For those of us "watching" the game via

Yahoo’s box score. What happened at the end? I see that a bunch of T’s were dealt. Was there a fight?

by torsoheap on Nov 14, 2009 6:24 PM PST reply actions

hahahah

there was a huge fight

Raja elbows LMA head and he goes ballistic…Roy / Oden / Rudy holds him back

by broyposse on Nov 14, 2009 6:38 PM PST up reply actions

no fight, but some conflict

LMA got the short end of the stick, with the ’cats getting a shot at the jump ball instead of a flagrant or extra T on Bell.

looked like Raja was trying to patch things up after the game but LMA was walking away.

Diaw is DIRTY. Diaw and Bowen are two of the most unethical players in the game, Reggie Evans and Chris Paul are runners up.

I need to stop being so hard on Steve Blake. Even though I'd rather see him as a top 5 backup PG than an undersized starting SG, he's a Bazer, he works hard, he has earned respect.

Rudy shot those fts like he wasn't even paying attention.

Grab the ball, fire in while only half looking at the rim.

Nice work on the rebounding. Looks like we’ve found Travis’ backup.

Great win for the team

Four wins on the road in 5 days is nothing to scoff at regardless of the other teams’ w/l records. They fought for it and have every right to feel proud.

Despite being the goat of last season’s playoffs, Travis is a big reason we got there and he fills a big roll. My heart goes out for him. One of my observations following the road trip is every game different guys are stepping up. We’re gonna need Rudy to find his shot. 2 for 4 from the arc is a good step. But he scares me stepping in front of those big fellas.

I thought they were lame calls

but understandable. Ref’s should be better than that (Oden was moving his feet and getting fouls called against him for other players running into him).

However, those calls have always gone against Odin, so he shouldn’t try to cut point guards off, let them go by, and block from behind.

Maybe it's more Andre Miller starting than anything else?

Because Blake has been terrible from the arc.

by Yawnie on Nov 14, 2009 6:41 PM PST up reply actions

Miller didn't have any special success getting people involved

he had to score tonight, and did. That’s the way the Bobcats played it, and I can’t argue with the results. It was the Roy and Miller show on offense, with smaller contributions from everyone else.

by blacknoiseNW on Nov 14, 2009 6:45 PM PST up reply actions

Take a look at the combined record of opponents.

With that said, still impressive because the Blazers are doing it on the road. Beating those teams decisively too.

They are still NBA teams, with NBA talent...

You’d expect the Lakers, Denver, and the Celtics to do the same (go 4-0) with these teams, and maybe no one else. That’s not bad company to be in. It’s an indicator of an elite-level team.

by OmoriumVerum on Nov 14, 2009 6:43 PM PST up reply actions

Elite might be pushing it, but upper-half at least.

It’s been good to see them win games they should win.

by Timmay! on Nov 14, 2009 6:45 PM PST up reply actions

No way...

By the end of this season, this team will be considered amongst the elite. With Trout going down long-term and Nic out as well, Rudy, Martell, and Bayless will see significant increases in their PT. They will all continue to improve and this team will be very dangerous at the end of the year.

by OmoriumVerum on Nov 14, 2009 6:50 PM PST up reply actions

I don't disagree that the team may be elite by the end of the season

But this probably isn’t the stretch to confirm their elite-ness.

by Timmay! on Nov 14, 2009 6:51 PM PST up reply actions

Upper half?

No way man.

You go on road winning streaks like this, that signals “elite.”

Upper half? No way this signals being an above .500 team.

I understand you want to be careful about getting too excited, but upper half is way more out there than elite.

I actually reconsidered it right after I submitted. But no higher than that right now. Way too much of the season to go.

by Timmay! on Nov 14, 2009 6:54 PM PST up reply actions

That's not meant to be negative about the Blazers, just to be clear.

Just don’t want to overreact to a run of games against teams that are clearly struggling to score.

As I’ve previously noted, 4-in-5 is still impressive, no matter the competition.

by Timmay! on Nov 14, 2009 6:55 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, the thing that bothers me about Roy isn't so much that he sucks on defense.

