Sun. night junk Nov. 1

Beauty weather today if you like the 70 in the sun yet cool in the shade kind of thing.

Star-divide

The forcast is for a week of the same,if you live above the fog[smiles] life is sweet.I want to talk about staying in shape and why are some guys so durable ,I threw with the frisbee crew today and it feels pretty cool to still have some game. Well I really dont have any more filler so in a departure from normal JD protocal will say something about Basket Ball. Rudy is showing real signs of becoming a competent defender,Travis is rebounding and Martell is just going to get better so things could be worse. So the topic is what is with guys like Steve Largent or Steve Nash or Dre being injury proof in violent contact sports when most players get hurt all the time?

I flagged one his earlier posts.

Someone commented on it saying he was writing too many posts and he basically laughed in their face. The guy is not going to listen to anybody obviously.

in the flag comment section i mentioned his attitude, how he wasn’t going to stop or something like that.

Romance me with that Roy rainbow shot which took flight from way beyond the arc and sailed so high that before it came back down to earth sealing the victory, it kissed the rafters and said "You're mine baby."

not yet, still waiting for the clearinghouse to approve him, which could take awhile. \

he is supposed to be the best of OSU’s new recruits.

and yeah he should, it’s the same thing that happened with Wheaton from the football team. the clearinghouse has just taken forever to get him approved.

the TV call was nowhere near as good as the radio call on that play

by Starvin' Marvin on Nov 1, 2009 10:37 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

haha yeah

Wheaton has actually contributed for us — he basically spells James Rodgers whenever he gets tired.

It just sometimes takes the clearinghouse awhile to approve some people sometimes, whether it be inaccuracies on their transcripts or w/e.

once he gets approved, this should be a much more dynamic and entertaining team to watch. Cunningham (the other good recruit), Seth Tarver, and Nelson all have crazy athleticism.

I’m really excited about OSU Basketball this year.

by cloudydays on Nov 1, 2009 10:35 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

well idk. I went to the first exhibition game today. my pictures are below. And TP looks like he still hasn’t found his stroke from frosh year. Catron looks the same. And they can not feed Dunigan in the post. They need a lesson on post entries from Juwan Howard.

But the newcomers and some of the other younger guys look great. Kent had them pressing the whole game today and it caused a lot of turnovers (albeit against Concordia). One of the many things we were missing last year was consistent outside shooting and the ability to penetrate. Today everyone shot from 3 really well and way more penetration than last year.

Look out for Jamil Wilson and Malcolm Armstead. Jamil is a super-athletic frosh from Wisconsin. Long arms, great D, can get WAY up and shoots the three well. Malcolm is a JC transfer and is the first pg that can consistently penetrate AND has a reliable jumper since Brooks.

Barring a miracle, we’re still a middle of the pack (see what i did there) team. Im guessing we’ll split the season series with you and maybe score a couple of upsets at home against good teams. Our ceiling is probably the NIT.

You got a prediction/breakdown for your beavs?

lessssss go

by dougall5505 on Nov 1, 2009 10:42 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

well we certainly have more depth than last year

last year we were basically 8 guys deep, anything more than that (if someone got in foul trouble) and we were very very weak.

this year, we only lost one guy (claitt) and added 4 freshman, all of which were pretty highly regarded.

cunningham has out-of-this-world athleticism for a point guard, he should get a bunch of minutes.

burton is like the “new” big baby, he is huuuge. he is surprisingly quick and has nice touch, and he should be a much needed inside presence for OSU.

brandt looks surprisingly good, and he should contend for a bunch of minutes as well.

finally, nelson was the “best” of the OSU recruits this year. but we have yet to see what he adds to the team.

once nelson gets approved I would expect to a bunch more pressure utilizing the athleticism and length of Tarver, Nelson, Cunningham, Haynes and Johnson, also the fact that Robinson has much more depth, he can have the team push the ball up and down the court more.

last year’s brand of basketball was ugly and slow, but it was extremely effective. I expect to see a team this year that uses that same basic style, but at a much quicker and more exciting pace. They will always be able to fall back on the style they used last year when they run into some of the more athletic teams.

