A Live Spectator's Perspective ATL vs POR
Half Empty Stadium, Phantom Greg Oden Calls, Corny Announcer, Outrageous Outfits, Sub Par Dancing From the "cheerleaders".... This was the Hawks vs. Blazers game.
I decided to go to this Blazers game LONG ago. I knew i would see them play the hawks this year... since I go to school down here, it is really my only opportunity to see them live in action. It just so happened that today was my birthday, so i figured it'd be the best b-day present I could give myself. I asked my two friends to come along, knowing if we lost I would NEVER hear the end of it....
I text them Greg Oden's stats after every game as proof he is improving. I also yell GREEEEEEEEG OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODEN whenever I see them on campus, leaving everyone wondering what is going on. My persistence and rabid enthusiasm, as only PDX fans know how, for a team as "random" (never been to portland) has turned them both into staunch Oden Haters. It's all good though because one is a Memphis fan (easy pickings there), and the other is a Hawks fan (they passed on like 9383081390 point guards and drafted Marvin WIlliams #2...and Al Horford has gotten NO better since his rookie year...not too hard here either). I digress
...So we get to the game a little bit early, using the student discount (50% off can you believe that?). Once we get in, around 6 30...the stadium is almost EMPTY. I was disappointed. Having watched like every Blazer stream over the past 12 months...I know the crowd there is raucous, lively, and early. As tip off neared i was dumbfounded that the stadium was MAYBE half full.
The Game started and I feared the Blazers would come out flat, resulting in a stiff blowout...The opposite happened and they performed pretty well. They did not appear lead-footed or dreary at all. The defense looked good, so from here I will give me notes on the game...
Blake: He is surprisingly a lot better at D than I anticipated. It was easier to discern this watching him live. He often ended up guarding Joe Johnson, who seldom too advantage of the mismatch. Blake kept him in front and moved his feet. He hit a few shots and played a generally solid game, especially with his 11 assists.
Miller: When he was in the game, the team definitely plays differently. The offense has rhythm, people cut and it is rare that people are ball watching. He is still getting a feel for his teammates, but his impact on the game is undeniable. He got to the free throw line, something no one but Brandon does a great job of doing. He has 6 himself. Sometimes he moved a little fast and hoisted up shots early but it happens. He played some good D man. Johnson was not doing anything, including posting up, while Miller was checking him.
Roy: He played within the flow of the game early, really helping the team. His defense left something to be desired. He was hustling, squaring up, and getting low, especially on Johnson in the 4th, but it wasn't enough. He doesn't move his feet especially quickly to keep people in front. Blake did a much better job of keeping Johnson in front. In fact, Johnson seemed to make a point to take Roy off the dribble, whereas when Blake was on him he frequently toyed with the ball ball and hoisted a contested jumper.
Aldridge: He played a great game really. He took few long two's and seemed focused on attacking through the post. The problem is he has little variation on his post ups. He either backs down and fades or backs down and steps to the middle for the runner. He needs a post progression to make himself more effective. Also, he needs to establish lower post position to be more effective. He's starting so far out that he has to move his man 3-5 feet before he's really in post up range. Other than that, he played solid defense, grabbing board after board. He looked really intent on grabbing anything in his area, a wide area at that.
Oden: He did some really good things early. He scored on the first play of the game, quieting the already silent crowd. Best of all though, I got to rub that ALLL IN THE FACE of my friends...BOW BABY. With that said, he seemed a little rushed. He was aware of the fact he could dominate the hawks big men and really wanted to prove that. He was just trying to do too much at once. When he has been effective he has methodically checked down the progressions of his post moves. This was not the case tonight, though he was effective, he went to a LA like step-through multiple times. He should have gone to the jump hook, drop step, or spin baseline more. He would have been more effective. On defense he did a great job of moving his feet. He was really good at this in the first half. The Team was really looking for him early and often and he produced 11 pts. A lot of the things defenders were doing he would have been called for a foul....so frustrating. Even my friends agreed the refs just called him for things that he had nothing to do with... There was definitely a loose ball foul in the 2nd half where he had already started back up-court when the whistle blew. He also made a great play on josh smith ( I believe) which SHOULD have been a charge but was a no call...He did commit some fouls, not too many silly ones but the phantom calls he gets really prevents him from dominating that side of the ball. He just plays tentatively. Blazers should DEFINITELY go to the league and complain PUBLICLY.
