Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Was at the game last night

[Tried this as a fan-shot, and lost all my paragraph markers. Posting as a fanpost -- hope its not too unqualified] Sharing a few random thoughts from attending the 2nd preseason game in Sacramento.

At the moment, the Kings are more like a D League team, whole new coaching staff, plenty of new players, they've got a long, long way to go. Still they're playing with hustle and energy, so it was certainly fun to be there. They were no match for the Blazers. We rested Joel, Rudy, Nic, and Travis (two of last years starters and two of last years leading bench scorers) and still absolutely toyed with them. For some stretches, I think Nate was just buying time with 2nd quarter line-ups of something like Bayless, Miller, Cunningham, Collins and Howard. Merely treading water and burning up some clock. Sure that Kings will get better, much, much better; but right now this was almost summer league.

Greg was a beast. He had 8 points in the first 8 minutes. [Kings scoreboard does not show individ ual rebounds, so didn't know how many he had corralled by then]. Early in the game there was a short oh-oh, where on three consecutive plays, he was called for travelling, defensive foul and then offensive foul; but Nate let him play and he was just great. Talk of conditioning and agility, this was second of back-to-back and he was running up and down the floor right till the end of the game with no signs of fatigue or slow-down. He looks good.

LMA was disappointing. He was playing against the same undersized Kings as Greg was. Why couldn't LMA beast as well? LMAs outside shots are always smooth, and he is a player. But, his rebounding was off as usual. And there were many, many times when he had the ball around 6 feet from the rim, and couldn't make something of it -- invariably passing out. It seems like you've got to get him angry before he plays with authority. If LMA wants to make some noise for AllStar consideration, he will need to bring that fire every day. Wonder if any part of this message enters into the contract discussions...

Niftiest pass that I saw was to Andre from Juwan. Almost Sabas like big man passing. And he tossed up couple of good lob entry passes to Greg, where both bigs start around the key, and Greg gets to the rim. GO was fouled at the rim on both occasions.

sure thing.

And slightly off topic, while I have your attention. Did I do something wrong for paragraphs to not get separated in fan-shots? I went back to edit and the paragraph separation still existed in the source material …

This was worth a fanpost though, so you did the right thing bringing it up here, son.

by jscot on Oct 8, 2009 10:15 AM PDT reply actions

Yes indeed.

He offered even more that the stats dont show. Very smart on both defense and offense. He seems to materialize into spots and disrupts opponent ball movement. Some of the rotations (and defensive stops) last night were simply beautiful to watch, the team showed sharpness. On offense his shooting was smooth and even the 12 footer (or thereabouts) went down smoothly.

Not enough at this game to tell how well he would do when he is seriously challenged on 1-on-1 defense, against the likes of Duncan, Odom/Gasol. But veteran savvy was very apparent.

Would you say Howard can be effective at center?

It appeared by the lineups that he played Center some last night?

As an emergency, in case of injury. Yes.

He was used as center, handled himself well, and seemed in good shape. For sure, Howard would struggle against the likes of Shaq. Dont think he could keep up with Nene or Dwight Howard either. But expect he would do fine against Perkins.

No idea why Outlaw was rested

But this was only the Kings, and it really felt like a summer league game. The Blazers didn’t even have to try hard. Brandon was in to get his rhythm back.

There were times last year when match-ups dictated Channing was the option. Juwan could probably take those minutes and be more effective than Channing was. But, Travis still played the bulk of the year.

by FromAfar on Oct 8, 2009 10:33 AM PDT up reply actions

I love that Howard looks for Greg

Kinda makes him a better complement to Greg than other back-up 4s.. Of course, Greg will probably be starting, but it’s nice to know that Greg and Howard could make a solid front line.

by PoliSam on Oct 8, 2009 10:23 AM PDT reply actions

If LMA doesn't sign a deal...

he will be the opposite.

Lamarcus may not throw a pass to Greg all season. LMA could be very nervous about Greg making him look expendable or cutting into his production when they are both in contract years. May make for an interesting dynamic.

Hopefully they will just play ball and let the money take care of itself… but it’s easier said than done letting 50-0 million bucks take care of itself.

Luckily, of course, the PF and the C don’t really depend on each other to get looks in the post. So probably not that big of a deal. But the type of thing you get from Howard, we surely ain’t getting from an unsigned LMA.

Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.

by KP Corleone on Oct 8, 2009 10:51 AM PDT up reply actions

Very true.

You’re right. Lets hope deal done before the season starts. Because there may be very real chance that featuring Greg in the post takes away from LMA’s stats. Last year, LMA was our primary post option; and especially in the first quarter.

