Quick: Martell Webster Endorses LeBron's Plan to Retire 23
----------------------------
Jason Quick notes...
----------------------------
Martell Webster, who changed his uniform number this season to 23, said he endorses LeBron James' campaign for the NBA to retire No. 23 in honor of Michael Jordan. The Cleveland star said he will change his number to 6 next season in honor of Jordan. Webster said he would gladly change, but he said he would not go back to his original number, 8. ...
----------------------------
Dwight Jaynes pretty much eviscerated the idea earlier Friday.
----------------------------
It may be the most ridiculous idea I’ve ever heard of. Especially for teams that Jordan beat or publicly scorned — like Portland. Not only did Jordan hand the Blazers a loss in the NBA Finals, he has on a few occasions talked about how lucky he was never to have played here.

Exactly, 42 deserves to be retired because of Jackie Robinson
But Jordan, deserves nothing more than he has already gotten.

LeBron, thanks but no thanks. Where did this come from?
Of all the causes someone in James’ position could focus attention to. Pathetic.

I, too, am rather baffled
about all this deification of Jordan.
I mean the guy just started his career, fergawdsake. And he hasn’t even been able to wrest the Clippers - the Clippers! - starting center job away from Chris Kaman.
I say the league should wait another year or two before giving any serious consideration to retiring his number.

Instead of retiring #23
which is an idea I find offensive for everyone but the Bulls, let’s honor him by retiring the number of points he scored in his career, which leads everyone in history except for Karl Malone and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. I hereby declare that no NBA player shall ever wear the number 32292 again.
I think we can keep it informal in most arenas. No need to hang a jersey. We’ll just take a moment of silence to commemorate the moment now. There, done. Charlotte next, right?

What's Martell going to say?
Can you imagine the flack he gets if LeBron does this and a role player for Portland says no?
There are only two ways to fight this. First, for a star to say, “That’s dumb, this is the number I’ve always worn, and I’m going to wear it.” Alternatively, for team management or the league office to say, “Um, no. If the league retires a number, then the league will decide, and you can’t change your number just because some guy in Cleveland ran his mouth off.”

A few things
- Did LeBron actually demand that nobody wears #23 from here on out, or did he just say he wouldn’t continue to wear it and all the sports media pundits just jumped onto it “well, he’s the only great player to still wear it, so why not retire it for everyone?”
- He wants to honor MJ by not wearing #23, but honor Dr. J by wearing #6. Mhm, okay, nice logic. Apart from Erving wearing #32 for much of his career.
- If the Blazers retire Jordan’s #23, the Bulls should retire Bowie’s #31. Makes no sense? Exactly
But slowly things happen that they cannot help and the Blazers Fellowship of the Ring begins to break apart

as far as I can tell:
THIS was the full quote from LeBron:
He can’t get the logo [Hall of Famer Jerry West’s silhouette adorns the NBA’s logo], and if he can’t, something has to be done. I feel like no NBA player should wear 23. I’m starting a petition, and I’ve got to get everyone in the NBA to sign it. Now, if I’m not going to wear No. 23, then nobody else should be able to wear it.

Lets also retire the numbers he wore in minor league baseball, the number he came back wearing in the NBA, the Chicago Bulls (out of respect, they must retired and the franchise move to North Carolina). Every gold course he ever lost money betting at must have a Jordan Tee made of pure gold reserved only for His use. And the number he wears on his Hanes drawers.

For one thing, it’s not everyone’s opinion Jordan was the greatest player of all time (it’s certainly not mine). For another he was/is a first class jerk, and a whiner and a pouter if he didn’t get his way. And have we forgotten his first class hall of fame acceptance speech?
Trade Martell. We need players with a spine. I’d suggest Cleveland for his destination; there he could ask LeBron for a free pair of his shoes on a daily basis and together they could swoon over the fact that there are no #23’s in sight.

