Blazers Fan Fest Gameday Open Thread

The Portland Trail Blazers' intra-squad scrimmage is this evening at the Rose Garden.  It's being televised on Comcast Sports Northwest and coverage begins at 5PM.   Expect the game to tip sometime after 6PM. As an added bonus and a nice surprise, Dwight Jaynes will part of the broadcast team

Last year's Fan Fest highlight was Rudy Fernandez's crazy pass... hopefully we are treated to something equally as awesome this time around.

Feel free to open the pre-game discussion up here and keep it going throughout the game.  Anything particular you're hoping to see? Who will you be watching most closely?

Need more information on the event? Click here. Need tickets?  Download free tickets here (Thanks Corvid).

I'll be out at the Rose Garden tweeting and milling around, and I'll post some thoughts afterwards.  Should be a good time.

-- Ben (benjamin.golliver@gmail.com)

PS In case you missed it I dropped a bunch of Greg Oden footage from yesterday's practice.  That should whet your appetite for tonight.

Gosh I hope it’s free and they are serving free food.

What’s the word?

The counsels of impatience and hatred can always be supported by the crudest and cheapest symbols. For the counsels of moderation, the reasons are often intricate, rather than emotional, and difficult to explain. And so the chauvinists of all times and places go their appointed way: plucking the easy fruits, reaping the little triumphs of the day at the expense of someone else tomorrow, deluging in noise and filth anyone who gets in their way, dancing their reckless dance on the prospects for human progress, drawing the shadow of a great doubt over the validity of democratic institutions. And until peoples learn to spot the fanning of mass emotions and the sowing of bitterness, suspicion, and intolerance as crimes in themselves - as perhaps the greatest disservice that can be done to the cause of popular government - this sort of thing will continue to occur.

Hi

Do you need tickets to go this? I thought it was just a show up and leave kind of thing. My friend offered me two tickets to go since he didn’t want to.

The Kings have the best bench I’ve seen. There are easily 14 guys on this team good enough for every bench in the league. Now if we could only get some starters, I’d totally jizz in my pants.

I'll be watching Oden, Martell, and Bayless, because I think they are likely to show the most progress.

Oden: everyone has been giving the big man props.

Martell: been so long that I almost forgot what he looks like out there, especially on defense.

Bayless: Quick said JB looked very good in scrimmages on his O-Live chat. Combine that with the bit of video Ben put up, and I am really looking forward to seeing how far he has come.

I figure I don’t need to worry about Andre, I know he is going to be good.

Timbers lose.

Only a Portland team could have a 24 match unbeaten streak during the regular season, fail to win the championship and not surprise anyone.

between Nic, Martell and Bayless

I would not be all that concerned about the backup SG minutes if Rudy was hurt and out of the lineup, indefinitely. (Don’t get me wrong, the Blazers will be even stronger with Rudy, but he’s probably the “most replaceable” player in the top 10, because Roy plays 35 mpg and the rest of the “SG minutes” could be covered by those 3)

Two-for-one deal, add a quality veteran PF/C, plus an unprotected #1 draft choice. The roster needs to be thinned at the wing and fortified in the middle.

Unprotected first-round draft picks are hard to come by nowadays, although the New ...

Jersey Nets have some future draft picks — which were acquired from Dallas and Golden State, repsectively — as well as a sizable trade exception that makes them a viable trading partner in a potential Travis Outlaw deal.

2B. 2013 first-round draft pick if Golden State picks 8th or lower that year, but if not …

2C. 2014 first-round draft pick if Golden State picks 7th or lower that year, but if not …

2D. 2014 second-round draft pick and 2016 second-round draft pick.

Basically, New Jersey is banking on Golden State being respectable during at least one of the 2010-2011, 2011-2012, or 2012-2013 seasons. If not, the return will just be two second-round draft picks in lieu of a first-round draft pick.

Who would you trade, Rudy or Bayless?

If you said Rudy, you are out of your mind. He has a ton more talent than Bayless, and Bayless can only play SG too, so what’s the point of trading the better SG. Rudy is the better SG, in case I wasn’t clear, so we should keep him.

by wingzeta on Oct 4, 2009 9:50 PM PDT up reply actions

You are what you can defend

Bayless is better able to defend PGs. Whether he can defend the two is questionable.
Reverse is true for Rudy.

