Around SBN: Nevin Shapiro Vows To Bring Down Miami

Junk Drawer of October 6th, 2009 A.D.

Everybody loves (to hate) a good villain. Darth Vader, Hannibal Lecter, Ivan Drago, Dr. Evil, Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan, Kobe Bryant, the Wicked Witch of the West, Ernst Stavo Blofeld, the Alien in the Alien movies, Hans Gruber, this Blonde girl, tominrehab, the list goes on and on.

But as for the list of sports villains, there really aren't too many any more. Sure there is Kobe, but aside from him; who else in the NBA is hateable (sp?). Part of the reason for lost interest in mens tennis is because there isn't anyone to hate anymore. Who would you list as your "favorite" sports villains (both current and in the past)?

let's get to junking!

[oh and by the way, prezofdeath, LTrain, and Starvin Marvin have all had their blazers fancards revoked for various reason.... just an fyi for y'all]]

The trailer is funny because

It is meant to be an ultra-serious, heartfelt movie, but it achieved fame and popularity because it is SO BAD AND FUNNY that the writer/director, Tommy Wiseau, said “screw it” and pretended he intended on it being funny all along.

So, the serious trailer, that ends with “this quirky new comedy” etc etc.

I don't think the following villains are "hateable",

but they are the closest I can come up with that are villains for me.

1. Dallas Cowboys. As a 49er fan, this is an ingrained hatred built from an intense rivalry. I hated the arrogant punks back in the early 90’s, but that rage has been tempered over the years, especially with the current “Mr. Magoo” incarnation. They aren’t hateable anymore because they are barely competent. Granted, that’s more than the 49ers have been for several years, but the Cowboys still haven’t won a single playoff game in more than 5 years.

2. L*kers. Need I say more? Dallas and the L@kers are a virtual tossup for me, but I have to go with Dallas because my formative years were spent hollering at the TV as Aikman, Smith and Irvin tormented my beloved Steve Young 49ers. I hate the L@kers more because of the players from the past decade. Rick Fox, Shaq, K@be were the schoolyard bullies taking the Blazers lunch money. Nothing would please me more than a dominating 4 game sweep of the Lakers, except for maybe a 4th quarter comeback from 15 down to win game 7 in LA, with the finishing touch being an alleyoop from Roy to Oden. Yea, I’m not smarting from ghosts in the past….

3. Brett Favre. This one is temporary, and only fostered by the recent miracle throw by Favre which absolutely devastated my niners.

4. KG. Say what you want about Garnett’s intensity making him the MVP defender that he is, but I simply can’t stand his trash talking. I think the line went from dislike to open hatred after he got down on all fours against Jerryd in that one game last season. Classy off court, but classless animal on the court.

I’m glad KG did the dog barking thing.

I don’t have to get on here and argue why I don’t like him, he proved my point for me.
I am a little disappointed he didn’t lift his leg and take leak, then Greg could have grabbed him by the back of the neck and rubbed his nose in it.

havent seen it, but that sounds like it could be construed as overcompensating

I was thinking what a coup it would be if he came out. Portland would love that guy at Terry Porter levels even if he just doesent make things worse. I think a good, active, and openly gay NBA player might be a really good thing for not only increasing the Portland fan base, but adding to increased exposure across the board.

It would be a loss on the road against the 4th ranked team in the country. That wouldn’t look so bad, especially if they end up playing them again in the SEC championship game.

Something tells me he’ll play though. They’re certainly making sure any changes in his status are updated up to the second.

that was maybe the most intriguing

movie I saw last year in an “I’m not sure what to think of it” kind of way. I thought Seth Rogan was great in it and I thought it had really hilarious moments. But it was also nearly profoundly sad. interesting

I just like it because it was filmed in Albuquerque’s zombie mall

For me it was just a really unexpected movie. It could have gone to being a more of a gritty cop movie (maybe I am reaching here) or could have been Paul Blart. I think it managed to toe a line between those very well.

yep.

he pretty much single handedly put baseball in the economy it now operates under, which promotes nearly zero competitive balance. He did have accomplices (Tom Hicks being the main one) and baseball does need a salary cap, but still, Boras is terrible for the sport.

by DrivetheLane on Oct 6, 2009 11:28 AM PDT up reply actions

the owners are such chumps

This is all happening because there is no Goodell in baseball. Someone needs to take control of baseball, and 30 owners can’t do it – they pull it in 30 different directions. Of course the owners will never support a strong commissioner, to their detriment. Someone should talk to baseball’s owners about what happened to boxing. – Elgin

Without you out there, we're nowhere here

by 22baylor on Oct 6, 2009 11:38 AM PDT up reply actions

the other thing with baseball is that the players union

is incredibly strong. I don’t know if any commissioner could come in and take that thing on effectively. It would just end in lockout which would be good for nobody.

by DrivetheLane on Oct 6, 2009 11:41 AM PDT up reply actions

You want sport villains with absolutely no redeeming quality?

