Like it or not, Roy is now a full-time small forward
Going into the season, the Blazers were thought to be so deep at the 3 position that Nate McMillan would struggle to find enough playing time for everyone. Now, just three weeks into the season, the Blazers' captain and All-Star shooting guard, Brandon Roy, is stuck playing small forward, indefinitely. Last night's game against Atlanta was the first that the Blazers have played without both Travis Outlaw and Nic Batum. During the game, Brandon Roy played 38 minutes, all of them at the small forward position. The only true small forward still on the active roster, Martell Webster, played just 11 minutes, essentially serving as Roy's backup.
What became clear to me watching the game last night was how much the loss of Outlaw limits the Blazers' rotation options. Outlaw was really the only guy on the team who could readily switch between the small forward and power forward positions, which allowed the Blazers to play a variety of lineups. Without him, McMillan is more of less forced to use a more traditional substitution pattern. Like Joel Przybilla has been doing with Oden, Juwan Howard will now platoon the power forward position with LaMarcus Aldridge, playing virtually all of the minutes when Aldridge is not in the game. And unless/until Martell Webster's play improves, it appears that he will play a similar role vis-a-vis Roy, coming in to play small forward when Roy is resting.
That leaves Steve Blake, Andre Miller, Rudy Fernadez to fill the vast majority of minutes at the guard spots (all pulling down roughly equal minutes), with Jerryd Bayless getting a few spot minutes here and there. If there are going to be any significant shakeups in the Blazer lineup in the next month or so, I suspect it will be in the way McMillan rotates through his guards.
Last night, McMillan started with Blake and Miller. Then, as he's been doing lately, he brought Miller out around the time he took Oden out, with 4 or 5 minutes left in the first quarter. I think this is a good strategy. It minimizes the amount of time that neither Miller nor Roy (our two best dripple-penetrators) are on the court and it increases the minutes that Miller and Oden are on the court together.
When Miller leaves, Rudy Fernandez comes in and plays the 2-spot, with Blake moving to the 1. If Bayless gets any minutes, it's unusually in relief of Blake (and alongside Fernandez).
It may well be that this is the most effective way to rotate through our guards, but what I'd really like to see Nate try is swapping Blake and Fernandez's roles. Of the four non-Roy guards, Blake is our best combo guard (he is best able to switch between the 1 and 2). It may make more sense, therefore, to start Fernandez at the 2 and bring Blake off the bench. His minutes wouldn't necessarily be any different, but he could play more of his time at point and, if paired with Bayless for part of the time, could free up Bayless to do what he does best, which is attack the basket.
I also think Blake's veteran presence would help steady the ship during the stretches in the early 2nd and 4th quarters where some of the starters are sitting and the team seems to lag and let other teams catch up. Most of all, though, I'd like to see what a starting (and ending) lineup that features Roy, Ferndandez, and Miller is capable of. Though Blake is a steady hand who contributes to the team in many ways (including many ways that don't show up in the box score), Rudy has a higher ceiling as a player and I have a hunch that he might respond well to being elevated to a starting role. Given the injury situation, I think it's at least worth testing that hypothesis.

but isn't it interesting
that Nate chose to play Blake instead of Miller, down the stretch of the ATL game?
that tells me that Steve is pretty high up on the food chain, and I don’t expect a lineup change.
Besides, Rudy would rather handle the ball off the bench, than remain parked in the corner with the starters

I don't know about that
Rudy may prefer handling the ball more, but I also get the feeling he would really dig the added spotlight that comes with being elevated to a starter. He seems to thrive with attention. He plays noticably better during clutch time. He’s always trying to engage the crowd. I think he really, really badly wants to be a starter and would respond well to the opportunity.
www.blazerguy.com
he can be a "finisher" and still get more minutes
Fernandez is going to get more PT “by default” now that Outlaw is out, and Webster is struggling
this “handling the ball” issue dates back to last year. Rudy wasn’t happy being “just” a spot-up shooter and asked for a “more important” role. If he was a starter, Miller and Roy would be handling the ball all the time…which is not good for #5. So, it may be best to keep him coming in off the bench, running the “white” unit early in the game, then leave him on the floor to take big shots (Travis’ old role) when the team is tied or behind at the end of games
But If the Blazers are protecting a late-game lead, a defensive/rebounding lineup would be a better choice than the 3-guard lineup playing a zone defense
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
I think I disagree
Rudy wants an increased role. I don’t think that necessarily equates to him wanting to handle the ball a lot more. I think it more equates to him wanting more minutes, and to be in the game at crunch time. I seriously doubt that he would not be happy playing off the ball when he’s in the game at the start or end, so long as he’s in the game and given a chance to contribute. Besides, the lineup could still be managed in such a way that he is in for periods of time when Roy is out, and he could be more of a playmaker at those times. I think he would be pretty pleased with that combined role.
How did you guys win that?

Heymoe gave us some insight, last June
He said there was a point in the season last winter when Rudy was unhappy with his role (because he was being asked to just spot up and shoot) and there was a deal in place to trade him to Phoenix. The Blazers brass voted, and the deal was turned down by a close vote. The source for this info was a “well-known” Blazer personality
So no, I don’t think that it’s just “more minutes” that Rudy is after. He wants to be a play-maker, not just a corner sniper. Nate has talked about “making sure that Rudy is handling the ball more” during the offseason and pre-season, so that dovetails with the anecdote, above.
I think Portland and Fernandez have an “understanding” re: what kind of role he prefers. (If the team hasn’t made this info “public” that’s really no surprise.) Rudy left a lot of CSKA money on the table when he agreed to sign for 24th pick slot money and come to the NBA, so it’s understandable that he would ask for and receive the opportunity to show the league all of his offensive talent, and not just his shooting accuracy

I somehow missed that
Do you have a link?
I’m curious who they were going to get from Phoenix in exchange.