This looks like a team that could potentially make a run in the Pac-10 and make it back to the NCAAs, which would be remarkable considering where we were just 2 years ago.

When I got here it was like quadruple that. Its actually $35 but if you go to like half the games you get a $20 rebate. That’s how bad they will be.

yeah. Cal and UW will be pretty good. I think UCLA will be solid as Howland will have them playing good D.

Beyond that, there’s no guarantee even a 4th team makes the tourney, though I think someone will. Maybe 5 teams get in but I kind of doubt it.

by portlandgiirl91 on Nov 1, 2009 10:31 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

it could get to that point

Rudy, Joel and Andre are certainly good enough to start for a lot of teams. So is Outlaw. So far they’ve struggled though.

by jksnake99 on Nov 1, 2009 10:32 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

you know though, the last couple years this team has been pretty resilient when one of the starters goes down

I’m not saying it’s a good thing, but it makes us simplify our rotations, and typically our bench players have stepped up, in the starters stead. I would even say that it hasn’t taken a lot to reintegrate the starters back in the regular rotation after they get back. It’s just how well the player himself is healed.

Man, I just contemplated a doomsday scenario for the Portland Trail Blazers if the Bulls decide to slash ...

salary mid-season in an attempt to lure Dwyane Wade or Chris Bosh to Chicago come the summer of 2010.

FROM CHICAGO & TO LOS ANGELES
PG Kirk Hinrich ($9,500,000)

FROM LOS ANGELES & TO CHICAGO
SF Adam Morrison ($5,257,229)
PG Jordan Farmar ($1,947,240)
PF Josh Powell ($959,111)
Cash Considerations ($3,000,000)

Prior to signing off on the deal, the Los Angeles Lakers would have to sign a couple of D-Leauge scrubs — such as Chris Richard Derrick Byars, who were both ironically cut from Chicago Bulls training camp — to fill out its roster.

The main point, however, is to think in horror of how utterly dominant the Lakers could become with Hinrich’s services over the next few years. As Derek Fisher ages and Farmar’s proven himself to not be the long-term answer at off guard in Los Angeles, an addition of Hinrich at the 1 spot could set that squad up for a dynasty run.

That’s scary thought, eh.

Nate McMillan runs a system that would improperly utilize Gerald Wallace and Caron Butler isn't ...

available due to the Washington Wizards being in full-on compete mode this season.

Regarding “Crash,” though, he’d need an offensive system that can effectively implement his skills at baseline driving and serviceable mid-range game.

Offensively, Wallace is like a modern-day Dominique Wilkins — albeit without the high usage — and it does make me wonder if there’s any coach out there with a history of playing a Wilkins esque player.

http://www.basketball-reference.com/play-index/pcm_finder.cgi?request=1&sum=0&p1=wallage01&y1=2009&p2=wilkido01&y2=1986

Ah, that reminds me of certain someone.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The problem, however, is Brandon Roy would probably moan and groan about McMillan’s dismissal, while being unwilling to share the ball a lot with a slashing 3 like Wallace.

Regardless, McMillan isn’t getting fired and Wallace isn’t walking through that door — which is unless Portland would be willing to part with a package of Steve Blake, Travis Outlaw, and Rudy Fernandez — so let’s just forget about it.

on a per possession basis, we were the 13th most effective defense— not terrible, but not gonna cut it for a deep playoff run.

-Rudy with a midrange game and improved handles
-Oden progressing
-Brandon Roy is awesome.

I am so annoyed that there's no way to not see the score of the game on LP broadband

When do games go into the archives? It’s past midnight, past 3am east coast, the game should be in archive (where I got scores turned off) OR give me the gosh damn ability to turn off scores on today’s games. So annoying.

Ok, I know we won, huzzah, sounds like we were still rough, I’m gonna go watch now.

