Pressure of the Chalupa sounds like something Bukowski would write about on the subject of bowel movements.

by EvilKaramazov on Oct 7, 2009 10:39 AM PDT up reply actions

I had two friends that LOVED Bukowski. One of them went to jail, the other decided he’d dug a hole too deep for even him to get out of, and he ended his life. Sorry to bring down the JD, but Bukowski doesn’t bring up good memories for me (which I think is his intent).

I get the paper, so I don't care!

by Name's Ash on Oct 7, 2009 10:51 AM PDT up reply actions

that’s unfortunate.

I don’t read much of his works anymore. Sometimes, I do feel like a hideous person though, and at those times i seek out the comfort of those in the same place— bukowski. It’s at times, as Wilde said: “I may be lying in the gutter, but i’m looking at the stars”

by EvilKaramazov on Oct 7, 2009 10:55 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, I am not saying he caused it, but those two friends were avid readers, and they both read Bukowski. It was interesting to me that avid readers that are also troubled gravitated to him. These two friends never knew eachother; one was from Chicago and the other from MT.

As King of the Chalupas I am offended.

Chalupas represent all that is good in Blazerdom. To taste the magnificence of a chalupa is to taste the blood, sweat, heartache and triumph of all the previous generations of Blazer fans. To question the chalupa is to question the 1977 Championship!

Anyways, people love free stuff and it gives us another thing to cheer for during games.

Google Books
Online users of Google’s digital library and store would get free access to 20 percent of any book and be able to pay to read the rest. Every library in America would be able to offer free, full access to Google’s library at one terminal. And universities would be able to purchase access to the entire collection. Revenue would be split among Google, authors and publishers.

linx

Next Great Library of Alexandria or a bad thing, leading to other bad things (I’d say tower of babel, but that might be a stretch)?

by EvilKaramazov on Oct 7, 2009 11:11 AM PDT reply actions

A good thing

Libraries and universities should be doing it themselves, but they don’t have the funds. Google also won’t own the copyrights of the books as some publishers and authors fear (especially in Europe, but also in the US), but just the scan.

It helps a lot with copies of rare books that are all but abandoned, books that should be in the public domain anyway because they are ancient, etc. If you want to put together a new edition of an abandoned work, you will still have to get those rights.

And for the consumers it’s good too. Just last week I saved like $25 on a book where I just needed to look up something in one chapter.

a) It’s more comfortable from my chair where I was sitting for research
b) While just about 2 decades old it was a pretty rare book, and I’m not living 300 ft. from a huge university library anymore.

"I think he can still play" - Kevin Pritchard on Juwan Howard

by Norsktroll on Oct 7, 2009 11:24 AM PDT up reply actions

i agree with the public domain pieces and the rare books. This will set the stage for some serious copyright infringement on behalf of the users. Also, i think it will make it less profitable to be a writer, which i think has cultural consequences over time.

by EvilKaramazov on Oct 7, 2009 11:21 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah I wonder about the impact on writers too

It could open their work to new audiences though.

by Corvid on Oct 7, 2009 11:22 AM PDT up reply actions

i don't see how it will open work to new audiences?

are people that don’t seek out books by new authors all of a sudden going to seek out books by new authors because they’re on the internet?

by DrivetheLane on Oct 7, 2009 11:23 AM PDT up reply actions

It’s pretty hard to “come across” a piece in their library. It’s even pretty hard to find what you’re looking for. I did find some magazines from the early 90’s full of fun advertising

by EvilKaramazov on Oct 7, 2009 11:25 AM PDT up reply actions

It's not profitable to be a writer today anyway in most cases, and not just if you are unsuccessful

If you happen to sign a “dummy contract” with a major publisher, you can easily write 3 books for them and get paid just for 1. I know someone who was on national TV in the US and Canada and still didn’t make a profit on a tech-textbook that sold a lot. And one of my uncles is an editor/lector for a major historical and judicial publisher, and the circulation and profits from most of their books are tiny.

"I think he can still play" - Kevin Pritchard on Juwan Howard

by Norsktroll on Oct 7, 2009 11:28 AM PDT up reply actions

It can be profitable

It is just that someone needs to figure out how. I think the “world” is going to splinter into a billion little niche markets. Marketers will LOVE being able to laser target in on highly specific targets.