Webster: He didn't play much, not much to say here. He didn't play with the same tenacity as I have come to expect this year. When he attacked the basket he passed instead of looking to ruin someone's career as he has been doing lately. He played defense and ran the floor, thats about all I can say....Oh and they put him and Bayless on the Kiss Kam....needless to say he moved down a seat.
Fernandez: WOW... What a game from Rudy. It really looked like HE was back. I don't think I can say he did anything wrong. He played with a fire that reminds me of last year. His shooting touch was great and he attacked the basket a few times. His movement on offense had the same effect off ball as Miller's did with it. He had a trillion steals and could have a had 1 or 2 more. He played some really good pressure D at times. He has definitely improved in this category form last year. He was probably our most effective 1 v 1 defender tonight. I don't know what else I can say except WHAT A SHOT...WOW. My hope were all but dashed when he hit that...Kudos Rodolfo.
Bayless: Should have gotten more PT. He was aggressive and has played well recently...and really could have helped give some people some rest so they would have been fresher at the end. He was apparently only brought in to help get Jeff Teague to stop pressuring full court.
Howard: HE CAN STILL DUNK Y'ALL. Solid play tonight.
McMillan: Let the run where ATL caught up go on too long. He was about 2-3 possessions late with the timeout. Blake played well...really well...BUT 40 FRIGGEN MINUTES HONESTLY? Nate dropped the ball with the substitutions. Webster should have played more and so should have Bayless. We need new plays, too much Iso. On the bright side, Our defense is pretty good. The rotations were there. The Zone they used looked nearly impenetrable. It would would if Greg wasn't so scared of being called for a foul in he breaths though. That was the only weak link, when the ball rotated back to his corner and he refused to close out any more than 8 feet.
General notes: Our offense looked GREAT until the 4th quarter when Roy wanted to take over. Everyone stopped moving. This is where we lost the game. Roy tried to break down his man but since no one was moving, they all just watched him. It made it impossible to get into the lane and it forced him to launch jumper after jumper. It wasn't that bad because Marvin Williams isn't stopping him...I don't care WHOSE talking. Bu t the lack of motion made it too easy to stop our offense. Then came the double teams and no one else was in a position/ready to help him. The 4th quarter, give it to roy, offense needs to be revamped.
The reason that the Hawks kept scoring is that they had a series of penetrators who attacked the defense. ALSO they had constant motion, keeping the Blazers defense shifting. It hid deficiencies of some players like Marvin Williams who has similar range to Miller. If we had motion like that, we would have won that game. Even when they posted up, people moved off ball. The Blazers just clear out. It leaves the post player with no option but TO shoot. Its not a part of the offense, it BECOMES the offense. The team seems to have lost touch with some basic offensive principles. If we get back to those, the offense will DEFINITELY come back.
Other than that...My experience was great until we lost. I had to leave with about a minute left because it was disappointing. But I felt relieved because we hung with, outplayed, and SHOULD HAVE beaten the best team in the east, at their house. I enjoyed myself watching my favorite team play. It's something I'll always remember, as I did the last time I saw them play (my hs coaches took me and my co-captain to seem them play in Sacramento during the preseason...we sat courtside...AMAZING...)
Anyways.....GREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEG OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN

Great recap.
You hit on a bunch of things I also thought while watching the game … particularly that our offense looked great until the 4th quarter.
"These are dreams that we have." --Rudolfo Fernandez
I disagree that our offense looked great until the 4th
In the 3rd quarter, Atlanta couldn’t score and we had chances to build the lead but failed. We didn’t go to the Roy isos until Atlanta had basically come all the way back. The first two Roy isos led to made jump shots over Williams. Our offense was not great down the stretch, but the idea that it was humming until we started clearing out for Roy is not accurate. We were very sloppy with the ball the whole game and little was working. I think we should have gone to the Roy-centric offense earlier. I also think Roy himself needed to attack the basket more. We are turning the ball over way more that last year. Its an issue.
