Hire Charles Oakley!

"I'm going to send a package to all the different teams around the league and try to set up two or three big man camps over the summer. I'd like to help today's fours and fives understand the game better."

full story

We've had lots of talk about the need for a quality big man coach, perhaps someone with more recent experience than Mo Lucas. I can't think of a tougher, harder-nosed player in the last 20 years than Oak. Can you even imagine if 10% of Oakley rubbed off on LaMarcus and Greg? I shook his hand once here in Portland, it felt like shaking hands with someone wearing a baseball mitt.

And for the record Mo Lucas may be the toughest most hard nosed player ever in the NBA.

No one has ever so completely intimidated the entire league.

I understand peoples reservations about Mo Lucas (kinda)

but saying that Mo played in a different era is both true and irrelivant to your point superfly05. I agree LMA and Oden need a little “toughening up” but how exactly does what era you played in make a difference in ability to teach toughness? Playing in a different era makes a diference in alot of ways…..but toughness is both older than the NBA itself and is learned from the best of the tough guys.

Oak is a tough S.O.B. but seriously Mo Lucas would have destroyed Oak had they both met in there primes, looks at Lucas’s Prime years stats, watch some old video of Lucas in his prime. Then do the same for charles oakley. My point is to say Mo Lucas was a beast, Oak was a very good defensive power forward, tough? yes. A beast? not quite.

Luke is one of my all time favorite Blazers and as staylost said and i agree with…..

Don't Count Out Oakley

I grew up watching the Knicks (been out west for 15 years)

Oakley was not as big as most power forwards, but he played big. He was Rodman without being a freak and without the cheapshots (that Rodman got away with).

Oakley always knew where to position himself for the rebound, and he knew how to box out guys way bigger. He certainly wasn’t an offensive players, but he was pretty much the key to the Knicks defense with Ewing for years.

by Anim8rguy on Nov 13, 2009 1:33 AM PST up reply actions

I think we all agree Oakley was really good at what he did.

It was just that we weren’t sure what the OP meant (he has further clarified that he thinks Lucas can’t really SHOW them since he is too old and fragile to get smacked around on the court) by talking about Oakley being hard nosed and tough when we already have the King of All tough scoring, hard defending, fundamental rebounding in Lucas.

how do small guy's teach big guy's how to move is my question.

I’ve seen you’ve seen we’ve all seen …(can’t make this rhyme, my apologies) the beautiful things Bayno (sp?) did w/oden.

so I’m like mmmm… ?? what gives how do little people teach big people how to move so well.

If it's just about toughness

Mo Lucas is the love child of Chuck Norris and Mr. T. If you can’t learn toughness from Lucas, ain’t nobody going to be able to teach you.

You cant post something like this and not expect at least one...

Mo Lucas’ hand is the only hand that can beat a Royal Flush.

There are no races, only countries of people Mo Lucas has beaten to different shades of black and blue.

The grass is always greener on the other side, unless Mo Lucas has been there. In that case the grass is most likely soaked in blood and tears.

There are no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, Mo Lucas lives in Oregon.

Settle down...

I wasn’t dissing Mo Lucas in any way. I was around when he was intimidating everyone, in the era when a punch was worth a foul, not a suspension. I’m just saying, Oak can still get out on the floor and work, and Luke is recuperating from serious illness and is almost 58.

I admit I have a weird soft spot in my fandom for the Ewing/Starks/Oakley/Mason era Knicks, maybe because they paralleled the Blazers in the area of being great, but not great enough to win it all.

by superfly05 on Nov 12, 2009 7:20 PM PST reply actions

I sorta agre with superfly

Mo is from another era when they played real bball. Nowadays, the NBA is so soft. I feel like we should hire more bigs like Oak but we shouldnt get rid of MO. Mo should be like the “Big Cheese” of a crew of Big Men/Center/PF coaches. Can you imagine having a team of Mo, Oak, maybe Brian Grant and anyother tuff/good players to form a coaching team for ODEN. I personally believe that part of why Dwight Howard took off is because of having Patrick Ewing to help him. Patrick is almost like a cross between Mo from the old era and Dwight from the new, as he played in both eras. And No diss to Mos toughness, that is unquestioned as far as im concerned. Hes one Tough dude!!!!

to clarify my statement...

I meant that like Drexler’s Blazers, and Pippen’s Blazers, Ewing’s Knicks went deep a lot, but had the misfortune of being great when Michael Jordan was great, or when Kobe/Shaq lucked out and got one of the worst 4th quarters from the Blazers when it mattered most.

I was just saying the Knicks had some great teams in the 90’s, but never won a championship

It's the Worm!

We have to acknowledge the work Bill Bayno and Oden have done this last summer. Things seem to be progressing just fine.

That would be the wrong kind of Attitude

I grew up watching the Knicks, and Oakly was one of the best role players in the game for about a 5 year stretch.

He was a total blue collar player that did 3 basic things:

- Played tough defense — which is what the Knicks were built around
- Rebounded the ball
- He always came to play hard

Oakly was THE man back in the day. He also had an awesome attitude. I don’t ever remember hearing about any scandals with him. He was clean, and damn he could get rebounds and defend.

I wouldn’t dis having him, but he would only be good for teaching defense.

If it wasn’t for him, the Knicks would never have gotten out of the first round.

Look, if nothing else,

Can you just imagine Oden with an Oakley hairstyle? That would be so badass.

Oden + Dream Shake = Amazing

Akeem coached Kobe this summer so he is available for coaching. Imagine alittle the of the Dream rubbing off on Greg! Ohhhh gives me chills

by Merlyn on Nov 13, 2009 5:34 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah I was going to say the same thing. What is Hakeem doing these days? Probably nothing. Paul Allen has money. Hire Hakeem. Maurice Lucas is a good big man coach but Hakeem would be better for Oden. Hakeem could show Oden how to score in the low post. Oden doesn’t really need to be taught anything else because he already knows how to rebound and block shots. He’s also staying out of foul trouble. Add a good offensive game to what Greg Oden already is and you’ve got the best center in the league.

Oakley and Mo

Both bad men. It would have been great to watch them match up.
