JD 11/12/09- And the Triumphant Return of Many Things

Greg Oden is back, I think we last saw him this way somewhere in his senior season in high school.

The Blazers are Back - I heard best start in a decade? Touche. All this after half the bandwagon fell off after only 6 games.

I'm back posting in this old junk drawer. Oddly enough I have not posted on this site in 7 months. Oddly enough I have had one of those old ball and chain thingys for about, 7 months.

Star-divide

We shall call this the Triumphant Return.

No more about the blazers eh. You can go over to the timberwolves site for that. I'm here because you want a place to post pictures about what you have been doing for the last 7 months.

I got lots of pics. I have been doing alot of hiking around the old pacific northwest. Today, instead of doing so many things of responsibility that I no doubt should of have been doing, I went and visited the Bonneville Dam. And had myself a lunchables ontop of a little hill that overlooks where the Army Corp of Engineers moved an entire town to accomodate for the 2nd power station. Amazing.

Almost as amazing as the fact that I am a business owner. Somebody wake me up, what do you mean I have to do my own taxes?...

I went crabbing. My girlfriend went to bed at the normal time and was for some reason shocked when I came to bed at 6 am. Did I mention I had like 20 crabs all cooked and ready to eat just sitting in some ice? This hotel had a dock with a card key locked gate so only the hotel guests could drop their pots off this dock as the tide came in and out. I used frozen mink for bait of course. Sure enough my circle type pots were pulling crabs all night and their baited box soakers werent so lucky.

What else...I miss you guys... All of you, blazer fans all over the world. Sometimes when my girlfriend breaks up with me I get all sad and require pints of microbrew. I adorn a pinwheel on my shirt and perhaps my hat and no matter where I go someone either wants to talk about the scarlett and black or at least has a matching symbol of my portland team on their head perhaps.

A funny story before I go.

My friend Colin and I used to play on the same city league basketball team. I have since dropped out but Colin still plays once a week. A few weeks ago they had a game against a team with better record and knew they would have to work extra hard to try and get a victory. It was a back and forth battle until one man took over the game for the opposition. His smooth dribble and silky smooth step jack jumpers had obviously been honed over years of playing. He passed to his teammates when they were open, he knew when to pull up on the fast break. At which point he would wave off a screen and take his man one on one, laying it up everytime.

I thought I recognized him but I just couldn't be sure. Could he really play on a team of mostly younger men on a city wide rec league? Colin went up to the man and shook his hand, confident he knew the mans name. He gave Colin a business card, turns out he sells insurance too. The mans name....

very impressed so far

makes our loss to them respectable

by broyposse on Nov 12, 2009 1:02 AM PST up reply actions

yeah, that's easily our least annoying loss so far

We should have won— we were on fire, just didn’t play any semblance of D, but its still a road game against a likely playoff team. Those aren’t killer losses.

by jksnake99 on Nov 12, 2009 1:03 AM PST up reply actions

that everyone seems to trust Oden a little more too

by broyposse on Nov 12, 2009 1:05 AM PST up reply actions

I see the trust there as well

Everyone looking into him more, but it’s still not enough and he’s still missed quite often. In time!

by Mortimer on Nov 12, 2009 1:06 AM PST up reply actions

It will be interesting to see once we play some good teams

Oden’s Defensive Rating is outstanding right now— teams aren’t scoring on us nearly as often when he’s been in.

by jksnake99 on Nov 12, 2009 1:07 AM PST up reply actions

i didn't get to watch till middle 3rd

driving home…but in those instance, GO should play more physical

by broyposse on Nov 12, 2009 1:15 AM PST up reply actions

That one baseline one was good

If Oden wasn’t blocking a lot of shots this year already, I’d worry about him not being as aggressive there, but since we’re working on him not fouling needlessly, I’m happy with him letting it go and not bumping him.

by Mortimer on Nov 12, 2009 1:15 AM PST up reply actions

yeah, given that Oden had zero fouls, I would have liked to see him go after that one

but in general, you can live with the occasional play like that to keep him on the court.

by jksnake99 on Nov 12, 2009 1:17 AM PST up reply actions

I think we’re all fine with that.

free bayless

by Cablinasian on Nov 12, 2009 1:17 AM PST up reply actions

No

Oden must stop every point by all means possible. If he fouls, so be it— those 2 points are worth more than 1 foul on Oden.

