11/14 Junk Drawer

Sup all y'all! This is the Drawer de Junk.

So today on F. B. I noticed Gavin Dawson became a fan of "pretending to text in awkward situations."

What's your secret formula for escaping awkward situations? How do you get out? Or do you bask in the awkwardness--"just to see what it feels like"?

I don't always junk here, but when I do--I prefer Love Galacteys.

Stay peaceful my friends.

Chris Paul should just sit when we play them in NOLA

Two times in a row he’s been hurt when we’re down there. Cursed I tells ya.

It'a all my fault

Both times I made Shrimp Creole as a lucky meal. I really like Chris Paul, so I’ll never make it again when we play the Hornets. It was delicious though.

Nice, yeah those guys went through so many biscuit recipes trying to get it down. I'm so stoked for how well they've done.

I helped Walt(one of the owners) with a few of the fixtures at the Belmont spot when they were getting ready to open. If you look at the wall where the tag from Guy Fieri is, the dollar on the wall is mine. I got the first biscuit sandwich from that place.

I honestly think he's going to Brooklyn

It’s NYC, which is what he wants, the Nets actually have some decent young guys (Harris, Lopez, Williams, Lee – although they should have kept Andersen), a high draft pick with a decent class coming out, LeBron and Jay Z (part owner) are boys, and they will have a rich Russian oligarch who can print his own currency for an owner. Plus, it fits with what seems to be LeBron’s “leader of the new school” public persona/marketing campaign – change from 23 to 6 because you’re your own man, same thing goes for building the NYC basketball version of the Mets (Nets) rather than gravy training off the legacy of the Yankees (Knicks). I think he’s a Brooklyn Net next year.

neither, they are both comfortable in their own skin.

Think about it, the penguin struts around with its chest puffed out and its head held high. And that’s when it’s walking, it’s not even in its element. It knows that if it can just get in some water it’s gonna kick some serious A.

And Turtles don’t live by anyone’s rules but their own. They live life at their own pace, and they follow their own agenda. If they don’t like what’s going on they can just tuck into their own little protective shell, and have some quality “me time”

I’m not sure if you could have found two more confident creatures in the entire animal kingdom.

Call me crazy, but I wouldn't be shocked if Dave thought it was a bigger slap in the fact that a group of ...

JDers have done their own game threads than any of the unnecessary post-game wrap-up fan posts that Aaron Sass has flooded the sidebar with recently. I really don’t care either way, but a part of me thinks that Corivd’s comments about how some folks in the JD are too “cliquey” and are using Blazersedge in a very similar way for which they were criticizing Sass are right on the money.

Ugh, that should say slap in the face.

Anyway, let me elaborate on my point in the last sentence of the above post.

Just like how Aaron Sass was fairly criticized for having an unbalanced amount of fan posts compared to comments, a person may argue that folks who post almost strictly in the JD aren’t using Blazersedge in the manner that’s intended. Using the JD as a lifestyle forum and avoiding basketball comversation in the main page threads and other fan posts is not a way to partake in the community as a whole.

For me, I guess my stance is that people should get involved in all aspects of Blazersedge; otherwise, you have no room to complain about stuff that goes on outside of your normal commenting area.

As much as people joke about only reading the JD

I rarely see people only here in the JD, and not elsewhere on this site as well.

And of course, the JD Gameday thread experiment ended as of Wednesday’s game, with a few exceptions who really want to do their own thing.

by Timmay! on Nov 13, 2009 10:25 PM PST up reply actions

I don't like venturing outside the JD anymore

the threads before the season started (the racism one, for example) really scared me off. I might start going back out there more often later on this season.

I do post in the GDTs occasionally, if I’m watching the game by myself.

Yeah, most people who are regular JDers participate elsewhere on the site.

There are a group of folks, however, who treat this as almost like a LiveJournal.

On this matter, my unsolicited advice — which can be taken or tossed out for all I care — is that people who tend to post strictly in the JD should broaden their horizons. Heck, maybe they should even consider making a basketball-related fan post instead of a JD fan post for once in their life. That’s just a suggestion, though.

