LeBron wants Martell to give up #23
LeBron wants everyone who wears #23 to switch numbers in deference to the Great Blazer Killer. Should Martell Webster follow his lead?

I guess when lebron signs with the knicks
he will change jersey number. Don’t do it Marty unless LeBron changes first

I have to say,
I am not sure that Martell has really earned the right to wear #23 … comes across as wishful thinking to me, as he hasn’t looked too great yet this season.
earned the right?
it’s a number. Unless the team a player plays for tells him he can’t wear it, he has a right to choose any number he wants.
How did you guys win that?

Thanks to Nike
- is still inseparable from the Jordan legacy. Anyone who wears #23 (at least today, only months from Jordan’s HOF induction) is invoking Jordan’s legacy.
All I was trying to say is that it is perhaps a poor choice by Martell to wear #23, considering that we Blazer fans already have inflated expectations of his potential due to his being traded for CP3 on draft day.
LeBron wants to honor Jordan by not wearing his number
Fine. His choice. I support him fully in it.
But if Webster or any other player in the league wants to honor Jordan or anyone else by wearing #23, that’s their choice as well.
I would hate to get to a point where teams have some sort of a tryout to see if a player ‘deserves’ to be able to wear a particular number.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Okur, but we’ve determined that you are simply not enough of an offensive threat to earn the privilege of wearing Wilt Chamberlain’s #13. However, we do have Mark Eaton’s #53 available for you….”

Jordan didn't play for the Blazers
The Bulls retired his number, the rest of the teams have it available. Marty should wear whatever number makes him happy.

I thought it was pretty cool G.O. took #52...
…I don’t think he probably knew much about Buck, but it provides a nice kind of continuity: a couple of warriors working their tails off in the paint, on defense. I’m sure Buck would have loved to have had Greg’s size and reach when he was going to war with Karl Malone though. Hopefully, maybe Nate or Luke broke out a few tapes of the Blazers’ previous and much-respected # 52, and filled Greg in on the greatness of Buck.

Nobody should be able to wear #30, either.
It belongs to the great Bobby Gross, after all.

Jordan was great, but...
we are half a generation away from him being just another old guy in the past that the majority of fans will have never seen play. In ten years his highlight reels will seem as old and grainy as those of Dr. J or Wilt. Comparisons of future stars to Jordan will begin with, “Back in my day…”. Eventually only historians, statmongers and the occasional retirement village resident will whisper his name with reverence. The lack of 23’s in the league then will seem a bit silly.

yes, but
we’re not there yet. Today, I agree with LeBron. Be your own player, wear a number that doesn’t have all that baggage.
players wear the numbers they wear for all sorts of different reasons
who are we to tell them what they can and can’t wear? What may be seen as baggage to you or I may be paying homage to them, or maybe the number has a completely different personal meaning that we don’t know about. Who knows. Who cares.
If I wore a number on my back every time I went to work, I wouldn’t want anyone telling me how or why to choose that number – that would be my right to pick what I want for whatever reason I want.
How did you guys win that?

Then why is he taking Dr. J's number :)
But slowly things happen that they cannot help and the Blazers Fellowship of the Ring begins to break apart
Can I wear 'pi'?

And pi is irrational
Maybe it should be worn by – oh, I can’t say it.

Jordan is a Jerk
That is why the number shouldn’t be retired league wide. He did alot of insulting at his HOF induction and doesn’t deserve that honor, he should have to be a quality person too.

I thought it was stupid when Martell changed it in the first place
I think it’s great LeBron is doing this. 23 should be retired from the league like 42 is in baseball.
What a tool...
He chose 23, then he changed it, and then changed it back to 23 again.
Now he says people shouldn’t be allowed to have 23 after he’s chosen it twice…

Requiring all franchises to retire the number 23 just because of MJ is patently stupid! IMHO
I think this is one of the most ridiculous ideas I have ever heard, and I hope that the Blazers have enough sense to throw this idea into the appropriate receptacle where it belongs, and I don’t mean a trash can.
I think that MJ is a blowhard egomaniac and should be disregarded for anything other than his stats.
May Martell Webster wear his number 23 BLAZER jersey for the rest of his time as a Blazer!

whats really funny is that the heat have retired jordan’s number
OMG CONSPIRACY!!!!!
He’s doing this because he’s going to sign with Miami and they don’t have 23 available.

This is silly
What does Riley want from Jordan to retire his uniform—in an organization he didn’t even play for. It makes Riley and the Heat look bush league.
It’s fine if LeBron doesn’t want to wear 23. But why doesn’t he make the change now if he feels sincere about this. And why should any other player follow his lead? Silly.
Jordan was a great player. There will be better after him—maybe even LeBron after awhile. Besides, off the court, Jordan’s nothing special, he’s just another arrogant guy and there are plenty of those to go around.
Lebron's ego is silly.
Now, if I’m not going to wear No. 23, then nobody else should be able to wear it.
I hope Martell keeps it because that’s his number.

Lebron is a d-bag.
Isn’t he changing numbers again just to create more jersey sales? What does the average athlete make on jersey sales? Anything? Does it go to the league, or do they see individual “commissions?”
Either way, who the hell is Lebron to speak for any other player? He’ll have rings in his future, I suspect, but right now he’s got nuthin.

stupid
james’ stupid idea and it would be stupid for any blazer to change his number from #23 in order to honor michael jordan. anyway, there’s not just 1 way to honor jordan.
