FanFest Thoughts: A Courtside View
We (the honorable TheTinfoil and myself) were sitting right behind the Blazers bench so it was my first time observing how they "communicate" on the floor.
1. Don’t let Steve Blake’s numbers fool you, Andre Miller is in a league of his own as a point guard. Steve was fantastic and it looks like he has improved his shooting and left hand dribble. But Andre Miller is the kind of point guard we haven’t seen here in a LONG time. His vision, controlling the plays, awareness and how much he communicates with all the players is just insane for being part of the team for less than a month. He talked the most on defense and offense…The best part is when they do score or miss, he tells them what to do the next time they see that happening. One play that stuck out was that Oden had position on offense and Rudy reversed it to Andre instead of kicking it down low. Someone got their hands on the ball, and it was a turnover for a score. In the next inbounds, Andre said to Oden "get down there low again and I’ll give it to you myself." Oden gets down low to the block, and Dre feeds him for a drop step.
On defense, a missed pick and roll rotation caused an easy Batum back door. Before the inbounds, Andre tells Martell he needs only "rotate a quarter way" then back to his man so it doesn’t allow Batum to cut.
In terms of taking it to the hoop and finishing, no question he’s the strongest player we got…I might dare say better than Roy in terms of when and how he takes it to the hole.
A few passes were off the mark but once he gets use to his team mates and they with him, it’s gonna be gold Jerry, gold!
Steve plays well within the offense so Nate trusts him. But I hardly hear him talk that much on the court or leading where guys should be…It’s night and day. The difference between Steve and Dre is that Steve will run the plays, but Dre knows better in the middle of the plays which options to exploit and when to adjust to score. He gets EVERYONE involved.
If they did a +/- on the game, I bet with Dre in, he was like a +10 for his team.
2. Jerryd Bayless is MUCH improved. Not just his shot, but he’s way more comfortable on the court. I think comfortable is the key word. He knows the plays, and was in the right situations on defense and offense. He’s also a big dude when compared to other players that close. He looks taller than Blake and way more intimidating. I think his arms look short cuz his upper body and legs are just ripped. But being that close, I was impressed at his size for a PG.
3. Greg Oden looks a lot better conditioned. He has that drop step down that is almost impossible to defend. I think Bayno taught him how to use his strength without just bulldozing people over. Pryz had a hard time guarding the drop step because that little separation is all GO needs that close to the rim. One thing I’m a little disappointed is that it doesn’t seem like he has his vertical leap back. In reality, it’s not even close to where he was before micro. I don’t think they work on his fast twitch muscle. His vert and ability to explode quickly was his main strength at Ohio State. (someone needs to get to their training staff and talk to them about this). We should note that he finally started doing squats this summer so he might be a year off from working/getting his explosiveness back. I have to remind myself that he is just 21 yrs old.
His lateral movement is a lot better and like Rex, he’s just way more comfortable on offense/defense. Just knowing all the sets and plays makes a big difference for these guys. GO does talk A LOT more on defense, which is a good sign. He also called out a couple guys for not rotating so that’s good.
4. LMA. He’s gonna be an all-star.
5. BRoy. Better than last year. His 3pt stroke looks more fluid so I expect him to raise it about 3-4%
6. Batum. Starter for the next 10 years. Simply a baller on both ends. I don’t know how you can’t have Martell, Rudy, and Batum on the wings and not push the court with Andre. That kid exudes confidence and he seems like he wants to take it to the rim.
7. Martell. Looks like he’s our secret weapon off the bench. Dre will make Martell look awesome. He’s not completely back, but no one hustle as much as he does. His tenacity reminds me of Kersey.
8. Pryz must have been working out in the summer…Homeboy looks a lot more ripped. And he practiced shooting about 6 threes during warmups (missed them all). It was good seeing him be lighthearted out there.
9. Travis. Still loves the turnaround fadeaway. Seeing him up close, that kid is LONG…With Andre, he might not need to go one on one anymore to get a shot, so it will be interesting to see how they fit together.
10. Dante C. Man, this kid was impressive. I would say with his strength and athleticism, he will make Trout expendable. The only problem is that he’s really a SF and not a PF. He looks even shorter than Martell. He’s the reason I think Ime will lose out to J. Collins.
11. Juwuan Howard. He’ s old but crafty. I mean, he knows what to do, tell guys things they don’t see, but his body is too old to help out. He’s gonna help the team though just by sitting on the bench and getting into guy's face.
12. Rudy. Looks tired. He needs to rest the full training camp.
It was good seeing these players up close…different perspective.E asily most impressed by Dre and Batum.
Btw Prez decided to hangout with his gf instead of going to Fanfest….smh
Here's a pic of Pryz working on his 3. I can see GO rotating to Pryz for a 3 in a game. Amazing all the firepower we have!!!
Peace. Stay Cool. Forever.

