david west/ chris bosh/chris paul

We need to go after one of these 3 guys in the season. I think most of us could agree that we are one good player away from complete domination of most  NBA teams.

Rudy, outlaw, blake, howard, webster all are people could get rid of. You know david west would come to Portland and i think its our best bet. Chris Bosh  would of course be perfect for us. He can't be to happy in Toronto. I am not sure how we could land him but it is possible. Aldridge bosh combo would be beast mode to the max.

Chris Paul  wants out of New Orleans. GRAB HIM NOW.

All we have to do is get to the 2nd or 3rd round  int he playoffs to prove ourselves and these star players would be more then happy at joining us to get a ring.

Warmer

I still want to see what Travis can do. He was just starting to fulfill his potential when this cursed injury struck him down.

I don’t see why we should have to give up any assets.

by shralpster on Nov 16, 2009 12:59 PM PST up reply actions

But Travis is injured. He might be out for a year.

Get serious, shralpster, you don’t really think the Cavs would give us LeBron for an
injured Travis do you?

Sorry blazermania92983, I don’t mean to turn this into a LeBron thread, but you have to admit that with Nic and Travis out for a while and Martell and Rudy not playing that great, we could use someone like LeBron at small forward. If not him, how about Martell for Kevin Durant?

West is a two-time All-Star.
LaMarcus is not.

We should get West and Bosh and play them in the frontline with Aldridge and Oden. No one could beat us.

I give you credit

for naming who you want to trade for (most do not even go that far). But, what does your trade actually look like? Who or what are you trading away and is the trade realistic? Travis for Chris Bosh is just not going to work.

The best players only try to, "do it all," themselves when it is a playoff necessity or, on occasion, to put on a show. There is no need to belabor the point!

All players are role players, Philthy. Different roles, that's all.

Look at the math: If Rudy, Travis, and Blake are all worth a 3, and our pick is worth a 1, that’s a 10. Chris Paul is a 10, right? 10=10

This is wise, IMO.

What makes a great team is not your 4th and 5th best player, it is your first, second and third best.

Bosh could be an upgrade over Aldridge, and but that would create redundancy at that position unless we traded Aldridge. I would be fine with that if we got something useful back (like a future #1 pick, for one of the guys you named in addition to Aldridge, for example.)

I do disagree on David West. I think Aldridge is a better all around player, and his jump shot is only going to improve over the years. David West looks great scoring the ball, but he is undersized and does not have the same all around skill set that Aldridge has.

I like your idea for getting Chris Paul. Do you think we could pull-off a three-team deal for him and LeBron? I know you don’t want LeBron but I’ve heard he is pretty good. Besides, who cares whether the Blazers are Roy’s or LeBron’s team, as long as we’re beating other teams like a flock of rented mules.

Now that you mention it. Rather than go through all the trouble to get Paul or Bosh to Portland

I'm all for thinking big

and in the current economic climate I’m sure we’ll see some economically motivated deals that are truly head scratchers, but there is no way Portland is landing an all star (think Bosh type players) without giving up at least LMA, maybe LMA + Rudy, Batum, Bayless, Webster, or a combo of those. As to superstars, NO wouldn’t even pick up the phone unless it was Roy and extra. KP is good, but he’s not that good – to get value, you need to give it.

Repost

New Orleans wouldn’t trade Chris Paul, maybe not even if Brandon was involved. Brandon has what is called a Poison Pill Provision after signing his contract extension for 2010, making it nearly impossible to trade him

Salary cap guru Larry Coon explains:

If a team trades an extended rookie between the date his extension is signed and the date it takes effect, his "trade value" for the receiving team is the average of the salaries in the last year of the scale contract and each year of the extension. This is called the poison pill provision. The sending team uses the player’s actual salary when calculating their outgoing salary. They use the current-year maximum salary in place of the (unknown) maximum salary for a future season, if necessary.

It is designed to make trading a player who just got extended very hard to not screw around with players coming off their rookie contracts and signing their next deal, so it fulfills its purpose and the name is fitting. Other teams would definitely have to be involved to give everyone a deal that makes sense. Try it out with the ESPN or RealGM trade machines.

