All night junk,Nov 17
I am pulling an all nighter staying up for the Leoniod light show,excellent viewing conditions and it is getting better
I normally would not even bother posting something so trivial but the old JD crashed [is dead to me]and I am doing my best to stay awake so I am hoping that someone will find this beacon of junk in the dark and help me out here.I hope everyone has noticed just how much of an abject failure the Blazers are,a measly 4 out of 5 on the road?really? We suck pretty bad and should just concede the season in hopes of getting lucky in the lotto,feel free to put this in a block quote in the next game thread.an 8 and 4 start is just not going to get it. Good luck PA,a good musician friend has been dealing with the same thing for 6 or 7 years and still has enough energy to play me into the ground.

The Hawks game was funny to me
When Blake missed those shots down the stretch I was like, “Dumb Blake.” Then I was like, “Dumb Nate, Miller should be in.” Then I was like, “Miller would miss those shots. Dumb Nate, Rudy should be in.” Then I was like, “Wait a minute, why is the superstar passing in the crunch instead of going to the basket to draw a foul?” So in the end I was like, “Dumb Roy.”
Failing to complete a sweep on the road vs the best team in the East is a total failure

Yup
I laughed when he stepped out of bounds. I said to Blake on my TV, I said, “Oh, you’re going to get killed now.”
Ya
A lot of bad memories for Bedgers when it comes to pg’s stepping on the sideline on that sort of a play. I thought it was a good call though, even if Barrett and Rice were whining about it…
RUDY > MJ
I watched the ATL feed
I like those guys. They weren’t too biased and were quick to praise either team. They would even show Blazers highlights going to break. I don’t know if the Blazers broadcast ever does that.
No, they do it
On good plays.
But yeah, our broadcasts are homers.
They’ll show the other team dunking, making a jumper, especially if our team hadn’t done enough highlights to fill the time.
they did whine about it too much
but it wasn’t a good call. The refs had been letting the teams play a bit more aggressive at the end of the game then the ref makes a call (later revealed to be marginal at best) on a move 25 feet from the hoop. It’s not like he stepped on the baseline on the way to the rim.
You won.
by Roybot on Nov 11, 2009 1:41 AM PST
It was an annoying call, no doubt, especially late in a heated game...
I found the Josh Smith, take two dribbles, cover up the ball like a running back breaking through the A gap, put the ball back on the floor and somehow end up with an and1 more annoying. That play made Lebrons crab dribble look like a solid fundamental play. That and the phantom, away from the ball call on Oden as Aldridge grabbed the board, were two absolutely awful calls. Damn near unacceptable. But, I have to accept them…sigh…..
RUDY > MJ
My only problem with the refs was the 2 or 3 travels in a row that they didn't notice

Yeah
That one play was bad where that one guy pretty much traveled twice. Oden was clobbering guys towards the end. All his fouls are mean.

Did the game day thread get deleted?
I just finished the game. I know some will point to the 3 (maybe 2) bad calls near the end of the game, which I agree with, but how about the atrocious calls in regulation. Bibby I guess has the right to pick the ball up and start dribbling again any time he wants, plus 2 horrendous traveling calls. Atlanta picked up 9 points on these 3 bad calls.
The bad calls were definitely lopsided in Atlanta’s favor and I could complain on a few more obscenely bad calls by the refs tonight, but take away our very, very sloppy ball handling and we win this game in regulation despite the bad calls. It’s not so much we were plagued the whole night with bad ball handling, it’s just some of that was hard to take. I think with a little more maturity most of those disappear. Oden had 3 or 4 pretty ugly giveaways alone.

Only recently did I catch Lucille and George explain how she got him to marry her.

All in all I think I maybe liked the premise and execution of Voyager a tiny bit better than TNG, although I really liked the characters of Data, Troy, Worf, and Picard. But their writers were much too moral for very long resulting in a ton of boring episodes that were boring the first time and boring on reruns. And both shows have some characters that nobody cares about.

Many of the original show episodes with Kirk and Spock have really not aged well. Reruns of that are rather comical than really entertaining, although there are exceptions.

What wasn't meant to be in real-life now is possible in fantasy: I got Blair!!!
And I got Iljasova who is playing awesome for an unknown player (gives you threes and rebounds and points and FT% and…) who will be replacing the forward posse in the Bucks lineup soon enough. The European Rashard Lewis I told ya. Woot Woot!
Then I thought about moving Artest to Cabbie for Gallinari, but I’m not so sure about that anymore since while he has an unexpected slump at the line he is saving me with his boards and assists and I don’t really trust Gallo’s health. We’ll see, maybe when Pau is back Cab has more trust in trading around. Then I wanted to move him to our Spanish friend with Gasol for Pierce (who does the same with better efficiency) and Blatche, but realized at the last moment that Blatche is only that good because Jamison hasn’t played. Decisions decisions.
Oh, and I killed Cab in FF! Go Flacco!