Big Al doesn't look good at all

He shoulda’ been attacking Oden, force him to foul him. Instead, he took face up jumpers.

That'd be the best thing for their future

If ya ain’t gonna win it all and you don’t got enough guys that you’re developing with a chance to win it all in the future, do what it takes to get those guys.

Go be in the lottery and get 2 lottery picks. Would be sweet for Utah, lame for everyone else.

by Mortimer on Nov 12, 2009 1:11 AM PST up reply actions

how insane would it be if they both missed the playoffs? Both considered up and coming quite recently.

Its very possible though— LAL/SAS/PDX/DAL/DEN/PHX are pretty much playoff locks at this point. I think HOU is definitely a playoff team. That leaves 1 spot for UTH/NOH/LAC/OKC.

by jksnake99 on Nov 12, 2009 1:09 AM PST up reply actions

I think both will do better

I do agree with those that say Utah has been overrated for a few years now.

Still, Deron is great, and they’re well coached. AK47 is playing good as well.

by Mortimer on Nov 12, 2009 1:09 AM PST up reply actions

He's made more 3's than Shaq ever did

Not even in his PRIME did Shaq make as many 3’s!

by Mortimer on Nov 12, 2009 1:12 AM PST up reply actions

he was great tonight

made 3 threes, had 5 dimes and blocked 3 shots.

by jksnake99 on Nov 12, 2009 1:11 AM PST up reply actions

I know.

He’s had some great games. I think he’s at 25 threes so far. He would actually fit pretty well into a lineup with Oden and Miller.

Just saying.

by Nick Van Excellent on Nov 12, 2009 1:15 AM PST up reply actions

I think he would

But he would never get that many minutes to get the shots he’s getting in PHX.

by Mortimer on Nov 12, 2009 1:17 AM PST up reply actions

Sure, if he can make it

As far as I could tell last year, Frye had the green light to shoot 3’s, he just didn’t do it much AND didn’t play much anyways.

by Mortimer on Nov 12, 2009 1:19 AM PST up reply actions

by Mortimer on Nov 12, 2009 1:20 AM PST up reply actions

green light to shoot 3s was not enough

that green light should have been combined with a RED light to shoot 22 foot 2s.

by jksnake99 on Nov 12, 2009 1:38 AM PST up reply actions

He just never got minutes. It does make me wonder if Aldridge should start taking threes.

by Nick Van Excellent on Nov 12, 2009 1:18 AM PST up reply actions

we ran some 1-4 high in the third/fourth tonight. He was standing at the three point line, isolated with Roy. I wonder if he’ll take threes in that set?

free bayless

by Cablinasian on Nov 12, 2009 1:19 AM PST up reply actions

I guess.

I can’t figure it out. There must be some sort of reasonable explanation.

by Nick Van Excellent on Nov 12, 2009 1:24 AM PST up reply actions

how are you certain that it wasn’t Frye failing to be in the correct place? I dunno. I struggle to say that our coaches just weren’t smart enough.

free bayless

by Cablinasian on Nov 12, 2009 1:24 AM PST up reply actions

he would immediately come in and start shooting long twos

Obviously I’m not privy to what they were telling him, but I doubt they were hammering it in nearly enough.

by jksnake99 on Nov 12, 2009 1:27 AM PST up reply actions

I didn't think Frye felt as comfortable doing it

His percentage wasn’t all that great either, but I still attribute that to just not getting minutes.

