Live Chat: 11:00 p.m. Pacific Tonight

We haven't done a live chat in a while.  Right now I'm on the road and on vacation.  Since everyone else has gone to bed, I have some time.  So if you'd like to chat about anything Blazer-related, I'll be in the thread starting at 11:00 p.m. Pacific (about 10 minutes from the time of this post).

Fair warning:  I'm blind as a bat without television coverage of the pre-season, so if you want to ask something specific about the meaning of tonight's events you're going to have to describe them to me first.  Comments are now open.

Maybe won't ever be THAT dominant

Shaq was super duper dominant…

But, I think Oden could be the best center in the NBA, which is more than enough. And 2nd to Howard is more than enough as well.

He's got a soft, but previously inconsistent touch from the line

I see no reason why he can be a 70+% FT shooter, but needs to find that consistency.

I am a little sensitive

about this because i felt he got a bad wrap last season while recovering from a surgery that according to every prior example, amare stoudamire comes to mind, pointed to the fact that it takes to seasons to get speed and leaping back to par for the player…

of course he was slow last season, it was only 1 year after that surgery…

I gotta ask, what’s your take on the ore-season blackout. Is it raelly a matter of economy, and if so, what are the real factors?
Selling seats? Or too spendy to get the TV crews on there + air time? No one buying ads? All of the above?
Do you think a time will ever come when A guy like Ben “the courtside live blogging dinamo” might be allowed to webcast the game with hand-held streaming vid?
I know the NBA needs their $, but how will new media and their hold on coverage work out in coming years?

Hello Dave

Dave again thanks for everything you have given to all of us out here in Blazerville.
That being said, I have some very, very good news for you. Yours and mine next great Portland Trail Blazer big man has arrived.

I saw it with my own eyes tonight.

Greg Oden was fluid, focused and unstoppable tonight. He was talking up the defense end of the court BIG TIME, and moving his feet ahead of the play. He is a transformed player that is going to be busting out this year like Forest Gump shedding his leg braces. And here’s the other side of that gold doubloon. Andre Miller is going to Sheppard us into our championship window. It begins this year.

I simply cannot wait for you to see Greg’s transformation with your own eyes.

by Heymoe on Oct 6, 2009 11:09 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree

and will add that Oden looked more comfortable and much quicker on the floor, he was definitely directing others especially on offense. They were throwing regular double teams at him and he passed very well out of them, setting up others on multiple occasions. His feet are moving much better on defense and he stayed out of foul trouble while remaining dominant. 18 with no dunks, just wait till he starts getting his mojo going ;) Andre looked great.
Starting lineup for Game 1 of season is….

Greg, Roy, Aldridge, Martell and Andre

by The Natural ala Mode on Oct 6, 2009 11:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Andre will change things almost as much as Oden (almost).

I agree as well

but when you constantly see all the Anti Corporation that you are accustomed to seeing in Portland (not just Blazer fans) you can totally understand why there aren’t many fortune 500 companies here willing to shell out advertising bucks to keep sports team afloat here.

if the culture in this city/state was a bit different, then I could envision Portland having 2-3 pro sports teams. sadly with no other pro competition in this state, the Blazers still can’t turn a profit despite having a solid season last year.

What about Batum vs. Webster?

taking this game with a grain of salt – I recall multiple times last year wishing that Webster was healthy and his offense was available. For all of Batum’s all-around game, I still got that feeling that Webster can be something special, even for this team.

That issue

is not likely to be settled permanently until a couple months in. I like both guys. Batum is the long-term answer for sure, I think. How many inroads Webster can make this year is one of the most interesting questions of the early season. I think you stick with Nic until and unless Martell takes it from him or you determine their blending with the starters merits the reverse.

We do need shooting

Roy and the small forwards are also candidates. If Brandon can hit them and either Batum or Webster can as well then we don’t need Blake’s shooting as badly. The accessory positions on the starting unit will be determined as much by synergy as talent.

Martell's advantage (strangely enough) might be his lack of being in game shape

By the midseason mark, he may be in great shape, while Batum be tired from all his extra Summer play.

A stated goal is to cut back Batum’s (and Rudy’s) time in preseason to make up for their extra Summer activity, so this might be moot.

Bayless played less minutes than Udoka

Is bayless here at the end of the season. I see him wanting a trade mid season if he doesn’t get some playing time. Tonight he had 2 fouls with only about 5 minutes on the floor maybe he would of played more other wise but it just doesn’t seem like the blazers plan to use him this year.

Will end up with a Wait and See answer from the Blazers. See how he develops. See if Andre and Blake stay healthy. See what other moves might happen.

