Around SBN: Dissecting Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

10/5/09 JD: Packers-Farvkings Edition

As a native Minnesotan and perpetually-in-angst Vikings fan I'm pretty excited for this game tonight. Farve coming over the Vikings made me kind of queasy at first (more angst) but since he's settled into the team and said the right things - especially about AD being the guy - I think it was the right move.  We'll see if he can hold up for a whole season though - the Vikes line has been shaky (new center).

Farve, in his ESPN interview, today told the Green Bay fans "it was 16 great years. You can't take that run away. Enjoy it." Hmmm. Good interview though.

The media machine is certainly hyping this game beyond belief but I'm not sure it can be over-hyped. It really is surreal and unprecedented in sports. If you disagree or can name a more extreme example of a superstar going to an arch-rival please leave it in the comments.

I can't believe Farve said he might not play every game.

Who does this guy think he is? Shaq?

All joking aside, if that’s true: if you can’t play every week, you’re probably not healthy enough for the NFL.

I know less than half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Brett Favre, who has a streak of 273 consecutive starts, has some leeway with his comments.

Yet, with that noted, I think Favre will start every game this season, so long as his health permits it.

Stupid people have stupid ideas.

I wonder when we might get a blazers dancers swimsuit shot (just to not be completely off-topic)?

His fiance did 5 random fans a HUGE favor by allowing us into the lockerroom for no apparant reason. She was classy, nice and very very sweet and gracious. I am very grateful to her for this oppurtunity and we wont soon forget it.

So anyone else w/ snarky comments, I would never fight a woman over a man, I would never disrespect a person just b/c i have a pretend crush on her husband and any comments are inherantly disrespectful to the very person who facillitated this.. so STFU it’s not funny.

Yeah, that was a lot of fun

Welch was one of my mom’s favorites. She always talked about him striking out Reggie Jackson as a rookie in the World Series (77 or 78) It was hard seeing him go to the A’s right before ‘88.

Manny Mota and his family were the greatest; they lived like 20 minutes away from us when we were in Tijunga. I don’t remember him playing at all; he was really just the first base coach in all my memories. But he had a great room in his house dedicated to a lot of his baseball accomplishments. It was always so cool to look at old copies of the Guinness Book of World Records and see his name there. I remember my mom would open up our house to be a host for some of the Dominican kids he brought out to his baseball camp (that my older brother got to be in).
Fun times; great guy. Every time he saw me he’d say the same thing.. Danny My Friend!! in a great thick accent.

We’re not as close now but am still close with one of his daughters (who had great big sisterly advice to give me when I told her I was getting married at 20 to a girl I knew for a year but she still came to the wedding).

Probably less assists and rebounds too. He was the centerpiece for a lot of sets, but I don’t know if they should do that when he returns. I guess you want the ball in the hands of your best scorer, but will he be the best creator for that team? Doubt it, especially with Brooks improving.

Shavlik had a good game in the Miami scrimmage. Didn't start, but drew two charges in five minutes which got noted by reporters and team members

They also all but confirmed that they want to use Beasley as a small forward, with Jermaine O’Neal at center and Haslem at power forward.

That's an interesting lineup

I could even see it work great on a team like the Cavs, except I’m not sure that Jermaine can handle Shaq. I do think Beasly V James would not be great for ’Bron.

Bron is a lot bigger and quicker than Beasley.

LeBron would kill Beasley right now.

Beasley’s size would help him, but LeBron has so much more intensity on defense that Beasley would be worthless on offense.

"The playoffs now are my grind. My grind for a championship,'' Roy said. "Whatever needs to be done to get there I'm gonna do it.''

by Quik_Baller on Oct 5, 2009 10:44 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, and Beasley was AWFUL on defense as a rookie

He’s pretty athletic, but was a one-way player… having him more on the perimeter on defense will actually hide some of his flaws with strong defenders like a healthy Jermaine and Udonis, but I don’t think he can keep up with good SFs.

by Mortimer on Oct 5, 2009 10:45 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, I know there is a lot of homerism in this comment...

But I think Batum may be the overall better player. At least as a SF. His D is WAAAAYYYY better and his looking good as a role player and partial creator on offense.

"The playoffs now are my grind. My grind for a championship,'' Roy said. "Whatever needs to be done to get there I'm gonna do it.''

by Quik_Baller on Oct 5, 2009 10:47 AM PDT up reply actions

Beasley is really talented

But with his mental makeup that we know of (super annoying in HS, having trouble letting the past go, immaturity) and his skillset much more offensively based, I know I’d rather have a roleplaying SF like Batum over a guy who could be a star but you have to compensate a LOT for.

by Mortimer on Oct 5, 2009 10:49 AM PDT up reply actions

I feel like Beasley's absolute ceiling as a SF would be Melo

And you aren’t Melo’s biggest fan anyway. If things go just a bit wrong, Beasley is Derrick Coleman instead.