Obviously Rudy is a much more accomplished player, but it is a mistake to say they are both SGs.

I think Miller will know how to unlock Rudy’s game. Last season, Rudy was hamstrung by playing with guys who didn’t see the court like he does. No such problem with Miller. Unless Miller starts, that is…

Rudy played alongside Sergio last year

and few players see the court as well as Rodriguez can (and Sergio would especially “see” Rudy when the 2 were on the court together)

Miller and Rudy looked fine out there, tonight. I’d be surprised if the two of them didn’t have a large +/- advantage as a combo (the white team built a 16 point lead at one time in the 3rd quarter, thanks in large part to Oden) But after Andre went out “for good” in the 4th quarter the black team made their run and won by 9

Didn't have a great view of the game on the internet

But, I thought Nic and Oden showed the most exciting flashes of potential. You could see where their games could go. Blake performed well, but didn’t show something new.

I saw one crazy dunk attempt by Martell, but not much else.

by PoliSam on Oct 4, 2009 8:26 PM PDT up reply actions

It's true, Blake didn't show anything new..

He just keeps finding ways to help his team win. We really need to trade that guy with his lousy 17pts 11assists. It’s hard to say something nice about a player and admit that he is really a very good NBA point guard, when he’s just not very flashy. Blake has had a number of games where he has scored around 20pts, showing he can be a scorer in the NBA when he needs to, but generally plays team-first ball. Andre being on the team may push him to look for his own shot more, in order to keep his job, not so much, because it’s the best thing for the team. Andre on the other hand will need to defer more to other players than he has on his other teams. In the end, their games may prove to be fairly close in terms of production. I’m figuring Oden has a better chance of moving to the first unit than AM, because his physical abilities are a big leap ahead of Joel’s, but Miller and Blake are both very good, one scoring at the hoop more, and one with more shooting. Blake only needs to take it to the hoop a little more to balance out his game, which we know he is capable of, while Andre isn’t likely to become a better shooter. I’m hoping they can co-exist as an awesome PG rotation.

Oh wait, I forgot, Blake had his anomoly “career year” last year, never to be repeated, because the kid just can’t play basketball. So I guess we better trade him, and get Chris Paul for the mid level exception to be Bayless’s back-up.

by wingzeta on Oct 4, 2009 10:17 PM PDT up reply actions

in Freeman's column last week

Joe quoted Blazer coaches (Nate) and players (Roy) saying Blake is ’irreplaceable"

I came to the same conclusion. Oden is ready to start, but Blake isn’t ready to give up his starting job, just yet. And that’s not because Miller looked average, he made several nice passes and found ways to score and get to the FT line (there’s something that Blake cannot do…) I think the Blazers PG position is in the best hands it’s been since the days of Rod Strickland and Greg Anthony, and based on what Blake said on media day, I don’t expect he’ll look to leave PDX next summer…Steve knows he’s in a good situation and he’s playing in a system that suits his game very well

I'd love Blake as a backup

Can’t get much more solider.

He won’t be dynamic like some backups, but he can start in a pinch obviously and he won’t hurt the team most games. He just needs to play with someone who can create better than he can, since it’s an obvious weakness of his.

really?

Colour me surprised…..I thought Bayless played well in this game both on and off the ball, which will be a quality we need from our 2nd guard in the future. Bayless is not a no hoper like you make him out to be, he has the ability to be what we need – he isn’t there yet but I believe he will be.

Trot out stats from his rookie year if you like but small sample size=weak argument in my mind.

by MadBlaze on Oct 4, 2009 8:32 PM PDT up reply actions

I thought both played very well

Miller, of course, is playing himself into shape and has never played with these teammates before.

The bottom line: Bayless has potential to burn. Clearly, his outside shot has improved. But he’s behind two quality, veteran point guards. If Bayless is to get serious playing time this season, Blake or Miller will have to get injured at some point. Not that that’s unlikely; it’s a long season.

