ESPN Future Power Rankings: Blazers #1
On paper, no other team possesses as bright a future as the Portland Trail Blazers. It all starts with the players. Nobody, not even Oklahoma City, can match the stable of young talent the Blazers have built.

there is a LOT more
Some other interesting tidbits:
The top five are:
1. Blazers (effusive praise for Allen)
2. Orlando (basically, Dwight Howard)
3. Lakers (boosted by being in LA, Bryant’s likely longevity, and Bynum)
4. Thunder (similar to the Blazers, but with more cap space and less resources)
5. Heat (super desirable destination, Dwayne Wade, Beasley)
- Utah is 6th. Williams is awesome, but seems a little high to me.
- Cleveland is 9th, and this is with the assumption James stays. Hollinger and Ford don’t like the roster, don’t like the front office, and don’t much like the coach. It should be noted Hollinger has recently suggested last season’s record may have been a fluke, and this really is a 55-win team, not a 65-70 win juggernaut. One plus is an owner willing to spend, but I imagine that changes in a hurry if James leaves and revenues plummet.
- Denver is only 10th, despite having a pretty loaded, young roster and an owner that is willing to dance around the luxury tax line. Sounds like they got penalized for past ‘thuggishness’.
- They talk about it here a little, but there is a general conventional wisdom forming that Chris Paul is angry and may try and force his way out in the next couple of years. That franchise (23rd despite having one of the five best players) has locked itself into a totally impossible and inflexible position.

Full Blazer Section
“On paper, no other team possesses as bright a future as the Portland Trail Blazers. It all starts with the players. Nobody, not even Oklahoma City, can match the stable of young talent the Blazers have built. Brandon Roy is already a superstar, and joining him are potential stars like LaMarcus Aldridge (24), Greg Oden (21, even if he looks more like 51), Nicolas Batum (20) and Martell Webster (22). That doesn’t even count the other assets the Blazers have that could eventually pan out, such as talented second-year benchwarmer Jerryd Bayless and a veritable farm team in Europe that includes Joel Freeland, Petteri Koponen and Victor Claver.
Portland also gets strong grades in other categories. The management under GM Kevin Pritchard has been rock-solid, with the only minor quibble being the decision to draft Oden ahead of Kevin Durant — a decision, one should remember, that all 30 GMs were prepared to make, even if a lot of fans and analysts weren’t. In terms of money, the Blazers have no cap room to speak of for the foreseeable future, but being owned by one of the world’s wealthiest men in a rabid city where sellouts are the norm means the Blazers can comfortably go into luxury tax and beyond should the need arise.
Portland market didn’t score as highly in the market category — witness Hedo Turkoglu’s about-face — as sad, dreary winters, the nation’s highest state taxes and a relative lack of diversity for a major metropolitan area limit its attractiveness to free agents. They stay in the middle of the pack in this category largely due to Allen’s largesse, with first-rate team facilities, and the fact that a lot of players grow to like the place once they’ve been there — it helped bring Steve Blake back, for instance.
The draft is where Portland scored poorly, but even that is a positive in a sense — with such a bright future, it can expect to pick in the mid-to-late 20s in coming seasons. "
Rest of the top 15:
2.) Magic
3.) Lakers
4.) Thunder
5.) Heat
6.) Jazz
7.) Bulls
8.) Spurs
9.) Cavs
10.) Nuggs
11.) Clippers
12.) Celtics
13.) Nets
14.) Rockets
15.) Pistons
I found this analysis to be pretty interesting given the fact that they took five major factors (players, management, money, market, and draft) into consideration. All speculation of course; but definitely informed, intelligent speculation.

Nuggets and Cavs should be flipped
Melo has one more year on his deal after this season, so at least next season is guaranteed to be bright, and they have more young guys with potential like Lawson and JR Smith. Utah seems high, but there’s a sharp dropoff after the 4th spot and they’re probably expecting them to get at least one young prospect for Boozer’s contract. I would have put the Bulls above them and maybe Miami, but that’s such a free agent magnet and they’ll have a ton of cap space if Wade does leave. If it weren’t for the fact that something always seems to go wrong, I’d say the Clippers should be 8th. I’m surprised the Nets are so low considering they have Harris, Lopez (ridiculously underrated), but I think they didn’t give teams points for “Lebron could go there.”
Your confusing thesis has captured my attention. Tell me more.

i always forget how young this team is, but when they put it out like that( oden 21, aldridge 24, batum 20, marty(who feels like he is an old vet and been around for a while) 22). this team has so much growing still to do, it’s just amazing how good they are already.
I'm just coolin'

"There are a few teams you have to watch out for in the fourth quarter."
"Yeah, but Portland definitely is not one of them."
-New Orleans Hornets broadcasters at the end of the third quarter with the Hornets leading 74-59. Portland later ends up winning 97-89.
"They don't mind him shooting that shot at all. Rudy Fernandez is not that great of a 3pt shooter."
-New Orleans Hornets broadcasters right after a Rudy Fernandez missed 3pter. Rudy Fernandez finished the game with three 3pters on six attempts.