I’m not sure what game recaps you refer to other than a couple people wrote recaps who

attended the preseason games when those games weren’t televised.
I wrote one recap, for the sole purpose to see if it would be duplicated, and it was.

I don’t see this on a par at all, there’s one JD (2 lately), for thousands of comments, where people do bring up basketball, but in more of a lunchroom type setting.
There are literally thousands of posters who frequent this blog and if we all did a post game recap, I’d be gone in a heartbeat.

Also it’s not on par at another level.

I would never join some blog to do nothing but shoot the breeze.
I very much like living in the JD, and shooting the breeze with people I’ve met here. And love the fact that there is all kinds breaking news (basketball and other) that are brought up in this very JD. I venture out and read posts all the time.
While there is a point to make if one only lived in the JD, Someone mainly residing in the JD is entirely unrelated to having a post ratio of 1:1, making duplicate posts, and making a ton of posts that belong as a comment in someone else’s thread.

Thanks mort, for filling up the deficiencies where my comment lacked yesterday.

After your comment I was really wishing that I had included a line similar in thought to your last remarks, so as to put something out there that had a friendlier disposition to it. I probably shouldn’t attempt posting on things that have a more serious tone while I’m at work.

You are such the consummate pro. In an upside down world where peasants rule the world and kings and magistrates’ are the eyesore of humanity, you would be the most miserable, dirty, filthy, beggar in all the land and I would be the glorious king who would undoubtedly kill myself due to the bane of my existence, except for the fact that I could use my wealth to create mass quantities of completely worn out boots, shoes, and clothes for the maintenance of your lifestyle, and the subsistence of all your hobo companions – and that my friend, would be the only joy of my suffocating, meager, continued existence.

In light of recent events, I’m feeling it was all for not anyway.

the entire nba landscape would have changed. Suns wouldn’t have lost to the spurs, and now would have had 3 consecutive titles. Everybody in the NBA would have an apostrophe in their first name as a tribute to Amar’e.

I started writing that post meaning every word, but then got lost thinking how to make it funny yet true. Then I just let it become farcical. But in a nutshell, I do not think Sergio would have become as aimless as he is today if he had played with the suns. He can’t shoot the ball, but he can dish, and would have learned from the pre-eminent pg in the league. He got traded from the absolute best situation to the absolute worst situation in the NBA for his style of play.

I couldn't decide if you were being serious or not. :)

But yeah, Sergio went from being with Steve Nash and Mike D’Antoni to Jarrett Jack, Steve Blake and Nate McMillan with Brandon Roy. One one those two groups is much more suited to growing his style.

Sergio likely wouldn’t be a star right now, but the Suns environment would probably have fostered the better parts of his game while still allowing him to be a bit free-wheeling.

The apostrophe thing would have been optional.

-Tim’may

by Timmay! on Nov 13, 2009 10:36 PM PST up reply actions

D'Antoni never really plays rooks/young guys either

He rides Nash hard. The up and down style woulda’ been better for Sergio, but his lack of shot would have hurt him with the Suns as well and they’d still try to bring in a veteran PG… which they did with Banks and others, but D’Antoni never trusted anyone else when he could ride Nash hard.

I think the Blazers wasn’t a great place for Sergio, with our coach and our pace, but he has clear and big holes in his game that will cause him problems for ANY team trying to win.

The Dubs, he’d be perfect for, if Nelly didn’t prefer small SGs as PGs.

The Kings under Westphal, before getting Tyreke, was probably the best place for him— a team not trying to win (well, shows what I know, they’ve won 4 in a row) and plays up tempo.

He’s still got plenty of time to carve out a niche there.

I ain't looked at Beno's stats yet

And since I don’t got my normal League Pass, I feel woefully under-learned about who is doing what now.

Beno looked like Nice-Beno the one time I saw him this season, but that’s how Beno is… looks like he’s worth the full MLE he got one night, and a brickmaster who turns the ball over 3 times a quarter the next.

Sergio could beat him out, but I’d say Beno likely has a better all-round game when both are at their absolute best.