Greg has been getting down fast and establishing real low. You’ve got to get him the ball when he’s earned deep post position…

by FromAfar on Oct 8, 2009 10:56 AM PDT up reply actions

If greg goes beastly

LMA is more important. Without LMA we are not a constant favorite to win. If greg sucked, LMA would be somewhat expendable, because we would not have a real championship shot regardless. (Unless he went Mailman, but assuming reasonable non-mvp production, his value goes up as probability of rings goes up.

by lurtsman on Oct 8, 2009 4:37 PM PDT up reply actions

I disagree

LMA won’t let his contract status affect how he plays. If anything, being unsigned might spur him to hit the boards a bit more so as to rack up more double doubles. He’s certainly not going to become hoggish with the ball.

Further, this is probably moot: I’ll be very surprised if the LMA & the Blazers don’t get the signing done this month.

contrary to Outlaw. I remember vividly in the first game, at one point Outlaw caught the ball at high post, Oden was at low post, almost sealed his defender and got pretty good position. Outlaw, however, just lowered his head and started driving without even looking inside

Falcao & PoliSam

Joining your two comments. You’re right, Juwan/Greg front line offers far more than what Channing brought to the floor; and it might threaten backup-PF minutes from Travis. Juwan is still not the bruiser backup-PF that we were yearning for, and cant tell yet how Juwan fares against good teams. But this front line may offer a different dimension to Blazers

I see Bayless got some run, your thoughts on his progression?

LMA was likely just on cruise control last night . I mean he had his groove on the first match for sure. No need to press things is the way I see that.

I was at the 1st Sactown game, Greg sure didn’t lumber up and down the court. Look the same down there? I also noticed he was REALLY talking it up on the defensive end, calling out switches and picks. It was a real joy to see indeed.

The Oden Era, Day 843

by Heymoe on Oct 8, 2009 11:43 AM PDT reply actions

Bayless & LMA

No worrys about LMA’s stat line, for sure. He can score big as needed, especially when its a serious game. The replacement refs threw him off — called for a couple of offensive fouls on his favorite post moves (which also show up on his stat line as turnovers). At one stage he had more fouls than points. Whats hard to read — is whether LMA believes beastiness is necessary, that his rebounding is an area for improvement, and whether he really wants to dominate against small, scrappy defenders (even Corey Maggette gives him trouble). Oh well, hope you’re right and that nastiness will be his default when the season gets underway.

Bayless was mixed message. For the most part, I would gauge him as a competent sophomore — no more deer in the headlights, but not showing enough to contend for serious playing time during the season. The slash to the basket captured in the highlights was artistic, and he had a second similar great play. But, his fast break tunnel vision still offers sadness: 3-on-1 fast break, with LMA next to him, Bayless takes the ball himself, does not draw the foul and Blazers get no points. Even if he had scored — LMA was having a bad game, keep your bigs happy, reward them for running the break, get them jump started…

Through 2 games:
Oden per 36
26.4pts 14.7rebs 4.9fouls
Oden per 30
22.1pts 12.2rebs 4.1fouls

Hopefully Greg keeps this up, Coach will have no choice but to start him.

Very excited about Greg

Note that the Kings were horribly undersized. Spencer Hawes, their only competent center was DNP/injury.

But it goes to show that Greg will dominate you, if you dont put someone good on him. Jason Thompson clearly couldn’t handle Greg and fouled out. The Kings fans around me were shaking their heads whenever he snagged an offensive rebound, muttering what are you going to do against a giant like that — he was exuding Shaqness. He had 8 points in 8 minutes, and 20 points in 24 minutes. Against a team like the Kings last night, he would have put up 30 points in 36 minutes.

by 64-18 on Oct 8, 2009 3:51 PM PDT reply actions

Absolutely.

Probably helped that Joel was hurt, and Nate let him play through the calls. For a moment, though it was touch and go, whether the refs were going to negatively influence Oden’s game. Glad that Greg pulled it off. Hopefully gives both Greg and Nate confidence that Greg can work his way through the calls. Replacement refs were calling the game tight. But Greg did real well after that early bit.

Greg’s been playing some contained defense. On one occasion, Tyreke Evans went around his defender and Greg showed for a quick instant, and caused Tyreke to reverse direction. Greg did not overreach, just a quick step out and then stepped back to cover his man.

[Tyreke though proceeded to curl past his defender on the other side and got to the basket. That kid is amazing – we hung out at almost courtside for some of the game – Tyreke plays much bigger than his height.]

He collected an offensive rebound and pump faked about three times before going up for a dunk. But the refs contended that he moved his pivot foot when leaping to the rim. Oden adjusted to more finesse layups on offensive rebounds. Made one put back, and one layup in traffic; but missed quite a few. Was good to see him adjust his game, even with moderate success, rather than pounding away at dunks and getting called for it. Sure that his success rate will increase with more game time experience.