But that he doesn’t appear to even try.

It is really obvious on the open court where he just lets guys go by.

Rudy is the opposite of this. The guy may not be a great defender, but he gives his all on either end. Comes up with steals, offensive fouls and alters some shots.

Someone needs to call Roy out just like he called out Zach Randolph.

Or he can just be lazy now that he’s got his cash.

The Blazers do not have a history of laying eggs against ATL

and I think it is because we have both size and athleticism, and that is a tough matchup for ATL. It’s not like ATL has an especially fast guard tandem that can blow by Blazer defenders and get the bigs in trouble…

by blacknoiseNW on Nov 14, 2009 6:48 PM PST up reply actions

If Portland is to give Atlanta trouble on Monday, it'll be by Greg Oden overpowering Al Hoford inside.

The three-guard lineup will remain for the foreseeable future. In the meantime, we'll all just ...

grin and bear it. Most everyone understands it creates a horrible mismatch for the Portland Trail Blazers on defense — while having Steve Blake at the 3, Brandon Roy at the 2, and Andre Miller at the 1 on offense is no better than if Rudy Fernandez was at the 3 with those group of guys — yet, for whatever reason, Nate McMillan just doesn’t care about that. Y’know, if McMillan and Roy want their security blanket in Blake out there, then so be it. When things begin to go haywire, the blame will be placed squarely on their shoulders.

I haven’t been able to catch the last few games. Oden has been getting blocks, but also a lot of fouls. Does that seem to be a strategy by the opponents… take it to the hole, don’t worry about getting blocked, but try to draw fouls on Oden?

But it’s still a win. lets hope a day of rest and hopefully a little deeper look at the lower bench and all will be well.

Yes and yes, but

there are blackouts for games on “national” TV. You know, the TV that’s free…wait, what? Oh you mean, most of “national” TV games are on cable. Ah, got it.

I don’t think the league understands that some of us don’t care to get cable and feel that shelling out for LP BB should entitle us to all games.

Unless we win.

Because we got every excuse to lose right now… so a loss wouldn’t mean much.

Unfair comparison

He had tonsillitis during summer league – not exactly known to enhance performance.

Yeah but Bayless was also the MVP of last years summer league.

I would think if Oden would never got that injury, then by now he would dominate on defense.

he'll learn eventually

overcoming some of those defensive mistakes can be unlearned. he’ll figure it out. I just wish the refs would recognize guys are often just throwing themselves into his body to get the call. That’s cheap.

He doesn't seem unitelligent to me..

He makes good decisions with the ball. And to his defense, some of the calls he gets are indeed cheap.. But having him for 20 minutes a night just isn’t going to cut …They are going to need an effective Oden 30 minutes a game to get deep into the playoffs.. Dwight Howard will eat Oden alive I am afraid and I’m looking forward to the test Bynum will give him.. Granted, played Duncan well but Duncan is not 85% of what Duncan used to be.

Huh?

Greg Oden’s foul troubles are more a matter of circumstance — as he’s a young big who’s anchoring an inside that’s flanked by a porous perimeter defense, while referees are giving him somewhat of a tough time during his adjustment period — so there’s no need to question his intelligence.

Oden, without question, isn’t like Jerryd Bayless, who continues to make foolish hand-checking touch fouls on the perimeter each and every time he’s out there. If anybodyshows a lack of defensive BBIQ among second-year players on the Portland Trail Blazers, it’s Bayless.

+1

Greg needs to cut down/eliminate the silly fouls like the reach in the 1st quarter, but a number (if not most) of his fouls come from needing to help/protect the rim when a Blazer wing has been beaten off the dribble. Batum will help with this when he gets back, but defense is a team game, and right now Oden and Joel do the majority of the work and, unfortunately, suffer Nate’s hook, rather than the sieves in front of them on the perimeter.

I don’t see why ALL OF THE SUDDEN you don’t like Bayless.

by Mortimer on Nov 14, 2009 8:09 PM PST up reply actions

Disagree

He just needs a bit more time in the league and he’ll start getting the benefit of the doubt. Right now he’s just going through referee hazing.