It’s a joke on the Latin phrase ceterum censeo Carthaginem esse delendam (or short delenda est carthago), attributed to the Roman senator Cato the Elder who allegedly closed all his speeches with that phrase. It call for the destruction of Rome’s arch rival Carthago (several bitter wars, called “The Punic Wars” that were very entertaining in terms of history. Hannibal and stuff). Literally it says “Furthermore, I think Carthago must be destroyed”.

Clutch: Rudy vs. Dirk
http://thebiglead.com/?p=28492
Man I remember so many buzzer beaters by Dirk that it’s funny people say he is un-clutch. And Rudy definitely seems to have a knack for hitting shots when it matters (he also misses occasionally like vs. Utah last year). But at least he is making himself available to hit the big shots with his great off-the-ball sprints. Keep him in the game Nate.

Bill’s kind of like the Basketball version of Bill O’Reilly. When you see O’Reilly leave his show to do an interview (most famously with Jon Stewart, but also elsewhere), he’s a completely different person. It’s clear he’s at least partially playing a character the rest of the time.

we now have a “choir of meadowlarks” (I think I made that up) that visits us every day. There are about 30 of them. Apparently they’re usually a solitary bird except in the spring when they hang out with the object of their desire but they will occasionally form small flocks in the fall and winter.

Ya got me curious
It’s an “exaltation” of larks, which is a wonderful and fitting word for a flock of meadowlarks. Choir is also a good word for them — sounds perfect to me.
My husband ran into an exaltation last Saturday, and it was the highlight of his birding trip. I’d be ecstatic if they were one of my yard birds.
It's wonderful the variety of birdlife we have here in such
a harsh environment. I identified a rock wren the other day. His beak is about 1 1/2 inches long which is out of all proportion to his body size. Really cute. Hubby goes out every morning before dawn to unfreeze the water dishes and puts tepid water out for the flocks.

The very long version, not that fun if you don’t understand it, but it was a true miracle victory coming back from behind against an almighty opponent. Hungary had beaten Germany something like 8-3 earlier in the tournament, correct?
I remember that from the World Cup almanac-type book I had as a kid.
Yeah, and that was the expected result so nobody was surprised when they went ahead 2-0. Hungary clearly had the best offensive players of the era, and only survived some phases in the finals because their keeper had the game of his life. Although I think Germany did play some scrubs in the first game because they were already qualified for the next round and couldn’t get a better place.
Ceterum censeo Lakers esse delendam
Also the historical implications were huge. For Germany it was the re-birth of a nation, with the players still celebrated as heros as long as they lived, for Hungary it was an incredibly unexpected and bitter loss with the players pretty much ostracized and lucky they didn’t get executed or sent to Siberia.

I'll take it
I still see high 50s.
To me, we have played under our skill level and still have a very good record.
We will get it together and dominate this season.
we've also been getting very lucky
We have an unsustainable FT% (higher than the #1 team last year), an unsustainable 3 pt% allowed (way better than the best team last year), and an above average FT D so far.
and very unlucky, given that we are shooting a very poor percentage. If we count on opponents regressing to the mean, we need to account for us as well. We haven’t shot well at all so far.
i cry for nic
for all of our opponents missing open threes, we have a 43% three point shooter missing eight three pointers in a game, many of them open looks.
i cry for nic
i cry for nic
It's very, very strange.
Of course, there’s always a concern that this season is Blake returning to Earth after a great (career?) season.
Perhaps it’s something strange, like he didn’t keep his weightlifting regimen this Summer? A year ago, word was that Blake came in with scary arm strength, which probably helped him hit threes when tired.
shooting isn't about the arms though usually
"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"
2008 Civil War: Oregon 65 - Oregon State 38
but it’s about endurance. If your arms are strong, your stroke is consistent. Positioning the arms in the same place to achieve the same results.
i cry for nic
he isn't shooting nearly enough to get his arms that tired though
it’s one thing to do like a 3 point contest where you shoot 30 times in 30 seconds, but he’s only shooting 20 times max per game. it’s the legs that should be fatigued, not the arms. perhaps he should think about changing his pre game warmups if it is his arms that are fatigued.
"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"
2008 Civil War: Oregon 65 - Oregon State 38
keeping your arms up on defense, throwing passes, shooting. arms get tired quickly in an NBA game.
i cry for nic

Surgery at the end of May/beginning of June. Six to eight week recovery time. The endurance/arm strength argument makes sense to me.

According to Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News, multiple sources have told him the Warriors have been reaching out to teams in recent days in an effort to trade Ellis — apparently at Don Nelson’s urging. His agent has also been given permission to talk to teams about a potential trade.

