Blazers TV Coverage

I was pretty surprised on Tuesday to see that the Blazers had decided that none of their preseason games were "viable" enough to televise, especially considering the enormous amount of interest the team has generated both here in Oregon and in places abroad.  The signing of Miller, the development of our young talent (especially Oden), and our already tight team chemistry have contributed to making this the most highly anticipated season in recent memory. From the highlights I was able to get of our first two preseason games, we missed some pretty good stuff.  We missed Oden destroying the opponent's center, we missed Andre's seamless integration into our offense, and we missed out on Bayless going above the rim.  Suffice to say that the Blazers organization needs a pretty big ice pack to help with the swelling from the verbal shiner that they took for making such an incredibly shortsighted and asinine decision.

Star-divide

Fortunately, I really cannot get any more angry and frustrated about how infrequently Blazer games are televised than I already am.  We are going on our 3rd season of terrible coverage.  The only professional sport Oregon has to boast about broadcasts little more than 30 Blazer games in a given season. For everyone who is not in the know, if you do not live in one of the extremely few locales that carry the channel, than you cannot get most of the Blazer games on TV. The NBA League Pass will not work because they are blacked-out. Also, you cannot order the channel on either of the Dish providers because they do not carry it. Essentially, without a great amount of effort, you are stuck watching the games on your computer.

To drive my point home and to also release a little steam at how ludicrous their coverage is, I thought it would be a great idea to post a map of Oregon showing all of the places where Comcast Sportsnet Northwest is available. I got this information straight from the donkey's, I mean Comcast's, mouth. http://northwest.comcastsportsnet.com/channel_locations.aspx

This map is broken down by zip code. If the city that you live in was part of the Comcast affiliates, I colored that zip code red. If not, I colored your zip code black.  It looks like Comcast got a teeny tiny bottle of fingernail polish, dipped a coffee stirring straw into it, and then gently blew the polish against an enormous black canvas.  The few areas hit were those deemed lucky enough to get the games.  It's sickeningly sad when you look at the paltry coverage our state gets of its sole team.  I could seriously rant for another four or five pages, but I don't want to overdo it.  Please Comcast, let us watch our Blazers!!!!!

A blast from the past:

I’m not a fan of the Heliotrope and Gamboge, as I pointed out long ago. Ironically, that post was an attempt to set a new comment record for a gameday post, which previously had been 1237. This was in February 2008! Just a few months later, we break that easily on a non-televised, non-Laker, pre-season game.

Blazers’ Edge is awesome.

Great Work!

Word is the Blazers may start streaming games online for a fee (hopefully it is a reasonable fee). With that, you can either continue to watch on your computer (probably will be better quality than a bootlegged stream), or a semi-computer savvy person with a modern computer and TV could hook their computer up to their TV.

Hopefully the continued fan pressure/demand will lead to a better product.

Verizon and CSN:NW

Verizon really needs to contract the HD version of CSN as well, Comcast has been hording the HD stream for years. Seems like a local channel should pick up all of the games, think about how high the ratings would be!

Yep, 90% of the population lives in 10% of the state,

i.e., Willamette Valley. It’s why I’ve avoided living there ever since I had the option to do so. Of course I’m paying the price now for not having Comcast available. Still, the pluses far out weigh that current minus (even as much as I’ve always loved the Blazers).

And I love hearing that we living the good remote life will have the option to pick up legal streaming (and better quality) of Blazers broadcasts this year. HooooooRaaaaaY for that!!! Still I contend that Comcast sucks!!

Speaking of low density

There is a 1-10 color. But the option below that is not zero, it is “less than 1”. Are they suggesting that part of a person is there? Was it someone who worked for comcast and was captured by blazer fans and now there are small pieces of him or her in each section? That would fit the math…

by lurtsman on Oct 10, 2009 7:27 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The map

I agree that, with the exception of the Rogue Valley and Roseburg, most of the orange to red areas are covered. However, the entire state would be red if the channel was on dish. Even more unacceptable is that people in the red have to subscribe to the “right” ones just to get it. So, the map is misleading because it makes it seem like everyone in the red has the channel when that is most definitely not the case.

I cannot express how mad I am about the tv coverage for blazer games.
I have done what I can as a comsumer to tell Comcast to go suck it. I have DirecTv and non comcast internet.

What is more infuriating is if you look at the DirecTv sports channel lineup, there are about a dozen regional comcast channels..Comcast Detroit, Comcast New England, stc. WTH is Comcast NW the odd network out.

by brioe162 on Oct 9, 2009 12:57 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I think the Comcast situation is a MUCH bigger issue than the pre-season games...

(I hope I am not lynched for this)… With an 82 game regular season and what’s bound to be double digit play off games this year, in this “homers” opinion, I don’t see the lack off TV coverage of the pre-season games as that big a deal… I know, I know unpopular position but I don’t.