Thanks for the recap
I only stayed for the first half, but I agree with all your comments (tho Rex did more in the 2nd half, I guess).
Loved seeing Batum in attack mode. My only worry is whether he’ll sustain it.

He's a fake Euro
If he were a real one, his first name would be Joelski. He’s a counterfeit euro. Shoot, he was pretending to be a euro even before the euro came into existence. Can’t get more counterfeit than that.
It’s ok. He can’t shoot the 3, but he can rebound. We knew he wasn’t a real Euro by that fact, long before we discovered he couldn’t shoot. Euro bigs shoot the 3 and don’t rebound.
The end.

great take
i was there too and agree with each and every one of your points.. batum looks fierce, who would have thought it from a frenchman? andre just changes the whole game’s pace, just like roy.. he’s the better pg, but maybe it would make sense to bring him in with the second unit so we control the whole game at our rhythm.. oden looked good and seemed to be having fun.
the whole experience was ALOT different than last year, way more people, much less love from the organization and a competitive scrimmage. once again, it’s a great day to be a blazer fan.

Greg's conditioning
The big thing was to get some weight off and get him back in overall condition. The fast twitch is a secondary concern — he’s going to be a beast even before he regains his vert.
It will come. A much better GO this year is still going to be well short of what he’ll be in three years.

That's what I'm thinking too...
Amare didn’t have his full explosiveness until year 2 after micro.
One other thing I noticed about Greg is that he’s great at blocking out…But does he need to? Dwight Howard just goes for the ball, Greg finds a guy to block out every time…and sometime his defender is about 6 feet away from the basket which draws him out from the paint.
I think with his size and inside position, I like to see him anticipate where the ball will land once it’s released rather than look for a guy to block out after the release. A few times, he couldn’t relocate the ball after finding a player to block out.
I know, total nit picky stuff but just curious what others thought….
I expect GO to be good this year, and great next
by broyposse on Oct 5, 2009 1:28 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Technique first
I’d rather a guy block out too much rather than not enough. He’ll learn the times to just go get the ball, that’s experience. Basically, if the man you are blocking out is too far out, you are in offensive rebound mode — go get it.
I can guarantee they’ll be working with him on this. But he’s been well-coached on this, and the instinct to block out is strong, and that’s the way it should be.
If he’s playing Dwight Howard, I don’t much care if he blocks him out and takes both of them out of the play. Against Orlando, our other guys will be strongly focused on defensive rebounds as well, and I like the LMA/Rashard matchup in that case.
The day may come when he faces a guy who is as big, quick, and skilled as he is. Against such an opponent, that blocking out instinct and technique is going to stand him in good stead.

I _love_ how he always boxes someone out
And he totally boxes whoever he boxes out as well… they aren’t getting that ball.
Especially compared to LMA, Trout, etc… I love it.
Like Scot says, experience will help him naturally identify (without thinking) which balls to just go get and when to box out. Fundamentals matter, and for now, keep boxing whoever you can and then go get that ball.
He will lead the league in offensive rebounding, even with our slow pace.

I'm also a huge fan of GO's blocking out on the boards
He takes the biggest guy on the opposing team and blocks him out so thoroughly that the poor guy gives up completely on getting that board. The result: if GO doesn’t get the board, one of his teammates is likely to. That’s a center doing his job—not worrying about his rebounding stats.
There’s a REASON the Blazers’ rebounding numbers shot up last season. GO was a big part of that.