The Blazers’ PG three years from now is either Rudy, Roy, or Jerryd the way the roster stands. That may argue for patience.

The backups of Kidd and Fisher also hoped they would be the starters by now, before those turn like 40

But in general I would agree and hope at some time they make the switch to younger players, especially in Jerryd’s shoes.

by Dave on Oct 6, 2009 11:32 PM PDT up reply actions

You've got it.

Bayless was originally projected to go #4 last year. He ends up at #11, traded to the team at #13, and may not have any real playing time for his first two seasons while most other top 10 picks are in the rotation of their team.

With Andre’s arrival, and Blake playing solid but unspectacular, Bayless may be very frustrated by mid-season.

versus just rolling with what we have? How much better of a player can we really expect to get by packaging two or three of our rotation guys?

by Clevelander among roses on Oct 6, 2009 11:34 PM PDT reply actions

It will all depend

on how well the team does in the first half. If they’re rolling towards 55-60 wins, no trades. If they’re ahead of Denver and Utah by a significant margin, no trades. If things slip, then look for a potential move.

Unless you throw Rudy in, don’t expect a huge deal. Maybe somebody looking to dump an ugly contract, but even then mid-season deals for big names that others are looking to get rid of are risky. If they’re that great, why doesn’t the other team want them?

not a very good outing

didn’t see that many minutes. on his first possession he airmailed a no look past out of bounds and there was literally no one within 15 feet of it. shortly thereafter he dribbled off his own foot out of bounds while being guarded by martell.

he did however get a nice ovation from the crowd when he was announced.

the refs called about 250 fouls tonite so he, along with everyone else with a pulse got to the line, and i think sergio was perfect from there.

his best play was an and one he created by, gulp, taking steve blake off the dribble.

So I think I have good perspective when I say: what is done is done. Blazer management obviously saw something they really didn’t like. Whether it’s right or wrong, it’s what happened. I was the biggest DeJuan Blair fan there was and I’ve come to grips with the fact that he just wasn’t going to be a Blazer.

I hope Jeff’s hip and he turn out to be alright, and the same with Dante. Or that passing up three times will come back to haunt us until a 4th big man is on board. The mythical backup PF banger, or the mythical PF/C combo man.

In Blazer news, Joel Freeland had a strong pre-season game with 30 points against Moscow. He could be that new PF/C man in some years. Unfortunately not earlier.

AND, will his knees explode when he’s getting out of his car tomorrow, or 15 years from now? He might last his entire career, but since his knees have nothing stabilizing them, they could literally go from walking up some stairs. Or landing funny in a NBA basketball game.

Hard to say, and I get not going for him. Ya don’t want to grow to rely on a guy whose career could end from routine movements.

Seriously

The Jazz have to get some talent back for Boozer even if they want to dump his contract. Okur and Millsap is not a deep-playoff frontcourt unless you have some serious chops alongside them. Kirilenko isn’t what he used to be. Jazz shooting guards are habitually anonymous. Deron Williams isn’t enough to carry them over the top himself with that lineup.

Don't get me wrong

You have a nice voice, but it isn’t what I deem a “radio voice”. I’m not one to get stuck on that though, only radio people do.

I’m more about the message and what is said over the delivery. I think you’d be great at it… a Blazers Edge type oasis in the sports radio desert.

I have a very hard time listening to sports radio since most hosts are so uneducated about the sports they cover. I’m not trying to knock anyone in particular, because I know part of it is just the game they gotta play to create conversation, but a show in the Style of Dave would be perfect, I say.

That would be the sticking point indeed

However nobody but NOBODY would have guessed three years ago that we’d be where we are. The success of the overall network could be one avenue. But if it comes to that, the Blazers themselves could be interested in having popular coverage if it was absent otherwise. I’d doubt we could take a salary from them but transportation? No clue

I doubt they’ve even considered it. For one, I imagine there would be several people from the Oregonian plenty cheesed off. And I’m not talking just beat writers either. Like business managers who actually have to pay to send their writers around the country. I don’t see any way it’s a possibility now. And frankly there would be ethical questions to ask even if it were offered down the road. I’m just shooting from the hip based on vague future possibilities.

by Dave on Oct 7, 2009 12:41 AM PDT up reply actions

I wonder if this is going to start happening, though

If the economy stays tight, and newspapers are cutting their coverage, it hurts the teams even more.

I can see the day coming when the team plane has reporters on board. Air Force One does it, and it doesn’t necessarily create ethical problems.

If newspaper reporters get a spot, bloggers probably will, too.