I do see the Comcast vs. Satellite providers stand off as a huge problem for Blazer fans. It is hard for me to know if Comcast or the DirecTV types are to blame for this but my instincts tell me it’s a combination of both. As a recent (as in switching over Monday) DirecTV to Comcast convert I expressed my displeasure to DirecTV multiple times. I, like many others, made it clear that I would pay the money to have CSNW so I could watch the Blazers but no matter how much hoping, begging or waiting I did I got nothing. Actually the final straw for me came recently when Versus was taken away and I lost the chance to watch the State’s College Football teams regularly. At the same time DirecTV took ESPN Classic away and decided to charge me if I wanted it and a few other useless Sports Channels.

I don’t really even know who to blame for this problem but I feel like all 3, Comcast, DirecTV and the Blazer orginization, are culpable in this matter. It seems unfathomable to me that in this day and age, in a State with only one professional franchise, that this debate continues. Unfortunately I think there is much more impacting this battle than the good of us Blazer fans.

by Ilikeemall on Oct 9, 2009 3:05 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Losing Versus would be a killer for me....

thank goodness I have Dish so I still get it. I am one of the crazy people who gets up early for 3 weeks in the summer so I can watch the Tour d’ France live on Versus. Viva le Tour!

All that pales in comparison to not getting Comcast Sports Northwest, but that one is out of my hands….

I think your map is overstated here in Southern Oregon . . .

as the 97520 zip code is for the Ashland mailing area. The only
people who get COINCAST Sports NW, live in the People’s Republic
of Ashland, not rural areas just out of the Republic’s limits. It’s much
smaller than the red in the map.
In response to likeemall’s comments, it’s COINCAST vs. Sattelite
company’s and other cable providers. Our ONLY cable company here
in Medford is Charter Communications (Yes, Paul Allen’s own) and they
won’t sign a deal with COINSY ! I would gladly sign up with Charter or Dish,
but DirecTV is off limits, as they stole $ 50.00 from me two years ago in the
original fiasco.
Dear Larry Miller, before you take the Blazer BRAND to the World, How about

They are not monopolizing or attempting to monopolize… They have proprietary programming and haven’t been able to come to terms with various other providers on what that programming is worth.

I wonder

Per NBA rules, the Blazers’ “blackout range” extends to the entire state of Oregon. Given the fact that there is absolutely no way for people to view the Blazers in a non-CSNW area, wouldn’t be in the NBA best interest (read bottom line) to allow for people living outside of CSNW to purchase the league pass and be able to watch all of the games? Additional revenue is additional revenue.

Feeling your pain

I do believe the coverage is not the Blazers’ fault – even though they signed the contract. Comcast is too big to get into a lawsuit with. And Comcast is helping to provide coverage of the Blazers to our Sonic friends. The history of the satellite business used to be competition to get more coverage but not in this case. The map shows that the additional subscribers for DISH and DirecTV are not significant enough to pay the cost of the channel for all their subscribers (what Comcast was demanding of the cable companies). I suspect the Bend Broadband was mostly swayed by the Oregon Duck fans here who were incensed to not see the football games. But they were able to restrict the coverage to the highest premium level (through tough negotiation) and it cost a ton of money all year to see the Blazer games. At least now we have the option and I am thankful.

I despise Comcast

Terrible service, terrible pricing. DirecTV isn’t blameless in this mess either, but Comcast’s position in these negotiations has been unreasonable from the start. Comcast won’t even consider agreeing to terms with DirecTV that put CSN NW/the Blazers (and now Versus) on a sports tier with the other RSNs (including CSN Bay Area, CSN California, etc., which I get on my sports tier with DirecTV), they are insisting DirecTV include CSN NW and Versus on the main tier. Essentially, Comcast won’t agree to any deal that isn’t the most expensive (in terms of rate increase) for the lrgest possible number of DirecTV customers. Am I surprised that two large corporations are putting their bottom lines above their customers – of course not. But it is frustrating that the Blazers front office wouldn’t see this coming from a mile away like most others did and negotiate the original deal with Comcast accordingly, particularly when you consider Comcast’s geographic limitations (I live in Northeast Portland, so my choice for DirecTV is on me, but for people like my parents on the coast, they can’t choose Comcast even if they wanted to). Of course, that wouldn’t fit with Larry Miller’s nonsensical chortling about “building our global brand” and changing the subject whenever this issue is brought up. Maybe Sarah Mensah can enlighten me on how this “optimizes value for our fans”, like jacking up prices for certain games. On the plus side, I still have Sunday Ticket (like I said, DirecTV is not blameless, but after dealing with Comcast during college, I am never sending them another check – irrational, yes, but I truly can’t stand that company) and a new sig.

I hate Comcast.