Then look no further than the alphabet boxing commissions. The WBA, WBC, IBF, NABO, NABF, WBO, IBO, etc., etc.. Their basic function is to have corrupt rankings based on payment from interested parties and then throw their organization names behind fights that would already happen. If they say their title is on the line for that fight, they get a fat sanctioning fee off the top. They also push fighters around by threatening to remove their titles if they don’t fight assigned mandatory opponents who may, or may not, be worthy of this title fight they are getting.

Two organizations in particular have come up with some very creative methods for getting those sanctioning fees.

The WBC has recently created what they call the “Diamond Belt”. Rather than being a belt for a champion of a certain weight class, this belt is just for any two high profile fighters that fight at any weight. Does it mean anything? Not in the least, cause there’s going to be more than one of them. Does it make money for the WBC? By the boatload.

The WBA has also gotten very creative when it comes to getting that dough. Rather than having one champion for every weight class, they’ve decided they can make more by having multiple champions! How does this work? First off, there’s the “regular” champion. How novel. But if a champion wins just about every other belt in their weight class and is generally considered by all to be the best in the class, they’ll promote that fighter to the “Unified” champion status. This opens up a spot for another “regular” champion! But wait! They’re not done! Normally if a fighter can’t fight because of medical reasons, they either strip them of their title, or they don’t award another until that person can fight. Not in the WBA though! They then become “Champion in Recess”. Opening up another spot for, you guessed it, another regular or interim champion! Thus, with a “Unified”, “Regular” or “Interim” and “in recess” champion, they can have three champions in one weight class!! As a matter of fact, that’s exactly the case for the WBA in the Light Flyweight, Super Flyweight and Lightweight classes. They have only two champions in six other weight classes.

And they wonder why nobody watches boxing anymore. I still love the sport, but these commissions are killing them.

I like him as buy-low as well, but not for Colston. Having a player in tha tNO offense could pay off big time come November/December.

I would think about it. I hate giving you the Colston-Brees connection, though. It’s a high-risk/high-reward situation and if they click you’re dangerous.

Maybe. I think as far as fantasy deals go it’s pretty even.

I might offer the deal in a week or two

I’m not going to trade for Colston during the bye week with such a small bench, and Ronnie’s got his next week.

Snakes tried to pull a KP on me by offering Roy "i'm a gimp and dont' have hands" Williams for Tony G

sure Snakes, i love Broy not RoyWilly, but i’ll trade for Roy Williams just so i can dump him in the woods so Morty can pick him up and play hopscotch with him

Colston should be good with Brees, but just like Jennings with Rodgers he isn’t hot at the moment.

I'm the only one who has been keeping his "trading block" and needs pretty up to date.

At the moment I’m looking for who should be my two QBs (assuming McNabb is healthy as the starter), and solidify my RB rotation with a clear second guy next to DeAngelo. WR isn’t the big problem, but if I could get a potential upgrade there why not (not that many players qualify).

I have also looked at bye weeks, and might help someone there to win his matchup this week as long as it doesn’t really destroy my own chances short and long term.

In a vacuum it’s a good deal, but then I have 4 WRs who all would/could deserve playing time. At the moment Jennings is already kind of my backup the way things are going, though for the season he still gets projected the best or second best of the group.

…two months from now.

isn't stirring the pot exactly what needs to be done to make change?

Large masses of people complaining often = change. It may be seen as a redundancy in action and not intellectually stimulating. However, it is the way the desired course of action is often achieved, no? Ben said he’d send the responses on.

One excruciatingly smart person probably won’t get the games on tv, but a band of excited yahoo’s who are angry can make some change, whether their argument is intriguing or not. (I’d say see ‘Health Care Reform’ but then I’d get lambasted by the masses) I guess that’s my point.

Go Blazers! Go Blazer televised preseason games! Make your voice heard (I want to watch, too)!!!!!