Jordan was a good player and all.
But it’s not like he broke some historic barrier like, say, Jackie Robinson. If we were to retire Earl Lloyd’s number 11, I don’t see how that would be a problem. I’ve got to agree with Jaynes on this one.

the number will be retired, but unofficially
First of all, of course I don’t think the number should be hung in the rafters of opposing arenas such as the Rose Garden, MSG, Boston Garden etc. That’s a foolish idea.
Eventually I think he will be on the logo. You may complain, but do you think Jerry West’s opponents like seeing him on there? To the winners go the spoils.
However, this is a done deal, in unofficial ways. Players will simply stop wearing it, and anyone who wears it will be putting a big target on their chest. The NBA players are, among other things, a social peer group.
The point of this is that you haters need to back up off of Martell. You want him to ostracize himself among NBA players to satisfy your homeristic haterism from a generation ago? Please.
Two more items. Attacking Jordan’s personality and private life is pathetic and irrelevant. Most people, famous or otherwise, are deeply flawed. Many of MJ’s personality “flaws” are directly related to the drive to achieve psychological dominance over all opponents which was the defining feature of his game. Anyway, unless you’re an angel, such attacks are probably very hypocritical, and certainly irrelevant to the discussion.
Lastly: was he the greatest? Everyone whose opinion matters says so, specifically his opponents. The only disagreements I’ve ever heard are from 1) fans of teams he beat and 2) proponents of current pretenders to the throne (mostly in the pathetic & indeed comical Kobe camp). This argument has been done to death so I won’t even go there, and it has been settled in the minds of everyone but the above two camps.
No one will ever convince you if you’re one of those old homers. That’s fine. Just know that espousing that opinion in public makes you look silly, like being a Flat Earther. It’s fine, even kind of cute, a nice sign of your loyalty to the Blazers. I respect that, I guess. But it’s not a serious topic of debate anymore.

Sorry that you couldn't tell
I was joking about trading Martell. Still I’d like to see some spine from him.
Let’s see …. the gambling addiction … that was related to his drive to be the best too I guess, right? And referring to his teammates as his supporting cast too I’ll bet. Same with his hall of fame speech (I don’t think there has ever been another like it).
Talk of homers. I think I understand your screen name — MrCompletely a Jordan homer. Bulls fan too I’ll bet.

What, you mean the earth ISN'T flat?
I MrCompletely disagree.
Nice way to frame the argument, BTW: if you’re a fan of a team he beat (which would be everybody, right?) then your argument against me doesn’t matter.
I don’t know who your sources are, or what you’re reading, but this type of cross-generational cross-positional, “who’s the greatest” argument will NEVER be anything remotely closs to “settled”…
If I needed one score, would I put the ball in MJ’s hands? Sure, he’s great… But if I had to pick a MrUnstoppable? That would be Wilt… But if I were to start a franchise? There’s several players I’d pick first.
1. Bill Russell. No athlete in any sport has come close to Russ’ total domination of championships. There’s a reason his name is on the Playoff MVP trophy. His Oden-like defensive presence, ability to block shots into the hands of the point guard to start the break, and his complete domination of Wilt in games that matter make Russ my #1 pick in the all-time NBA fantasy team.
2. Wilt. More physically imposing than any player in history, including Shaq. Would still dominate most centers in this league as a 60-year old. Only Russell’s defensive genius (and better supporting cast) stopped Wilt from dominating the league. (not to mention the 20,000 women – now there is a marketing juggernaut)… His career averages: 30.1 points, 22.9 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and probably (they didn’t count the stat at the time) 3-4 blocks… One YEAR he AVERAGED 50.4 and 35.7 – AVERAGED!
3. Larry Joe Bird. 24/10/6 career averages don’t begin to tell the story. He, Magic and MJ demonstrated the greatest will to win I’ve ever seen. Larry was the most clutch shooter, and the best all-around player I’ve ever seen. Injuries cut short a truly brilliant career.
4. Magic. The Celtics always let MJ get his (including I think 60 in one playoff game I attended – MJ lost in OT, BTW), and focused on stopping everybody else. You couldn’t do that with Magic. You just couldn’t double-team him. Nobody (Except maybe Cousy) led a fast break any better. If you’re looking to build a dominant TEAM – I’d pick a 6’9" point guard before a shooter. IT’s like the Durant/Oden argument – you can always find a guy to put it in the hole… you can’t always find a player so dominant at his poisition, and so integral to team success as Magic (same argument applies to Russ).
Now, I might slot MJ in right about here (career averages 30/5/6), but arguments can be made for Jerry West (he’s on the logo for a reason – 27/7/6) Oscar Robertson (career averages: 25.7, 7.5, 9.5.). Kareem (averaged 24 and 11 over a two decade long career!), and even one of my favorites Bob Cousy, who revolutionized the sport and invented the modern point guard (career averages of 18/7/ with 5 rebounds as a 6’1 guard – oh, and 13 NBA championships – scoreboard, MJ) ….
In short, BS on LeBron, and BS on MJ!