Any team would put the guy they’re paying 30 million bucks to over the kid in his last year of his rookie deal who just got there.

Despite the easy schedule….

I feel like our defense is sustainable. Greg is playing the pick and roll beautifully. He’s shading to one side and recoring to his man.

Andre looked really good on CP tonight. Really, really good. He’s savvy.

I think our defense will be top eight while our offense will regress back to last season as our shooting picks up the pace.

by Cablinasian on Nov 13, 2009 11:07 PM PST up reply actions

Andre Miller is starting to show why he was such a useful pickup

Though he has a ways to go to really fit into the system. Though, to be fair, the system needs to adjust to him too. (The system needs to handle a PG who can’t shoot from the outside)

This could be a very interesting team (even from a national perspective) by the All Star Break.

by Timmay! on Nov 13, 2009 11:10 PM PST up reply actions

the thing that I’m starting to see is that we will be a really, really good defensive team when Oden is dominant. A center warps the entire flow of the game. Teams are U-turning out of the lane.

Add to that an offense that isn’t reliant on any one player, and it’s beautiful. We actually exploited matchups tonight, rather than vice versa.

by Cablinasian on Nov 13, 2009 11:12 PM PST up reply actions

Just by playing our defense of last season

Which played the odds and let people shoot as long as it was over our hands, and not gambling… by having that big man in the middle who no one wants to attack, it makes our previously weak-esque defense pretty dang good.

With how bad we looked in pre-season defensively, it’s kinda neat to have us (at least statistically) seem good defensively… and I think we’ll get a lot better still.

by Mortimer on Nov 13, 2009 11:15 PM PST up reply actions

Teams are U-turning out of the lane.

We were already starting to see that when Oden was struggling last year. Now? Other than foul trouble, Greg is one of the scariest inside presences in the league.

I lost count how many times tonight Oden adjusted shots. And those will never show up in an advanced statistic or on SportsCenter. Only we’re seeing his impact.

by Timmay! on Nov 13, 2009 11:15 PM PST up reply actions

I saw CP3 do this so many times tonight
Teams are U-turning out of the lane.

He made one floater early in the game over Oden, but other than that I can’t remember him taking a shot inside. He would just U-turn and look for shooters to pass to.

Oden is just so good already

a dominant force rebounding the basketball. Does he have an outside shot to make the All-Defense team?

It really is too bad that he isn’t putting up the gaudy stats like Bynum, because Gregory really deserves more recognition for what he has been doing so far this year.

And looks more comfortable still, and of course more offensively polished.

But he’s got more experience, and is integrated in the offense much better still.

Oden is, for sure, a better defender and rebounder, which is no small tatos.

Fluke?

Nah.

They will be a 4 or 5 seed in the playoffs, but they could easily be eliminated in the 1st Round depending on the matchups. They face any team with a low post presence (basically the top 3-4 teams in the West) and they are screwed.

Depends on what ya mean by Fluke

They certainly won’t have one of the best records but that team and it’s style (as long as Nash is healthy) will win games during the regular season.

I think it just proves what we already knew— Nash runs really well, they and that style can score as long as they got decent players, and it won’t matter in the playoffs.

by Mortimer on Nov 13, 2009 11:09 PM PST up reply actions

Seems reasonable that, with the drop of Utah, NO, and Houston, they could reach the 6th seed

That leaves a first round opponent of, say, Denver, an interesting Spurs matchup or, dare I say it, Portland. Who can’t seem to handle uptempo teams yet (though it may be ok by the end of the season).

Just for last year

They played 32 games against the teams in the top 10 for pace.

Their overall record was 21-11
Their record against teams over .500 (eg. playoff-caliber): 8-8.

Overall margin of victory would be crazy, since Chicago and Sacramento were among those teams at .500 or under but in the top 10 of pace. Over .500 margin would be much closer. But I’m not going to be up for that research tonight.