Hmmm
I do disagree, but thats apparent since I said that earlier. When we went Roy-centric it was hard to see him getting in the lane. I was like handing the ball off to a running back and the blockers just moving to the side (gridiron gang anyone?). There were white shirts wherever he went. You are right, the offense was not great in the 3rd. But it was MUCH better in the 1st half when a myriad of players were involved with the scoring. The later in the game it got the more the ball went to roy and the more predictable we became.
They did get some wide open shots...
but they did not hit them. Roy drew those defenders and kicked to open players, they just could not convert those opportunities into baskets. The one thing I would have liked to have seen was Miller on the block against Bibby. Maybe next game. (not against Bibby but you know what I mean.)
PTB Liberation Day - 2/10/04
good point
Miller could have definitely been on the block more.
Excellent observations
Our 1st quarter offense was some of the best ive seen all year. I disagree with Nate’s strategy of playing Przy in the 1st half and Oden in the 2nd regardless of situation, as evidenced by Oden’s 14 straight minutes to finish the game tonight. No answer to Josh Smith’s defensive/rebounding instincts and freakish leaping. Losing all officiating coin flips in the closing stretches of the game. Agreed that our stagnant, careless offense during late 3rd/early 4th cost us the game more than anything else
Nice writeup

Yeah what's up the empty seats
Atl has a good team.
The league really needs to consider contracting…all these empty arenas do not reflect well.
Blazer Fan
welcome to atlanta sports
i went to school in atlanta from ’03 – ’07 and never saw a full stadium, braves or hawks. Falcons game are a little better, and the thrashers are empty.
Good news is tickets are EXTREMELY cheap, i saw hawks games for 5 bucks, braves games for 3 bucks (with hot dog and drink), and falcons games for 25.
their fan base isnt the best at supporting teams, i think its complacency from the years of playoffs for the braves.
Rip City Baby...People have no idea what is coming.

Plus Atlanta is made up of a bunch of transplants
It’s hard to find a true blue Atlanta fan of any sport. Now college football is another story.

I went to the game as well, looks like we saw things in the same light
Had a nice photo op with Barrett and my family. Truly nice. Exchanged pleasantries with Kevin Pritchard, Antonio Harvey and Dennis Scott.
Impressions from the game. Our defense is improved. While guards still make it past the first line of defense, more often than not our bigs (mostly Oden) are covering their backs and altering shots or just making it miserable for the other team. That being said, Atlanta did have some open threes that they weren’t hitting. For three quarters this was good enough.
Offensively, we were decent for the first three quarters as well. Not great, but considering how I thought we would be on the last game of the road trip, better than expected. We attempted to go inside and were somewhat successful. Then we had a lull at the start of the fourth which allowed Altanta to gain confidence and then it turned into a one on one contest between Roy and Johnson. Only a miraculous shot from Rudy saved our bacon for an extra five minutes. In the OT nice play by Oden on offense and then everything else not so good save for some late threes by Rudy.
The crowd in Atlanta was ridiculous. If there were 5000 people there I would be amazed. The piped in music was hideous and they were begging the fans to get loud. Truly a sad commentary on Atlanta sports fans. The Hawks are good!
Individual observations
Greg – you could tell he was a bit ragged today. He didn’t have this years pep, was a nervous nelly everytime he touched the ball and just tried to force too much. That being said, he still looks better offensively then at any time last year and he does make a difference on defense. He has a loooooonnnggg ways to go, but I think he will get there. It may take another year or two.
Brandon – he looked a bit lost. He is fumbling the ball more than I have ever seen him and isn’t nearly as confident as before. He had a nice stretch when Atlanta tied the game in the fourth, but in overtime he seemed to regress. Not that impressed with his defense, but no doubt he is still our best player.