3’s always are better than long 2’s, but if a guy isn’t comfortable shooting that 3…

by Mortimer on Nov 12, 2009 1:27 AM PST up reply actions

Our coaches have gotten Outlaw to shoot a lot more 3's at a good rate

I really don’t see our coaches having a problem with guys shooting 3’s, with how reliant we’ve been on it over the years.

by Mortimer on Nov 12, 2009 1:27 AM PST up reply actions

It's a major part of our game plan after all

And we’re clearly okay with some of our PFs shooting jumpers.

by Mortimer on Nov 12, 2009 1:28 AM PST up reply actions

that's exactly the problem

Those jumpers should be threes, not 20+ footers.

Frye should have been told to NEVER shoot a 20+ foot two pointer.

by jksnake99 on Nov 12, 2009 1:31 AM PST up reply actions

I guess we'll never know

Not really sumthin’ I see as a big problem. I worry more about LMA shooting long 2’s.

by Mortimer on Nov 12, 2009 1:37 AM PST up reply actions

its the same issue

Those LMA long twos should either be eliminated or they should become threes.

by jksnake99 on Nov 12, 2009 1:40 AM PST up reply actions

I know we think so and agree

But I don’t think LMA is comfortable shooting that shot yet.

by Mortimer on Nov 12, 2009 1:40 AM PST up reply actions

If he's open, he's open

He can hit it, and it hurts the offense to NOT shoot the open jumper when a guy can make it.

I’d rather that he just not be in the position to be open there.

by Mortimer on Nov 12, 2009 1:46 AM PST up reply actions

wait, what?

Frye blocked 3 shots in one game? Wasn’t that like his entire blocked shot total for 2 years in Portland? I realize he didn’t get minutes here, but he was a defensive sieve (and fouling machine) when he did play.

Still, happy for the guy. Phoenix was the perfect team for him.

I think they are right, Cab

I think he would be the #1 pick if the draft was today, and pretty close to a consensus. We’ve heard this reported by multiple media sources. Most NBA GMs would take Durant. That’s just reality.

by jksnake99 on Nov 12, 2009 1:33 AM PST up reply actions

It wasn’t that they said it. It was how they said it. (implication was that Oden was a bust).

a lot of GMs would take Durant, yes. I still take Oden, and I think management would as well.

free bayless

by Cablinasian on Nov 12, 2009 1:34 AM PST up reply actions

That's fine, but I think ~25-28 NBA GMs would take Durant

Given Oden’s history— micro and fouls— is just too risky. Not that NBA GMs are smart. Oden may still be the right pick. Who knows.

by jksnake99 on Nov 12, 2009 1:37 AM PST up reply actions

If Oden stays healthy

Even with the foul problems I think that changes this year.

by Mortimer on Nov 12, 2009 1:40 AM PST up reply actions

I hadn't looked at KD's stats yet this year

He’s shooting 20% from 3. Yikes.

Averaging 2 points more, and a rebound more, everything else the same. A:TO ratio still equal. Half a steal more, almost 2 a game, that’s nice.

Not much different yet, though it seems he’s getting to the line a grip.

by Mortimer on Nov 12, 2009 1:44 AM PST up reply actions

His 3 pt % will go up, for sure

Maybe not as high as last year though. His TS% may end up being higher than last year because of the FTs. He’s not made huge strides though. He’s not LeBron.

Tough to judge his defensive improvement or lack thereof until at least half the season is over, but so far his adjusted plus minus is very good.

by jksnake99 on Nov 12, 2009 1:46 AM PST up reply actions

he looks better defensively. He’s at least trying this year.

free bayless

by Cablinasian on Nov 12, 2009 1:51 AM PST up reply actions

That's good to see

I got no doubts he can get better defensively, everyone does who tries.