Quick list
PRank | Record | Team | H2H

1 | 29-53 | GSW | 1-2
2 | 32-50 | New York | 2-0
3 | 36-46 | Indiana | 2-0
4 | 46-36 | Phoenix | 2-2
5 | 65-17 | LAL | 2-2
5 | 54-28 | DEN | 2-2
7 | 23-59 | OKC | 3-1
8 | 17-65 | Sacramento | 3-0

I missed most of the game tonight. Besides it sounding awful, what happened?

our defense was really good. They compounded the matter by missing shots.

Oden and Andre defended the pick and roll just beautifully against Paul and Okafor in the third when Blake was out. It brought a small tear to my eye. Actually shading toward the ballhandler and recovering to his man.

LaMarcus is a man possessed on the defensive glass. Brought a tear to my other eye. If he keeps this up (efficiency up near 55% TS, rebound rate inching toward 15%), his detractors will have a lot less ammunition.

That said, we should’ve lost. New Orleans was incredibly disjointed.

Oden went to the rim to block shots, which was nice.

Rudy was terrible. turrible. just turrible. Turnovers and sloppy defense. It was poitned out by Norsk that he is way, way overplaying to one side on defense. Practically giving his man a freeway to the hoop.

In the 3rd or 4th or whatever (I was distracted)

I actually saw Oden trail Collison or Thornton drive down the lane and wait to block it at the hoop. That patience and waiting and playing BIG brought a tear to MY eye.

Really sounds like each team was God-awful and woulda’ got blown out most nights by the other.

Oden dominated inside again, despite not really scoring the basketball. He got Okafor into early foul troubles and it was nice to see him on the "other side’ of foul trouble for once.

LMA was beastly, 20 and 13. He got hot to begin the 2nd half and Portland kept feeding him the ball.

Roy had trouble shooting (again) and dribbling tonight. Since the switch to the 3 guard lineup, he has really struggled with his shot, or so it seems. Is it just a coincidence?

I think I said in the game thread that Chris wasn’t throwing the game. It was more an issue of him seeming so distraught, confused, angry… that he was trying to play but was so emotional that he was off his game. When he pounded the floor with his ankle hurt… wow.

Bower and Shinn knew he wouldn’t give his blessing so instead of making it something where they’re going against his known wishes, they’re thinking it’s better to just fire Scott and deal with Paul afterwards… hoping that not DIRECTLY going against what he specifically didn’t want to do won’t be as bad.

by Mortimer on Nov 13, 2009 11:27 PM PST up reply actions

I don't like the Washington Huskies style of play, which is like an up-tempo dribble-drive motion offense.

I’m happy that Lorenzo Romar will only use a ten-man rotation, though, which may allow for him to possibly redshirt Clarence Trent along with C.J. Wilcox. Anyway, I think that Romar should alter the rotation to fit this format.

C: Matthew Bryan-Amaning (24)
C: Darnell Gant (16)
PF: Quincy Pondexter (32)
PF: Tyrese Breshers (8)
SF: Elston Turner (15)
SF: Justin Holiday (15)
SF/SG: Scott Suggs (15)
SG: Isaiah Thomas (35)
PG: Venoy Overton (24)
PG: Abdul Gaddy (16)

I’d like to see Gaddy start over Overton, but I don’t see that happening right away due to a few reasons. For one, freshman point guards are notorious slow starters in college. Next, Overton’s thuggish defense along the perimter — which is too overaggressive in my opinion — has won over Romar. Finally, Gaddy’s lack of range from deep needs to improve before he’s a real threat on offense.

Fire Nate McMillan & hire Jeff Van Gundy.

OSU lost at TX A&M

horrible night shooting for OSU. First Game jitters for a bunch of the players, they were like 4/20 from the free throw line.

Texas A&M-CC is a pretty good team though, they were a couple missed free throws from the NCAAs last year and probably will make it this year as they are the heavy favorites in their conference.

Okafor did well. He got real, real low and stayed stout with Oden, got him off balance on the hooks. They were more fouling him when he got good position, not on dunk attempts and such.

For me, I'm disappointed that Martell is having a relapse.

As I noted in the gameday thread (and in the month before the season), I’m worried this is partially the effect of not being in the vicinity of game-day shape yet. He’s making tired mistakes.

