Gameday Open Thread: Kings

Here we go.  First game of the preseason: 7PM tip at home in the Rose Garden against the Sacramento Kings. Here's a nice game preview from SacTown Royalty's Tom Ziller which includes his usual brilliance...

A pseudo-haiku about the Portland Trail Blazers:

Rip City, lit again.
That's not a Jailblazers joke.
It's a "WATCH OUT FOR THAT BURNING METEORITE YOU GOD-FORSAKEN WOODSY HIPPIES!" joke.

Tonight's thread might be a little bit deserted interesting because, uh, the game isn't being televised anywhere.  Other than suggest that you check out 955thegame.com I don't know what to tell you.  Gamecast?  Maybe?

This post from Brian T. Smith and this article from Jason Quick and these links from Sean Meagher should keep you occupied until, I don't know, halfway through the first quarter. At that point I suggest going out to the hoop in your front yard, rounding up the neighborhood kids, choosing up sides and making the best of a depressing situation.

As always, I'll follow with a post-game recap late tonight with my first-hand observations from the RG.

Hopefully the Blazers play better than their television setup.

My question tonight?

How many ridiculous dunks by Blazer players will we see? Well zero for most us since its not televised.

Btw, I assume we still don’t want pictures in Gameday threads, right?

Not necessarily

It will still be videotaped. They ran TV highlights back when not all games were televised before.

I don’t think you’ll see a lot of highlights though, with all the focus on the MLB playoffs and the NFL.

ESPN is Eastcoast and they suck

ESPN doesn’t like to show good Blazers game highlights anyways. They’re in bed by the time our games are done. Hopefully our team will change their minds

I want to see Sergio

I want to see Greg. I want to see Nic. I want to see everyone.

Does Comcast really think more people will watch stale replays than would watch an exciting preseason for the Blazers? (Yup, I know it costs something to air a new program).

I think the Blazers just didn't want to pay for the production

Since they produce all the games in-house.

I also think Rebecca Haarlow isn’t yet back with the team. She does College FB games during much of the fall.

The counsels of impatience and hatred can always be supported by the crudest and cheapest symbols. For the counsels of moderation, the reasons are often intricate, rather than emotional, and difficult to explain. And so the chauvinists of all times and places go their appointed way: plucking the easy fruits, reaping the little triumphs of the day at the expense of someone else tomorrow, deluging in noise and filth anyone who gets in their way, dancing their reckless dance on the prospects for human progress, drawing the shadow of a great doubt over the validity of democratic institutions. And until peoples learn to spot the fanning of mass emotions and the sowing of bitterness, suspicion, and intolerance as crimes in themselves - as perhaps the greatest disservice that can be done to the cause of popular government - this sort of thing will continue to occur.

Hoo-ray for gametime

I’m excited their playing again, and Coach will get to see a chance to see how some of the line-ups and players work in near-game action. But let’s keep it a bit real: this is still the pre-season, these are still exhibition games and people are trying to get warmed up or earn a spot in the rotation or build some chemistry with new teammates; what they are not trying to do is win. Even so, man I wish this game were on CSN or NBA-TV tonight. Just seeing the guys in action would be great.

I wouldn't assume anything.

It all depends on the terms of the Comcast contract and any subsequent negotiations the Blazers may have had with Comcast. It’s hard to imagine Comcast just let the Blazers retain internet rights for nothing.

by BlazerFanSince1970 on Oct 6, 2009 6:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, those rights belong to the Blazers, not Comcast

So it’s not Comcast who’s letting the Blazers keep those rights, it’s the Blazers who tell Comcast which rights they’re negotiating for.

Very believable that the Blazers org held back Internet streaming as a failsafe. If streaming does happen this year, I wonder how quickly Comcast will give up and work out deals with DirecTV and Dish, knowing they’ll no longer gain customers locally.

by Timmay! on Oct 6, 2009 6:38 PM PDT up reply actions

You have no idea what rights were in the Comcast contract.

They may or may not allow the Blazers to internet stream video in the Comcast area, or even outside of the Comcast area since they obviously have rights to sell CSN to other broadcasters. They may or may not grant Comcast some share of the revenue from that streaming. There’s an infinite number of possibilities and it all depends on what was in the Comcast contract.

by BlazerFanSince1970 on Oct 6, 2009 6:55 PM PDT up reply actions

You have no idea what rights were in the Comcast contract.

Well, I 100% agree. Unless we have the contracts, neither of us know what’s up.

But it’s the Blazers rights to give away, not Comcast’s rights to own. They’re just buying the rights to broadcast the Blazers’ production.

by Timmay! on Oct 6, 2009 6:58 PM PDT up reply actions

This must be the "New Option" that I posted about a month ago.
Blazers: New Option to Comcast Coming This Season

Sarah Mensah, Chief Marketing Officer of the Blazers on 95.5 today responded to questions about the Comcast situation.

""We aren’t planning to go into this next season without an option for fans. .. Look for us to have a different situation as we go into this next season with Comcast, no matter what. … I think we are exploring a multitude of different possibilities for what it could be … not ready to really talk about what specifically is on the table, but I think fans should rest assured we’re not going to go into the season again this coming year with the same situation where there aren’t any options."

An idea...

95.5 cuts off the radio feed while streaming online for the game. But perhaps not every radio station in the Blazers Radio Network does. Maybe they’re supposed to do that, maybe it doesn’t matter if they’re out of area. I have no idea. But it is possible that one of these radio stations may have an internet feed that they don’t cut. That avoids having a illicit feed, as it would be a direct broadcast directly from a licensed broadcaster. That is, if I’m figuring correctly (which I will admit that I may not, I’m no lawyer). Someone might be interested in doing research, tough I don’t know if any of it will pan out.

for Blackberry users and probably others too, this is just the one i know

I downloaded Nobex Radio companion and it allows you to listen to many radio stations all over in the US, Canada, UK. That could be a way to listen to the game on the radio tonight, if it’s really on 95.5.

by bustabucket on Oct 6, 2009 6:10 PM PDT reply actions

where did you download the nobex radio companion? Is it in blackberry app world, or have to find it on a site?

We can rest him during the pre-season if he is THAT tired

I bet he’ll be fine and was just off in the Fanfest, though he did some great passes.

He had some off shooting nights during the regular season, after all.

How's the PCN going?

I’ll admit.. I don’t mind the fouls on Joel in the preseason because I want to see more Oden.

Not too well...

I kinda have an introduction. Working on calc.

The Kings have the best bench I’ve seen. There are easily 14 guys on this team good enough for every bench in the league. Now if we could only get some starters, I’d totally jizz in my pants.
