Is it just me, or are the refs getting worse?
As Portland fan since I came out of the womb and the doctor was wearing a Walton jersey prompting me to give him a thumbs up, I don't think I've ever seen the calls we are getting against us to be so debatable. Before I continue, I may be biased considering I only watch this team, so I don't see if refs call it as badly for other teams, but even when a call happens to go our way when it shouldn't have (which, nowadays, is happening as much as Andre Miller hitting a three), I still get slightly frustrated.
Even today, I still can't get the Golden State game from nearly a year ago when Rudy's jersey was grabbed as he was about to coast to the basket, and HE gets a foul call on him?!?! That's the game, had we won, that would have given us the Spurs instead of the Rockets in the first round. Then, I wouldn't have to hear from ESPN everyday how Portland is just so "inexperienced." I get it Jalen Rose, Adanda, and Bill Simmons, we're young and not ready, but I digress.
Anyway, yesterday, again, how is it that when going for a rebound, an opposing player can literally jump onto a Blazer's back and win it without a whistle, yet Joel takes a clear charge outside of the designated area, and it's a blocking foul? It happens in other games too. How does Carmelo Anthony simply jump into Greg whose arms are straight up and fall backward putting up a prayer, yet a whistle comes 2 seconds later literally as Oden is being helped from the floor? I'm still fuming about the game in Cleveland last year when Cleveland ties a record with only one turnover the whole game, but the game ends when Outlaw jumps to block LBJ's shot and a whistle blows only because it's Lebron.
Maybe I'm just being resentful, but these fouls cost us games. Last night, although I have to mention Portland played lethargically (again) and there was zero flow to our game, we still had a shot. I know we did absolutely nothing in OT, but just take away some of those fouls that weren't and call some of the fouls that were, and you have a different game.
I wish I could move to the late 80's of basketball to avoid all this junk.

Sloppy officiating really takes away from the game
We had a chance to win last night even with some of the bad calls… BUT if the refs get one of those calls right we would have been up a couple of points when the buzzer sounded.

agreed
One more correct call would have saved the game. That is why make up calls exist. We were about -6 in correct calls. It would not have been close to OT. They need to review calls more often, especially at the end of close games. I would be okay with that as a fan. I prefer a slow product turned out correctly, to a quick piece of junk.
A review of all whistles in final two minutes
would go a long way towards helping. That easily would have saved the Blazers two turnovers and given Atanta a goal tending on a Rudy three. Those 3 calls in the final minute of overtime killed any attempt at Blazer momentum.
The other side of this argument
is that Rudy was really close to traveling at the end of regulation. I’m sure Hawk fans would be upset about that if they lost…
well
was he really close to traveling, or did he travel? Steve Blake was REALLY CLOSE to being out of bounds on that heel-call last night, but he wasn’t. Black or white in NBA reffing please!
Exactly
Review is needed, stern sucks. I don’t care about fans who don’t want to wait for review. They can watch the game after it happens on DVR to fast forward the reviews. If a ref gets a reviewed call wrong, it should cost them. They should be required to stand behind reviewed calls. (Mistakes happen in the moment) The NFL has a show where they review the most debateable calls, and then determine if they are right or wrong. They follow it up with a break down of the rules and slow motion of the play to point out exactly when a violation is occurring, or when it has not occurred. I believe this would be great for the NBA, though they need someone FAR smarter than stern to be running it.
one thing i noticed while at the game live was that Atlanta's big men were pulling on Greg's Jersey (zaza in particular)

"Yeah, but Portland definitely is not one of them."
-New Orleans Hornets broadcasters at the end of the third quarter with the Hornets leading 74-59. Portland later ends up winning 97-89.
"They don't mind him shooting that shot at all. Rudy Fernandez is not that great of a 3pt shooter."
-New Orleans Hornets broadcasters right after a Rudy Fernandez missed 3pter. Rudy Fernandez finished the game with three 3pters on six attempts.

That happens all the time to all players
Those jerseys come untucked a lot.
"Fernandez, to my eyes, is the Blazer who walks that walk most comfortably. A lot of Portland's fans (egged on, dare I say, by their local broadcasters) lament things like how Ron Artest or Yao Ming get to hit Brandon Roy's arms.
But I suspect Fernandez sees all that and thinks: We get to hit arms! Cool!"