Blake – Offense we run is perfect for him. He is good at spacing, made some nice passes, but he has to hit those shots and not pound the ball so much wasting the shot clock. If he hits one or two of those shots we win the game.
Aldridge – missed some rebounds that he should have had. Nice offensive game/
Rudy – played with energy, hit most of his shots, need more of this.
Miller – runs the offense, changes things up, couldn’t figure out why he wasn’t in at the end.
Webster – nice jam, but really needs to be more confident in his jump shot. Puzzles me. He should take notes from Travis on the one dribble, stop and pop. He tries to force things and he doesn’t yet have good enough handles to make that happen.
Joel – he was pretty nonexistent from my viewpoint tonight, except for one nice block.
Anyway I was pretty pleased with our play and it took Joe Johnson just shooting the lights out for us to lose. We took a good team to overtime, really should have won, but I can’t fault the effort, just the result

we led 72-62 (by 10) with 8:19 to go after the Howard 3 point play
at that point, the wheels came off the bus, especially on offense. They scored 10 straight points, and during that stretch I don’t think we took even ONE good shot. We either turned it over or forced up a late bad shot agaisnt the shot clock.
Still not liking Nate’s rotation right now. Blake shouldn’t be playing 40 minutes. He’s very effective in 25-30, but tires in more than that, which I think factors into his not making shots late. We also faltered during both halves when we went to the lineup that didn’t have any of our big 3 in. I’d like to see a few tweaks:
Start Miller, Rudy, Roy, LMA, Oden
around 6 minutes in, bring in Joel and Blake for Miller and Oden (Blake,Rudy,Roy,LMA,Joel)
Late 1st: Martell for Roy (Blake,Rudy,Martell,LMA,Joel)
between quarters: Bayless for Rudy (Blake,Bayless,Martell,LMA,Joel)
early 2nd: Howard for LMA, Roy for Bayless (Blake,Roy,Martell,Howard,Joel)
Mid 2nd: Greg for Joel, Miller for Blake (Miller,Roy,Martell,Howard,Greg)
late 2nd: Rudy for Martell, LMA for Howard (Miller,Roy,Rudy,LMA,Greg)
By half, this breaks down to roughly:
Oden 14, Przy 10
LMA 18, Howard 6
Rudy 16, Webster 10
Roy 18, Bayless 4
Miller 12, Blake 12
How did you guys win that?
"We scored enough points. We scored 107, they scored 105.
-Nate McMillan Postgame, 3/4/2009
SPOT ON
With Nate Mac waiting so long to call a time out in the 3rd. It seemed like there were about 5 possessions EACH with TOs or just generally sloppy play. I could not believe either coach didnt call a timeout. ESPECIALLY NATE! HELLO!? You’re winning a tough road game and your team is starting to look like the Grizz! Calm them down, you fool!
They need to rebound better out of that zone.
That was the crutch of the game
Atlanta couldnt do anything but miss and tip against that zone.
Agreed.
Keep your expectations low and you won't be disappointed.
Nice post kajuayn--
I always like these road-game experiences. May I ask, how are you a blazer fan all the way down there if you have no ties to Portland?
And, really? 50%off student discount and the place was still empty……
I am an oasis of Blazer fandom in a bleak desert of Laker fans.
Were are the individual observations of the referees ?
how did your friends react to the dishonest officiating in the end of the game ?
Yea
I missed some calls. Like the one at the end where we go the balll…suddenly ATL had it back? WTF?
They agreed Greg was called for some egregious fouls that simply were not fouls.
They also agreed that he drew a charge on Smith in the lane once…it was a no call.
GREEEEEEEEEEEEEEG OOOOOOOOOOOOOODEEEEEEEEEN
kajuayn, great write up!
You really mean you’ve never been to Portland? Man, you gotta come here! It’s a great town for young people. Maybe after graduation? Watch the Blazers and have yourself an adventure! Anyway, thanks for your post. I love it.
rec’d!

Yea, never been! It's awful.
I need to. I have been to Seattle since one of my Uncles is an assistant with Coach Romar. Other than that….nothing further north than Mendecino in Cali.