I don’t think he’ll ever be a playmaker and, judging from his stats, he’s exactly the same. Just on a cold streak, shooting wise, which will change.

by Mortimer on Nov 12, 2009 1:53 AM PST up reply actions

he had one nice play where he blocked a jump shot and took it back for a dunk. He is definitely more active and moving around, trying to make things happen. i remember Travis going off against them last year and Durant checked out about two defensive possessions in.

free bayless

by Cablinasian on Nov 12, 2009 1:55 AM PST up reply actions

For sure.

A 10-10 center who plays defense is way better than a 25-10 small forward who doesn’t pass.

by Nick Van Excellent on Nov 12, 2009 1:45 AM PST up reply actions

eh...

Would you take Erick Dampier over Carmelo Anthony?

by jksnake99 on Nov 12, 2009 1:47 AM PST up reply actions

I definitely think a big who plays good to great defense and rebounds

Is more effective than a perimeter guy who only scores.

I do not think it’s a coincidence that the Nuggets became a very good team once Nene was healthy, and Billups was on the team. I don’t think that is Melo.

Melo HELPS, and he’s an amazing scorer. But I just don’t think it impacts the game as much as interior defense, shotblocking, and rebounding on both ends.

by Mortimer on Nov 12, 2009 1:50 AM PST up reply actions

If Noah could keep up his current production maybe....

but I don’t really consider him a great defender.

I think Anthony is entirely overrated until he becomes a better defender and passer… and I think he’s already a much better defender and passer than Durant.

there’s a difference in a post-up center and a garbage man Biedrins/Dampier. The post-up center makes life easy on the entire offense. Open shots galore.

I dunno, the defense really matters

Plus I don’t consider the RIGHT NOW of Oden, except in these academic debates. Oden will continue to get better, and I know for sure I’d rather have Oden going into the future over Kaman.

by Mortimer on Nov 12, 2009 2:01 AM PST up reply actions

sure, of course

Its dangerous to assume Oden’s foul problems will go away though, as nice as these past few games have been. Remember that we are dealing with historic foul problems— much worse than great big men of the past.

by jksnake99 on Nov 12, 2009 2:03 AM PST up reply actions

Very very true

But, it is something that can improve easily through a few different avenues.

Respect from refs, league pressure, Oden just NOT DOING THAT, ODEN DON’T, etc.

by Mortimer on Nov 12, 2009 2:04 AM PST up reply actions

He has looked much less anxious on the defensive end in the last couple of games...

Its nice to see him back off a little and realize he can’t stop everything. He is definitely getting better at picking his spots to try and make a play. He certainly isn’t out of the woods yet though, a lot of improvement is left in that area…

If we had a game for the title tomorrow

I may still pick Oden because of his current defense and hope he can manage to stay out of foul trouble, over somewhat-guaranteed 36 minutes of Kaman.

Having Joel helps that, though he ain’t much good at staying on the floor this year either.

by Mortimer on Nov 12, 2009 2:03 AM PST up reply actions

Kaman musta' had a few slippage games

He’s down to 21.7ppg and 9.6boards.

Oh man, if Kaman can stay healthy and keeps playing like this

Of course Kaman. 24 and 10+ and blocks out of your center? You can get another perimeter scorer much easier than a center scoring and rebounding that much.

Kaman isn’t a dominant defender, but he’s doing really well. He’s a more old fashioned center, not good at moving around though.

Rounding up slightly

2 seasons ago he averaged 16ppg, 13rebs, and 3 blocks. He didn’t seem to get a lot of attention for it, though people noticed he was doing much better than the year before and it was attributed to a new treatment he was doing for his ADD-like problems.

He stopped taking medicine and tried new stuff. Different mental exercises and junk. I dunno how it works…

Bayless does look better this year, anybody with two eyes can see that. He still has a way to go, but there is improvement. Its just the insistence on using PER to prove his point that hurt him. Also, looking ahead to moving Blake so JB could be the backup was pretty out there. He is right that Bayless does deserve some run, 5-10 minutes + garbage time seems fair until this strange two point guard starting unit gets scrapped. Rudy and JB do make a decent combo, but I don’t think Rudy is ready to take on consistent play making responsibilities just so Bayless can play as an off guard…

Thu, Nov 12

Oden had 18 points and 11 rebounds in three quarters to lead the Trail Blazers to a 107-84 victory over the Timberwolves on Wednesday.