I get the paper, so I don't care!

by Name's Ash on Oct 7, 2009 11:34 AM PDT up reply actions

bad thing.

very bad thing. will contribute to the dumbing down of society if you ask me. there is something important about actually holding a book and having it in front of you. There is a connection there that does not and will not occur reading it on a computer screen.

and with the Alexandria thing, by now there are multiple copies of any great, historically or culturally relevant text so having them all in one location isn’t necessarily that important. Having them on google won’t make them more accessible than they already are in my opinion. This doesn’t make reading easier, or more likely, than it already is. What is the benefit?

by DrivetheLane on Oct 7, 2009 11:20 AM PDT up reply actions

There is a connection there that does not and will not occur reading it on a computer screen.

Do you think this comes from the fact that you are a long time book reader, or do you think it is a truism.

I am a long time book reader and hate reading on computers, but I think it is more because I am a crumedgon than an actual disparity between the mediums

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

by jonestr on Oct 7, 2009 11:22 AM PDT up reply actions

maybe some of both.

but i do think it’s true. part of what makes a long time reader, in my opinion, is the connection they develop with books by actually holding the book, spending time with it, turning the pages.

by DrivetheLane on Oct 7, 2009 11:27 AM PDT up reply actions

Kindle and iReader or whatever it will be called will solve that issue

And those are just the infancy of books. Also Audible is an incredible resource. Today I listen to almost as many books as I read, and I don’t see that changing for me or future generations.

I can’t listen to books… I find that I tune out at some point and stop paying complete attention… also, when I read a physical book, it allows me to imagine the story in my head better than if I listen or even read on the computer screen… it could be because that is what I am used to… but there’s something about reading a physical book that is just more satisfying for me

I see it both ways...

I LOVE to read books….the act of reading is truly enjoyable.

Yet I’ve listened to several books at times when I cannot read….such as in the car, or walking to work (iPod). Some audio books are TREMENDOUS…..such as American Gods by Neil Gaiman. I can’t remember who did the reading, but he was great. Others…..not so much.

If I have both available and I am in a situation where I CAN read, I will read. But audio books are more than fine as well.

The world does not have to be either/or.

i’m not a fan of audio books either, though I see how they would save a lot of time for busy people. but with an audio book, you’re getting someone else’s interpretation of the work and I don’t like that personally.

It's Amazon's eBook reader. Free wireless connection after you paid for your book, newspaper, etc.

Apple is likely to enter this market too. Sony already has. The screens are getting better and better, making it much easier to read on them than on a laptop. Digital ink technology is also evolving. And you can store much of your private library in it for a trip.

All of this won't completely replace books

A paperless office or private home is as unlikely as the paperless toilet. But for different situations, you might call it channels, an ebook or an audio book are superior. Students surely will like cheaper textbooks on a Kindle-like device in the future. And people will listen to books while driving or working out or doing shopping. I listen to podcasts and such all the time, and I’m sure I’m not an extreme case.

The screen and portability of a laptop doesn't compare

And the technology is evolving rapidly. Kindle 2 is already much better than Kindle 1. Just wait 5 years to 10 years and the resolution will be all but indistinguishable from looking at a printed page.

I always fall asleep with audio books

I’m not a big fan of reading off a computer screen either, but I think I would go for the physicality of kindle, since you can curl up on the couch with it.

NPR did a great story with avid readers and how they used the kindle, etc (wish I could find the story, but I can’t) Most really liked them, but admitted that they used them differently than books, and weren’t going to give up on the page-flipping thing.

How about the opposite:

I edit all papers and other works, which are written on a computer, on the printed version. It’s not just about being able to write on the paper, but rather to see the architecture of a piece in its physical form.

I would wager, for me, the same holds true of books. I can up the Brothers Karamazov and randomly opening it, I know exactly where I am in the story, both from the text and from the depth of pages in my left and right hands.

I am not really getting how what you are saying is the opposite of what I wrote? It seems to me you are arguing that there is an inherent difference to reading on a screen vs a book.

Maybe my question was ill posed. Maybe I should have asked something like “Do the differences between reading on a screen vs a book make book reading better.”

To me I would say that they are differences that do not add up to an objectively better experience. Subjectively I much prefer books, but that is probably just due to my personal history with books.

I agree with that. Everyone I know reads different—When I read something really hard, I need headphones and a hat. I could read a written book better and quicker than one on a screen or in audio form. One place you could ask questions though, is how the projected words affect your eyes. I would think 8 hours of reading on a screen would hurt my eyes more than that of a book.

I can go either way

I love reading books and I am an avid reader. But I could not get through Bram Stoker’s Dracula when I tried to read it. The journal-form the book is written in didn’t translate well for me on pages, so I gave it up.