Soon, Bloggers Must Give Full Disclosure
The F.T.C. said that beginning on Dec. 1, bloggers who review products must disclose any connection with advertisers, including, in most cases, the receipt of free products and whether or not they were paid in any way by advertisers, as occurs frequently.

linx

Viral Marketing is a great mystery, it seems, to me. And despite all of us being on facebook, traditional ad revenue is still ten times greater than that of the interwebs. Even stranger to me, the only guarantee for tv ads is the superbowl, everything else is a crap shoot. It’s ironic that Mad Men is a popular as it is right now, and advertising is in a great shroud.

at this point, I don’t think football can be related to his redemption… anything football screams “He’s just playing cause UO wants to win games”… never mind the fact that UO lost the only game he played in this year (and he didn’t do anything special to warrant not holding some of that blame [see endzone, safety])

is it that hard for him to issue a real apology?

like Forde said in the article, the letter “he” wrote to the UO paper is ridiculously scripted.

While Blount’s letter follows all of the dos and don’ts you can find at www.perfectapology.com, it also carries the unmistakable whiff of a ghostwriter. Call The Dash cynical, but the likelihood that Blount was the solo author of that letter is roughly the same as Rice’s chances of earning a BCS bowl bid. (“Agony of defeat”? Now there’s a phrase on the tongue of every college kid. If this were the 1970s.)

I’m tired of athletes talking through their agents and lawyers…

FWIW, I have no problem with him coming back this year… My only problem is with the way Chip Kelly and the Oregon Athletic Department handled it.

"Early to bed, early to rise, makes a woman healthy, wealthy, and wise. That's why you all are wiser than me. It's cloudydays."

by cloudydays on Oct 6, 2009 1:31 PM PDT up reply actions

All letters by definition are scripted… so it was edited and revised… You never hit delete when typing, or proof read a paper… or for that matter have someone else proof read for you? The Letter in question came from Blounts personal UO email address… maybe he had help writing it… who cares? It still came from him, it seems like he still meant it, what’s the problem?
.
.
Blount’s apologized in person or on the phone to EVERYONE involved… He apologized on TV immediatly after the game, he’s been nothing but apologetic since this happened… what he can’t do is apologize to every media person who wrote about the story, or every fan individually…

You don’t like the way the UO and Kelly handled it… so you don’t like the appeals process in the US justice system? You don’t like reduced sentences for good behavior or Parole… This was handled in much the same way a legal case would be… Blount plead guilty, he was sentenced, upon appeal, the court found is sentence to be overly punitive and reduced it accordingly… Would you prefer that everyone stuck to their judgment regardless of what happens later on?

I'm with you Ark

I read that article about Blount’s “scripted” apology and it kinda left me scratching my head. I’m sure if Blount had just slapped together an unedited, unproof read apology that took him 2 minutes to put together all the pundits would be saying how little he cared. So, I see his apology as him putting in effort to make sure it was a good apology instead of some half donkey’d approach.

And, I doubt that he’s done apologizing for what happened. I’m sure we’ll hear more apologies throughout the year.

suspend him indefinitely, gather all the evidence, and then make a judgement based on that? suspending him for the season and then reneging on that makes them look weak IMO

also

why is an interview apology necessary when he’s apologized to the coaches, and players involved by actually talking directly to them… Blount doesn’t you you or me an apology we weren’t there, he didn’t hit us… The same people who are outraged by this are the ones who tout MMA as greater than Boxing… so what are they really outraged about? It’s not violence, MMA is 100x worse than what happened on that field in terms of violence… At this point they are outraged for the sake of being outraged… Blount stories sell papers and TV shows, the longer this drags out the better it is for readership and ratings, so why not try to shoot holes into his apology letter, why not demand that he apologize better, why not vilify him a few more times to string the story out… after all, Blount did punch someone, and that’s the worst offense here right?

I don’t want to wander down this path too far, but in all honesty, the reason why this punch gets so much play is because unlike organized fighting, football DOESN’T allow punching during or after games. The NCAA and society at large frown on that.

Do you want to talk about the internet?

That’s perfect for me, I can frame something that will show it’s double edged nature and therefore fill out the assignment.

by EvilKaramazov on Oct 6, 2009 1:49 PM PDT up reply actions

What is digital technology? Is it simply a mechanism that transfers information via binary code? If we could identify what kind of technology you want to talk about, I can probably better spin something.

Happy birthday to the ground!

by phillyduck23 on Oct 6, 2009 1:49 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm trying to keep it simple with what I would use as paragraphs, and what not...

Ok, suppose man is a political animal, in the Aristotelian sense—He, by nature belongs to groups and forms families. To measure that which is the greatest contribution to man, is to measure that which most reinforces his nature. In light of digital technology, more specifically, the interwebs, we should ask what provides the fertile grounds for his political nature, and secondly, what is the greatest threat posed by the interwebs to this nature.