On a more serious note, the fouls he was getting last year were more justifiable as he was making stupid rookie mistakes or he was just too slow in his reaction time (either because of his injury or because he was thinking too much instead of acting on instinct). This year, I’m noticing a greater number of what I’d call “ticky-tacky” fouls – Greg is overall playing much better / smarter and he’s got a great deal of his pre-microfracture speed and jumping height back (I’d say he’s at 90% of what he was at when he played at Ohio). Case in point, the game against Minnesota where he had 18 points / 11 rebounds / 1 steal / 1 block / 0 turnovers / 0 fouls.

No, this isn't hazing....

Hazing would be Oden vs. Howard.. this isn’t some welcome to the league kid stuff… Don’t you think he was hazed enough last year? He got plenty of those ticky tack fouls to go 2 seasons over.. It is a legitimate cause for concern… And like I said, these hazing moments by the refs would be coming against the Howards, Gasols, Bynums, Wallaces, Garnetts of the world… Not Tyson Chandler.

by Bump22 on Nov 14, 2009 7:22 PM PST up reply actions

Last year wasn't ticky-tacky

Last year was Oden was lousy out there. This year he’s on another level. I’d say at least 35% of the fouls I’ve seen Greg called on were questionable at best. In general I’m seeing a lot of fouls on Gregzilla that wouldn’t have been called last year (how many times do you remember Joel fouling out?). Not sure why, but I don’t think it’ll last too much longer. On the other hand, I’ve been wrong before and will surely be wrong again.

As a side note

In the box score of that game, the 6’7" Dejuan Blair is indicated as the Spurs’ starting center.

For the record, he’s amassed 7 points, 1 assist, 1 block, 3 TOs and a whopping 1 rebound in 13 minutes played.

Just sayin’…

how's it going knickfan?

You think the Knicks will get it going? I expected them to be a ~30 win team this year. DIdn’t expect the magnitude of these early struggles. What’s the explanation?

by jksnake99 on Nov 14, 2009 7:49 PM PST up reply actions

Short answer

Al Harrington and Larry Hughes. Two of the game’s most notorious chucks on the same team sucking what little life there is out of the Knick “offense.” And from what mercifully little I’ve seen so far, it seems to be contagious. Chandler (a player who I like and once had high hopes for) has settled for hoisting up a bushelful of shots himself, mainly jumpers. If Zach were still on the team, he’d seem the very model of restraint in comparison.

Obviously the truth is much more complicated than that. Team has beaucoup issues right now. It’s still early and it’s possible they can turn things around. But I’m not hopeful – not so long as the roster is infested with players who should be out shilling for Chuck E. Cheese.

Okie City hot on the trail. Figured they'd surprise this yr.

Might be their year for a long winning streak and/or big jump in overall wins. They have decent talent. I hope they are in the hunt. Rather see them than UT or DVR—or LA*L for that matter.

blazers

I agree with the commenter that the Blazers are just a top 50% team right now, not elite.

They are clearly a long way from getting their rhythm going.

But there are some positives so far. Roy and Aldridge are getting back up to speed- they can’t evolve into better players until they get back to where they were, and they look like they are not very far from that point.

As everyone has commented, Oden looks great. Yes he still has foul problems in some games, but he has clearly improved his game in ways that will result in a lot less foul-plagued games for him. And he looks confident on offense. Don’t forget, one reason for low point scoring, low assists, etc in the Charlotte game is that Charlotte plays darn good defense. That Oden showed good offense against a strong defensive team that has quality bigs is a very positive sign.

Miller is more and more looking like he is going to be a key ingredient to whatever success the Blazers have this year. I shudder to think what their record would be right now if they didn’t have him.

Rudy is playing scrappy, he’s committed some turnovers in recent games but overall I’d say his performance is promising. Should they put him in the starting lineup in place of Blake? Inquiring minds want to know.

Martell has not really clicked much yet. I think they need to limit him to fairly small minutes until he gets more in the flow of things, then they could gradually try to give him a bigger role.

With Travis out they need to take a gamble and give Cunningham some minutes besides just garbage time, see what the guy can do.