When you honor someone league wide, it is exactly that, an Honor. It kind of helps if the person you are honoring is you know, honorable. Personality goes a long way. I’m a life long Reds fan and even I am not clamoring for Pete Rose to get formally honored in any way. Living heroes have a way of letting you down by showing that they are human like everyone else.
Lastly: was he the greatest? Everyone whose opinion matters says so, specifically his opponents. Every generation has their own version of the greatest ever. Mikan was the greatest ever, Oscar was the greatest ever, Wilt was the greatest ever, West was the greatest ever, Russell was the greatest ever, Bird and Magic were the combo greatest ever…
In twenty years there will be a new greatest ever. Jordan will be a footnote just like everybody else.
Retiring a number league wide should require a little more than scoring a lot of points, cheating on your wife, accruing enough gambling debts to be kicked out of the league for a year, winning 3 less championships than another “greatest player ever”, and punching your teammates in the face.

Hello
Two more items. Attacking Jordan’s personality and private life is pathetic and irrelevant.
Private life? Most of the non-basketball comments here have to do with his public life.
That HOF acceptance speech? That was, like, you know, public. Can’t get much more public.
If you want to be honored, you should respect those you want to honor you. He didn’t treat that ceremony with respect. He didn’t treat his rivals with respect. He didn’t even treat the game with respect all the time, when it comes to the gambling thing.
And no, it isn’t only homers who debate whether he’s the greatest.
Chamberlain was a greater scorer.
Kareem dominated the game as completely, and was a dominant force for longer.
Russell won more championships.
Over five years, Oscar Robertson averaged double figures in assists and rebounds and 30 points per game.
LeBron didn’t even see Oscar or Russell or Chamberlain or possibly even Kareem play the game. A lot of MJ’s opponents didn’t see Oscar or Russell or Chamberlain play, either. They were simply babes in arms when Chamberlain retired.
Was MJ the greatest of all time? Well, certainly a strong case can be made for it. No question about that. But this isn’t such a slam dunk as you claim, and throwing insults at people who disagree with you is pretty classless. But then, since we’re on a thread about Michael Jordan, maybe that’s fitting.

and please, call it what it is
is his impact on the game. Not that he was Jackie Robinson. That’s a baseball thing and irrelevant here. Who cares about baseball anyway? Is that even a sport anymore?
The NBA is a massive and very successful global business because of Michael Jordan. Period. End of story. You may not like it, you may hate it, but if you deny it, you don’t know your history. So a lot of that had to do with marketing – well, welcome to the grown up world that the rest of us live in.
That’s what it’s about. He transformed the game from a regional sport that only got attention in the cities that had teams into a global juggernaut.
Let’s please at least talk about what the actual subject is.

Martell lost some in my book there.
Honoring Jordan our enemy?
Doing what Lebron says? Especially when Lebron takes a slice at West while doing it?
Jordan rode the media coattails of Bird/Johnson. He was their successor.
He was great at a lot of things, but definitely not even the greatest basketball player in the NBA ever.

I'm in the minority here
I’m all for it. Jordan transcended the game. Gretzky has his number retired across the NHL. Jordan is the clear-cut greatest of all time (it’s true…I’m one of the few spurned Portlanders that can admit it). Everyone who wears 23 is just wearing it because of Jordan (Lebron and Webster admitted as much). Yeah, retire it across the NBA. We don’t need to hang a Jordan jersey, just don’t have anyone wear it.

Wasn't like Gretzky did not have private controversy with gambling
Gretzky was the first thing I thought of when I read this. After thinking briefly, I think from a stat line thing Gretzky was a dominate player, Jordon doesn’t have complete domination in almost every offensive stat category. Much easier to retire the number league wide in that instance. Jordan has more peers(as so many have said) that have some stat or benchmark above his, Gretzky has few even close, or close in the forseeable future.
For me this whole conversation is silly in it’s own right. I don’t care either way, and I think its a bit premature to be thinking about doing it. However I am blown away by all these comments, slightly depressing really, so many arguements centering around Jordan beating Portland, or not liking Portland. What? C’mon I have heard better conversation out of this group of BErs. If someone’s number gets retired in any sport it’s shouldn’t be based upon what teams they beat and what cities they didn’t enjoy. What did they bring to the game, put prejudice aside.
All that said, I reiterate I don’t really care either way, I think it would be foolish to hang the jersey in any arena, and I’m not sure he deserves a retired number league wide anyway. Just felt I needed to chime in because I read 85 comments waiting to hear something that would make me care one way or the other and all I read is “he beat Portland” “Never he hates Portland” “Losing respect for Martell because he has an opinion and spoke it” If you guys can’t muster a better support(and I have seen more logical conversation here) then the jersey is going to be waving in the RG by the Detriot game.