"I think he can still play" - Kevin Pritchard on Juwan Howard

by Norsktroll on Oct 5, 2009 11:02 AM PDT up reply actions

Haha, I do like Melo

I used to defend him all the time here when people were really ragging on him.

I just don’t think he’s a superstar, since ya need to compensate for him, but if Beasley turns into Melo, that’d be terrific. And Riley LOVES Melo, says he’s the best SF ever… which is… well… wrong.. but… he’s Riley… so…

by Mortimer on Oct 5, 2009 11:07 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, Michael Beasley should definitely copy his game after Carmelo Anthony.

The Miami Heat are right to play Beasley at small forward, although he ought to see plenty of time at both forward spots.

by AK1984 on Oct 5, 2009 7:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, a little Homerish.

People forget just how good Beasley was in college. His offensive skill set is ridiculous. Batum is a better defender right now for sure, but Beasley is still a better talent.

It's the lack of an all-round game

Batum is better at defense than Beasley is at offense, BUT Beasley could be great if he pulls it all together.

I think Batum will be a star role player…

So it becomes the age old debate of what helps more— a star who puts up stats but with clear weaknesses in his all-round game, or a solid role player?

Nothing great and should get destroyed by Oden/LMA/Batum, but it’ll do well in the east.

If Jermaine is healthy like he says

He has been a great defender in the past and it could work well, with the mystery link being Beasley at SF, though that is his best position for long term success in the NBA.

Yeah, what most of us do

Since these are “official” measurements, is always check Draft Express’ pre-draft measurements taken at the pre-draft camps.

Height, weight, everyone lies a LOT, so most of us double check what “they” say because it’s always wrong.

Some guys grow, like Oden has supposedly grown over an inch, and I am sure Lebron has grown. And some guys athletic times are better than at the pre-draft camp, like LMA did really bad but is more athletic than his times suggest, and Monta Ellis looked downright SLOW in his times… and he’s one of the fastest players.

But the height and weight and length measurements can be deemed accurate.

Fanfest Thoughts:

We were sitting right behind the Blazers bench so it was my first time observing how they “communicate” on the floor.

1. Don’t let Steve Blake’s numbers fool you, Andre Miller is in a league of his own as a point guard. Steve was fantastic and it looks like he has improved his shooting and left hand dribble. But Andre Miller is the kind of point guard we haven’t seen here in a LONG time. His vision, controlling the plays, awareness and how much he communicates with all the players is just insane for being part of the team for less than a month. He talked the most on defense and offense…The best part is when they do score or miss, he tells them what to do the next time they see that happening. One play that stuck out was that Oden had position on offense and Rudy reversed it to Andre instead of kicking it down low. Someone got their hands on the ball, and it was a turnover for a score. In the next inbounds, Andre said to Oden “get down there low again and I’ll give it to you myself.” Oden gets down low to the block, and Dre feeds him for a drop step.

On defense, a missed pick and roll rotation caused an easy Batum back door. Before the inbounds, Andre tells Martell he needs only “rotate a quarter way” then back to his man so it doesn’t allow Batum to cut.

In terms of taking it to the hoop and finishing, no question he’s the strongest player we got…I might dare say better than Roy in terms of when and how he takes it to the hole.

A few passes were off the mark but once he gets use to his team mates and they with him, it’s gonna be gold Jerry, gold!

Steve plays well within the offense so Nate trusts him. But I hardly hear him talk that much on the court or leading where guys should be…It’s night and day. The difference between Steve and Dre is that Steve will run the plays, but Dre knows better in the middle of the plays which options to exploit and when to adjust to score. He gets EVERYONE involved.

If they did a +/- on the game, I bet with Dre in, he was like a +10 for his team.

2. Jerryd Bayless is MUCH improved. Not just his shot, but he’s way more comfortable on the court. I think comfortable is the key word. He knows the plays, and was in the right situations on defense and offense. He’s also a big dude when compared to other players that close. He looks taller than Blake and way more intimidating. I think his arms look short cuz his upper body and legs are just ripped. But being that close, I was impressed at his size for a PG.