I hate to agree with you AK because you are so cynical,

but in this case I have no choice. I thought Bayless had the absolute worst performance as far as auditioning goes for minutes at his spot. By that, what I mean is he performed absymally as the point. The stretch where he played point for the black team coincided with when the white squad took that seemingly backbreaking lead in the third. There were several instances where he was leading the break, and instead of looking for trailers he just went for the bucket himself, even if the defense was right on his tail. He scored a bunch for sure, but we just aren’t looking for an Allan Iverson. With Miller, Blake, Roy and Rudy, I think we have the best backcourt rotation in the league. If one of our points goes down though to injury, I’d rather have Rudy or Roy fill in all their minutes at backup point than have Bayless do it. I just have no confidence in his ability to help his team win at the pg postion.

Miller was going about 60% the entire time

I was about 12 rows up from Barrett. Miller seemed to be favoring his leg (not sure which one) He came up to the table during a timeout and gave his quad/hammy a pretty good stretch. (Maybe he tweaked it during Nate’s conditioning run, who knows?) I was surprised to see how “thick-legged” Andre is, compared to the rest of the team. He’s not fat, just very solid in the lower body. This is why he gets good leverage against taller players, I suspect.

Andre is also herky-jerky, like Brandon. It may look like they’re not running at full speed, but then they’ll hesitate and then burst by the defense and get an “and 1” (Miller did this several times, tonight, and finished with the left hand) This was the ‘Dre that I saw on the youtube highlights last July, and he’s gonna be a tremendous improvement over Sergio. My favorite Miller sequence was when he dove for a loose ball, then twisted and threw a pass from his backside to Webster, who drove the baseline for a dunk. That’s court vision from a difficult angle, and Miller made it look easy

I don't envy Nate at all

If B-Rex can keep it up and show some more stuff it makes you wonder if Blake gets traded by the deadline (along with maybe another player or two) to open up PT for him.

Then again, I’m probably getting way to ahead of myself, J-Bay isn’t even going to sniff the court unless Miller or Blake goes down for an extended period, and I suspect pretty strongly he’s going to ask for a trade if he starts racking the DNPs

by nikolokolus on Oct 4, 2009 7:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Bayless did well as SG, not at PG

Because the team was divided in half, Bayless got to be Roy’s back up. Unfortunately there isn’t much space for him to play there either during the season. He is a little undersized to be a SG, but his chances to play could come from any of four guys getting injured; Roy, Rudy, Blake, Miller. Of course Webster will also be getting some SG minutes if Rudy or Roy goes down. Bayless has gotten his shooting together, which improves his argument for PT, but I for one still have reservations about his ball handling.

Defense would still be an issue with those two guys playing together, as Jerryd ...

Bayless is overaggressive and prone to committing absolutely stupid ticky-tack fouls in one-on-one matchups, has way too small of a wingspan to clog the passing lanes and get steals at a proficient rate, isn’t apt at making the correct rotations on perimeter, and is cringeworthy with how miserable he is when it comes to fighting through screens.

c’mon now. CP3 isn’t blessed with a tremendous wingspan, yet he led the league in steals last year. I don’t seem to recall Stockton having Rondo-arms either.

I do agree with you that he’s bad defensively at this point. It seems to me that it’s more of an inexperience and overaggression issue, though.

I think Brandon will get better on D as the rest of the team requires him less on offense. He’s a good defender when he feels like it.

"If the Lakers are Hollywood, then we are South Central." - Clipper fan.

by Cablinasian on Oct 4, 2009 9:52 PM PDT up reply actions

He has normal PG sized arms

They aren’t 6’8" Rondo arms, but we don’t see Outlaw invading passing lanes with his lanky limbs. Reactions and instincts makes one a good thief.

He is certainly too aggressive on defense, you are right, but he’s also a rookie. Oden was often too aggressive as well, and you agree with me that he’ll turn out good defensively.

Screens, rotations, not being so aggressive, all comes with experience. Willingness + experience is what most young players need for defense, if their body is athletic enough to handle it.

by Mortimer on Oct 4, 2009 9:54 PM PDT up reply actions

I think he'll score pretty efficiently and be a mediocre willing passer

He’ll never get a lot of assists, but if he can learn to be less aggressive on defense (easier to turn it down than turn it up) and have rudimentary PG ability and play most of the time off the ball, I think he can be a good pairing with Roy.