Advice: Oden was the No. 1 overall pick in 2007. But he missed his first season because if a knee injury, then was underwhelming in 61 games for the Blazers last season. Against the smaller Timberwolves, he looked like the dominant player he was at Ohio State. Oden commanded double- and triple-teams in the post, challenged shots on defense and threw down dunk after rim-rattling dunk against a Timberwolves team that is looking more confused and overwhelmed by the day.

Ryan Gomes was the only player on the T-Wolves with a + on the +/-
He had +12 in 32 minutes of play.
Since the Blazers won by 24 this means that the Blazers were +34 in the 12 minutes that Gomes didn’t play.

Against the Trail Blazers (6-3), who embarrassed Minnesota 146-105 in Portland on Monday night, the Wolves let a seven-point advantage slip away with eight minutes left in the second quarter and never led again.

“Coach knows he’ll beat me on the golf course, but he wouldn’t have a chance in the bowling alley, " Paul said.

And player and coach end their assertion with toothy smiles.

This little spat isn’t going to threaten their relationship, which almost seems like it was made in heaven.

The two like to chide each other about their hobbies — Scott’s golf and Paul’s bowling, but that might be their only source of disagreement.

On and off the court, the pair has become a formidable duo. They even appear joined at the hip, a former NBA champion player turned coach, trying to relive his championship past through his young point guard, and a young guard soaking up all the knowledge he can.

“Coach is my guy, " Paul said. “He’s more than just my coach. He’s my friend, my mentor, somebody that I look up to and somebody I have the ultimate respect for. I’m glad that we have that relationship, but we never let our relationship off the court affect us on the court.”

Back from my H1N1 vaccination. Eat dust, swine flu.

So far no side effects at all, although I did get the boosted version that is expected to only require 1 shot and work pretty fast. Then again, I never had problems with vaccinations. My blood eats that up and kills bad germs.

Does Burger King have the same lame service in the US?

I had some coupons and I like much of their food, but their service is always sub-par even for big burger chains. Not unfriendly, just dumb and unorganized. The lady was piling up 3 or 4 orders at once, setting up trays but never finishing them. While waiting for the right food to arrive from the kitchen she e.g. could have gotten the fries, but nooooo. Awful. And it’s about the same experience every time I drag myself into one of their joints. I blame that private equity company that owned them for cutting costs on process training.

I once had a girl quit her job at Burger King literally in the middle of my order. She just took off her work shirt and walked out the door while I stood there dumbfounded. Eventually her manager came out when other people behind me started making noise. The funniest part was she didn’t have a car so she was just waiting at the bus stop across the street, smoking. You could see her easily from any part of the restaurant.

This was at the Burger King by Sunset Highway. I believe it is in the same little mini-mall with a goodwill now.

Hollinger PER diem part on the Blazers
For a team that’s allegedly struggling, the Blazers continue to put up some awfully impressive results. Thursday’s rout of Minnesota moved Portland to 6-3 and gives it the best scoring margin in the West at plus-8.7 per game. Early-season losses to Houston and Atlanta currently look much more respectable in light of recent events, especially since the Blazers aren’t the only hopeful contender to show a few warts in the opening weeks. (Witness the struggles of Cleveland, Orlando and San Antonio, for instance.)

Portland also catches a break with the current run of its schedule, one that should help the Blazers get a leg up in the Northwest Division race. With New Orleans and Utah looking unexpectedly crummy, a road tilt in Atlanta on Monday is the only game of the next 10 in which they won’t be favored.

I don’t consider this squad a finished product by any means, and, in particular, I’m not sure the three-guard lineup of Andre Miller, Steve Blake and Brandon Roy has staying power beyond its initial “shake things up” effect. But the hand-wringing in Portland lately is entirely a result of the team’s lofty initial expectations. Not everyone can start the season like the Celtics.