Regarding Greg's vertical..
It looked to me like he got pretty dang high on that alley-oop. Someone posted a photo of it, and he almost had his head by the rim. I’m not sure, maybe it looked better than it actually was?
by Bnaz777 on Oct 5, 2009 12:52 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
yeah, it was impressive but it didn’t seem that high or out of the ordinary. I was completely surprised by Dante’s vertical…He took over the fanfest warmup slam dunk award from Rex this year. The between the leg windmill was made with ease

and even if he did get pretty high, it wasn’t EXPLOSIVE leaping. He used to be OH SWEET MOMMA HE JUST KILLED THAT RIM. Now it’s “Ooh, nice dunk.”

I would have given Bayless an A
if he gave up the ball even once on all those fastbreak opportunities instead of taking it to the hole every time. In a way, Bayless and Rudy are who I consider to be opposite guys of the point spectrum. Rudy has outstanding court vision but has average-below average handles. Bayless has excellent handles but has tunnel vision. If only we could give Bayless Rudy’s vision and give Rudy Bayless’ handles.

Bayless got a C or a D in my book
He just doesn’t make the right pass. There was one fast break in particular where LMA hustled (like he always does) down the court and was literally standing all alone at the block. Bayless was bringing the ball up the court and never saw him, and didn’t even try to pass it to him before he got fouled trying to shoot (or something, I don’t remember exactly). On the slow-mo replay, you could see the Bayless’ eyes were focused down on his defender’s feet, like he was trying to see which way to go to beat his man instead of looking to see where the other four guys are.
by unblindloyalty on Oct 5, 2009 4:10 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yea, I can clearly observe when he "commits" to taking it to the hole.
Being able to kick out is a requisite skill for a good pg. It is almost criminal for a player with the ability to penetrate like Bayless has such bad passing instincts. D-Rose would have dropped like 20 asts a game if he played here last year, just because of all our spot up shooters.

obviously Andre Miller is a better pg than Steve Blake
but Blake needs to start. He fits better with the starters but more importantly, Miller fits better with the 2nd unit. He has explosive players in Rudy, Martell and Travis surrounding him in that unit, but they can only be as xplosive as the pg they play with; Blake is not that.
by 64-18 on Oct 5, 2009 2:12 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I agree with your conclusion on Miller running the break better.
But Steve Blake is way more explosive than Miller.
IMO what makes Miller a better PG on the break is he knows when to wait and when to put on the gas. To see all the defenders around him and to know when to let one get just enough by to give him room for the pass; that is what I find to be Miller’s advantage on the break.
(Of course, with Batum, you just give him the ball and he’ll beat everyone down the court…)

I completly agreed with your thoughts on Dre.
I was reading Timbo’s domination of the game day thread, and I thought he couldn’t be less insightful on the guy. He wasn’t busting his tail, but Nate told them not to. He’s just old enough to listen and not get caught up in the moment like everyone else. Miller is a true leader at pg reminding me of the Porter days. Strickland is the last guy to somewhat resemble that type of guard on this team. It was wierd watching, almost like Dejavu. Wow that’s right pg’s lead the team. He will be an amazing leap for our team in true bbiq. All the Timbo type comments are short sighted on what this guy brings. He is a ridiculous leader of the hardwood. I don’t care if he starts or backs up, he will have a huge impact, and he will find his way in the final minutes at some point. He will find a way to work with BRoy. His ego is not an issue. He will put the team in the most advantageous positions while he is on the court. Look at what the White team did with him on the court and off.

I hear what you're saying.
Sure, I would love it if Andre had a reliable perimeter jumper, and that’s definitely a staple in our offense, good shooting….but I’m SICK of seeing our team take jumpers! Give me a PG who can get to the rack, draw fouls, and create for teammates! Rondo’s bad shooting didn’t seem to hurt Boston 2 years ago. Yes, Dre only has 2 ( maybe 3 ) years left in the tank, but he is still a big upgrade at the point for us, and we didn’t have to give up anything to get him. He will only make our rebounding advantage that much better, too.

Carl Landry pulls off being a PF when he’s really 6’7’’and not the bulkiest forward. You can be a backup 4 as long as you have a nose for rebounding and an effective mid-range jump shot.

Injury concerns.
Ya don’t wanna come to rely on a guy who any moment could have his knees blow out… literally. It could go at any time.
Might be after his playing days are done, but I’m sure teams didn’t want to take that risk.