He gets to the line like a maniac, and I know he can score, but I need to see him play smarter defense (I think he can play ‘good’ defense when he isn’t fouling, just really inexperienced defense) and how to defer properly— which will either come, or it won’t. I think he’s smart enough to figure it out.

I don’t think he sees the layers of passing good PGs see, and he won’t ever. He isn’t a horrible passer, and he WANTS to pass. The willingness makes him not a ballhog, but he doesn’t have the vision. But, he can break down a defender better than Blake ever could, and Blake isn’t a strong passer/playmaker either… just a very safe and careful one.

Good PG defense + ability to score efficiently + able to dribble the ball up the court and pass it off to Roy and sometimes take it himself = The Bayless Theory. SG on offense, PG on defense. No hardcore playmaking required.

He’s got a chance. Not because of today (I didn’t get a good look at him), but because of his athleticism and work ethic.

Tell that to the ‘99-00 Blazers. I’m not saying KP is Whitsitt and the current Blazers are not the ‘99-00 squad. But too many young vets and not enough minutes o go around may seem like a GM’s dream, but to the coach and players who aren’t getting enough PT, it’s not as fun as a fantasy roster. At least one more veteran role player who’s better than Howard/Collins to replace an excess wing player would help (I thought Juwan looked sharp tonight, BTW, I’m just not sure if he can defend well enough in the post to be a playoff reserve)

With everyone on less than MLE or rookie sized contracts

“Consolidating” is much, much, much easier than it was to get all this talent. It’s a good problem to have that is extremely easy to fix…

I imagine they are waiting to see HOW they want to ‘fix’ it. There are a lot of ways the talent on this team can go, and we’re still in a position where we can wait and see how it develops before we move good players just to solidfy roles and rotation.

"Consolidating" is much, much, much easier than it was to get all this talent

In KP’s case, I’m not so sure that’s true. He made some great draft day trades (with a little help from Paul Allen’s wallet…) and of course winning the lottery the year Oden came out was a bolt from the blue.

But I think it’s going to be harder for KP to deal away a few of these kids because most of them he drafted and all of them he’s watched develop. There won’t be an “easy” choice (like Jack and Sergio) this time around, unless one of the players (or more likely, their agent) “snaps” and demands more PT or a ticket out of town. And even then, there’s the fear of trading the “wrong” guy, like Whitsitt did with Jerm.

No, I don’t think consolidation will be easy at all for KP, especially during the season when he doesn’t like to disrupt chemistry. But if he wants the team to be ready for the finals, it’s exactly what he will have to do, sooner or later

You also have to consider that injuries can happen, and probably will

Not every player plays every game, so there are more minutes to go around than it might appear.

by trk on Oct 4, 2009 10:49 PM PDT up reply actions

That goes back to what I was saying

KP and Nate must be figuring that injuries will inevitably ease some of the pressure to find minutes for so many capable guys. It’s a long, long season, and the NBA is a physical game. At least for stretches, the less-played players should get their minutes.

But, of course, come playoff time the rotation will have to shrink. At that point, the rubber will meet the road. Unless guys are out of action with injuries, the Blazers will have some very unhappy campers.

I think he showed somewhat more than marginal improvement (like you said, based on a sample size that means less than summer league) on is shot and maybe even on his defense. Not sure if that really makes him anything more than he was.

I think he’s shown marked improvement since SL 2008 in dishing the ball in the flow of the offense and shooting. His defense is probably marginally better.

Where he really struggles is running the offense, understanding it. Maybe the switch will flip Maybe it won’t. It’s a low-risk investment.

Hmm

I’d say Hinrich is a LOT better than Blake.

Much better defender (Hinrich is one of the best at the PG spot, and can guard SGs as well), better pick and roll, not a great shot creator for himself or others, but better than Blake still.

They are pretty equal shooting wise.

Hinrich’s defense is what makes him MUCH better, but he’s also better offensively.

