he is

getting a little help from Oden occupying two guys on the boxouts, and LMA getting the carom from the scrum. But I also saw him with a VERY nice and physical boxout on ZBo late in the game – was very nice to see him do that.

How did you guys win that?

seeing him get the caroms is good too

many times, he’s on the weakside, or rotations will have him boxing out a smaller player. That’s when he’s got to hustle around and just grab the ball.

Great game, Oden you rock!

I thought he was done after the first half, but he came in and mad a huge impact on both ends. LMA was huge, Roy was spotting up, it was fun to watch even without the fast break.

Miller to Oden FTW!

by j-blaze on Nov 10, 2009 7:41 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

last year, he would have been done for.

It’s awesome to see him being resilient this year. If he could put a complete game together, he would be a bona fide all star. 14-6 in the second half alone? That’s 28-12 for a full game!

bench production

It’s not exactly a mystery why the offense looked terrible when the starters went to the bench. When you play your first two PGs on the first string, you aren’t going to have anyone to direct when they sit. And lo and behold, not a single bench player had an assist (which I think is usually a pretty good indicator of ball movement).

by atomiccafe on Nov 10, 2009 7:43 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Nate might have something with Roy at the three

Start Miller, Rudy, Roy, LA and Oden. Then bring Bayless, Blake, Martell, Outlaw and Priz off the bench. If Blake can play 2 in the 1st unit why not the second. He would bring stability to Bayless’ point play.

I'm not optimistic but...

this would take some pressure off

by the glide on Nov 10, 2009 8:10 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't disagree with the sentiment

A Bayless and Blake backcourt would be complimentary because Bayless is SG and Blake is a PG

by BlazerTag on Nov 10, 2009 8:12 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

right.

I agree with that, but I think that Nate/Pritchard would still like to see bayless play pg and this way he could practice with Blake as a safety. In reality though Blake is the point guard.

by the glide on Nov 10, 2009 8:14 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

bayless is a shooting point guard

“Bayless is a SG, not a PG” is a simple fallacy. He just happens to be way ahead in his scoring ability, but has essential PG abilities – defend, break defense down off the dribble, run the fast break (he HAS passed when leading the fast break, once. Recently.)

Granted, he pressures too hard on defense, but his heart is in the right place, and he is much more prone to passing than anyone gives him credit for.

I thought....

that the reason why most teams don’t run with 3 guards was kinda explained for nate tonight, not that he didn’t already know.

I think that roy remembered why and how he does what he does well, Lamarcus looked in great form tonight against …well… yeah.

Greg did alright… I dig the offense but I wanna see a 15 rebound game. are our guards supose to gobble em up’ like that?

Martell was… yeah I would like a little more care in what he does I mean good goosh man, it’s 82 games!! be careful.

I’m lovin me some andre.

Joel , Blake, nice.

AND CAN SOMEBODY SET RUDY UP WITH A CLEAN LOOK…..

Expect all you want, but thats a great line for essentially only playing in the second half.

Outlaw's was awesome

Oden’s take and dunk on Z-Bo meant more. And since it was part of a good game overall, I like it more.

and seemed more demoralizing to the whoever that team was trying to defend him tonight

I agree

Outlaw’s was a WHOA, that was awesome… but also since it’s Outlaw, we’ve seen him do awesome dunks before.

I’ve been waiting for Oden to go to the running hook shot, but end it with a powerful dunk. Loved it.

Gasol got extended run without either Prz or Oden in there. In the second half, Gasol did all his minor damage against Prz.

yep

per minute, Oden would be a candidate.

In terms of overall production, though, Amare, Bynum, Kaman, Nene, Marc and possibly a few others have to be ahead of him.

Oden's numbers are nowhere near All-Star caliber at this point (10% of the season done)...

Something like 9 ppg.

About the rebounds

None of our guards had more than 2 boards. The centers and forwards did their job. I didn’t notice any lost boards, so everyone’s amount is good.

Once again

Oden had stretches (or a quarter) where he was the best player on the floor.

For a super raw 21 year old project, it’s not bad.

FOULS, though, FOULS. Man, when those be under control and he either doesn’t do silly stuff like stick his elbow out, or the refs don’t call him for it… will mean a world of diff-er-ence.