On the bright side, even with his shot completely abandoning him, he doesn’t normally look invisible on the court. Except tonight, where both Martell and Rudy seemed like the worst guys on the court.

by Timmay! on Nov 13, 2009 11:45 PM PST up reply actions

Yup, me too

When he starts picking up his dribble-drives instead of taking a slightly contested shot, bad things start to happen. With Nic, I would be confident that going inside produces better results than taking the 3. And even there I would venture to say the percentages and attempts wouldn’t be far apart this year. It sucks big time that he is out, he would have so made the sophomores team if not an all-defensive team.

Jennings winning ROY will be a huge upset

That’d be really cool, since no one figured he’d be good enough. Too slight of build, too wild, too inexperienced, playing with a controlling no-nonsense coach on a bad team…

Crazy how good he’s doing. Wish I could see it.

What’s up with Steve Blake? Is this the start of his eventual decline? Is he simply struggling with his new role? Is it just an extended slump?

What’s his long-term prospects? Bye-bye after this contract? It’s no secret that both KP and Nate like him.

it’s called a career year because it happens once in a career.

Regression was inevitable. His shooting will be nice, but he’s getting up there in NBA age, especially for a guy that can’t play physically due to a frail frame.

Part of the problem was, he was a very average PG before and now he’s a very sub-par SG/SF for the NBA.

If he ain’t hitting shots, he ain’t doing anything, sadly.

One fastbreak, he was streaking out ahead and Miller had the ball, and if it was a real SG or SF, it woulda’ ended in a dunk. Miller smartly pulled a Blake and set up the offense instead.

Nasty Ball?

Here is my favorite part of Quick’s recap of last night’s game

Even with their horrible shooting, the Hornets trailed only 11-6, as the Blazers were just as bad. Portland started missing 16 of its first 20 shots. The score at the end of the first quarter looked like a middle school game: Portland 14, New Orleans 12.

Turns out the problem – at least from the Blazers’ point of view — was the ball.

“We didn’t like the ball,” Brandon Roy said. “As soon as the referee threw it to me I was like, ‘What? This is a nasty ball.’ It was just an old ball. Real old ball.”

The visiting team usually gets to pick the game ball, and Roy said Steve Blake told him that wasn’t the ball he selected. In fact, the NBA has a new rule this season that requires the game ball to have a newly stamped “genuine leather” indicator. The rule was put in to prevent old, beat-up balls from being used. Roy said Friday’s game ball didn’t carry the required stamp.

“We complained to the refs, but they said they were going to stick with it,” Roy said. “So we told ourselves to try and play through it.”

Wow

Re: Dave's opinion on Mike Rice/alcohol comments, here is the full quote (posted here because it's long)
About the Mike Rice Comments
There have been several comments over the past few months about Mike Rice’s sobriety. Some have been teasing, I think. Others have been more serious. Either way, I’ve seen enough. They’re making me sick.

Mike Rice is a real person. I have met Mike Rice and talked to him. Critiquing how someone does their job when that job involves public scrutiny by nature is fair. Accusations of this sort are not.

One of two things is true here:

1. The references are COMPLETELY off-base and insulting.

Or…

2. They’re true, in which case this is a serious matter and not something to be batted about casually on an internet site completely outside of the context of finding help for the person involved, among people who don’t even care about finding help for the person involved and just want to laugh or make snarky comments about them.

In my opinion—not that I know much—the first is the case here. But I have known people who have actually struggled with alcoholism and had drinking ruin their lives and even if it were to be Case #2 I would find these kind of comments in this context reprehensible.

Either way, this site wasn’t created so people can lob that kind of stuff around either without basis or without giving a damn about the person they’re talking about (depending on whether it’s Case 1 or 2). We’ve had enough comments about Rice in that vein. They add nothing useful and plenty destructive to the conversation. Thanks for understanding that and refraining. A few comments of this sort have been deleted from this post.

Also, a couple other questions… When we discuss Rebecca Haarlow, who admittedly is also a fair subject for public critique given her job, can’t we do better than comments involving bedroom activities? And what does Wheels’ size have to do with his broadcasting ability? These are cheap, anonymous shots that you’d never utter in the person’s presence. Let’s avoid them here.