With Paul Westphal "running" the show, Sergio Rodriguez may ...

as well start at the 1. Rodriguez is certainly built to lead an up-tempo offense, while Tyreke Evans’ defensive prowess paired with Kevin Martin’s offensive efficiency would be a good match at the wings.

Stupid people have stupid ideas.

by AK1984 on Oct 7, 2009 12:42 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree

It’s also Sergio’s best shot at being relevant again, but I’m a’feared that the Kings are committed to shoe-horning Tyreke into the PG spot in hopes he’ll be a monster there because of his size.

They’re gonna lose anyways, they may think, so what’s it matter?

by Mortimer on Oct 7, 2009 12:45 AM PDT up reply actions

Gerald Wallace? I'd say "Crash" is a pretty traditional small forward.

As far as point forwards go, Tyreke Evans is in Andre Iguodala’s category.

Stupid people have stupid ideas.

by AK1984 on Oct 7, 2009 12:35 AM PDT up reply actions

That's true, Iggy is a better example.

Crash can handle the ball, but he isn’t as much of a playmaker.

by Mortimer on Oct 7, 2009 12:36 AM PDT up reply actions

He's prolly a more talented prospect than Bayless.

More highly regarded at the very least.

I stand by my belief that if you throw Bayless out on a bad team and let him PG it up, he’d have good Westbrook style numbers and would appear more like a PG than he does now, looking over his shoulder and trying to be what he isn’t as of now.

But, it’s all theoritical. Tyreke is a better prospect, and more likely to be a better player, so it’s not surprising if he looks better.

by Mortimer on Oct 7, 2009 12:28 AM PDT up reply actions

Probably you're right about Bayless looking better at the 1 on a bad team,

but I still think Tyreke will have a vastly better career at the point than Jarryd. Watching him tonight he just FEELS more like a PG to me.

by dario argento on Oct 7, 2009 12:35 AM PDT up reply actions

I won't argue that

Tyreke is a more interesting prospect.

I think AK is right though. A playmaking/ball handling 2/3 is what Tyreke will end up as.

by Mortimer on Oct 7, 2009 12:37 AM PDT up reply actions

Bayless is an SG on offense and a PG on defense

We’ve known this since the day he was drafted.

Evans at least has a shot to be a PG both ways.

by jksnake99 on Oct 7, 2009 12:29 AM PDT up reply actions

No argument here.

There are just still a lot of people on here that think our long term PG situation is handled with Bayless, and I’m pretty skeptical of that idea.

by dario argento on Oct 7, 2009 12:32 AM PDT up reply actions

Bayless will always have to play with a backcourt partner who has playmaking skills

If Bayless becomes a good defender and an efficient scorer, that’s fine by me. The questions are whether he’ll be able to do that, and if that’s the type of player the Blazers brass wants.

by jksnake99 on Oct 7, 2009 12:35 AM PDT up reply actions

I think as long as we got Roy (which will be forever)

The Bayless Theory makes sense. A scoring two-guard who can defend point guards.

Can dribble the ball up court, and hit a jumper, and score efficiently.

I think Bayless will be a Thinking Man’s Monta Ellis. He won’t be happy this year, but he’ll get over it.

by Mortimer on Oct 7, 2009 12:35 AM PDT up reply actions

I can see that I guess.

But watching Miller tonight make me want a true playmaker next to Roy. Roy is going to get some eeeeeasy buckets this year due to Miller.

by dario argento on Oct 7, 2009 12:38 AM PDT up reply actions

Watching a guy like Miller is great

There is more than one way to play the position effectively though. Monta Ellis with defense (which is Bayless’ upside) would be a very, very good player.

by jksnake99 on Oct 7, 2009 12:40 AM PDT up reply actions

I'd argue that Tyreke Evans' length and bulk make him a better wing defender ...

by Mortimer on Oct 7, 2009 12:47 AM PDT up reply actions

interesting

all i can say is that when he posted up steve blake, which looked like a veteran move btw, he seemed like he had a serious size mismatch.

i think blake is listed as 6’3’ so it seems weird that evans is only an inch taller.

he also was guarded by martell on a few possessions where the two of them looked very similar in size.

/shrug maybe the wing span thing is what threw me.

by colinmarsh on Oct 7, 2009 12:48 AM PDT up reply actions

I bet Blake isn't 6'3", first off.

I’d have to see it with Martell, but Martell is a legit 6’7" coming out of HS and I think he has grown as well.

His build and length make him big enough to be a SG, and a very big PG.

by Mortimer on Oct 7, 2009 12:50 AM PDT up reply actions

still big for a PG.