Gasol was messing with Joel tonight

Przy is a good defender, but as soon as he came in the game Marc went down low and forced Joel to foul him or give up the easy deuce. Meanwhile, I think I saw more entry passes out of Z-bo tonight than in his entire Blazer career. It’s a good thing LMA brought his “A” game…when he’s manning up like that in the paint it doesn’t matter that Przy had a tough night

Wanting Blake to play less? dude drained 4-6 from deep. By contrast, Webster and Outlaw combined for 1-6 from deep and 2-15 overall.

Against the Grizzlies, that’s fine. But against an NBA team with NBA quality wings, the SG/SF combo of Roy and Steve is not going to work. We won’t be able to defend.

The Grizz were a nice test though

Mayo and Gay are good scorers who we expected to have trouble with, with the 3 guard lineup.

I dunno if we made ’em miss or if they just missed.

yeah that's true

Although neither Mayo nor Gay have the type of game where they are really able to exploit smaller players by getting physical. Gay in particular seems to prefer to use his size and athleticism to finish on the break as opposed to abuse shorter players.

They're both jumper heavy

Often bad jumpers.

Mayo could be very good, but he likes to shoot bad shots too much and so does Gay— but at least Mayo can pass a lil’ bit. Gay does nothing but score, and not very well.

no matter how good your technique is, if you’re facing a dude who’s 20+ lbs heavier, it’s not going to be pretty

I don’t blame Brandon one bit, he shouldn’t “have to” guard bigger SFs. That was Nic’s job, and the plan was for Martell to backup Batum. All that was shot to heck when #88 went under the knife. Roy can “take one for the team” for only so long. Even though the starting lineup won’t be as good with Webster starting (at either end of the floor…) if it’s better for Brandon’s long-term well-being that Martell starts (and defends the opposing SF) then that’s what Nate should do. lose games, or "lose" Brandon?

It’s a tough decision, but that’s why Nate makes the big bucks

I know what Greg Popovich would do, he’ll make sure his star player is “OK” and look ahead to the playoffs and have his team peaking, in April. (Of course, Brandon Roy isn’t as “unemotional” as Tim Duncan. If Brandon’s unhappy, even Jason Quick can read his “body language” from press row.) And naturally McMillian doesn’t have the same “leeway” that Pop has (to “concede” games during the regular season) because Nate hasn’t won NBA titles, like Greg has

Rudy will outshoot Blake more often than not and he is better at creating his own shot.

It’s not that Blake is doing a bad job, it’s that he is playing out of position and there is a better place for him in the 2nd unit and a better person to take his current minutes.

by the glide on Nov 10, 2009 8:20 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Not really

Rudy has a better role off the bench than as a starter. If he was starting alongside Roy and Miller, he wouldn’t handle the ball, much. His job would be to catch and shoot tryes. He’s not fond of doing just that, he’s made that very clear to the Blazers, in the past

Defensively, Rudy is a gambler and not a position defender. He tends to trail a penetrator and try to poke away steals instead of staying in front of his man and rotating correctly. Tonight we saw Blake quickly double Z-bo and force him to pass out, then Steve crossed the court in time to defend his man on the weak side. Maybe Rudy could do that as well, but perhaps he’d get caught up in traffic and be late to close out on the shooter.

Bottom line, it won’t matter soon. Rudy is not going to replace Steve in the starting lineup. If anything, Blake will be joining Fernandez on the white team. Not because the 3-guard hasn’t been effective (they’re 3-0, and counting) but because Roy is getting tired of defending SFs.

the miller/roy/rudy/lma/oden lineup doesn't have to start

but it should get some good minutes, and it will be very effective against smaller SF’s. Against bigger/more forceful SF’s, like Melo, you need Webster in the lineup.

What is sort of sad

is that at one time we were as bad as the Grizzlies… but the Grizzlies have both more talent AND a bleaker future than we did in the Randolph/Miles era, and its just inherent in the franchise. No matter how much talent they draft no one believes they will ever be a good team. But once Roy looked good as a rookie, lots of people thought the Blazers would be good, or at least their future was bright.

Imagine Roy on the Grizzlies. Then his story isn’t about being an All-Star or captain of the most promising team in the league. Its does he show loyalty to the team that drafted him and sign an extension even though they are going to be losers for years and years. What if Derrick Rose had gone to Sacramento? Is the difference between a Hall of Fame career and a couple All-star games for Blake Griffin the fate of the ping pong balls picking the Clippers over the Knicks or Suns? Conley, Gay, and Thabeet are doomed. I can see Gasol enduring and making it on another team, but that’s still a worse survival rate than a train crash.

by matthewcc on Nov 10, 2009 7:53 PM PST reply actions   1 recs

I don't mean the ping pong balls decided good teams

I mean they decided a players career to some degree. Is Rudy Gay on a better franchise an All-Star? What about Danny Granger on the Bulls?