Again…REAL PEOPLE. We’re talking about REAL…PEOPLE.

Ok I just posted above and reading this feel it’s understandable and reasonable. Sometimes my head sways back and forth on what’s over the line and what’s not. It’s easy to be callous without realizing it. I’m certainly guilty of that on occasion. What I may think is funny may be really hurtful to someone else.

Recently there was a pic about bi-polar disorder posted in a post game day thread. It was certainly meant to be funny, but having been in the midst of a near crippling mixed cycle myself the past few weeks I wondered if the poster even considered how such a seemingly innocuous reference could affect someone else. That stuff happens and shedding water off the duck’s back has to be a part of the program.

What is the Blazer all time “shoulda” lineup? We shouda drafted that guy or we shoulda done this or that….I’m gonna go with

Paul (took Webster instead)
Jordan (this one is obvious)
Josh Smith (I couldn’t really figure out a good one here. Took Telfair 13th in 2004 instead)
Jermaine O’Neal (no playing time)
Sabonis (if only he came to play when he was drafted)

the benefits for the game are huge. How many superstars in the league actually earn what they get paid.

Unfortunately as I’m sure we will see with the Hedo contract, too many players get paid based on only one or two years production, and most contracts are based on potential. If that potential never comes to fruition, the team is stuck with a never-ran, at a premium price.

Whole franchises are being hamstrung by these contracts, and many talented players are never given the chance to flourish.

I think most Blazer fans just desperately don't want Oden to be a player who never lives up to the expectations that a number one player carries.

And we are so tired of hearing how great Durant is, even though he has a more one-dimensional game, and would not have given us as well-rounded a team as Oden does.

i'd like to think expectations for Oden have become properly tempered at this point.

he was absolutely the right pick no matter what happens. But I’m not sure he’ll be an “all-time” top center like people thought. But he’ll be very good and an integral part of winning a title. But I don’t think 25-15 is every gonna happen for him.

I don't know if Blazers fans with Oden are as bad as he is with KD

We got homers that think Oden will become the next Russell, but I think most of us would like that and don’t expect it to happen. I don’t see as many Blazers fans making record setting predictions for Oden like Simmons does with KD.

by tominhawaii on Nov 14, 2009 2:45 PM PST up reply actions

that's true.

KD won’t ever be on the Kobe-MJ-LeBron or even Wade level that Simmons seems to think he will.

Blazers make the Fans, Fans don't make the Blazers--broyposse

by DrivetheLane on Nov 14, 2009 2:47 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah we are very helpful and supportive of Oden, and yes we all might be guilty of lauding his smaller victories disproportionately

but so what. We don’t live in a town with a fan base that boo’s their team if they get down by ten. We don’t go heckle our own coach. We aren’t trying to make Oden out to be something more than what he is, but we are definitely trying to foster a feeling of acceptance, and comfort for the guy.

I’m sure Greg is more than capable of criticizing himself for the way his career has gone so far. If he maintains an attitude of failure there is no way he will ever be as good as he could be. So I am totally okay with cheering extra loud for him, for every thing he does right on the court. I’d rather him be deluded and excelling on the court, than be brooding and plodding.

Same here

No matter if it’s a fish, a deal, a woman or man, a car, a game, or a draft pick, it’s just not healthy to dwell on the one that got away.

The same goes with the Bowie/Jordan crap. Why should I get upset over something I didn’t even know about until a few years ago? I wasn’t even a fan of basketball when Jordan was in the league, and I’m not the type to brag about the past. Even if Jordan was a Blazer, I don’t care. Past championships are worthless to me. I’m not a fan of the Blazers because of any of their history.

I bet half the folks that talk about the Jordan draft weren’t even born then.

by tominhawaii on Nov 14, 2009 3:01 PM PST up reply actions   1 recs

see I lived through all that stuff, I remember all the fans saying FOREVER how we could have had Jordan.

