Yup, also

The Blazers won the NBA championship in 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015. Blazers lost to the newly reformed Seattle SuperSonics in 2013, who were able to clone the entire 1996 Chicago Bulls teams in their primes, sadly though they only had a lifespan of 1 year. Greg Oden become a monster for the rest of his career, but admitted to steroid use at the end of his career. Regardless he still made it into the hall of fame, ironically Pete Rose is still denied the baseball hall of fame. Brett Favre come out of retirement and lead the Packers to 3 straight superbowl victories before retiring for good.

Durant sucks.

The TV announcers for OKC do not seem smart (either that, or they aren’t very good at saying what they mean), but they don’t talk as much as others so that is nice.

I seriously doubt the coaching staff was actively telling him to shoot long 2's

If anything, they just weren’t emphasizing his need to step back and make 3’s. I’m sure with Phoenix’s style of play, they’ve done there best to tell him to shoot the long ball.

"Ain't nothin' in this world for free."

by Arby on Nov 1, 2009 6:52 PM PST up reply actions

by bow4meow on Nov 1, 2009 6:59 PM PST up reply actions

Either way really

If you hit 1 of 20 three pointers, it’s still more efficient than 1 of 30 2-pointers with a toe or foot on the line.

Hey, just saying :)

I sure don’t miss two point shots with a toe on the line….

by Timmay! on Nov 1, 2009 7:33 PM PST up reply actions

Oh, gotcha

Just saying that even when the shots aren’t going in, the three pointer is still more efficient when you eventually hit one, vs the long two pointer.

It’s just never a good idea to take a shot with a foot on the line. Frye seems to have fixed that now.

by Timmay! on Nov 1, 2009 7:46 PM PST up reply actions

i guess

33% from 3 is the same as 50% from 2 range… but there are alot of players whose range doesn’t quite eek beyond the arc. So an inch or two can make a real difference, especially if a guy has to consciously check whether or not he’s behind the line as opposed to shooting the shot without double checking

World's phoniest apology-- "I'm sorry."

Al Jefferson & Ryan Hollins

Not to totally discount his performance, but he’s not exactly going up against Dwight Howard.

"Ain't nothin' in this world for free."

by Arby on Nov 1, 2009 6:54 PM PST up reply actions

Ryan Hollins has the length and athleticism to give Andrea Bargnani trouble, but Al Jefferson is ...

definitely a glorified Zach Randolph. For the Minnesota T’wolves, getting a good return on Jefferson should be one of David Kahn’s top priorities. Trading the draft rights of Ricky Rubio to the New York Knicks next summer for unprotected first-round draft picks in 2012, 2014, and 2016 should be another order of business.

seriously,

I’ve noticed that the game seems to be called differently for perimeter players and for bigs. He can get mauled fighting for rebounds and position and never get a call, but guards/forwards can drive from the perimeter, initiate a light touch and draw a foul. No consistency between the perimeter and the post officiating.

I also hate the Wade play where a player lowers his head and shoulder and bowls into a post player to get a foul call

problem is,

roy tries to do the same thing, (albeit to limited effect). I don’t mind the game being called uniformly (definitely will make us more formidable defensively as our centers won’t foul out constantly if refs swallow their whistles instead of calling a foul whenever an opposing guard flails to the ground after losing the ball out of bounds)

I think there is a difference between Wade and Roy's game though.

It seems Roy makes an attempt to get to the rim. While he might yell to draw attention he rarely throws himself into the opposing players. He seems like he’s actually attempting a shot, rather than simply trying to draw free throws.

I haven't seen Wade at all this year, and only saw him last year during

the home blowout. So I won’t comment on his game here as I am not well informed, other than knowing he is tops in the league at getting to the line. I agree with you though that Roy’s game is different, that’s why I put that disclaimer that he does it to a “limited effect”. I love Roy’s game because he is so under control, except for when he is about to shake and bake or cross over, and then you’re just like “I can’t believe he did that”.

To be fair there is a safety arguement to be made in the implimentation of the restricted area.

If, as fans, we want to see highlight dunks we have to protect the players from being undercut while they are in the air, at full speed, around the rim

But as a basketball player being undercut is one of the worst feelings in the world. Some discretion should be given to referees as to whether the offensive player is out of control or not, while still protecting the offensive player. How, I have no idea…

I see just as much if not more players being undercut knowing all they have to do is the lambo leap into the bigs knowing they get the call. The rule was designed to make the game more interesting to the lame-o couch-bot who needs to see nba jam type dunks to remain entertained… BOOM SHAKALAKA!!

by bow4meow on Nov 1, 2009 7:22 PM PST up reply actions

I would agree that

players throw themselves into bigs to get calls. However, there is a difference between that play and a player jumping into the air and having an opposing player slide underneath him, establishing position under the rim. i think players need a safe landing zone

by Occam's Blazer on Nov 1, 2009 7:27 PM PST up reply actions

its a contact sport that involves risk of injury

and I hear what you are saying. But under the rim shouldn’t extend out as far as the restricted zone does. Under the rim is under the rim. Not under the rim, let them play D

World's phoniest apology-- "I'm sorry."

by bow4meow on Nov 1, 2009 7:33 PM PST up reply actions

My arguement to that is that since players in the NBA are jumping from so far away,

they need the extra space to land. However, your point is well taken that players should have to weigh the risk of being injured with the reward that would come from throwing themselves at the basket in order to get a shot from closer in

Aut disce, aut discede; manet sors tertia, caedi

by Occam's Blazer on Nov 1, 2009 7:40 PM PST up reply actions

the latter would really benefit us right now...lol

But it’s left in place to limit the over-effectiveness of playing zone in the paint, versus driving scorers (which make the games more exciting and TV-friendly)

by Norsktroll on Nov 1, 2009 7:44 PM PST reply actions

Channing Frye's numbers are an aberration to start the season, so he'll come back down to earth.

Regarding Nate McMillan, there’s several reasons to criticize him — such as his inability to coach the pick-and-roll on other side of the ball, his lack of tactical skills on offense, avoidence of establishing a proficient low-post game with his prodigious pivotman, rigid nature, et cetera — yet, you can’t entirely blame him for Frye’s ineffectiveness last season. Besides, Frye’s huge games have come against the Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves — which are two teams that make me gag — so that’s not an impressive feat in my book.

yeah, I think the Blazers should have emphasized "no long twos with your foot on the line" to Frye

but to be fair, he wasn’t making any of his shots last year and was frankly all around terrible. Frye has traditionally shot well every other year, so he was due to be “on” this year. He’ll continue to be a poor rebounder and defender, but at least he’ll be somewhat of a weapon on offense now that he’s shooting 3s. It will be interesting to see what % he ends up with.

by jksnake99 on Nov 1, 2009 9:04 PM PST up reply actions

... and 5 rebounds in 36 minutes.

Phoenix’s system may be the most shooter friendly in the league, especially with Nash. Even Tim Thomas played decently on offense for them. Frye will likely put up better numbers (though probably not at the current level), but that only means is that he is a somewhat better fit there than maybe on any other team.