The Faith don't panic, the faith freaks out, burns out farms, and torchs small villages in the name of The Faith.
I follow Lang Whitaker's (SLAM editor, huge Hawks fan) tweets and
last night, he was apoplectic over what he saw as bad calls favoring the Blazers. All’s relative I guess.
It didn’t end up hurting the Blazers thanks to a great offensive board by B. Roy, but the loose ball call on Horford for climbing over Rudy for a tip-in, but giving the foul shots to Oden, who was standing 10 feet away, was my favorite bad call. They even had a 3-ref conference to make sure that was the right call, and they STILL got it wrong.
Hit it. Yes he did. Ohhhh yeah.

that was the worst call of the night
easily. we would’ve been up 3 maybe (providing Rudy hit his three frows) and there ya have it!
whoa
if by 10 feet away, you mean, having Horford resting on his shoulder, then you are correct.
When I saw the play live, it looked like a clear on Oden (ie, Oden would shoot), and it wasn’t until the replays that I noticed Rudy there.
However – this is twice that in the final minutes of a close game that Oden has gone 0-2 at the line. He’s a 75% shooter from the line, meaning there’s just a 6.25% chance of him missing both free throws. Missing all four…that’s a 0.39% occurance theoretically…
M, period. Fresh, comma.
If he thought the calls favored blazers, he should make a youtube clip of those calls
I’d really like a clip of the bad calls all ran together, combined with shots of McMillian stupefied by the awful calls, and the empty seats in the arena. Then we could post it to the hawk blog as the highlight reel. For fun, start it with real high lights, they had several great plays through the night, just not enough to win without blatantly bad officiating turning several possessions.
As an Atlanta native and a big Hawks fan (except when they play Portland), I am embarrassed by the lack of fan support.
That region of the country obsesses over college football, year-round, almost to the point of excluding all other sports.
Hit it. Yes he did. Ohhhh yeah.

The refs have always been awful
You either choose to ignore it and buy into the fantasy like I do or you can complain til the end of time.
There’s another option which includes boycotting the product until it’s fixed but NBA fans are far too fickle to ever attempt such an obvious solution.
Blazer Fan
Complaining about refs
is like complaining about not having cars that get 80 mpg. Sure, there are probably things that can be done to improve/fix the situation, but it’s not clear what’s the best thing to do about it.
My all-time favorites are the arguments about reffing biases and the rationalizations about the Spurs having a big international following or the league needing to throw some games the other way for appearances sake.
Did anyone else enjoy the up and down-no call when Joe Johnson hit the three in the corner?
I know I enjoyed it.

I wish the Ref strike was real
and we could go back to the replacements. I really don’t trust the current refs and some of the calls are real eyebrow raisers.

it's just you
In the NBA, athletes move so fast, so powerful, that rookies often have to “learn the speed of the game.” And these guys are specimines. Just physical freaks. The refs, on the other hand, are old men. It’s just not possible that they get every call right. It’s easy to second guess them when you’re watching a super slow mo replay.
That’s all I have to say about that.
whats so difficult about
putting 4 refs in a game? 5 refs to a game?
whats so hard about a guy in a booth watching the game on a monitor with rewind and a radio to the lead ref and saying, “Uh no, dip-poop. Rudy tipped the ball out of Zaza’s hands and there was zero contact. What are you doing, Javy? Free Throws? On a rebound? Javy! Put that thing back in your ear!”

I wish I could say that you are correct, but...
the way I see it is that the refs have been leaving smelly piles of stupid calls all over arena floors for years.
I have zero faith that it will ever get any better.

If stern ever quits, gets fired, or has a heart attack from being fat
whoever replaces will him will probably be better.
Things like the Blake call - foot on the line, in real time you have to make a call
some of those you will get wrong. No big deal.
What drives me nuts are the huge variations in what constitutes fouls. Shaq can clear out with his forearm, and so can LBJ. Other guys, not so much. Oden gets his feet set, takes a charge from a player running full speed and ends up on his back – no call. Oden get his arms tangled up away from the ball – foul on Oden.
I have given up blaming the refs. There’s nothing you can do that the Blazers haven’t already tried yet. The judgment calls, the backcourt violation that never was, the Blake-out-of-bounds that wasn’t, you can only go so far as to call them idiots. What does that accomplish. I think the best thing to do would be not get caught up in the situation and not get pegged as whiners. You need to pick your arguments, an early-season road game against a good Hawks team that you should have handily won is not the time. You can find equally as many faults in the Blazers ineffective defense and stagnant 4th quarter offense as you can find faults with the referees. We’re all homers, we see it from our side, and you can bet the Hawks fans weren’t thinking “boy we sure got lucky those refs were on our side”. Much like we never are when they go for us. Early in the first half, the Hawks couldn’t buy a foul. I bet they were frustrated and we were cheering. What can you do…