This is the dumbest idea ever.
I hate Michael Jordan. If I see his jersey in the RG, I will vomit.

Does anyone watch 30 Rock?
There was a moment this week that would be exactly like us retiring Jordan’s jersey: They were all standing around waiting for the new cast member to arrive when Lutz (the pathetic writer) walked in and the hot intern Cerie looked disappointed and asked, “Is that the new cast member?” He then said “I’m Lutz. I gave you that car I won.” If we retired Jordan’s number we’d be like the guy giving gifts to a hot girl who doesn’t even think about him.
Your confusing thesis has captured my attention. Tell me more.

MJ was an amazing athlete & great competitor
He also was allowed to palm the ball so that Mr. Stern would have his marketing superstar. I know the MJ fans will be all over me for this but go back & watch MJ tapes it is comical! I love basketball & enjoyed watching Magic, Larry & yes MJ but no number has ever been retired by the league & that is how it should stay. Leave that to the individual teams.

It’s a great idea, and the players should voluntarily do this.
As for Dwight Jaynes, I call BS> Jordan loved Chicago, and he indicated that he was happy he didn’t get drafted by Portland because he was happy where he ended up. That’s hell and gone from ripping Portland. Unless you’re completely paranoid.

I’m not even in favor of teams retiring numbers of their own players. It’s just a number. Whats it gonna be like even 15-20 years from now when a new crop of players eventually get their numbers retired. What about the teams that already have a buttload of retired jerseys, are they gonna force players to wear 78, 93, 86? How about we just add another digit so we can give players #‘s in the 100’s. It’s stupid. Again, it’s just a number and If you watch a great player you should remember him by his play, who cares about the # they wore.

This is just LeBron shooting his mouth, but if the NBA really wanted to make up some MJ honor (which they don't)
They could just change the name of an award (say the MVP), or create a scoring title award with his name.
The MLB retired Jackie Robinson’s number, not Babe Ruth’s. Jordan was a transcendant player, and everyone respects him for that already. Shut up LeBron, go get your coach fired so I can actually enjoy watching you play.

I suppose we should even start retiring jerseys that say 23 all throughout the nation.
The NBA needs to go into random kids houses and steal their Jordan 23 jerseys. Adults who bought his jersey would then have to give it back. Let’s just make a big thing about it and not even allow people, who are playing video games, to create a player with the number 23.

Knocks on Jordan
- In my opinion, he wasn’t the best player in the history of the NBA. That would be Chamberlain, followed possibly by Kareem.
- He was the best INDIVIDUAL player of his time, but not the best BASKETBALL player. Those would be Bird and Magic. Those two didn’t just isolate and score — they orchestrated their teams and made their teammates champions. There’s a reason the Bulls couldn’t beat them.
- The league manipulated the rules and the refereeing so Jordan could win. Today, the rules and referees are a mess.
- The NBA became boring under Jordan rules. Every team ran isolation plays so its star could go one-on-one. The team game was abandoned, except by a few smart teams like Portland and San Antonio, who kept the flame.
- Off the court, Jordan never lifted a finger for anyone but himself. He was politically unaware, never saying a word that might hurt his endorsement earning potential. He was the anti-Jackie Robinson.
- His endorsements encouraged poor kids to spend $100-plus on (or even kill for) sneakers. He used his athletic image to push McDonald’s and Coca-Cola, helping turn the country obese. In terms of his real effect on people, he was an anti-athlete.
I don’t think the guy has any integrity. In my opinion.

23 should not be retired.
While Michael Jordan may be the greatest player ever and definitely the greatest player of his era, his number should not be retired by the entire NBA. Reason being, why doesn’t the NBA retire Bill Russell’s #6? He is a top 5 player ever and he has more championships then MJ. Russell also paved the way for future NBA stars like LeBron said MJ did. Why doesn’t the NBA retire Magic Johnson’s 32? He might have been the greatest player of all time and he was surely the best player of the 80’s. He showed that 6’8 guys can handle the ball and run a team. He changed the game and was as, if not more innovative than MJ. So MJ’s number is retired by the Bulls and the Heat for whatever reason and it needs to stay that way. If the league retires MJ’s number, there’s a list of players numbers the NBA should retire as well.