Hollinger is becoming a Rudy fan
• One observation I left out of Monday’s Daily Dime: This was the first time I’d seen Portland play in person this season, and I was very impressed with the improvement of Rudy Fernandez on defense. His activity off the ball was far greater than I’d seen in his rookie season, and he was really disruptive in passing lanes, as well.
My spies in Portland concur that he’s improved quite a bit at that end, which is one more reason the Blazers rank a surprising third in defensive efficiency.
Ceterum censeo Lakers esse delendam
Rudy definitely looked better last night
It left me wondering yet again why he hasn’t played more minutes this season.
He's turning into a ball hawk
The guy is always one step ahead of the play, and with his quickness, he could develop into a very good off ball defender. He’ll always have some strength issues, but when Nic gets back, that’s the guy who we can put on the monster 2-3s in the league

It's only in the last couple of games that Rudy's looked good to me
I’m convinced his back was bothering him at first, and he seemed a little “off” compared to last year. Maybe it was fatigue, maybe it was a matter of getting used to the Blazers again. Some of his turnovers made me want to throw things at the TV. I understand why his minutes were down, at first. His improved play is one of the highlights of the road trip.
He was soooooo much better last night than he's been all season.
He had enough energy to do everything but win the game for us. On the other hand, if he’d had as many minutes on this road trip as the other guys had he probably wouldn’t have shown much energy either.

Something always gets in the way. It's notoriously bad timing.
This week we’ll be watching over the dog, for example.
Though neither my wife nor I are big fans of going to Oakland in general. Terrible traffic, not a great area, almost always a weekday game. The wife would usually prefer to skip the Oakland game and see a home game in Portland instead. It’s really hard to turn down an offer like that. So last year we came to Portland to see Games 1 and 2.

Yeah the Oracle has been a house of horrors for Portland
But then Stephen Jackson has been the cause of a lot of those, even after Baron’s departure.
I know, they don't even have Biedrins.
Didn’t Oden have a monster game against GSW last year? As long as Maggette doesn’t infuriate him (like LMA last year), he could have a huge game.
Oden had his big game against Biedrins. He really struggled against the floppers in the second Oracle matchup. We shall see.
i cry for nic
He's gotten calls his whole career
His career is built on barreling into the lane and getting the call. He doesn’t do anything else.
I dunno why, refs love him.
Bayless gets this same benefit more often than not, when he plays that is...
Maybe refs like out of control penetration with no desire to make a pass?
RUDY > MJ
i would take that
but he needs to make more free throws and also shoot the outside jumper just enough to keep teams honest

the scary part is that both LMA and Oden are very vulnerable to flops, something Golden State is very good at.
They also have a lot of quick pesky guards who will double team us. Its a scary matchup.
subtraction of Nellie would be a good start.
Ellis/Randolph/Biedrins is not a bad start— with a good coach they would have a shot at the back end of the playoffs with potential to grow.
Aren't there already rumors that Ellis is being shopped?
Nellie seems to be mailing it in. I’m surprised they haven’t made the change. The franchise is in a spot where it looks like they’re a mess, but they’re in position to actually be a decent team.

"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"
2008 Civil War: Oregon 65 - Oregon State 38
Houston is a smarter, more disciplined team with a better coach
However, GSW has small defenders who will guard our bigs by flopping and quick guards that can give us fits.
Arand and Mikki aren’t great floppers though. Arand was absolutely murdered by LMA last year.
i cry for nic
that's true.
Turiaf on Oden and Maggette on LMA is what Nelson will do if he has a rare night where he is making good decisions.
talented was the wrong word choice