3. Greg Oden looks a lot better conditioned. He has that drop step down that is almost impossible to defend. I think Bayno taught him how to use his strength without just bulldozing people over. Pryz had a hard time guarding the drop step because that little separation is all GO needs that close to the rim. One thing I’m a little disappointed is that it doesn’t seem like he has his vertical leap back. In reality, it’s not even close to where he was before micro. I don’t think they work on his fast twitch muscle. His vert and ability to explode quickly was his main strength at Ohio State. (someone needs to get to their training staff and talk to them about this). His lateral movement is a lot better and like Rex, he’s just way more comfortable on offense/defense. Just knowing all the sets and plays makes a big difference for these guys. GO does talk A LOT more on defense, which is a good sign. He also called out a couple guys for not rotating so that’s good.

4. LMA. He’s gonna be an all-star.

5. BRoy. Better than last year. His 3pt stroke looks more fluid so I expect him to raise it about 3-4%

6. Batum. Starter for the next 10 years. Simply a baller on both ends. I don’t know how you can’t have Martell, Rudy, and Batum on the wings and not push the court with Andre. That kid exudes confidence and he seems like he wants to take it to the rim.

7. Martell. Looks like he’s our secret weapon off the bench. Dre will make Martell look awesome. He’s not completely back, but no one hustle as much as he does. His tenacity reminds me of Kersey.

8. Pryz must have been working out in the summer…Homeboy looks a lot more ripped. And he practiced shooting about 6 threes during warmups (missed them all). It was good seeing him be lighthearted out there.

9. Travis. Still loves the turnaround fadeaway. Seeing him up close, that kid is LONG…

10. Dante C. Man, this kid was impressive. I would say with his strength and athleticism, he will make Trout expendable. The only problem is that he’s really a SF and not a PF. He looks even shorter than Martell. He’s the reason I think Ime will lose out to J. Collins.

11. Juwuan Howard. He’ s old but crafty. I mean, he knows what to do, tell guys things they don’t see, but his body is too old to help out. He’s gonna help the team though.

12. Rudy. Looks tired. He needs to rest the full training camp.

It was good seeing these players up close…different perspective. easily most impressed by Dre and Batum.

Very nice, thanks

As for Oden, yeah it already seemed last year they have worked a lot less on his explosiveness than say the Suns with Amare. I fear a bit it will be like with Kenyon Martin, that it will take a long time until he has that back. Lots of crunches, lots of stair sprints, maybe even putting weight on his back or on his ankles when jumping. But you can’t do that before you really really trust your legs, and that seems to be coming back now. He doesn’t favor a leg, he doesn’t wear much protection.

He definitely ran flat footed last season

I see what you mean, but I think he runs a bit better now… more on the balls of his feet.

It’s prolly a mixture of compensating for the knee before and making him have a ‘new’ run, and now he’s getting back to normal but the old-new run lingers…

by Mortimer on Oct 5, 2009 11:04 AM PDT up reply actions

Follow-up

1. Andre and Oden need to be starting. They may not run the offense as smoothly as Blake and Prz, but there presence on the court was much stronger. Give them time and it’s golden.

2. Bayless needs some PT now. Too bad we can’t give it to him.

3. “He looks like a basketball player” -Ben. Yep.

4-8. Agreed. Except Batum looks ripped as well. He’s got some muscle on those arms now!

10. Dante is awesome. He could be a small 4…

I was kidding...

Bayless looked good, but PG in the L is the hardest position to grasp… if he’s going to be a PG rather than an undersized 2, I think another season of seasoning and practice against to good PG’s in Miller and Blake will do him good… likely both won’t be back after this year, and then we can turn the second unit over to him for a year and then the first unit the year after that… there’s no rush to get him on the court, I don’t think he’s a significant upgrade over the two guys in front of him in any select area to warrant rushing him out there and making him learn on the fly

In AZ they have snowbirds

Who are old folks who drive down there in monstrous motorhomes setting up tempotrary residences from September until the first week of April when the temps hit 100 degrees. They do this because heat is great for old bones and muscles, or injured bones and muscles. As a disabled person I am intimately aware of this fact.

So it stands to reason that the medical staff in Phoenix isn’t anything special or miraculous, it’s simply that it’s so hot there during the winter and spring when basketball is played (as opposed to back east or up here) that the players heal MUCH faster. Their muscles won’t tighten up overnight because it never gets below 70 degrees.

That's a good reminder

Not being able to do squats till recently… like Cab says, hopefully it is fully back next year.

Like, last year, SOMETIME he could still get his head at the rim, and then other times he was very flat with his jumps. It was erratic. Micro recovery is a multi-year process, but I think we’ll see more explosiveness this year and then as he can do the leg work outs to get the legs strong again, hopefully it’ll be somewhat back.