Yeah, I'd prefer everyone in the same thread...

Right now, the gameday thread has all the excitement and little of the personality. The JD Gameday thread has most of the personality and little excitement. It makes sense to put the peanut butter and chocolate back together.

Plus it’s hard to argue that BE isn’t clique-ish when a group of users say “we don’t want to deal with the regular folks, we’ll have our own gameday thread instead”.

I totally understand that I have a completely different opinion about this than most JD’ers.

Yep, though I do understand why they don’t like to deal with the random trolls. That can certainly be tiring.

Perhaps as a middle ground, BE could consider a few gameday-thread-only mods… a couple lifers who are regulars in the gameday threads but wouldn’t really mod the rest of the time. Seems that the current mods aren’t gameday folks (as far as I’ve seen at least).

Honestly though, there really hasn’t been much trolling yet this season.

i agree with this and will move back to the gameday thread

my reasons before was purely technical.

for some reason, when i go on the gameday thread with lots of posters with lots of post, it made my streaming horrid…

little posters with more post didn’t affect it too much.

anyhow, i will stay to carry on the Woooot Train…

Great advice Timmay

Very cool.

I know folks are enjoying the JD Gameday so I hate being the one to say “come on, guys”. But the truth is, I like seeing everyone in one place. It’s also a good way for newbies and veterans to talk to each other.

Gameday threads have been quieter so far this year. I’m sure they’ll pick up later. I have a slower dual-core machine and streaming is a-ok… the coders seemed to redo the streaming comments so they’re staggered a little more. I’m surprised it’s been rough on your machine, even SO has said it’s better now.

The really funny part is there are folks complaining about the negativity in gameday threads. But it’s probably not as bad as previous years. Except Timbo, who really seems to be harder on Greg than anyone else.

I think the main reason JDers were avoiding the Gameday threads was the rampant pessimism

fortunately most of that pessimism should be gone considering how well Portland has done recently.

2008 Civil War: Oregon 65 - Oregon State 38

by cloudydays on Nov 12, 2009 2:01 PM PST up reply actions

It's still there to some extent

It’ll always be there. I’m sure it’ll pop back up with the next loss (it’s bubbling under with how unhappy people are with the current starting lineup).

Some pessimism is reasonable, of course. But probably the best way to combat unreasonable pessimism is good intelligent conversation around it…. with the JD folks posting elsewhere, the ratio is reduced right now.

Besides, nothing is fixed in the gameday thread if people just go make a new thread when they’re not happy with it. Better to flag posts and mail Dave if you’re not happy with the thread right now. I do understand that’s a painful solution vs posting in a different thread… But if the JD gameday threads continued, they’d get more popular. Then more people will visit them. Then they’ll start having the same problem. So the problem starts anew.

I completely understand the wish for the equivalent of “Gameday thread with people I know and trust” though. It’s natural after a community starts to form. Not sure it’s a feasible concept without creating a level of exclusivity on the site.

A good, sturdy SBN ignore function would render this entire thread moot.

by Timmay! on Nov 12, 2009 2:15 PM PST up reply actions

I haven't been around the JD gameday threads

I agree, everyone go to the main page gameday thread. We can’t be cliquish.

Just go make the main gameday threads rad instead of letting the schmucks make ’em lame.

They might get less than a JD, Timmay, but they get that many posts in 2 hours or so. The JD takes at least 3 hours to get a 1000 comments.

I think the gameday threads are awesome

but I have trouble reading 800 comments, and watching the game at the same time. They are both very entertaining, but I have to concentrate on the game. I tend to peek at the threads at halftime or other breaks, but that’s it. I guess I am not a very good multi-tasker.