TiH, Morty and Tinfoil can vouch for me that I did this weeks ago and don’t mean at all to be tasteless info in the wake of Paul Allen’s news yesterday. I’m not gonna do/finish this fanpost because it will come off as wrong. As my mentor TiH suggested, it would be good to post in the JD because you guys know where I’m coming from and there’s some good info.
I have a gut feeling that PA will fight through this and be completely fine. Get well Paul, and thank you. We definitely all under appreciate what you brought here.
My unfinished post after the jump
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
10/23 Draft Fanpost: The Next of Kin:
Who would own the Portland Trailblazers, Seattle Seahawks, and Seattle Sounders if God forbid, Paul G. Allen nobly fall victim to an untimely disease or his potentially deteriorating health? What if God forbid, something happened to PA, who takes over the team?
The answer to this question may be Jody Allen Patton, Paul’s only sibling and current CEO of Vulcan.
Paul’s Health:
Trying to find public information regarding Paul’s health is like looking for Blazer’s full preseason video game footage. Personal medical issues are of course private, and I shouldn’t expect to find full disclosures of Paul’s previous health issues anywhere. A couple publicly known facts:
1. In 1983, Paul was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease, and was successfully treated by several months of radiation therapy and a bone marrow transplant. Hodgkin’s survival rate is around 90%, making it one of the more curable forms of cancer.
The five-year survival rate refers to the percent of patients who live at least five years after their cancer is treated. Many of these patients live longer than five years.
Stage 1: 90%-95%
Stage II: 90%-95%
Stage III: 85%-90%
Stage IV: about 80%
Long-term health problems can occur after being cured of Hodgkin’s disease. A small percentage of patients can develop other health problems after being cured as a result of the therapy they received. These health problems include leukemia, breast cancer, and heart disease. (Source: WebMD)
As far as we know, Paul was successfully treated and the cancer entered remission.
2. According to John Canzano’s article, "A healthier Paul Allen is a healthy sign for the Trailblazers," Paul had undergone a prior valve surgery and underwent a second heart surgery.
“I’m fine, finally,” Allen said Tuesday. "I’m much, much better. I hit a few bumps in the road.
“Your health … is the most important thing in the world, isn’t it?”
In October 2008, Paul was presented with the First Citizen Award which featured keynote speaker and friend, Bill Gates. Paul was not in attendance and was recovering from an unspecified medical procedure. I found this video on YouTube of his prerecorded message. Paul does not look very healthy and this could be post his initial valve surgery as speculated in JC’s article.
Paul’s Family:
From the little I know, Paul is a bachelor without any kids. If he was using the Shawn Kemp method of birth control, it is safe to assume that they would still be too young to take over a professional franchise in the next decade.
Jody Allen Patton
Born: 1959
Married to Golf Course Manager Brian Patton
Owns a 757 purchased for her by Paul
They have three sons with the eldest Duncan at age 20 ("The Accidental Zillionaire: Demystifying Paul Allen" unauthorized biography of Paul Allen by Laura Rich…This is different from an article of similar name called the "Accidental Zillionaire" in Wired magazine written by Paulina Borsook: http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/2.08/allen_pr.html ) The Wired article is an interesting recap of Paul Allen.
http://www.alleninstitute.org/images/people/jody_patton_photo.jpg
From The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation:
Jody Patton is president and CEO of Vulcan Inc., the project and investment management firm she co-founded with investor and philanthropist Paul G. Allen, in 1986. Since then, she has developed and led a wide range of Allen’s business and charitable endeavors around the world.
Patton is Co-Founder and President of The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, which builds strong communities and supports vulnerable populations throughout the Pacific Northwest. In addition, Patton is President of the Board of Seattle’s Experience Music Project, the critically acclaimed music museum, and the Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame. She serves as vice chair of First & Goal, Inc., and is on the board of Charter Communications.
Interesting to note that she is "co-founder" in about every Paul Allen venture. She is also Co-Founder and President of Paul’s other charitable organization, The Allen Institute of Brain Science.
From the book by Laura Rich, "The Accidental Zillionaire: Demystifying Paul Allen"
Once Allen earned his Microsoft millions and needed help managing them, he asked Jody to come on board and help out. She mainly focused on his philanthropic and arts foundations, and pretty much everything else that wasn’t related to technology. She would head up the PA Foundation and maintain her interest in arts by overseeing the development of art endowments and other projects, like the Experience Music Project. She helped manage what would become an unruly mess of personal affairs, including the building of his house on the posh Mercer Island on Lake Washington between Seattle and Bellevue and a controversial purchase of Sperry Peninsula in the San Juan Islands.
In 2001, Paul replaced longtime Vulcan chief William Savoy with Jody.
Some commentaries/opinions I found about her leadership:
Some former employees also question the appointment of his sister as CEO of Vulcan in June, 2001. At the time, her senior management experience was limited to running his philanthropy. Several former employees complained she could be imperious and unpleasant, which they say poisoned the work atmosphere. Patton says her management style is “tough but fair.” She laid off 100 Vulcan workers shortly after taking over. And she rankled others with one habit she has at meetings: A board member of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Patton will sometimes put together a list of the people around the table at Vulcan meetings and then draw lines to the Bard’s corresponding characters. – Businessweek, May3rd, 2004. http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/04_18/b3881106_mz020.htm
I have been able to confirm the reason why so many people are leaving the Paul Allen Brain Project in droves. Apparently, Paul Allen’s sister, Jody Patton, who manages the Paul Allen Brain Project, is an "arrogant", "overbearing", and "incompetent" "dictator" who micro-manages in excess, and whose winning personality poisoned the work atmosphere and smothered creativity, motivation, and initiative. Patton says her management style is "tough but fair", but I say, face reality, Jody Patton got the top management position because her brother is the billionaire Paul Allen, not because she was qualified. Evidently, she is not qualified to manage a project of this size and complexity. The proof is in the pudding; If Jody Patton could manage a project properly, then why is everyone bailing out of the Paul Allen Brain Project? She took a noble initiative to map gene expression throughout the brain and suffocated the life out of it by her incompetence. – Information Engineer, May 2006 http://www.informationengineer.org/2006/05/27/why-is-everyone-leaving-the-paul-allen-brain-project-answer-paul-allens-sister-jody-patton.html
More than a dozen insiders, most of whom spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of retribution from Allen’s lawyers (all signed intimidating non-disclosure agreements as a condition of employment), say EMP’s woes can be blamed on its ruthless management style, its culture of secrecy and its lack of a community mission. If these things don’t change, the museum will continue to struggle.
Ramifications:
• Estate Taxes: If Jody has to whether the Estate Taxes of PA, it would be most certain that she will continue her cost cutting ways to support the estate plans. Sometimes it’s such a big burden, that a family must sell everything in the estate to settle the taxes. Unfortunately, the Portland Trailblazers would be one of the bigger assets on PA’s books. This would potentially lead us to manage the team similar to the Memphis Grizzlies and LA Clippers. Even PA was close to selling the Blazers after the JailBlazers, imagine his Jody at the helm after being schooled in the school of Vulcan Ventures.
• Potential sale of the PTB
• Move the team to Seattle so Jody can be closer to all the properties
• Kevin Pritchard would most likely leave for greener pastures if he’s handcuffed with Jody
• Free agents come here for the money…If there’s no money…
• Sell to the highest bidder (which is most likely outside of PDX sans Phil Knight) then Stern moves Memphis/Charlotte back to PDX
Paul obviously is no financial genius either, and not that easy to deal with (from what little I had to and have heard). But he is a true fan of sports and pretty much willing to spend what it takes to finance his “toys”. She is pretty much a blank slate, so it’s hard to say what she would do with the franchise(s).
Yep, it's also very clear he sees the Blazers as part of his family
He seems like converted to a native Portland guy now too, even though it’s not his primary home.
I think he only wanted to sell the team when it looked like it was the only real course of action. He seems thrilled that he was able to keep them.
Yeah, he's a fan and it's his hobby...
I mean, they recently loss north of $100 million…
If Vulcan operates the PTB, we will be in big trobule
I took a course on Estate Planning
and I’m sure they already planned it, but if everything goes to Jody, her tax bill can be about north of $500 million…But if it’s funnel to the foundation, they should be fine.
so I would expect him to influence to the highest bidder he can deal with, and move someone else back to PDX
I bet there would be an ownership swap… move another team to Seattle rather than making 2 teams move, it’d be better for the league and it’s fan base if only one relocates, and an Ownership group from Portland buys the Blazers as was discussed when PA talked about selling the team previously… I could see the Boyles of Columbia leading an effort to buy the Team… but I doubt Knight ever does
Last Nabokov Work published today:
When Vladimir Nabokov died in 1977, he left instructions for his heirs to burn the 138 handwritten index cards that made up the rough draft of his final and unfinished novel, The Original of Laura. But Nabokov’s wife, Vera, could not bear to destroy her husband’s last work, and when she died, the fate of the manuscript fell to her son. Dmitri Nabokov, now seventy-five—the Russian novelist’s only surviving heir, and translator of many of his books—has wrestled for three decades with the decision of whether to honor his father’s wish or preserve for posterity the last piece of writing of one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century. His decision finally to allow publication of the fragmented narrative—dark yet playful, preoccupied with mortality—affords us one last experience of Nabokov’s magnificent creativity, the quintessence of his unparalleled body of work.