What about Roy if he was a Clipper?

by matthewcc on Nov 10, 2009 8:23 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I've made a similar point in the past

Terry Cummings versus James Worthy. How good would’ve Cummings been, playing alongside Magic and Kareem? Who would even remember Worthy if he had played for the Bucks, Spurs and Clippers?

Location, location, location. Gay will “get out” of Memphis this summer. If he’s lucky, he’ll wind up in a winning situation before his best years are behind him. If he’s smart when he gets there, he’ll learn to shoot less, and win more

I dunno

I’m old enough to have watched Terry Cummings. And I don’t recall him EVER looking as mediocre as Rudy Gay did tonight. Location is vital, but if you don’t have the goods, you’re not going to be a star, regardless of where you are.

Gay's problem

Is he is MUCH more selfish than the normally selfish scorer, and won’t likely suddenly become a smart player.

His assist percentage and usage rate is insane for a player as mediocre as him. No team will be good if he is one of their best players. He’s Travis with more minutes and shots. He is worse than old Z-Bo at being a black hole (new Z-Bo allegedly is passing now).

Besides being a guy who only scores and still only does it in the high-teens, what does he do?

He’s got the body to be really good, but he’s shown nothing that points to him not being a bad player on a bad team who gets a larger role than he deserves which allows him to put up numbers that look okay from afar.

but Rudy's also a guy

who I could see RC Buford signing for pennies on the dollar and coach Pop “getting him” to play team ball. If you’ve got the right system and veterans who will enforce “peer pressure” even the most “selfish” players might fall in line. Especially if they start to get motivated to win a ring, as they get older

(and if you think that winning doesn’t matter to these kids, check out what Rondo said to CP3 recently “I’ve got a ring and you’ll never get one”)

When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!

by two4larue on Nov 11, 2009 9:35 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

But CP3 is a great player

So that would hurt. I think it matters to good players, and both Rondo and CP3 are good players who play a team game— even if one or both might be jerks.

Gay plays the opposite of a team game.

And aside from Stephen Jackson on the Spurs (and he isn’t really unselfish, really, and can play defense) I can’t think of anyone the Spurs brought in, who was a player who played the entirely wrong way before, and changed him around.

Especially a young kid who wants a big contract and stats… Gay has shown no propensity for being anything more than that.

It COULD happen, but I don’t like betting on an established player totally changing their approach and style of play early on in their career. History says the selfish player who gets no assists and takes a lot of bad shots and hurts his team on defense and offense, stays that way.

Anything could happen though. Gay will take whoever pays him the most, I believe.

rotation

We should figure out a way to play LMA with the 2nd unit and make him the focal point in the halfcourt during the early 2nd/4th quarters, posting him on the low block and using Przy out on the high picks. Also, we desperately need a PG when we are running the full 2nd unit – and Bayless is not a PG. Start Webster and play the 3-guard lineup off the bench wiht Blake/Bayless/Rudy

How did you guys win that?

I know it may not be in our repertoire

But it would be awesome to run the high elbow play through LaMarcus when BRoy goes to the bench. LMA could receive the ball at the free throw line extended, Blake (if he’s in with LMA), would drop toward the baseline and give an option for a jumper with Rudy running some screen action with Pryz on the weakside. LMA is a pretty good passer and seems to operate most naturally facing the basket, so this kind of offense might really suit his game for stints.

If Nate was always intent on integrating Andre into the starting lineup, why didn’t we start there and progress toward a smoothly functioning operation geared toward the playoffs?

Instead we wasted the first five games on the “Blake starting” charade, now we have to waste more time integrating Miller. Had we just gone with Miller from the start, we could be using these pre Christmas games to get the lineup playoff ready instead of in regular season operation.

As it is getting B Roy to come around to the idea of being a SF.

Our most effective lineups last year all had Roy at the three. If this is a transitional lineup, it’s as much for Brandon’s sake as it is Blake’s.

I see that above you said “just as much of a Blazer” and I suppose I took that out of context but I took it to mean equal talent. I know we are 3-0 with this lineup but two of those games were against Memphis and Minnesota. This lineup will only take us so far and it just gets in the way of the true 1st and 2nd units learning to play together. I just want to see this team reach its potentiial and I see this lineup as a wasted opportunity to develop as a team.