Anything to look out for?

Is LMA okay?

by Mortimer on Nov 2, 2009 12:29 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

look for Gregory Wayne

he was very active defensively, especially when it came to communicating with his teammates, as Quick pointed out in his article.

LMA should be fine, just one of those annoying knee bruise things.

LMA x-rays were negative

status unknown for Tuesday.

Watch out for KD and Roy volunteering for Habitat for Humanity will all their bricks, for Oden playing well but being ignored when his man helps on a penetrating guard even if wide open for a lob, for a turnover-fest of epic porportions in the 2nd quarter, for some bad reffing, and for our bench playing like crud.

That's the life of a jump shooter

And why he’ll be a less effective Carmelo to me.

When Carmelo isn’t hitting, he has the inside game to fall back on AND he usually goes to it first. Durant may develop an inside game (I remember him having one at Texas, and that was a big reason I liked him so much), but he doesn’t have one yet and he definitely doesn’t have the bulk for one at the NBA level.

Durant is an amazing shooter, but every shooter misses some nights— and when you’re a shooter only for the most part, you just hurt your team on those nights. He shot 14 FTs though, so it looks like he was trying to make up for his misses. That’s smart.

Funny how Quick’s recap says how nice Oden was, but the ESPN recap says Oden didn’t have an impact on the game. Hmm.

by Mortimer on Nov 2, 2009 12:42 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

well maybe a less effective version of this year's Carmelo

but KD last year was more efficient as a scorer than Carmelo has ever been for a full season. ’Melo seems to be on a mission this year though.

Also, Sefalosha was allowed to get away with a lot more on Roy than we were allowed to on KD. At least that’s how it seemed until the 4th when we got a few more calls.

by jksnake99 on Nov 2, 2009 12:54 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I guess I mean, come playoff time

Melo’s inside/outside style is better than KD’s outside/inside style.

Melo wasn’t a good 3 point shooter coming into the league at all, and didn’t have much range outside 15 feet, though he could shoot within his range. Durant is an extremely natural, good shooter— better than Melo for sure.

Those 3’s make him more efficient, but in a physical playoff game, I’ll take Melo’s less-efficient-overall-but-more-effective-and-consistent scoring attack.

Because when the jumper ain’t fallin’, he’s going to post up and score inside.

But I can see Durant being statistically more efficient, but like with Kevin Martin’s efficiency, I don’t think it makes them more effective than someone who can score every night inside. Ya know what I mean?

by Mortimer on Nov 2, 2009 1:06 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

How were Oden's fouls?

Too bad LMA got hurt— 5 boards in 12 minutes might be a record for him.

Nate let him play the whole 1st quarter in our first game against Houston, when he didn’t have foul troubles…

Ok, I go get comfy and then watch the game. I hate knowing the outcome but at least we won.

I love how Oden really wanted to win this. He knows that people watch their “matchup”.

by jksnake99 on Nov 2, 2009 12:55 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I do believe some writers and commentators have a biase against Oden

Particularly when he and Durant face off. Last year when Durant outplayed Oden when they blew us out, it was Durant outplaying Oden. When Oden handily outplayed Durant in one of our blowouts of them last year, it was only mentioned by the Blazer outlets.

I ain’t normally thinking like this, in regards to the media and specific players, but some are bought into the “Oden isn’t good” story and don’t wanna change it.

Well Frye was really bad in limited minutes

Really awful most nights.

He’s just a dude who needs minutes to be good, minutes we didn’t have. Trout can play SF, Frye can’t, so Trout is able to get minutes outside of just being LMA’s backup. Frye could only get the 12 minutes LMA ain’t on the court, and he usually stunk it up— didn’t hit open shots, messed up on defense, dumb turnovers, etc.

I’m very glad he’s doing well, most of us knew Frye had talent. It just didn’t fit us.

didn’t you have some fancy pants idea to load the game later without seeing the score?

by fanfaraway on Nov 2, 2009 2:13 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

NBA LPBB foiled my plan for me

You see, you can turn off the scores for the archived games, but there is a scoreboard at the bottom of the screen even on the archive page and of course I saw the score of the Portland/Houston game last night.