an author’s wishes and the deprivation of a great artist’s work from the public has always interested me. I’m not sure what I’d do if I was the son.
2008 Civil War: Oregon 65 - Oregon State 38
yeah, I agree. We needed Roy to take over more.
We were also incredibly careless with the ball especially in the 3rd quarter. Rebounding was obviously a huge factor— that I can chalk up to tired legs.
Is Roy deferring more this year? I remember hearing the McMillanizer say that Brandon was met with a wall in the fourth quarter of a game not too far back.
I get the paper, so I don't care!
I think he's deferring a little more, and also just not playing as well.
One interesting tidbit is that he’s played 22 more minutes than anyone else in the league so far— partly because we’re the only team that’s played 12 games, but still.
That extra game definitely reduced the impact of those 22 extra minutes.
Personally it feels like he’s really struggling with how much or little to defer to Andre Miller. That botched fast break last night was a good example.
my thoughts exactly
Andre has taken him out of his normal groove a little bit. He is either scoring in bunches, or not scoring at all. They will get it though, time is their friend…
RUDY > MJ
So, will Rudy be Mr 4th Quarter while Outlaw is out? Maybe LMA? Or perhaps a rotation of players (sounds like the “wallace era Blazers”, yikes).
I get the paper, so I don't care!
I still expect the eventual 4th quarter lineup to be
Miller, Rudy, Roy, LMA, Oden.
Though Nate is hard to predict.
it will get that way eventually. probably by January if I had to guess.
Personally I'd use that lineup with both Trout and Batum back, and with Blake playing better.
Except in situations where we specifically need Trout’s tough shot-making or Batum’s lockdown defense on a SF. There’s no situation where Blake would be in, except if he’s got the (sorry Jake) hot hand and Nate trusts his gut.
That’s just what I’d do though. I’m worried Nate’s ideal 4th quarter lineup is Blake, Roy, Outlaw, LMA, Oden. The problem with that lineup is that everyone says “it’s great!” when they win, but they’re never sure if that lineup is responsible for a loss. There’s always an alternative reason.
I think Nate will be dragged kicking and screaming into the ARBLO lineup, possibly slowly as DtL notes.
RALBO? LOBRA?
in just about every game you are going to need Batum's defense IMO
he would have helped on Johnson yesterday
"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"
2008 Civil War: Oregon 65 - Oregon State 38
That depends on Rudy's defensive progress to some extent.
If the SF isn’t a major threat, and Rudy’s stronger at the three than Batum, he’d reasonably get the nod.
the problem with that line-up is that it doesn’t spread the floor well… Talent wise it’s great, but Rudy is the only one in there not operating in the paint… it lets the opponent collapse 4 men into the paint thus making it harder for everyone to operate… (this is the flaw in signing Miller)
You’re Right-The Arkitect
IMO, "spreading the floor" is overrated.
Miller has managed to be an effective player with guys like Carmelo and Iguodala despite the fact that he’s not a good shooter.
effective yes… but neither the Nuggets or Cav’s or Sixers were “Great” teams the years he played for them… we want greatness… effective just won’t cut it
.
.
also, the isolation game in the NBA is largely dependent upon the ability to drive and kick to the open shooter if needed… it’s what keeps defenses from collapsing on the man with the ball everytime he heads into the lane
Honor Jordan, Retire #45
by The Arkitect on Nov 17, 2009 2:50 PM PST up reply actions
Yes, the "Miller can't shoot a 3" thing hurts our system
Though there are separate arguments about that.
The advantage is that we’d have…
- Two players who can hit a 3 (Roy and Rudy, and if LMA improves, 3 in a pinch).
- Two players who can create on their own (Roy and Andre, though Rudy would love to expand into that role in the future)
- Two midrange shooters (Roy and LMA, with Andre and Rudy as secondary options).
- One outstanding rebounder (Oden of course)
- 4 players who can get in the paint (All but Rudy as you noted)
Defense is tougher. Really, the only good defender is Oden. Roy, Rudy and LMA could still grow into defenders, and Miller is already maxed.
To some extent, it depends on the team we’re playing on how important that defensive presence of Batum would be.
I won’t get into whether signing Miller was a mistake, or if his signing was a good move and other mistakes are going on.
if Roy is the one driving (late in games he should be) then that only leaves Rudy on the perimeter… if Andre is the one driving, then yes, your scenario works… but do we want Andre driving every possession late in the game?
Honor Jordan, Retire #45
by The Arkitect on Nov 17, 2009 2:52 PM PST up reply actions
If Roy is the one driving, let's be honest, he rarely kicks it out.
He does at times though… he won a game kicking it to JJ1.
But if he wants to kick it out, there’s still LMA from 18-20 feet, and Andre from 15 or so feet. LMA’s winning basket a year or so ago was from a driving Roy to LMA for an 18 footer.
If he’s driving and kicking it out because we need a three with seconds left, very few teams actually fall for that anyway. We’d need a different play called at that point.
you mean like last night?
Steve played the end of regulation and all of overtime.
Are you telling me that Andre doesn’t offer some stuff we’d need there, like drawing fouls? Sure, we can kick it out for the three… or we can kick it to give Andre for him to drive and kick/draw foul.
The offensive system needs to fit the playes, not vice versa. The Celtics don’t take Rondo out of the games late because he doesn’t shoot well enough. Tony Parker is still on the floor with Manu handling the ball.