I include Howard because he might be better at 3rd center than Collins? I am referring to the decision of keeping Udoka, Collins or neither.

by Mortimer on Oct 8, 2009 7:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Hope we dont have to go into the playoffs without Greg or Joel. Hard pressed to imagine how we would perform without either our two big centers. Expect Howard to be better than Channing Frye was, but hope we dont need him at center. Still wonder if Collins is really any better option than Howard for actual game time situations. However, Collins would probably be better “sparring” partner.

On the other hand, would not be surprised if Howard gets some decent playoff time as backup PF. Especially if matchup is bad for Travis.

by FromAfar on Oct 9, 2009 7:26 AM PDT up reply actions

Tough call

First, I’d say that Howard would be serviceable backup center in case of emergency. Certainly better than the minutes that Channing gave us when Oden went down last year (touch wood). Beyond that I would have no idea how management would make the decision between Udoka, Collins or neither.

Ime was Ime. Energy, hustle, defense. Ime’s shooting is rusty. We had our 3rd string in, but without their premier guards on the floor (Kevin Martin, Tyreke Evans) the Kings couldn’t close the gap. Was this Ime’s defense, or Kings incompetency? Still, with Nic, Martell and Travis; and the option of sliding Brandon over to SF for short stints — have no idea the basis of keeping Ime.

by FromAfar on Oct 9, 2009 7:11 AM PDT up reply actions

I was at the game too...

I agree with all that has been written.

A couple of my observations:

Greg Oden looked confident out there and at times really looked like he was having some fun. I remember watching him tip the ball a few times in the second half, ultimately getting the foul. When play stopped he had the biggest grin on his face, and you could tell he was enjoying beating up on the competition.

I really enjoyed watching the team feed Greg the ball. You could tell they were confident in him, and it paid dividends.

LMA and Roy both seem slightly disinterested in preseason basketball. There never seemed to be intensity in their games (aside from a few first half drives from Brandon). This isn’t a complaint, because I would rather have 100% in the tank once the scores matter, but an observation on why their stats and game may not line up with fan expectations.

I love having Howard on this team. He wants to get others involved and shows a lot of patience on the floor to let plays happen. Greg should be most happy when (but more like if) he gets to play with Howard and Miller at the same time. I get the feeling Howard looks at Greg like a big, wrapped box on Christmas morning. Also, I love when Howard is on the floor with Greg, because he instantly makes the big guy look 20 years younger.

I know both have been discussed, but I don’t know who is worse, the Sacto Kings or the scrubbie refs. My Kings fan friends and I both agreed that the refs killed the flow of the game, and made it an almost unbearable product to watch at times. The best thing that can be said is, at least the refs are horrible against both teams.

Kevin Pritchard is very approachable. I said hello to him, and took the time to talk with me for a couple. Which reinforces why the Blazers are a class act, top to bottom.

Overall, I never had the impression the Blazers were in peril of losing the game. Even with the slight comeback from the Kings at the end of the game, I knew Portland would win. Its a nice feeling.

Heard Westphal's postgame comments

On Blazers, he felt completely outmatched, especially the lack of size. He said that the Blazers are a top team and on any given day could beat any team anywhere. He also danced around the refs (without actually saying the word), and the horrible flow.

The refs were VERY disruptive.

by FromAfar on Oct 9, 2009 7:34 AM PDT up reply actions

The depth on this team truly is unbelievable to really think about.

Przybilla, Rudy, Batum and Outlaw didn’t even play. That is four rotation players from last year! And yet we still comfortably won, stretched out 12 point leads w/o even trying and got over 20 points from our third string pg and pf (bayless/howard). These are guys who are not even expected to sniff PT in the regular season. I’m sure it is a combination of how thin the Kings are, especially on the frontcourt, and the fact that it is preseason, but regardless it bodes well that we might have 4 legit 15-20 ppg scorers in Roy/Aldridge/Oden/Miller. Then you add in 10 ppg between Martell and Outlaw, that’s 80-100 right there every night with 6 guys. Ridiculous.

by R.A.M.B.O on Oct 8, 2009 9:44 PM PDT reply actions

Yup. The Blazers have arrived.

Sure it was the Kings. But, still this is the NBA. To be in total control of the game when you rest 4 of Top7, with LMA coasting, and Brandon playing to get his rhythm, thats totally amazing. The depth is totally amazing. Also, like you said, we have tremendous offensive fire-power.

We can only have 5 players on the floor (dang rule change). Next step is to play shut down defense against the likes of Spurs, L@kers; and our nemesis teams like Nuggets and Mavericks. We get team defense down and we are an absolute elite team.