Warriors will trade Jackson
Coach Don Nelson said before Wednesday’s game that the relationship between the Warriors and forward Stephen Jackson is irreconcilable and that his departure is imminent.
“At some point,” Nelson said, “and I don’t know when, we have to (trade him). He asked to be traded, and we’d like to trade him. That’s if we can.”

Now remembering that they had to trade Mike Dunleavy and Troy Murphy to get him and the since also shipped out Al Harrington which was a bad trade to begin with, their GM should be a hot candidate for Dunce of the Year.

I learned today a crazy killer is active in my close neighborhood

And a very cold-blooded one to boot. He (probably a male) kidnapped a woman on a public hiking day out of about 500 people unnoticed, dragged her deeper into the woods, raped her, strangled her, removed all clothes and burned her to make identification harder which didn’t work. She only got found 3 weeks later by a hiker with a dog, and the police has only very vague ideas who it might have been. A horse rider has seen someone suspicious, but that’s really not much to work with. A surveillance camera for wildlife also captured someone on film, but that person was cleared.

Sorry about the shooting, a friend of mine was stabbed in Cambridge. All things you can’t prepare for like that suck.

I am going to have dinner with some of my friends today, and tonight is “Nacho Night”

My job is to bring some kind of meat to put on the Nachos, what should I bring?

You can also buy, at zoupans, wild boar sausage cut it up, or grind it with a food processor. It’d be “different”. For nachos, I’d cut it up and then braise (put it in liquid—water, chix stock, beef stock, etc) with some toms, dried chiles and maybe chocolate.

Sorry. I can’t. I am currently in a mad dash to build a closet.

You only need someone strong on the outside, and an assistant on the inside (unless you are a pro.) The person on the inside can shim and level, while the person on the outside nails/screws. Again, a pro can prolly do it alone.

I get the paper, so I don't care!

by Name's Ash on Nov 12, 2009 3:35 PM PST up reply actions

put the window up. Get a feeling for the center. Nail/screw in top corner. Do some more centering and leveling. Once level, nail/screw in opposite corner. Finish off with some more nails/screws.

Are you replacing or are these new? I have only done new. I think there is a trick to doing replacements. Pros colapse the existing window by taking it apart, then they cut the fin off the replacement, and they screw through the side of the window frame.

I get the paper, so I don't care!

I don't care about the battles with Apple

The legal issues haven’t affected the operation at all. Apple had a hissy fit over inclusion of multi-touch but backed off on filing a lawsuit.

Palm app catalogue better in the past month….about 500 apps. Still looking for a good bartending one though.

REAL multitasking….functional keyboard……love mine. My iPhone co-workers and I get into plenty of battles about it.

OT: Is Henry Abbott phased out of TrueHoop (by his own decision, or by ESPN's)?

http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop

Look at all the contributors to the right. Or are they expanding the blogging format since a lot of their stuff isn’t enough for a full article, and they can’t tweet anymore what they want?

Yeah, that “blogging network” idea fell a bit on its face. Not sure if it has driven ad revenue, but apart from the blogs getting a bit more promotion I don’t think it has helped the “TrueHoop Brand”. Arnovitz is a very solid contributor to TrueHoop, but what are they doing aside from doing around the league bullets that they could have done and still do with non-associated blogs anyway?

Another note on Twitter

Content providers like ESPN and the FOX/IGN sites in general love Twitter much more than say Google News, since people will still click through the sent links to their sites. 140 characters is enough to promote a story, but hardly to say all about it. Of course what they don’t love is people NOT clicking through because their content writers already wrote all that is to know in the tweets. Hence the new policy by ESPN.

But slowly things happen that they cannot help and the Blazers Fellowship of the Ring begins to break apart

by Norsktroll on Nov 12, 2009 3:23 PM PST up reply actions

I'd argue the blog network has hurt TrueHoop.

Instead of linking to the best content, it’s been linked to the network sites. It was clearly about the money for the ESPN suits.