i cry for nic
correct… but it should fit Roy’s game, not Miller’s IMO
.
.
Late in Games Roy is a drive and kick offensive player… Miller is a post up player… if you want to gear the offense to run Miller’s style then that’s another discussion i think… but Roy is our star, and running the offense for his style late in games seems to mean 2 other shooters need to be on the floor
Honor Jordan, Retire #45
by The Arkitect on Nov 17, 2009 3:08 PM PST up reply actions
correct… but it should fit Roy’s game, not Miller’s IMO
Best case is to make both of their games effective in the clutch, since they’re both able to create for other players.
I just don’t think their ability to create plays is mutually exclusive, forcing one off the court when the other is on. I think we disagree there, and I’m cool with that.
yeah, we can agree to disagree… when Outlaw and/or Batum come back or Webster gets consistant and less hyper I can see us going small late in games when Oden is in foul trouble with a line-up of Miller, Roy, Rudy, SF of your choice, LMA…
I guess my opinion boils down to Andre needs to learn to Play with Brandon (and in the drive and kick set-up), not vice-verse and until that happens, I don’t have a problem with Blake in there
it’s not… it’s somewhat dependant on the threat of outside shots though… keeping the defense from collapsing on Roy (which is what they did last night anyway since Blake wasn’t hitting)
Honor Jordan, Retire #45
They aren't mutually exclusive.
Roy doesn’t get in the way of Millers game, in fact, he probably helps it. But the same is not true in reverse. Miller does get in the way of Roy’s game, if you want Roy handling the ball and creating for himself and others, Andre’s skill set is rendered useless. If you want to play Roy and Miller at the same time, you need to put the ball in Miller’s hands and let him do the creating the majority of the time. Late in close games, that is not a strategy I can support…
RUDY > MJ
a good offensive scheme captializes on both of their talents.
Does Rondo leave the floor for Pierce?
Does Parker leave for Ginobili?
i cry for nic
it’s not the scheme so much as what Brandon excels at vs. what Andre excels at… Hopefully Andre can adapt, cause I don’t think we really want to be messing with Roy’s strengths
Both Rondo and Parker are much better players than Miller
If we had one of those guys, you would see them playing late. Neither Miller nor Blake has blown anybody away this season, so its logical to go with the best fit, and the players with the most chemistry IMO…
RUDY > MJ
Miller is a notorious slow starter. He's not as good as Rondo or Parker at this stage of his career, certainly.
However, too suggest that there is any comparison between Miller and Blake in terms of ability is crazy.
Miller hasn't had that much time to impress
we know what Blake can do in this offense, but Miller has been forced into the 2nd unit and awkward lineups that aren’t built to help him.
He hasn’t really shown signs of slowing down. Like I say, he’s a slow starter. He needs to pick it up, but he’s easily outplayed Blake so far.
Said it since we signed him
Miller isn’t a good fit here in Nate’s system. Normally, I would expect the system to be adapted to the personnel, but I believe the blazers were top 3 in offensive efficiency last season? Whatever they were, it was really good. To me, you don’t change that system, you find ways to be able to better execute it. Like getting a point guard that can get to the hole AND hit open 3’s.
You are right about Miller though, he has been a square peg in a round hole so far, and that is on Nate. I just don’t know how much I blame Nate for not changing his offensive strategy just to appease a stop gap solution at pg, even if it is a very nice stop gap…
RUDY > MJ
let's state this better
Last night Roy was driving and kicking late in the game… primarily to Blake… which is where all this don’t play Blake hostility came to a head on the main page (not you specifically, Blazerfan in general)… last night with Roy driving, Rudy was on the right, Blake was on the left… if only one shooter is int he game, Roy has to drive to their side in order to set up the threat of a drive and kick… this tips the defense to where he is headed thus giving them the advantage… perhaps the better solution is to have Rudy and Blake switch sides so the kick goes to Rudy rather than Blake
.
.
also, Andre playing 15 feet from the hoop doesn’t give adequate room on the floor for his man to Double roy and not be able to get back in time to cover Andre
.
good point about LMA though
6;56 – Bibby makes jumper and is fouled by Andre (72-69)
6:35 – Andre Miller turnover
6:13 – Joe Johnson hits a 3, tie game
I would have liked to see Roy iso’d up top with Marvin when the Hawks got it within one possession. His jumper was money on his first two attempts from the iso on Marvin in the 4th until he got tired towards the end of the game and OT.
They love to use pop-culture references for new words, it gets them in the news.
There have always been weird words that get invented yearly, but I believe OED used to be more stoic about the additions until more recently. So we hear them in a more official capacity now.
still haven’t had 2 days off. They’ll still be tired. I think Portland will win, but I wouldn’t be surprised at a very close game and if some weird stuff happens (crazy calls, fluke loose ball things/bad luck) Detroit just might take it. Hopefully the crowd is super pumped cause they’ll have to ward off the Simmons negativity waves too.
Yah, Portland is not the 4th best team in the NBA right now.