I saw him play tonight and he is surprising when you look at him. He looks like a wing player.

by dario argento on Oct 7, 2009 12:48 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, he has great size

He is huge for a PG, but I just don’t think he’s a PG for a winning team, but could develop it. I just don’t see him refining himself to the point where he’d be a good PG, and I think it would rob him of what has made him special.

The only real reason right now to make him a PG is to create a mismatch, but it creates so many other problems for your own team I think it isn’t worth it.

i’d say maybe 18 at the most. it looks like his playing time isn’t going to see the huge upgrade he was hoping for.

Beno has the big contract so they want to get their money’s worth, or at least feel like they are. Beno isn’t very good at all, so Sergio has a shot, but he has to clearly outplay him.

Kirk Hinrich and Tyreke Evans are physically different types of defenders.

For example, Hinrich — who possesses wonderful footwork — would have an easier time handling Chris Paul than Tyreke Evans; on the other hand, Evans would have an easier time handling LeBron James than Hinrich.

Or do they need to be put to pasture? Even with the run and gun back, I’m not sure i see enough depth there. Houston has opened up a spot, to be sure, but I don’t see Phoenix filling it.

Nate and Brandon will see to it

My only concern heading into the season re: Steve was that he would be unhappy playing less minutes behind Miller and opt out of Portland at the end of the year. But he put these fears to bed with his media day comments. Blake said he likes the direction of the team, and he likes the city. He’ll re-up for a hometown discount and McMillian/Roy won’t even have to twist KP’s arm to get ’er done

I think the negativity surrounding Blake has to do with the fear that he may be starting again, after Nate's comments that he is still the starting 1.

I love me some Stevesie, but he can not be the starting PG of a championship team me thinks. I watched Miller tonight at the RG, and he made me giddy. I don’t care if he can’t shoot the long ball. The guy is a REAL BONA FIDE starting point guard, and the defense has to respect him or he will make them pay. Blake will probably never reach that level of play, as much as I love the guy. I want Blake to become our permanent back-up point guard.

by jksnake99 on Oct 7, 2009 12:44 AM PDT up reply actions

You could be right

I’ve been banging this drum forever, but I really hope Nate uses platooning in the first half. Even if guys have a small role, if they know when it is going to happen (rather than hoping more might happen), and are ready to come in and do a job, it makes a difference.

You know you are only getting 6-8 minutes in the first half, but you also know you are going to be in at a point in the game where the job you do matters. You know what you are supposed to do, and that it comes after 10-12 minutes. It makes a difference, even if you want a bigger role, if you know your role, and know it matters.

It helps reserves to be mentally ready, and they’ll perform well if called on in case of fouls or injuries as well. And we have the depth that our second team will compete well against anyone.

by lee3022 on Oct 7, 2009 12:52 AM PDT up reply actions

If the hot is hot enough

by jscot on Oct 7, 2009 1:08 AM PDT up reply actions

defenses didn't respect Nic

but he made enough threes that leaving him open wasn’t really an added value decision for opposing defenses. He made them at a rate where they still chose to leave him alone but it wasn’t killing us, or even hurting us significantly.

by jksnake99 on Oct 7, 2009 1:09 AM PDT up reply actions

It hurt us

because it made life harder on other players, and his solid percentage didn’t matter enough because we didn’t go to him.

If they leave him and we don’t get him the ball and have him make it, his decent percentage does us no good. If he’d taken as many 3s as Martell did the year before, the difference between 36% and 38.5% is irrelevant.

They left him, and we didn’t make them pay for it. That’s why it hurt us.

Basically, it comes down to confidence. Our guys were confident a year ago that if Martell had a sliver of room there was a good chance he’d sink a dagger. Because of that, teams had to get out on him.

Nic didn’t have the confidence to put it up unless he was wide open, and we didn’t have the confidence to look to him to knock down the 3, so teams could slack off.

If Nic makes an extra three pointer a game on even the same percentage, everything will come easier. If his percentage bumps up a few points, that would be even better.

As author of Da BOM (Blazer Optimist Manifesto), I hereby certify that we will win 62 games in the regular season. Disagree at your peril.

by jscot on Oct 7, 2009 1:25 AM PDT up reply actions

I get where you are coming from

but when Nic was left wide open for 3, he usually got the ball, and he made 36% of them— for a very solid .540 TS%.

I understand that it made it tougher for other guys to operate, but still— when leaving Nic wide open, our offense was still very efficient.

It wasn’t to the point where defenses were made to pay for leaving Batum (ie to convince them to stop leaving him) but that’s just because the Blazer offense was so efficient in general. Batum open for a corner 3 was pretty efficient— just less efficient that other things the Blazers did.