Right
We get into the playoffs, counting on the guy, and he blows out. I’d rather have Pendergraph, who we know is going to be healthy.
Right? :)
I understand the thinking on this, but I wonder if KP’s “long term view” might have zapped him on this one. We really only needed one year out of Blair, by next year we’ll have Dante or Jeff (whichever one we ended up with) a little more developed, and can use our MLE for a backup big if needed.
You want to take the long term view for key players, but a backup PF isn’t exactly hard to replace fairly quickly.
That said, I’m ok with Travis, Juwan, and possibly Dante and/or Jeff later in the season as backups to LMA. But if he gets hurt, it seems like Blair might have been a nice guy to be able to throw out there in tandem with Travis to cover our PF minutes.

I agree with those who think it is unethical to have a
“One or three years and it’s worth it” stance on the kid’s knee.
I’d rather not deal with the repercussions, especially when you EVERYONE knows it can happen. It’s not like a normal injury, where you can’t predict it. We can all predict Blair’s knee(s) going and we’d all be right.
Yeah, we could find him a replacement, but that’s a hard thing to go through and be responsible for. As an organization, we’d be responsible for putting him out there, knowing it could go at any time, and then responsible for the aftermath. It’s just a shaky situation.
His knee might last forever, even with this you can’t REALLY predict it. But it has to be why almost every single team passed on him, when he clearly is pretty good at what he does.

When reached 39 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!

Even if we didn't take him, somebody should have grabbed him before the 37 pick.
I don’t get how teams that needed a big wouldn’t take a flyer on the guy.

Especially coming off the bench
A lot of the top reserve 4’s in the league are really 3/4’s. Makes ’em versatile. Millsap fit that mold, until the Jazz finally realized he was better than Boozer.

I'm confident you got that shout out to Travis for me
after he snared the first rebound of the game… positive sign of things to come

great news.
if the improvements you describe are accurate, the Blazers are going to be oh so dangerous this year!

So how many games do the Blazers have to lose till people start calling Andre a team cancer...
Or will you find a way to blame his inability to hit the 3 pointer on Mr. Steve Blake?

Don't worry
a few oops to Rudy and Greg, and they’ll be calling for Blake’s head instead.
We don’t have to lose any games for this stuff. All it takes is winning a few close games against bad teams, and the sidebar will fill with fanposts bemoaning what is wrong, and proclaiming that certain players have to go, etc.
And we’ll have at least one bad loss to a playoff team on the road, where we’re out of it from the start, and Bedge will go absolutely insane. All it will take is one.
It happened last year after we got whipped in Boston. Yet, somehow, despite that loss, we won 54 games, 13 more than the year before, and five more than any of the pundits predicted. But we were doomed, doomed, doomed.
It will happen this year, too.

predicting that BE will be flooded with overly critical sidebar posts after a loss
is like predicting that a fire will happen in California next summer
It’s going to happen, the only question is how bad it’ll be. Too bad we can’t set backfires or clear brush to mitigate the extent of the damage here.

Well, SB Nation was down for a couple hours this morning
We could arrange that after a bad loss. You still have to put out the fires, but at least it slows the spread.

I was most impressed by Blake..
He played very well. He fits so good with the starting unit, and has such a good connection with them. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Blake starting for a while. Blake is very competitive and a hard worker; he did not look like he was ready to give up his starting spot.
Oden looked very comfortable and also like he was having a lot of fun. He still seems a little bit slow up the floor, but certainly better than last season.
I was pretty surprised how well Outlaw did playing against LMA. He was able to front him and deny him the ball for a bit. He looked like he was rebounding fairly well, and was also driving it in a bit.
Websters shot looked pretty rusty still, but he definitely had some spring in his step, so that was good to see. However, Batum just looked amazing. He had a good mid range shot that he took instead of settling for the three. He ran the floor good, and got some easy looks at the rim.. i wanted to see that reverse jam go in, but i was just as happy to Oden block it.
LMA is a beast, and think that pretty much sums up that.

I've got a 52" HDTV with surround sound that kicks arse
and I would rather watch a game live, even in the 300 level. I like the energy of the crowd.

Yes, but you had to hear the non-stop inane gabbing by the t.v. "announcers"
Not to mention the inexplicable cut-aways so that we could SEE as well as hear the inane gabbing. Worst broadcast in sports history.
I’m with you about the insufferable Blazer in-game “entertainment,” though. The team has a dynamite product—the basketball games themselves—but they don’t believe in it.
