If you didn't already hate the Lakers with all your heart and soul...
Ugh, ugh, ugh. What a smarmy, sanctimonious, pompous column. My favorite part is "He's a championship-assuring difference right now" followed closely by "The Lakers' biggest Western rivals play in Denver."
Like in all empires, hubris precedes collapse...and I hear that there are some REAL hungry Visigoths in Portland these days.

well, they've got the goods to back it up for now, so hard to fault them.
re: “The Lakers’ biggest Western rivals play in Denver.” Based on last year’s playoffs and this year’s start, this is true. It could change as the season progresses, but it hasn’t yet.
The “He’s a championship-assuring difference right now” was followed immediately by “But let’s wait and see if it stays that way.”, so it’s hard to take too much umbrage at that comment.
Relax, it’s a long season. Let’s deal with the L*kers if and when we have to. We will be full of ourselves too when we are the defending champs.
How did you guys win that?
"We scored enough points. We scored 107, they scored 105.

That's where you're wrong
it’s EASY to take umbrage at it. All you have to do is put on your red and black glasses that filter out any qualifiers of jerky-sounding Lakers statements.

oooh, It's always so much better.....
when they don’t see us coming.
I would love it if the rest of teams in the league don’t have the Blazers on their radar until it was too late. Love it.
Anyway, I agree with douglast. When you are on top and can back up your game, you can say what you want. That’s part of the priviledge of being on top.
Nothing Witty Here, move along.

Bill Plaschke's middle name is "Homer"
But slowly things happen that they cannot help and the Blazers Fellowship of the Ring begins to break apart
Wait
the guy who said last season that because Oden is a tremendous bust, Bynum is the defining center of his generation is a homer? Huh-uh. I refuse to believe it.

Yeah, but his name really is Homer
But slowly things happen that they cannot help and the Blazers Fellowship of the Ring begins to break apart
When your center dominates games - it tends to make you feels good about yourself
The Oden vs. Bynum match-up has the potential to be THE individual match-up of the next half decade or more. If these guys play up to their potential and big if – stay healthy. Then we should have some awesome fun watching these heavyweights battle in the post. Arrogance and smugness have always followed the Lakers – that is why we hate them so much.
First off...
If you read any of Plaschke’s garbage and believe it, you should check yourself at the door. I’ve seen around the horn enough times to know that Plaschke is wrong about 99% of everything dealing with sports.
Second, I like how Ron Artest is still considered relevant and a good defender. Sure, he is above average, but game-changing he is not.
Third, the Suns “vaunted” defense? They haven’t played defense since before the year 2000. No wonder a good team like the L*kers poured in 58% of their shots.
Fourth, and finally, Andrew Bynum is VASTLY over-rated. He plays with (and I hate saying it) the best player in the NBA and arguably the second best player ever. This makes you infinitely better. He also played against an incredibly soft Amare Stoudemire. Not only does Bynum have the length but easily grabbed rebound after rebound over Amare. Plaschke may love him, but he has yet to impress in this league.

I don't get what's so inflammatory about this article.
First of all, listening to Platchke talk about the Fakers would be like listening to Canzano talk about the Blazers. Secondly, it’s not like he’s calling this Faker team the greatest of all time, and neither is he overly venerating Bynum. And not once did he make a disparaging comment about the blazers.
"B-Roy is the best shooting guard I have played against"

here's another reason:
google "Sasha Vujacic (sp?) and Maria Sharapova.

Who cares if the Lakers dont feel we are their biggest rival
Why should we be at the moment? The bottom line, is I do pretty much hate them. It starts and ends there. Rivals, friends? Who CARES. Just don’t like em, period. We do not need any other titles to go along with that.
One thing that is annoying is when pompous Laker fans say, “deep down you know you love them!” Well I can understand how they would feel thats possible, since they feel that way. I however know dislike when it’s there. It’s the same type of reaction that I get when John Canzano says we Portlander’s have little brother syndrome with Seattle. Most of us do not even think of Seattle when thinking about our beloved city. Just another moron trying to make something out of something that does not exist.
With that Blazer fans, Laker fans will not feel we are rivals until we are knocking them out of the WCF’s. That does not mean a damn thing— feel free to keep the bad taste in your mouth for them.
Land Rondo.
"He needs to realize that he can't stop every shot, especially from a smaller and offensively potent player. Get your hands up, make him shoot it over you, but let him shoot every once in a while. They score a little but you stay in the game a lot. And when you stay in the game...smashy smashy!" Dave on Greg Oden
Even on around the horn, I never agree with Bill Plaschke's opinion.
He’s a pompous blowhard.
"Ain't nothin' in this world for free."
Didn't really see much to fume about
With that said, lakers’ winning streaks come to die at the Rose Garden.
Where's a reaper shirt for that one?!
Quick someone tell this guy:

The next great t-shirt idea?
just a terrible article altogether.
Seriously.
That writer should be ashamed of himself.
That was one of the worst sports articles I have ever read.
He obviously really likes Canzano and Brian T Smith, judging by the short paragraphs.
But it doesn’t make me dislike the Lakers more.
It just makes me hate short / one sentence paragraphs more.
The absolute BEST part
“That wild and crazy Suns shooting? They missed nine of their first 11 attempts. A team that had previously made a league-best half of its shots wound up shooting just 37%.”
It was one of the only factual points and it completely negates all of his subjective garbage. High powered offense like Phoenix relies on high tempo transition buckets and jump shooting. The writer talks as if the Lakers controlled the pace and slowed the game down, which is total B.S. The game turned a shooting contest, and the Suns were cold. It’s exactly the tempo that Phoenix would have wanted, they just shot terribly.
Typical homer attitude. If the other team is having an off night, it must be your team’s stellar defense that threw them off. Games where defense is the difference are usually closer than 20 points, and tend to be in the 70-85 point range. Not always, but usually.
Blazers Prophecy.
3-5 championships in next decade.
You heard it here first.