I don’t wanna hatch more Hinrich-wars though, since it’s a dead issue now.

by Mortimer on Oct 4, 2009 10:13 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree that Hinrich is better...but the stats don't back it up

the point is that a lot of people endorse way overpaying for marginal upgrades. PG and backup PF remain the two best targets for upgrading the roster, but as you mention elsewhere – the price for such an upgrade far exceeds the available return….

by blacknoiseNW on Oct 4, 2009 10:17 PM PDT up reply actions

by Cablinasian on Oct 4, 2009 10:23 PM PDT up reply actions

82games.com says the margin was miniscule

with defense being the prime advantage for Hinrich. But the basic point remains the same – how much is a marginal upgrade worth? To me, it is just annoying for people to throw out Bayless + Blake + Outlaw for Hinrich when you can do a little research and wonder why you would even bother with a Blake for Hinrich straight up (cost, anyone?)

by blacknoiseNW on Oct 4, 2009 10:35 PM PDT up reply actions

To me, cost is meaningless

Cap space is gone for the next decade and more.

Best players who fit the best is all we need to worry about, unless someone has a completely ridiculous contract that harms the financial stability and flexibility of the team.

Hinrich has a fair deal that gets lower every year. Blake has a fair deal as well. Ya pay more for Hinrich, because you get more, especially defensively.

by Mortimer on Oct 4, 2009 10:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Is Hinrich twice the player Blake is?

No, but yes— he is paid twice as much. It doesn’t really work that way though…

by Mortimer on Oct 4, 2009 10:40 PM PDT up reply actions

No question, Hinrich is better defensively

but NET productivity is the best measure of effectiveness. You have to outscore your opponent to win, and ironically, Miller was far superior to both Blake and Hinrich in that regard.

by blacknoiseNW on Oct 4, 2009 10:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, Hinrich's not a great scorer

But, my point was, he’s still better than Blake at that, AND his defense makes it so
he’s quite a bit better.

Especially on a team like ours that was so good offensively and stands to get even
better from the improvements of LMA, Oden, Batum, Roy, Webster, etc. Scoring
wasn’t the problem, defense was, so the Hinrich edge in defense becomes even
more important than his slight offensive edge.

by Mortimer on Oct 4, 2009 10:44 PM PDT up reply actions

For an offensive upgrade at PG

I don’t think we coulda’ got anyone better than Miller, so we did good there.

Just gotta hope he isn’t worse than Blake on defense, and we’re ahead of the game.

by Mortimer on Oct 4, 2009 10:45 PM PDT up reply actions

that’s arguable, seeing as Hinrich’s adjusted +/- and raw +/- were both tremendous.

by Cablinasian on Oct 4, 2009 10:43 PM PDT up reply actions

I could use a good link to defensive metrics

but the spark for this discussion isn’t whether Hinrich is better than Blake – but what you would pay for someone like Hinrich. The net improvement over Blake isn’t so great that Bayless and Outlaw become “throw in’s”.

If you are going to pay high – get someone really good. Problem is, the really good ones aren’t available. Even if someone like Harris was available – would he be the Net’s version or the Dallas version, playing for the Blazers? Because of the talent of the Blazer roster – I’d lean toward the latter – and that would never be worth the cost.

by blacknoiseNW on Oct 4, 2009 10:48 PM PDT up reply actions

I think the Dallas version would be perfect

He played better defense when he wasn’t relied upon to be the top scorer, and he knew how to play without the ball in his hands all the time.

One man fastbreak, great defender, underrated passer… the Mavs version would be awesome.

by Mortimer on Oct 4, 2009 10:53 PM PDT up reply actions

That is precisely what a point guard is supposed to do

in Nate’s system. The question is – how hard is it to get that skill set? You would be paying for the Net’s version, and getting the Dallas version, but the Net’s version costs a whole lot more….

by blacknoiseNW on Oct 4, 2009 11:13 PM PDT up reply actions

He's so good and young

Good Point

That is also why Hinrich is not better offensively than Blake. Blake plays for a much more talented team, where he defers to a bunch of other players before he takes his own shot, the way D Fisher does on the Lakers. On the Blazers Hinrich would not be shooting as much as he did when he was the starter for the Bulls, and Blake shoots a higher percentage. Why am I letting myself get sucked into this?

by wingzeta on Oct 4, 2009 10:55 PM PDT up reply actions

The Bulls try to make Hinrich be more of a pure PG in the past

He isn’t a great playmaker, and is similar to Blake there, but just more athletic.