But then a couple of years ago, I found a website that had the entire book hosted. The copyright had expired so that was possible. It was immensely easy to follow online and I finished the entire book in about two days. Some books I prefer to read curled up in bed, but others I think would benefit from some online treatment.

by DrivetheLane on Oct 7, 2009 12:14 PM PDT up reply actions

he's got to watch out for traveling calls and hooking calls with that move

Oden picks up his pivot foot just before the ball comes out of his hand to dribble. He also has his arm a bit too far out after spinning. If Hawes weren’t so surprised by the spin move, he would have been closer to Oden and it would have made the hooking look worse

by Magnum on Oct 7, 2009 12:30 PM PDT up reply actions

replacement refs cannot be depended on to make those calls consistently though… I think they’ll make a lot more calls ont eh perimeter, but miss abunch of the ones in the post when there is traffic and it’s hard to see exactly what’s going on

no doubt

then again, refs watch tape too. Let’s say Oden uses that move at least once a game and every time he hooks the guy. They might not catch it live, but they might assume it is happening (after watching tape) and call a foul.

by Magnum on Oct 7, 2009 12:34 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't know if the hook really gave him the advantage

It looked more like a result of Hawes losing balance on Greg’s first move and Greg’s arm happened to go up. Greg had spun and was around Hawes before the arm hooked.

by Name's Ash on Oct 7, 2009 12:53 PM PDT up reply actions

yeah, the hook on Hawes wasn't a foul

that’s not what I’m saying. Oden did have his arm out there though and if Hawes wasn’t so out of position it could have been called a foul on Oden

I just did.

I’m glad Tom spoiled it. I zaching hate snakes. And spiders.

by Roybot on Oct 7, 2009 1:07 PM PDT up reply actions

i'm not a big fan of snakes either.

i don’t mind spiders though. my college roommate had a tarantula.

by DrivetheLane on Oct 7, 2009 1:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh lord.

I don’t even want to think about that. There is no way in hell that person would have been my roommate.

by Roybot on Oct 7, 2009 1:10 PM PDT up reply actions

it took a little getting used to.

the only time it ever creeped me out is when I woke up in the morning, walked out into the living room, and saw what looked like two spiders in the cage. I was trying to figure out what happened, thinking it did some crazy supernatural duplication thing. turns out spiders shed their “skin” or whatever it is and it was sitting right beside the spider. kinda spooky.

by DrivetheLane on Oct 7, 2009 1:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Looks like you joined a week after I posted this story about giant spiders
My wife and I were given a free piano (long story)
and we figured that as a gesture of niceness we would give the person who gave us the piano a small gift. I had seen a guy at Saturday Market who had some preserved spiders and since the giver of the piano likes spiders we decide to give her that. So we head down to the market and buy a spider that I think is a tarantula. While we are finishing the transaction the seller tells us that it is not a tarantula, but a camel spider. In response to my wife asked why it is called a camel spider and are told that they do something really uncomfortable to camels and that he would rather not talk about it. So we walk back to our apartment freaked out that the only thing between us and an apparent camel-killing spider is a small box and a plastic baggie. We get home and put the baggie on the floor, but you could see the outline of the spider through the baggie which was unsettling. We ended up being so freaked out that we put the bag in other box and taped it shut. Even then I had nightmare of waking up and find that the spider had escaped and was someplace in the apartment lurking and waiting to strike as if I were an unsuspecting camel.

One time a spider crawled into my ear and laid eggs

I woke up one morning and they were covering my head in a web. I was so scared to move that they encased my head in a web and started to go into my nose and mouth. I got bored after a while and just showered them off.

the average american swallows a few spiders a year in their sleep.

we know this because spiders are routinely found in peoples stomachs during autopsies.

I'm an expert at killing spiders.

My wife has a massive phobia of spiders. Even the tiniest little ones scare here to death.

My best spider killing story is when my wife was out in the garage doing laundry. Sitting two rooms away, I heard a loud yelp, followed by the now familiar cry of, “AHHH!!! It’s a spider! Come here! Kill it! Kill it!!!”

She points out where it was, up near the roof, but I can’t see it. Finally after about two or three minutes of looking, I saw a tiny figure try to dart across the wall, and I smash it with a paper towel, thus crushing the tiny thing (I don’t like to make the poor things suffer). It was only when I looked inside the paper towel that I recognized a red hourglass shape on its stomach, along with the round black body of it.

Needless to say, I went through the garage the next day making sure the walls and roof were spotless and to make sure the thing didn’t have a nest anywhere near there, but it’s been a while and we haven’t seen another one.

Yes! Yes! In the face!