I agree with most of that

but they are not “close to equal” in ballhandling. Rudy is fairly good taking the ball to the hole if he receives it while slashing. Otherwise, he is a relatively poor ballhandler even for a 2 guard. Blake, as an average handling PG (or even slightly below average) is a much better ballhandler than Rudy.

Reference Steve’s ‘hands’ rating of 28 vs. Rudy’s 18, per 82games.com.

Blazers Win!

I love the Blazers.

But I seriously need to stop staying up all night watching the games.
Why isn’t Germany on the same time zone as all the blazer games? can someone please figure this one out for me? Who is good at math here? Science? Anyone? My sleep deprived, blazer addicted soul needs your help.

Thought Greg looked great. Especially paired with Dre. Liked LA’s intensity on the boards. Good win overall, makes me happy going to bed.

It wasn't pretty, but a win by over 10 points is a win over by 10 points, and on the road.

I can’t wait for Rudy to find his stroke this season. I think it is REEEEALLY going to help us get to that next level. We need his scoring off the bench bad.

Blake

showed tonight why he is so important to this team. By the way neither Rudy or Bayless are capable of playing point guard. Counting the days till Miller is off this team. Make it happen Roy!

Puh-leeeeeze.

Remember why most Blazer Sedgers want a new starting PG over Steve Blake. The man can not fight through a screen, stay in front of PG’s, and is incapable of feeding the post. I love me some Blake, but off the bench. Miller is leagues better than Blake. He helps Greg more than Blake ever will.

He’s more athletic than anyone I’ve seen him play against, he gets to the line, and plays fierce defense.

He does turn the ball over a bit too much, but hey, he’s still a rook (and a 20 year old one at that).

by BlazerTag on Nov 10, 2009 9:03 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Tyreke Evans is playing out of position at point guard, as he's natural position is small ...

forward — which is ’cause of his lenghty wingspan, tough defense against bigger perimeter players, slashing abilities on offense, et cetera — besides, he lacks the handles and court vision that are necessary to run an offense smoothly.

At this rate, though, the Sacramento Kings have a steep uphill battle right now with its rebuilding process. A two-way post player and a pure point guard added to its core of Jason Thompson, Tyreke Evans, and Kevin Martin would go a long way in moving the process along quickly.

He looks like he has "franchise player" written all over him

I know a lot of the guys at SacTownRoyalty were bummed about not drafting Ricky Rubio, but you can’t argue with the results so far.

Drafting a SG when your best player is a SG doesn’t make a lot of sense until you realize how often said SG gets injured.

Tyreke Evans isn't really a 2, either. As it is, Evans lacks enough range on his ...

jump shot — from both mid-range and long-range — to become s reliable option at shooting guard. To me, the Sacramento Kings best bet in the long run is to pair Evans at the 3, Kevin Martin at the 2, and hope to luck into drafting John Wall at the 1 next year.

Would still need a better inside presence that Hawes but its a damn good foundation that point notwithstanding

It's amusing to me that the Sacramento Kings have two similar 3/4s, Andres Nocioni and Omri Casspi, ...

playing extensive minutes alongside each other at the forward positions. If the Kings had a decent defender with size as its backup center, Nocioni and Casspi could head a solid high-energy second unit—especially if backup shooting guard Francisco Garcia wasn’t out with his freak injury.

Andres Nocioni can bang if he wants to with the big boys, but truthfully neither one of them ...

is capable of filling the role of a decent combo forward off the bench for a solid team.

Unfortunately for them, though, they’re stuck on a bad team that lacks a frontline stud at center to pair with productive power forward Jason Thompson.

Jennnings, Flynn, Evans, Lawson, Casspi, Blair, Budinger are all keepers. Those 4 PGs are all legit starters-- a couple could be allstars eventually.

Griffin and Rubio are potential allstars also.

A fantastic group of PGs. Not a stellar group of wings or bigs.

Westbrook is disguising himself as a PG and Green masquerading as PF. No interior D and lack of low post scoring.

Durant isn’t really a highlight type of guy, he’s a Kevin Martin shooter, but Westbrook is fun to watch.

The rest of the team is pretty shoddy so they aren’t fun. And not a lot of young guys to watch develop that really intrigue me, aside from Westbrook…