I am on record stating that (the owner’s family of) New Orleans will rather sell the team or move it to a city where it can be more profitable (it was profitable last season) before trading Chris Paul. I stand to that. To give people a perspective: The fans of about every team lust after Chris Paul. Even teams that have great young point guards. Bulls fans discussed giving up Derrick Rose in a deal in the last days. Brandon Roy would undoubtedly be an interesting competitive offer, but it still would be unlikely to happen. Paul is more well-known for national/international marketing purposes, arguably the best point guard currently in the game, and at least on Roy’s level of importance for his team. We had our chance to draft him (or Deron Williams), and traded down largely because people in the organization thought Sebastian Telfair was the golden ticket at point guard. D’oh! That was it. That chance won’t come back until much much later in Paul’s career. If ever.

Furthermore, Paul is in the first year of his already started new contract in what is called Base Year Compensation, making matters even more difficult. There sure could be a trade constructed in theory (paging Tom Penn), but if it makes sense to all involve parties is very questionable. Here is a deal that might work in theory (it currently doesn’t in practice before an involved team would renounce some rights). And it’s not pretty:

New Orleans out: Chris Paul, Peja Stojakovich/Mo Peterson
New Orleans in: Brandon Roy, Thabo Sefolosha, first round draft pick from Portland

Portland out: Brandon Roy, Joel Przybilla
Portland in: Chris Paul, rights to e.g. Yotam Halperin (no money value, just has to be something)

OKC out: Thabo Sefolosha who also has a PPP (alternatively Kyle Weaver), rights to Yotam Halperin
OKC in: Joel Prybilla (the big man they need), Peja Stojakovich’s bad deal (alternatively Mo Peterson’s deal, but that’s not as attractive to Nola since it’s only half the money), $3 million cash from Portland, first round draft pick from Portland

As far as I can see this deal currently works for New Orleans and Portland with PPP and BYC, but for Oklahoma only if they would waive old free agent rights they hold that currently block their cap space (which they would then have instantly). Depending on the deal 1 or 2 out of Danny Fortson $9,895,485 cap hold; Malik Rose $11,471,250; Robert Swift $7,158,262. Then it should work. Would they do it instead of saving the money they would have to give Peja instead of going after a young FA? Doubtful even though they surely could use Joel.

As for the rest: David West isn’t better than LaMarcus, and Chris Bosh is more expensive and not coming here either.

So what you're saying is that it is possible.

Now just figure out how to do it so that we keep Roy, LaMarcus, and Oden, and also get David West and Chris Bosh. Don’t laugh, remember that Paul and Bosh want to come to Portland. New Orleans and Boshton don’t want those guys to force a trade like Steve Jackson did.

Portland should trade Miller+Blake for Paul, Outlaw+Rudy for LeBron, Juwan for Bosh and Joel for Dwight Howard

PG- Paul/Bayless
SG- Roy/Webster
SF- James/Batum
PF- Bosh/Aldridge
C- Howard/Oden

Of course we’d probably have to first put up money for his bail, seeing as he’s currently in jail. But hey, that’s a minor obstacle for so worthy a task.

by Rick C in Tigard on Nov 16, 2009 3:33 PM PST reply actions

u guys are overreacting

Just because someone is a star does not mean they will never get traded. New Orleans is losing money every; theyre now losing games every; theyre losing chris paul when his contract his up.

these are facts. the idea of chris paul being traded might sound crazy but actually is a real possibility. and if he should be made available, portland should do EVERYTHING it can to get him.

so i dont think ridiculing blazermania by saying “oh, we’ll just get lebron and dwight too because we want them” is warranted. in fact, i find it downright childish and insulting to the poster, as if he didnt know the magnitude of such a trade. he knows, i know, everyone will know when Paul is out of New Orleans.

CP3 hates losing. the man loathes it. and his frustration is mounting, especially given the season theyre going to have and the injury he currently has. so while New Orleans dealing him might not seem realistic, it actually is. its just not probable. but nothing is when it comes to trading stars…even tho it DOES HAPPEN.

and if it does happen…………………………………..thats like at least 4-6 straight rings. imagine him throwing up lops to LMA and Oden (yes hes much more capable than Miller even tho Andre is good at it).

again, im not sayin its goin down tomorrow, im just sayin it is most certainly possible. and not like raining pianos possible. it wouldnt surprise me one bit. now, them trading him to a western conference team, i dont know. at least they arent in the same division.

by saveourbluths on Nov 16, 2009 3:39 PM PST reply actions   1 recs

I don't think anyone disagrees with the idea....

Kareem was traded for example; CP3 is no Kareem, he appears to me to be moody and fragile. I do have to agree – it would be fun to try and win with him though.

You can observe a lot just by watching.