The internet dismantles traditional spatial boundaries on polities—we can be involved with our family and friends from anywhere on the globe;

The plasticity of the family unit dramatically changes in relation to the marketplace’s shift to the interwebs—you can order grociers, work from home, shop for kiddies’ booties, etc all on the webs.

Information for the collective is immediately available—dangers (traffic jams, alien invasions etc), solutions, remedies are all available via the web.

Misinformation is rampant and viral.

Human interconnectedness, false egos rein—we only present self’s we want to see. Our social skills in personal human interaction is greatly effected. The whole idea of ‘being a real’ person in the world might be underlined by the whole falseness by which we live out our lives on the interwebs.

-the last part is the big bad part of the interwebs, per some guy going by EK-

wow good work

the only problem is i don’t write nearly as well as that but thanks i will use some of that in my essay

I would just suggest what you think is most interesting to you, and write in that vein. Always write from the inside out—I bet as a blazer’s fan, you could write a sweet essay on how the internet has improved your ‘fandom’ and the negatives of it. Find your own passions and go nuts!

all the "good" stuff about the internet

Maybe this helps

The Nutshell

1. The Internet isn’t complicated
2. The Internet isn’t a thing. It’s an agreement.
3. The Internet is stupid.
4. Adding value to the Internet lowers its value.
5. All the Internet’s value grows on its edges.
6. Money moves to the suburbs.
7. The end of the world? Nah, the world of ends.
8. The Internet’s three virtues:
   a. No one owns it
   b. Everyone can use it
   c. Anyone can improve it
9. If the Internet is so simple, why have so many been so boneheaded about it?
10. Some mistakes we can stop making already

I'd have a hard time coming up with the best part of the internet (there's SO much that's great)

But if you want to talk about negative effects on communication, you could mention texting language making its way into everyday writing, making the average reader work harder to get the message. (Did I just sound really old there?)

overuse of text shortcuts = hard to read message = communication slowdown

by Corvid on Oct 6, 2009 2:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Unless you speak the text shortcut language, which can be learned, and then communication accelation.

The negative part for me would be the difficulty in conveying dry humor. It takes a lot of words to do what a dead-panned blank stare does in an instant.

maybe start by making a list and then researching their impacts a bit

cell phones
pagers
teletype
computers
blackberry
etc

I would try and think of things that a device is capable of that it simplified or was a feature that was impossible before this device.

For instance, I was sold on cell phones when I was out on a bike ride and a dude ordered a pizza so it would be delivered when we got back.

That was the best day

Spend an afternoon reading "Amusing Ourselves To Death"

while this book was written in 1985 and touches more on television than the Internet/cellphones/Facebook/Twitter/etc due to their non-existence or limited usage. But the same issues apply to those media as apply to television.

Here are my $.04

1. Most positive contribution of digi technology is the acceleration of technical development and social adoption. Email/Internet took 30 years to be part of the mainstream culture…Nowadays, it takes less than 6 months from trial to adoption of any technology. Because things are introduced faster, widely tested and easily adopted, it creates a domino effect that leads to solving medical issues, food replication, fail safe disasters, natural predictions, collaboration etc in a shorter cycle. Basically, technology will help us accelerate the adoption of ideas that are good…you don’t have to move a mountain, just one domino which leads to alternative ideas/solutions. Some dude in India could have a new method to cure Breats Cancer, we just will know about it, test it, and consume it at an accelerated path than before. Agriculture development is a key example of this. It has evolve so fast that solving world hunger through collaborative technology is within reach through new soil development, mirco-irrigation, and chilling hubs for dairy….Faster technology and faster adoption rates was a paradigm shift that was accelerated by the onslaught of the Internet bubble.

2. The negative impacts are false positives, the lack of due diligence, stupid ideas getting supported, short sighted-quick fixes (instant technical gratification), and most importantly, forgetting about our existing infrastructure with the growing population. I.E. the world still relies heavily on the the electric grid, and it’s one system that could put the world to a stop but it’s not sexy to work on, and not as valuable for the greatest minds out there to attack. We treat the grid as a commodity versus an essential service. So in a way, it’s like all the male BEdgers chasing a new lady Bedge, when in reality, they shouldn’t forget about asking the existing LOBs and help them put up a new profile pic once in a while.