I don't care what their roles are
As long as Rudy is getting the late-game shots, not Blake. Rudy is someone who absolutely thrives in big situations and steps his game up to match, Blake not so much. Whereas Blake seems more focused than Rudy) who sometimes looks disinterested) in the the more “boring” early goings of a game.
Its seems Nate doesn’t get this, or rather doesn’t make best use of Rudy in this way sometimes, like he feels the need to “reward” Blake by giving him late game chances.

I agree
I also didn’t like to see Miller riding the pine so long last night. He really should have been in there at the end. It should have been Roy/Fernandez/Miller.

Agreed
I don’t have a high opinion of Rudy, unlike most people here. But, he thrives in pressure situations and has ice water running through his veins. If anyone deserves to be in our closing lineup, it should be Rudy along with Dre. (plus the usual cast)

Brandon's getting worn down guarding SFs
I think this should be the biggest concern as a result of the Batum/Outlaw injuries. Heading into the season, Roy lost weight because he had a reasonable expectation that he would seldom guard larger SFs, anymore (that task would be handed over to Nic and Martell) Unfortunately, Batum is hurt and Webster is struggling. Brandon is being asked to defend larger players for longer minutes than ever in his career, plus atill be “the man” to initiate the offense at the end of close games. Is it any wonder that he runs out of gas at the end of a week-long road trip
The biggest concern is injury. Players can get hurt for all kinds of reasons (Outlaw hurt his foot without making contact with any other player, etc) but the possibility of injury increases as a player is more tired, so Roy is at greater risk now playing “only” SF every night than he would’ve been if he had remained a defensive SG.
There’s no easy solution for this, unless Webster finally starts to play more like a player who was selected #6 in the NBA draft, or if KP wants to acquire another forward to help take the load off of Brandon, while Travis and Nic are on the mend

Another possibility
In light of Jameer Nelson’s injury, Orlando may soon be knocking and inquiring about obtaining the services of Steve Blake. He’s a veteran PG with an expiring contract, the ideal temporary patch for a contending team that just lost its PG. The logical trade would be for Brandon Bass, whose getting very few minutes in ORL (because Rashard Lewis and Ryan Anderson play ahead of him). His salary is the same as Steve’s. He can play the 3 or 4.
I would think both teams would at least consider that trade, especially if the recovery times for Nelson and Batum/Outlaw are looking longer than first reported.
www.blazerguy.com
Well, acquiring Bass wouldn't really help Roy's predicament
I like Bass, even though he’s not really a great rebounder. He’s also not a SF or a center, so he’d be limited to backing up LMA, which I would be alright with.
But if KP trades Steve, he’s asking Bayless to backup Miller full-time, and Nate already has Roy dedicated to playing the 3, so Portland’s backcourt would be one injury away from oblivion. (And Jerryd has recently shown he can be clumsy on carpet-covered stairways)
So no, I don’t think Portland would consider this deal, at this time. Unless you have an idea to add to the backcourt depth to replace Blake (and no, I’m not talking about Patty Mills!)

Brandon better invest in some creatine and protein powders so he can get his weight back up
since he’ll be playing SF most of this year. Late night trips to voodoo donuts should help as well.

Heck yeah, start Rudy
I’m always hearing how Blake is such a great backup pg… why is he our starting 2?
...and that's a good thing
Maybe it's just how I view the game of basketball, but I hate it when folks call Brandon Roy a small forward.
Yes, Roy does DEFEND the 3 in a small ball lineup. Yet, with regards to offense, Roy is strictly the 2. On offense, the 3 essentially stands in the weakside corner and shoots three-pointers when the ball is swung out to him. In the so-called three-guard starting lineup, Steve Blake is currently the 3. I recognize that it’s a technical thing, but it still bugs the hell out of me.
Dear Paul Allen:
Fire Nate McMillan & hire Jeff Van Gundy.
Sincerely,
AK1984
I agree entirely. It bugs me too.
by BlazerFanSince1970 on Nov 17, 2009 5:43 PM PST up reply actions
and what's bugging me
is when folks advocate starting Rudy in that "corner SF role’ instead of Blake. There’s at least 3 reasons why its a bad idea
1) Fernandez has told the coaching staff that he doesn’t want to be “limited” to a spot-up shooting role, in the past
2) the team needs Rudy’s scoring and energy coming off the bench (he’s the best “6th man” candidate)
3) the Blazer’s team defense has been outstanding with the 3-guard starting lineup
I agree that Rudy should play more mpg than Blake, but that’s Nate’s department. Starting Miller-Blake-Roy and subbing Rudy in for Andre early (when Oden is also leaving the game) is working. No more lineup changes are necessary, unless Roy “begs out” of guarding SFs and Nate puts Webster back in the starting lineup because Roy is getting too “worn down” defending 3s
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
Okay, but
my point was pretty clearly about defense. You can call Roy a guard, but the other team was playing a small forward, and Roy was defending the 3 virtually the entire night. And as long as we’re playing with the current rotation, Roy will be stuck defending the other team’s small forward all night.
www.blazerguy.com
Yeah, I agree Brandon Roy defending opposing small forwards often will be an issue in the long haul.
Dear Paul Allen:
Fire Nate McMillan & hire Jeff Van Gundy.
Sincerely,
AK1984
He'll only be defending the three until Batum is back.
I’m not worried.