But it’s good that the fears of defensive armageddon didn’t come to pass. This team has had struggles shooting the ball in the past like they’ve had recently, but that’s been something they can tweak and fix on the run. Having a solid defensive strategy and work ethic was the one thing keeping the Blazers from being contenders in the Western Conference.
I’m still worried about the turnovers though. I imagine some of that will be fixed when the kinks in the offense get worked out, but it is still a bit disconcerting.
Yes! Yes! In the face!
We win that game last night if we get rid of a few ugly turnovers.
And Kobe drives right by him and says, you cant stop me I am the greatest player to ever play the game.
I like the announcers to have some clue about the other team, to talk about the other team (in case I dont know all about them) to add insight and to CORRECTLY describe what happens on the court even if it makes the home team look bad.
Thats what I EXPECT.
by GreatOden'sRaven on Nov 17, 2009 5:49 PM PST up reply actions
that may be so, but they fail spectacularly in all other categories
it is true that they usually attribute opponent runs to bad Laker play rather than crediting the opponent
I don’t know. They don’t bother me.
thats where we differ
I think you have to be balanced. Although their fan intelligence is quite a bit lower than other teams so it might not work there. I think an announcer should call it the way it is… not just shade it because your the home announcer
Assassins creed 2 comes out today
Lookin forward to it. Anyone else?
Travis Outlaw fan from the beginning.
I played the first one
it was enjoyable, not great, but enjoyable
some issues I hope they fixed for the 2nd one:
1. The unskipable (and LONG) cut scenes. Make ’em shorter or let me jump thru them.
2. The button mashing combat. There were some combos, but for the most part you could just do whatever and still win.
3. Less repetitive missions, especially the “evidence gathering” missions.
4. Less game “filler”. At times you had to run or ride a horse for extended periods just to get to the next mission. They spent a lot of time on “finding flags” and other side missions that could have been spent on diversifying the main story.
I love games that are open environment and minimize linear game paths. It’s fun just running on rooftops and jumping down to kill unsuspecting targets. I also love stealth games. So, that’s why I still liked the game even after bashing it that much.
You won.
The Oden/Durant discussion: For a while, we tried to hold out. Maybe this was going to be more of a “Houston drafting Hakeem Olajuwon over Jordan” thing. But, come on, let’s just be real. This is “Blazers draft Bowie over Jordan” all over again. Durant is headed for a perennial All-NBA career. Poor Greg? Does he even make four All-Star games before he calls it quits? He’s looking more like an Erick Dampier (solid big man) than an Andrew Bynum (blossoming stud).
Does it just drop back down?
by GreatOden'sRaven on Nov 17, 2009 8:40 PM PST up reply actions
This is another place where I may fall on the opposite end of most BE readers
See, I’d dump the one-and-done rule.
Oh, and also, if I had the power…
I’d force the NCAA to put a massive set of monitoring in place for recruiting and academic practices, and basically try to cut off the booster system. The people who take the court for a college will have earned the right to be there, both academically and physically.
I’d make sure a degree in basketball would be an acceptable degree if players choose it. Players can take 4 years of learning every detail about the sport, offensive and defensive schemes, coaching, history, all important players, and financial implications of being in the sport, among others. It wouldn’t be required for players, but it would be an attractive option and no worse than a degree in communications.
I’d have the NBA create a real minor league system, where kids can go after high school if they don’t qualify for college. I’d also make sure all people in the minor leagues have classes with retired NBA players about pitfalls of being in the NBA, budgeting your money and saving for retirement, as well as how short the NBA experience is for many players. (Teams can offer more education as they so choose)
As I’ve already mentioned recently, I’d dump guaranteed contracts, which would give people in the minor leagues a fair chance when they earn it, and a larger number of players available for Europe.
Don’t mind me. Just thinking out loud again. I’ll stop before I really start ranting.
I disagree.. your theory sucks.
(Comm major stewing at the jab)
by GreatOden'sRaven on Nov 17, 2009 8:58 PM PST up reply actions
Actually that's my fault
I didn’t mean the major is useless overall, just that it’s useless to a basketball player unless they’re the 1% who get a job in broadcasting.
"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"
2008 Civil War: Oregon 65 - Oregon State 38
I think it should be similar to baseball
If I understand correctly, you can get drafted right out of high school and go to the big leagues if you want to and the situation is right. If you choose to go to college, you have to stay there for 3 years. Freaks like Lebron can make the immediate jump, everyone else can go to school and not screw them over by leaving after 1 year…
RUDY > MJ
I agree with the theory
But the problem is MLB is on board with this, so they have a full minor league system in place for athletes who want to go pro but aren’t ready for the highest level. Unfortunately, David Stern will continue to use the NCAA as a marketing/farm system for the stars of tomorrow, and he might even push the period to two years if he gets his way in the next round of CBA negotiations. Say what you will about Bud Selig, but he is a far less slimy character than Commisar Stern