Sometimes he has it, sometimes he don’t. At least in the past.

Any reviews of the game today?

There’s a lot of players who aren’t really up to NBA level in these games normally. So I’m curious, were these fouls actually correct?

I presume the answer is ‘no’, but it seems useful to be aware of.

by Timmay! on Oct 5, 2009 2:14 PM PDT up reply actions

I’m conflicted.

I feel very positive about the direction this team is heading… but I look at other team blogs and see enthusiastic Wolves fans who insist Kevin Love is going to be an incredible, unstoppable force, Clipper fans who see Baron/Griffin as the modern day Stockton/Malone, and Thunder fans who think that they have the next Big 3.

Are we just caught up in preseason hype, or is it more real because of our win total last year?

Our depth is real

I fear our “top 5” is not as clear and as top as people think yet. E.g. as also a fan of the Mavs, I can say I prefer to have Dirk, Shawn Marion and Josh Howard this season as opposed to anything the Blazers can throw out 2-4 on the perimeter apart from Roy. Would I prefer Batum long term? Sure, but not so fast.

Our age, our owner, our proven success from last season… they’re all hoping for pixie dust to be sprinkled on their team and change it to non-sucky overnight. They’ve done nuthin’ yet to suggest they are on their way UP, let alone on the way to being GOOD.

We’ve had positive trends every year and it culminated with a 54 win season, which isnt’t really a culmination since it’s just the start.

Every fan feels hopeful and a lot of them got good reason to, but we got lots mo’ reasons.

Well we're past how far the Bulls ever got

(since MJ, of course), and being like the Kings or Suns is a risk… good to great teams, but never won a title.

Both of those teams were softies, and we’ve run the risk of being soft as well in the long run. Oden is decidedly not a soft player, and both of those teams didn’t have a two-way post presence, which I think is a big part of it.

It is certainly something that could happen, but we got a long way to go with this team, and lotsa chances to win it all.

I think it does nothing but endanger the kid.

What-you honestly think they thought that maybe just maybe he’d play four quarters on a torn up knee?! How many dual threat QBs do that? Running was such a big part of what he did. No way he does that one legged.

I think Bellotti was much more open about the severity of his player’s injuries. For whatever reason, Chip Kelly seems a lot more guarded about that kind of information. Any injury of any severity is listed as “day to day”. Not to mention that Masoli even said after the game that if he needed to come back in that he could have.

or they could just play hawkins at qb

he’s a feshman will great measurables(6’4" and a good runner) he might not be much of a passer but he could probably run like what they did with harper last year were he just runs and the only passes he makes are screens and other short passes

I don't find UCLA so worrying. UW will be tough though.

UCLA has a good defense, but they may be without Rahim Moore. That would put a serious dent in their pass coverage. Not to mention their running back can’t do anything and they have no passing game to speak of. Craft is only marginally worse than Prince.

UW is a whole different animal. That offense can get points on the board. I dare say it may be the best offense the Ducks have seen all season. Yes, better than Boise State, Cal or Utah. The Purdue game was a kinda flukey game one week after the BSU debacle. I doubt it would go that way now. Locker is a freak and they aren’t too shabby picking up rushing yardage either. Their main problem, of course, is they have trouble stopping anybody outside of USC. That USC game shows what they can do when properly motivated. Not to mention, this is the game right before USC for Oregon, so that factor is present as well. Thank goodness for the bye week. Oregon’s usually pretty good after those, but UW will still definitely not be a pushover.

judging from that timbers game yesterday every soccer game is a fanfest

i kind of just wanted to watch the game but i ended up learning a bunch of cheers with zach words in them and inhaled smoke bombs and expensive beer and chicken strips. it was quite fun, but it seems like you can barely watch the game amongst the craziness, it would be awesome if they had some blazer games at pge park though, didn’t the suns have an outdoor game or two last year?

The Timbers Army participants are what my grandmother would refer to as "touched".

They’re definitely not all there, but the enthusiasm they bring is like nothing you see anywhere else in the country for soccer. Especially on a per capita basis. It’s only going to get more nuts from them when MLS comes to town. It’s really quite fun watching those games though.

Hollinger's stuff is great

example: he’s got the Bayless issue nailed:

The combo guard had a rough rookie year, but the problem wasn’t the oft-heard mantra that Bayless is a shooting guard trapped in a point guard’s body. There are lots of players like that in the league and many of them are thriving. No, Bayless’ issue was that he was a shooting guard who couldn’t shoot trapped in a point guard’s body. That’s a problem.