Good point. My complaint about technology’s evolution cycle though, is that our cultural consciousness/mental evolution can’t keep up and doesn’t evolve that fast no matter what we do. This is seen if you ever go to a major museum—people run around like cockroaches looking at “Great Art”; they don’t stop, have a moment of reflection. They’re merely looking for the instant gratification or shock value.

by EvilKaramazov on Oct 6, 2009 2:57 PM PDT up reply actions

i agree...

our mental evolution is to change how we process the information, not if we can create new ones faster.

today, Norsk can scan a whole library without weaving through physical books, this reduce his time to research, learn, apply…which leads to a faster cycle. now multiply that with new testing equipment, data analysis, logistics, etc

instant gratification is the downfall of our technology growth. stupid ideas can grab on so fast by stupid people, it can’t be stopped.

My rathole side rant of the day has a sad topic: A series of suicides at France Telecom, a company that is restructuring (comparable to old AT&T)

I checked up on this, as I have some experience with psychology and organizational change management and am thus interested in topics like that, and this is really pretty dramatic. As an emergency measurement, management has now agreed to not make people change departments or put them into outplacement organizations without their agreement.

And get this, France in general has the second-highest suicide rate in Europe – behind Finland. A country that has a pretty nice climate in most of the country, is heavily centralized, great food, still places value on families, a 35/40 hour work week, social security for retirement, health care, child care, etc., not exactly cut-throat tiger capitalism, …

What’s going wrong there? There are some problems with immigration/integration in some cities, and social tiers/layers are not as easy to cross as say in the US, and people are attached to their jobs (not as much mobility between jobs and regionally, but that is true in a number of countries, especially in Europe but even traditional India). But apart from that, I really don’t see that much to worry…

A number of countries – and companies – with much higher workplace pressure has lower suicide rates. People in Europe also wouldn’t guess that France is #2 ahead of all the Eastern European countries.

http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/7d7e3df2-b2a5-11de-b7d2-00144feab49a.html?nclick_check=1

They have announced that they want to cut and/or are reassign about 10% of employees. That’s a lot, but not extraordinary compared to other telecoms, high tech companies, banks, etc.

Wikipedia does claim the rate is higher in Eastern Europe, maybe that was a wrong info

One time, I was in the navy. I wasn’t 21 yet and my ship pulled into San Diego, prolly early 1993. I took a train up to see my moms, who lived in a condo in Van Nuys with this biker tile layer fellow. We were partying and decided to go out to the hot tub, and me and my future step-dad, his Vietnam war biker buddy, and I got out there before my moms.

My moms walked up, took off her towel and stepped into the hot tub. I tried to not pay attention, because it’s gross to look at your moms in a bikini, but something so unexpected caught my eye. You see, my moms had an Andre Miller sized afro stuffed into the front of her bikini. I didn’t want to look, but the shear pubic volume, commanded my eyes to gaze upon their bushy multitudes. I’ve pretty much been anti-pube since then. True story, probably at least 13% of the reason I married an Asian woman.

If you can get the HD version, it’s better. Comcast isn’t offering it in a lot of areas though.

they have synchronized swimming on TV?

and at least something is happening all the time when golf it on. They cut to different players hitting different shots and it’s at least semi-interesting. Over half of a baseball broadcast is waiting for the next pitch to be thrown and on most pitches nothing even happens (strike, ball, foul)

Interesting info
The L.A. Times reports Bynum played with the second unit in a scrimmage over the weekend, and Phil Jackson doesn’t seem to want to play him late in the fourth quarter of close games.

It may seem odd, but consider Jackson has two superior players in Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom at his disposal. And as Wayne Winston noted on ESPN’s True Hoop, their playoff lineup thrived with those two and Kobe Bryant, not Bynum.

Pau as the big in the triangle is better than Bynum

Bynum would be better on a more traditional team, next to Gasol.

by Mortimer on Oct 6, 2009 4:33 PM PDT up reply actions

The center in the triangle doesn't have to be a great shooter

Shaq wasn’t, and that worked well. The PF though needs to be, and that helps players like Odom and Gasol who are perfect for this, along with strong wing players. The bigger question to me is how Artest will function in the triangle, though people tend to forget a bit that Ariza wasn’t a great outside shooter either. He just ran hot in the last playoffs.

File this under Ron-Ron being Ron-Ron, but Ron Artest recently told Sports Illustrated’s Arash Markazi that even though he signed a five-year deal with the Lakers, he’s planning on boxing in four years.

“I signed for five years but I want to box, I want to fight a heavyweight fight in four years,” Artest said on more than one occasion. “I started training already and I’m doing good and I think in four years I’ll be ready to fight my first professional fight. I want to get four professional fights under my belt and see how I do and take it from there. That’s been my goal for a long time.