But in the end, we didn’t. And that doesn’t make me any less fond of the teams that played against him in his prime. It is ridiculous that the number one story surrounding Oden is still how much better Durant’s career has gone, and how you can’t help but think about what this kid could have done for us if we had drafted him.

Enough already! We didn’t draft him! We also didn’t draft Chris Paul, or Michael Jordan, or any number of outstanding all star players who it is not worth playing revisionist fantasy basketball with!

Bowie was a good player, and he was much further ahead than Jordan at the time of the draft.

He was widely thought to be the obvious choice at the time. It’s only when we look back at the way their two careers played out that we can say which would have been the better choice.

I love how people are so sure that THEY would have made the right decision if it would have been up to them. It’s easy to make the choice 25 years after the fact. But I bet at the time of the draft they probably knew very little about each player, and didn’t have any kind of clue about what it takes to run an nba franchise

I would give it all up for a billion dollars

Sam Bowie was oft-injured at Kentucky and Michael Jordan ...

was a winner at North Carolina. Coming out of high school, Bowie was the man; yet, by the time their college careers had come to an end, Jordan was easily more accomplished than the 7-footer from some podunk town in Pennsylvania.

I would give it all up for a billion dollars

by Tyler Durrden on Nov 14, 2009 11:17 PM PST up reply actions

Once again, it's time for me to quote myself!
“The main problem with the 1984 off-season was the short-sighted Kiki Vandeweghe trade in which the team decimated its depth for a defensively inept, high-volume shooting small forward.

Instead of trading Wayne Cooper, Calvin Natt, and Fat Lever — along with a couple of draft picks — for Vandeweghe, the Trail Blazers should’ve not made the deal and, moreover, drafted Michael Jordan in lieu of the oft-injured Sam Bowie with the 2nd pick in the ’84 NBA Draft.

Under that scenario, the 1984-1985 Trail Blazers could’ve possibly trotted out the following roster.

C: Mychael Thompson
PF: Calvin Natt
SF: Michael Jordan
SG: Jim Paxson
PG: Darnell Valentine
C: Wayne Cooper
PF: Kenny Carr
SF/SG: Clyde Drexler
PG: Fat Lever
C: Audie Norris
SG: Bernard Thompson
PG: Steve Colter

Now, with that noted, I didn’t include Jerome Kersey on that revised rendition of the ‘84-’85 roster, as he’d’ve had a tough time making the team out of camp as a second-round draft pick with that loaded of a ballclub. Bernard Thompson, who was a low first-round draft pick that very same year, would’ve had an edge over Kersey that fall on making the team."

Scott Skiles has since enetered the picture and cleaned up that mess on defense, which shows something. Now, if only the Bucks had a competent front office, for then they’d be in business.

was the LMA/Bell thing anything big? Wheels made it sound like a big deal.

by Starvin' Marvin on Nov 14, 2009 7:26 PM PST up reply actions

About the same amount of pushing as the Ariza foul. Definitely nothing major, but it was an above average scuffle. LMA was really pissed and Oden was having some difficulty in holding him back. Basically what happened was:

- Rudy attempts a 3-pointer from the right corner

- LMA and Bell begin to fight for rebounding position in the low block

- Bell boxes out LMA, but in the process manages to (seemingly) intentionally elbow LMA in the back of his his head

- LMA gets pissed and goes face-to-face with Bell

- Gerald Wallace runs in and starts shoving LMA

- Roy comes in and gets between Wallace and LMA, and he also pushes Wallace back a bit

- Oden comes in to the scuffle and tries to separate all of the players

- Oden then begins to hold LMA back who is still fuming and trying to get in Bell’s face

- LMA keeps shoving his teammates trying to get at Bell but eventually calms down after all three refs get between the two parties

This all happened in 10 – 15 second span.

Just a day in the NBA.