The fact that he isn’t a true PG is not the issue whatsoever. Its that he was foul-happy and lost on D and couldn’t hit the ocean on O. Fix those issues and he’ll push for pt, regardless of the fact that he a scorer first, 2nd and 3rd.

by jksnake99 on Oct 5, 2009 1:55 PM PDT reply actions

Rudy needs to work on his mid-range J

More Hollinger

Fernandez made only 29.2 percent of his 2s that weren’t at the basket, which was tied for the second-worst mark in the league for a player with at least 100 attempts.

by DrivetheLane on Oct 5, 2009 2:00 PM PDT up reply actions

For some reason it's not something that I'd noticed before the Blazers

but it’s often flat-looking… maybe it’s because he rarely does it for the Blazers so he hurries it more than he would a 3 pointer and is more anxious to make it to prove that he can?

by fanfaraway on Oct 5, 2009 2:07 PM PDT up reply actions

he will be one of the most interesting Blazers to follow this year

both how he improves his dribbling and mid-range shooting, and how the Blazers choose to use him.

Batum, Webster and Oden (and Bayless also, if he ever sees the court) will also be really interesting to watch. Everyone else we have a pretty good idea of what they’ll do on the court.

by jksnake99 on Oct 5, 2009 2:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah this year could be a very interesting year for him

I’m also looking forward to Oden’s progress. For some reason Martell leaves me cold, probably because I’ve hardly ever seen him play :)

by fanfaraway on Oct 5, 2009 2:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Martell's interesting just because its hard to know what to expect from a young player who misses a whole year

Will he continue his (relatively slow) upward trend, will he have a breakout year, or will he never get back to the level he was at pre-injury?

by jksnake99 on Oct 5, 2009 2:22 PM PDT up reply actions

i don’t think he can be worse than he was, seeing as he just shot threes.

I do think he has a legitimate chance to be much, much better than we remember. I also think he could struggle after missing a year.

I don’t know why I don’t know this, not lurking/posting in JD’s enough I guess.

but trust me:
1. It’s nothing good
2. It’s better you don’t know anything about THAT

So my perceptions where right!

:) that is an interesting link, thanks for the trouble.

by fanfaraway on Oct 5, 2009 3:16 PM PDT up reply actions

There at least three things working against the US

1) Size: We are not the biggest country, but definitely bigger than a lot of the smaller ones (DUH!). The list might look different if you lumped Europe into one list. The UK’s list is pretty dang long

2) Hollywood: We apparently like to publicize our killers, and we have Hollywood to do it for us, so I think perception might be skewed because of this.

3) Free Press: The gov’ment doesn’t exactly control the press, so bad news stories get out easier.

I get the paper, so I don't care!

ironic that one of the major highlights from last year for Rudy (and there were many)

was that fade away to put Miami away at the end of the 4th in their house.

Yeah I saw, thanks idol :)

sorry if the Catalan correction was a little much… but the region is called Cataluña!!! (hahaha, I did it again, I am so pedantic!!)

by fanfaraway on Oct 5, 2009 2:00 PM PDT up reply actions

HAH I love it

I actually was going to say Mallorca but felt I could slide out into broadly placing the island into the region without really knowing anything about the region.

So, Ms. Pedantic (I think I just thought of a great FBBALL team name for you), what is the easiest way to type things like ñ ? Do you have to memorize the extended ASCii codeset or do you all have wicked cool keyboards designed to make those easier to type? Unless I copy and paste them, I don’t tend to use them.

by idoltime on Oct 5, 2009 2:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah Mallorca is an island and it's a different region than Cataluña

so if you were to name him by his region you’d say that he’s “Balear”.

I really want to join BRP’s fantasy BBall league, but I don’t know how it functions!! HOw does this fantasy business work???

In my super duper cool keyboard the ñ is right of the L and I type it with my pinkie, so no codeset, just regular typing skills. I also have a Ç left so I can type full on french from here too!

i sent you a invitation...

but it looks like we got 20, so i’m gonna send you another one to be my co-manager!!!

your job is pretty simple: Talk a lot of crap, and keep feeding me that mean paella you make!

Awesome!!

Co-manager… what an honour! that way I’ll learn how it works before joining one and making a fool of myself :)

by fanfaraway on Oct 5, 2009 2:16 PM PDT up reply actions

While you are fighting the Ruskie for worse in division, I’ll be rolling sweet into the playoffs.

See, I already have the inside information on the break out sleeper of the draft. And when our 8th pick is beating your 1st pick, I’m sure having that paella while you are crying will feel very comforting.