Time to actually start using the instant replay
Give me one reason why out of bounds calls that are in question shouldn’t be able to be reviewed by replay. maybe it would slow the game a little but that’s it.
Stern says fans don't want it to slow down the game
I don’t think he knows a single thing about what fans want.
i want challenges like the nfl has.
Top 5 songs near and dear to my ears:
The Mars Volta - L'via L'viaquez
Regina Spektor - Back of a Truck
Death Cab for Cutie - Little Bribes
Joanna Newsom - Monkey & Bear
Devendra Banhart - Long Haired Child
"like the nfl has"
I’ve heard those words so many times. The NBA usually lags 5-10 years behind the NFL in waiting to copy their ideas.
A replay goes a long way
If replays were instituted it would keep the “ref controversy” at bay. I’m tired of feeling like Stern is trying to make money or that there is ANY influence in refs calls what so ever. There was a 10-0 stint that the Hawks made where it was 3 3-pt-plays in a row that were all pretty questionable. Any replay takes that doubt out of fans and also instills that the correct call be made. Perhaps the idea of replay has been brought up but I’m sure if I were Stern and knew no replay = greater NBA numbers = more $$$$.
I’m completely fine waiting 10-20 sec for someone in a booth to clarify that a call was correct. Games shouldn’t come down to ref’s calls in the final minute, whether they should be making them or not.
The Refs aren't getting worse
They were always this biased. But if this gets you upset, wait for this year’s playoffs.
You have a point.
A few years ago when we were supposed to lose, I didn’t notice it very much. But now that we are supposed to win, I notice it A LOT!

I can't tell you how many times
I’ve cursed at the TV (see western conf finals Lakers vs Blazers game 7) watching Shaq literally throw guys, travel, hack, foul, muscle and nothing. This year watch Howard or LBJ. I think its takes all the sport out of the game and I can see how NBA players get so worked up on fouls when the replay comes around and there wasn’t anything.
Take Baseball for example, umpires have their scrutiny and they miss a call here and there but completely blown calls have been taken into consideration for a replay. Why not Basketball? I understand that officials “discrepancy” is part of the game and sometimes the call doesn’t go your way, but when its a blatantly blown call, and then another.. and then another.. it really makes you wonder how the game outcome would be had they had replay and made the correct call instead of blown.
The Blazers may have lost anyways given the refs blew some calls their way as well, but atleast on the plane ride home after a loss they’d know it was them that lost the game not blown calls. Also, if you won a game, wouldn’t you want to have the satisfaction of knowing it was legit and that the officials didn’t have an input?
Umpires are graded for their calls (or lack thereof). Perhaps if refs knew that there were consequences in making the wrong call (ie not officiating playoffs, pay cut, etc) they’d pay more attention the first time around instead of replays.
With so many options that could be done, it really makes you wonder why something hasn’t been done already
I agree with you but....
With so many options that could be done, it really makes you wonder why something hasn’t been done already
I am quite sure that the reason nothing is done about it is because His Royal Highness David Stern likes it this way.

This is correct
If refs were graded, it would need to be transparent. We should know what the league considers correct.
Umpires in baseball are a complete joke. The technology to replace umpires for a strike zone is simple. It would be able to declare strike or foul in a fraction of a second. Professional sports are slow to adopt technology. The NFL is the first to do it, but it takes time for the tards to follow.
Steve Javie HATES the Blazers
He’s always had it in for us. I just watched some 00-01 highlights where he gives Sheed a T just for looking towards him after a foul call.
Monday in Atlanta was no different. Granted, The Blazers didn’t really deserve to win, giving up a big lead as they did, as well as not having an answer for Joe Johnson going coo-coo for cocoa puffs.
Still, Johnson’s bobbled corner 3? That’s either a jump ball or a travel. There’s no way that call could even be anything else. It is unbelievable that nothing was called. That’s something you learn is illegal when someone hands you the basketball for the first time in your life.
Javie hated Buck Williams, and I believe that
he still does not care too much for Mike Rice.

Tennis solved the whole problem of blown calls with tech
The NBA is unique in difficulty, the speed/size and nature of play allow for a ton of judgement calls, especially in the paint.
But take some of the difficulty away (foot on the line, ball touching rim) with available technology to make it easier on the refs.
I agree some sort of accountability, some sort of quick review (last 2 minutes of period? offical with a monitor/headset?) is desperately needed.
But why, oh why the huge number of phantom or soft calls on Oden? You’ve got 4-6 guys banging under the basket on any given play, and somehow oden’s arm hair touching someone else is whistled? I just don’t get it. He’s not really commiting that many fouls.