Travis Outlaw, the Funnel Cake of the Blazers

by 22baylor on Nov 12, 2009 4:14 PM PST up reply actions

"Give Thy servant an understanding heart to judge Thy people and to know good and evil."1 Kings 3:9

One account, known as the Judgment of Solomon, has two mothers who came before Solomon to resolve a quarrel about which was the true mother of a baby. (The other’s baby died in the night and each claims the surviving child as hers.) When Solomon suggests dividing the living child in two with a sword, the true mother is revealed to him because she is willing to give up her child to the lying woman rather than have the child killed. Solomon then declares the woman who shows the compassion is the true mother, and gives the baby back to her.

The TNT broadcast team has become nearly insufferable for me at this point. I don’t want to hear Reggie Miller’s thoughts on Lebron’s free agency prospects for 48 minutes. I don’t want to hear that for two minutes.

My team went to the playoffs in my first year.

We can disagree in one thread and agree in another

I just grumbled over here about how it seems impossible that Reggie could be such a good player and such a terrible broadcast commentator.

Then they got so distracted with Lebron that they were missing calls in the game itself. That’s their primary job!

I’m watching recordings on the DVR now.

Couple things though— Oden as a rookie last year was nearly three years older than Bynum as a rookie which makes a huge difference. Also, Bynum hasn’t really improved that much from his third year— Since that 3rd season, at age 20, he’s been a major force when healthy.

fine, it was a plane full of kids that crashed… kids and Lakers (if Kobe’s still allowed near them in Colorado) and the Lakers took all the parachute and left the kids to plummet to their doom.. but the kids ended up OK and the lakers all have horrible Leg injuries from inexperienced parachute landings… HAPPY?

by skywaker9 on Nov 12, 2009 10:21 PM PST reply actions

John Canzano shows us how insightful he is
He’s 21 years old, and Superbad is his favorite movie, too. Anthony Palmer lives with his parents in Northeast Portland, and is a big Trail Blazers fan. When he’s not going to school he works part time with a plumbing company.

I thought of him on Thursday because Palmer is a local college upperclassman who is the same age as the Blazers young center. And if we’re looking for context, it’s worth noting that this is about where Greg Oden might be in life if he weren’t 7-feet tall and gifted with a basketball.

Oden had 18 points and 11 rebounds on Wednesday. For the first time this season he had more on-court smiles (one) than fouls (zero) during a game. And if you’re like me, you spent Thursday wondering what the most encouraging part of Oden’s recent improvement has been.

The points and rebounds are terrific. And the work Oden put in with assistant Bill Bayno is paying dividends. But what happens tonight against New Orleans is going to tell you as much about Oden as you’ve learned while he was beating up on Minnesota and Memphis.

Excellent idea.

Folks, please, if this guy grates on you, write the mods or Dave with your concerns. With all of this chitchat and making the guy the butt of jokes, it’s starting to sound very gossipy and insider-ish and cliquey around here. Not only does Dave hate that, but is that what you want BE to become? A place that is hostile to newcomers (even if it feels justified)? Just let the mods deal with it.

There have been times in the past when a poster got the benefit of the doubt because they were treated rudely by the community, and this is starting to feel like one of those times.

by Corvid on Nov 12, 2009 11:16 PM PST up reply actions

I agree with your main point

but disagree with the application to this set of circumstances. I agree, BE should not be cliquey/hostile to new folks. But to steal and warp Dave’s BE is a community beach analogy, if there were regulars who frequented and enjoyed the beach and some new guy came in, drank by himself and threw his cans down, left the mess for others to clean up, the lifeguards appeared to be letting it slide, and repeated this behavior on a regular basis, I think there would be an issue.

Ya, I understand

I’m not real wild about the beer cans either. At this point, I just think talking to the lifeguards is more productive than throwing stones at the beer guy. I also think the lifeguards are dealing with things, but it’ll take a little bit of time before we see results.

I can see him getting distracted by his baby point guard and the Blazers and just pulling up his homilies in the spur of the moment. I bet the church elders are befuddled about what to do with Dave.
