meeting him last april at a verizon wireless with about 15 other people I sported my “Frye for Mayor” t-shirt proudly and spent about 5 minutes discussing the latest episode of Bret Micheals Rock of Love Bus. It was magic. To see channing doing so well for the suns is a heart warming feeling. maybe one day he will tell steve nash about the list he made of the sweatiest players in the NBA.

Last year I worked hard but I came down with a Staph infection, so I had to sit out for 3 weeks. This year I didn't catch no Staph infection so I was able to work out full. -Big bass Trav

Yes-- We had a glimpse

When Frye started the last five games of the 2007-2008 season (because Przybilla was injured), he averaged a double-double. I don’t have the exact numbers in front of me, but that was the first time I thought he could be doing a lot better in the right situation. Very proud of him!