Love.

by L-TrainFTW! on Nov 14, 2009 7:34 PM PST up reply actions

they were tied up with each other Lma had bell around the back and Bell threw an elbow

they went face up, and then Wallace and Chandler came in grabbed Lma and pushed him out of the way.
The blazers that got in there looked like they were just trying to separate dudes, but I think Wallace and Chandler were a little aggressive towards LMA

I would give it all up for a billion dollars

by Tyler Durrden on Nov 14, 2009 7:38 PM PST up reply actions

I think the refs let a few to many things go in this game

the Bobcats were allowed to play really physical, while the Blazers were getting called for ticky-tack stuff. I think the frustration was getting palpable for the Blazers, while Charlotte continued to get more and more physical. This was almost an example of how to create a volatile game environment in an nba game.

they got up by 14 points and then Barkley pressed and threw a stupid pick-6 and then USC folded from there and Stanford kept piling the points on.

USC did fold, but they had no answer for Stanford's offense all game

Oregon State dominated the game against Stanford, no question. I’m not a big head-2-head guy though. I think that in the last few weeks, Stanford’s played the best football. Anyway, if OSU can go into Autzen and win, they’ll be deserving conference champs (I can’t really see Arizona running the table). I don’t see that happening though.

the Pac-10 POY Race will be very interesting over the final few weeks

Gerhart has Quizz beat in rushing yards by 80, and in rushing TDs by one (16-15).

But Quizz has Gerhart beat in all of the receiving stats (and passing stats ;) )

It could very well come down to how Quizz does against Oregon in the Civil War.

Quizz really lacks a “signature” performance against a top team (except Stanford), yet Gerhart has had two big games now against both Oregon and USC.

Plus if Stanford finishes top-3 in the conference, Gerhart is going to get a ton of credit for it.

There's no reason he can't be a ~40% volume 3 point shooter who can play defense

He has shown the capacity for both, shooting near 40% his last full season, and showing some great defensive games this year.

In a volume 3 point shooter, that is great.

by Mortimer on Nov 14, 2009 11:09 PM PST up reply actions

?

He shot 39% his last full season.

You don’t see that as able to be upped 1 percentage point?

by Mortimer on Nov 14, 2009 11:11 PM PST up reply actions

I don't think he will, no.

I think he will be about a 38% 3 point shooter for his career, and I think he will continue to be an extremely poor mid range shooter.

He is a decent option off the bench as a solid wing defender who can hit a 3 at a reasonable percentage.

by jksnake99 on Nov 14, 2009 11:14 PM PST up reply actions

You're a number's guy, sorta.

He made 123 three’s his last full season out of 317. If he makes 4 whole three pointers more over the season, going 127 for 317, he is a 40% shooter.

It is an almost meaningless distinction. AROUND 40% and good defense is not bad at all.

by Mortimer on Nov 14, 2009 11:16 PM PST up reply actions

I know you can go the other way with it

“Well if he misses 4 more he’s a 36% shooter” or whatever.

Call me crazy, but I honestly think Jason Thompson has a promising future.

I know people are down on Emeka Okafor, but trading Kenny Thomas’ ginormous expiring contract for him would be a huge boon for the Kings interior defense. Although Okafor is no speed demon, Paul Westphal could still run comfortably with Tyreke Evans, Kevin Martin (when healthy), and Beno Udrih running the break. The second unit could then feature a high-octane group of Spencer Hawes, Omri Casspi, Andres Nocioni, Ime Udoka — until Francisco Garcia returns — and Sergio Rodriguez, who should get some burn.

I haven't been able to watch enough to know the deal with Okafor

Why has he been so lazy and non-teammate like this year?

He was a good, tough defender before. He seemed to care.

I thought Chandler for Okafor was a great deal, and I think Kenny Thomas for Okafor is a helluva steal.

It would mean the Kings don’t think Hawes is a starting center, but that is true, so that’s cool. I don’t think Jason Thompsons will be a 10+ rebound guy, but he’s certainly a 15+ scoring guy.

third he got called for an offensive foul. Andre drove down the court, dumped to Greg in good position. He turned to face up and head to the basket and Diaw? acted like he got shot.

fourth he dropped his arms on a penetrator.

fifth he tried to seal the baseline against Crash, Crash ran into him and fell down, Oden barely budged.

sixth he got caught against Felton driving to the basket.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
