Roy's Nickname: New Ideas + Poll
I know I'm not the only one to spend at least a cumulative 45 minutes (minimum) per week trying to come up with a better nickname for Brandon Roy. I can't explain the obsession... many of the all-time greats are best known by their given names. Sure there's "Air", "King James" and "The Glide" but we usually just go with "Lebron", "Jordan" and "Clyde" (or "Drexler"). Bird and Kareem don't need anything added. But somehow, Brandon Roy is one that demands not just one moniker but two or three, maybe more. The ones he already has never seem like enough, so I've decided to try at least to help him on his way.
I'd make it a FanShot but this topic is never sufficient without a poll. I'll list the two common ones, plus the silly snake name he thought he might name himself. And two more I think make a lot of sense. Hopefully I'm not the first to think of these because they should be kind of obvious to be good nicknames. My first suggestion is "The Man". I suspect, without cause, that there may be hundreds of you who already use this name for him. It has some negative class/race connotations but (a) those connotations are from the 60's/70's, and "The Man" has evolved to bigger and better things, (b) with the contract he just signed, I'm not too concerned about class connotations and (c) he gets it done.
My second suggestion is a pretty cool nickname which, as far as I can tell, isn't owned by any big sports stars outside of wrestling. It's a bit scary, ominous, due in no small part to Spiderman 3 and to Metallica, and it fits Brandon's offense perfectly. EDIT: It doesn't sound tough at first, it lulls you into feeling safe, again, like Brandon's offense, but before you know it the truth hits. Also, they could blast the Metallica during his intro.

Mr. Sandman
49% of me wanted to vote for The Natural as I believe that’s the one with the best chance of sticking, but I liked the Sandman.
... now I can't get this flippin' song out of my head...
Mr. Sandman, give me a three
Drive in the lane and cause havoc on D
A work of art is your crossover
Can’t count him out till the game clock’s over
Sandman, in crimson and black
Broken ankles when you go on attack
A buzzer beater would be sweet
Mr. Sandman give me a three

The Natural is such an awesome nickname. I wish it would stick easier. Wheels was calling him that all the time last season.
Still does
As far as I know. It seems a little off still. Is it really based on the movie, with Roy Hobbs : Brandon Roy? I must have that wrong because it’s such a stretch. It’s not like he was a 40 year old rookie who breaks the equipment. Now for Greg that would be appropriate.

Thats the problem
The nickname fits him as a definition. His game just looks like it comes so naturally to him. Improvement seems only a matter of time, not a question of ‘if’. If it weren’t for the movie, I think the name would have taken off a long time ago.
how about we drop the attempts at cheesy nicknames...
and just call him “Roy”? Or towards the end of the 4th quarter in a tight game, “ROY!!!!!!!”?
AFAIK, no one else in the league has his name. It’s not like Brady, Peyton, Federer, Favre, Montana, Bird, Wilt, Jordan, Clyde, etc, needed their fans to come up with something goofy.
Of all those I agree that “The Natural” is the least painful, but Portland already has Randy “The Natural” Couture…