So, tonight, I blocked off that part of the screen and after midnight went into the archive section, but our game wasn’t there yet. I waited and waited, reloaded and reloaded, and it still wasn’t there. So I went to the “today’s games” section, and blocked off the screen with a foam BLAZERS #1 finger to avoid seeing the score.

UNFORTUNATELY, there is no way to NOT see the score and clock the “watch game” button, so I had to see we won already. It’s very lame. They foiled my foolproof plans to not see the score 2 nights in a row by being weiner heads.

AND NOW the stupid game won’t even load!!!

I watched the second half yesterday on a link they posted in the game thread

and it was really good quality, I think it was called freedomtv or something like that. I couldn’t watch the first half though, cause justin.tv kept kicking me out of the room.

So lakers-grizzlies is this friday? I hope they change it, since Gasol senior is injured… Or is he playing on friday? They usually don’t have much room to manouver, and they stick with their schedule, but here’s hoping!

Slow start, the team needs to learn how to play together. Roy needs to learn how to play with Miller

Roy need to get Greg some touches. Some of last year’s problems have also been a lag this season. Greg needs to have a breakout season. The second unit is one of the best in the league. Nate is tentatively trying on the different possible line-ups, lets give him some time, blah blah blah.

How did I do? I hope this is enough for a couple of days of bball credentials.

You are covered in the basketball knowledge and comments department, of course, whereas I come here to read and learn more than to comment, but that doesn’t mean I want to be a lurker. I started commenting because I knew everyone’s screen name off by heart and (obviously) no one knew me, and it was a strange sensation, which I wanted to avoid.

I love me some Martell Webster,

Some good things starting to happen down low. Don’t know why Oden was overlooked on 3 or 4 easy over-the-head lobs tonight, I could have made that pass. He was fronted about 6 feet away form the basket and the lob could have been near the rim on some of those.
Lots of energy from Martell and Rudy so far in the season.
I wasn’t expecting a step up in Rudy’s game, nice surprise there. I’m starting to believe he might do well at the point, great passer, great vision, nice fade away jumper, and starting to drive down the lane.

the JD is the only place in this website that it’s mostly off-topic stuff, not “Blazers-centered 100%” to put it in some kind of way. I don’t really see how this could be disturbing. Maybe there are some threads that I missed, strip clubs in Portland style (which I thought was very educational for us foreigners).

Some comments refer to the game day threads, maybe there’s something there, I checked in last saturday but everything seemed ok, your usual woooot wooooot and rudy for threeeeeeeeee…

I think so too, it was just the first reaction "oh oh"

Well, quite a lot was deleted after the game against Houston in the final/post game reaction thread. We had someone going after Ann full expletives after she defended Travis who was definitely banned (not a regular). And of course some heated divergent views of what Nate should do and how long he should coach the team :)

But slowly things happen that they cannot help and the Blazers Fellowship of the Ring begins to break apart

really?

weird. Well, that explains it then.

Not really

The JD is the place where that type of conversation is supposed to go. I think it’s directed more at stuff in the fanposts/gamethreads

Breaking: Rondo agrees to 5 years $55 million extension

Wow, they got him on the cheap with all their talk about character issues. Maybe KP should have said something about LaMarcus tattoos and lack of coachability :)

anyone having problems loading BEdge?

Most of the time my browser (Firefox) gets stuck loading an ad from www35.glam.com, have to try a couple of times till it works.

I’ve had a few minor issues.

Weird front page sometimes, no sidebar at times, no comment section. So far every time it’s fine if explorer is closed and reopened. What I’m getting the most is invisible mouse, but only at BEdge.

Romance me with that Roy rainbow shot which took flight from way beyond the arc and sailed so high that before it came back down to earth sealing the victory, it kissed the rafters and said "You're mine baby."