So, I see where you are coming from, but I disagree that teams leaving Batum open hurt us. I agree with your last two paragraphs, but I don’t agree that Batum was dragging down the Blazers efficiency— just that he could do more to help it by improving his shot.

by jksnake99 on Oct 7, 2009 1:32 AM PDT up reply actions

Pretty much the same page

It didn’t “hurt us” as in making us worse, it “hurt us” in that offensively we would be even better if he were the deep threat Martell is.

Of course, if he is aggressively taking it to the hole, that adds a whole different dimension. The 3 is sometimes overrated — what you want is an offense where every guy punishes you if left open. I’ll take a dunk or two free throws over a three.

As author of Da BOM (Blazer Optimist Manifesto), I hereby certify that we will win 62 games in the regular season. Disagree at your peril.

… was just as valuable (if not more) to our offense as Martell’s better 3 point shooting would have been.

I still believe Batum is a little better on offense, and a lot better on defense, than Martell.

by jksnake99 on Oct 7, 2009 1:47 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, but you're a stat geek

The “stretch the floor” stat hasn’t been developed yet.

But because of our other shooters, it is true that we didn’t miss Martell’s “stretch quotient” as much, so it was less important.

Better on offense? More I would say they brought different things. Batum last year would have not been as valuable offensively to the 07-08 Blazers as Martell was, because we needed Martell’s deep shooting more in 07-08. Last year? We did fine with Nic.

We’ll do fine with either of them this year, because both are ahead of where they were the last time they played for us, I think.

No, but we do have things like offensive adjusted plus minus, which loved Batum last year.

I need to see a lot more evidence before I’m ready to say Martell is back to the player he was in 07-08, let alone ahead of it.

I think long-term

both the Euros will be more valuable individuals. The other parts to the equation that open up the door for Martell are short-term benefit and specialized skills that fit.

by Dave on Oct 7, 2009 12:38 AM PDT up reply actions

Weird

This was supposed to say that I agree that long-term Rudy and Nic will both be better individual players. But the variables for Martell are short-term utility and specialized skills that might fit.

He did win the starter spot in camp last year

But the injury has set him back to more equal footing with Nic. As Dave says – Nic needs to be consistent with his corner 3’s.

Martell has come a long way from being a kid who was sure he was the next MJ

If he and Nic can work together as the 2 headed beast at the 3 that will open up the floor and strike fear in the hearts of coach’s

by southern oregon on Oct 7, 2009 12:50 AM PDT up reply actions

Martell said himself he wouldn't mind if Nic keeps his starting spot, as long as he is in the rotation

He seems to agree that Nic is a very solid player, and it’s unusual yet great to hear from a player that he would cede his former spot to him and knows he will have to earn it back if he wants it.

most 7:00 pm games are over by around 9:30

tonite’s game also ended at 9:30. however consider that it did not have tv timeouts and was a pre-season game where very few timeout were called in the 2nd half.

if something isn’t done we’re doing to have 3+ hour basketball games.

i said this already so it’s beating the horse but in the first 6 minutes of the 1st quarter the refs were on pace to call 72 fouls.

talk about taking the excitement out of the building.

by colinmarsh on Oct 7, 2009 1:01 AM PDT reply actions

I thought refs called turnovers

These replacements really do things differently.

Will longer games help the minutes crunch?

Maybe I was wrong?

So yesterday I posted that I didn’t care too much about the Pre-Season not being televised. This morning I see 720+ comments since 11:00 pm.

Maybe I was misjudging the level of hunger Blazers fans have. Maybe The Blazers did make a mistake in not televising the games. Obviously there is a pretty huge fanbase that is ready to analyse everything.

I know I’m at a “fan site” but I still think it’s pretty impressive so many people want to discuss and debate and analyse a pre-season game.

So I’m changing my vote….The Blazers dropped the ball in not making these games available on television. The long summer had made me forget how well supported The Blazers are by their loyal fans. I won’t let that happen again.

I listen to parts…..I was at work…now I do find myself wishing I could of recorded the game to go back and look at. Oh well…….

"Mother Nature started this fight, I think it's about time we ended it!"

by Krang on Oct 7, 2009 6:27 AM PDT reply actions

I htink they definitely dropped the ball

Really, i’d be okay with just ONE game aired so that I could see the players and form some opinions before the season started. The fact none are just seems cheap and reality is that there’s a demand for it.

"Fernandez, to my eyes, is the Blazer who walks that walk most comfortably. A lot of Portland's fans (egged on, dare I say, by their local broadcasters) lament things like how Ron Artest or Yao Ming get to hit Brandon Roy's arms.

But I suspect Fernandez sees all that and thinks: We get to hit arms! Cool!"