As a combo guard who defends PGs and plays off of Roy, I think he’d be Blake+… for sure.

Everyone shoots better when wide open, and Hinrich would be wide open as a Blazer.

Oh man, I didn’t wanna hatch a Hinrich debate…

by Mortimer on Oct 4, 2009 10:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Steve made lots of shots with a hand in his face.

That’s selective memory. How many times has Blake had to bail out a dead offensive set, by putting up a three with 1 on the shot clock? It happened quite a bit last year. Yes, he does benefit from kick outs from a doubled Roy, but Hinrich had to benefit a little from Gordon drawing a double too. That’s just basketball. How many threes did Blake shoot against Boston when Roy was injured? How did he do? Look it up if you don’t remember. I think it would be ridiculous to say the guy isn’t really a very good shooter.

How about this. Hinrich played in the much weaker East, against much weaker teams and defenses, so his shooting percentage is artificially high. That is true, but ok, at this point I am just having fun. The reasons these Hinrich things get so rediculous is because his supporters way overvalue/oversell a guy who is good but not great. He’s a good player, and I wouldn’t mind him as a Blazer, but I wouldn’t trade Blake for him, or pay his large salary, which even in it’s last year is more than what we will pay Andre. Why can’t we get a real back up power forward with some of the guys we have to trade? Frankly the next franchise point guard for the Blazers will come from the draft, and will most likely be after or on the tail end of the current championship window. As others have said the top PGs are not available. At least we agree that we don’t need a superstar PG to win a ring. A team can only hold so many stars, and we have plenty.

by wingzeta on Oct 4, 2009 11:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Ben Gordon as a playmaker isn't really something that exists

Hinrich doesn’t get kick outs from Ben Gordon, it’s the other way around.

I never said Blake wasn’t a good shooter, but he isn’t a good scorer. Obviously he’s a very good 3 point shooter.

the next franchise point guard for the Blazers will come from the draft

That hasn’t happened since Terry Porter, nearly 25 years ago The Blazers have a horrible record of drafting/developing PGs, no matter who the coach/GM are. It’s a worthy discussion to come up with trade scenarios that target a young PG (KP supposedly has his eyes on Harris, for example) and use Portland’s excess wing players as bait. But I’m happy with Miller/Blake for the next 2 years, and Hinrich’s ship sailed last Feb

opponent PER is sketchy because matchups in basketball are not usually linear… there are switches, some defenders draw the best player on the other team, etc. Defensive on/off does a better job of looking at what a given player does when on the floor, in my opinon.

Hinrich is better than Blake, in a vacuum

but for Nate and Brandon, Steve is their guy. Kirk could come in here and play for Portland, but it may take years for him to reach the comfort level that Blake has with Roy, already. I’m not saying that it couldn’t happen, but that it’s a moot point now because KP had the opportunity to acquire Hinrich last spring when he was “available” for RLEC (and Blake’s shoulder was in a sling) and KP didn’t pull the trigger. Now that Miller’s on board, there’s no reason to pursue Kirk

If you want to take a current Blazer and make a deal for Portland’s future starting PG, look at Rudy. There’s a guy with “not enough minutes” in PDX who could go to a team that needs a starting SG and become an all-star, PDQ

Rudy had a bunch of nice passes

I don’t think he really looked comfortable running the team though. It seemed like he was forcing things. He would bring the ball up the court and then just attack immediately rather than taking his time to survey the situation and set up plays. Hopefully he will show some improvement in his ability to run the team as he gets more experience with his new role.

I see your point

I think Rudy runs a bit faster than the team, also, so it makes it look even more frantic. But I really feel like Rudy gets how to run the team. That is obviously the toughest role to plop yourself into. I think Rudy and ’Dre both looked less apt for running the offense tonight than they really are because the connection between the playmaker and the rest of the unit cannot be faked. Rudy just needs to adjust to how different it is to run an offense throughout the possession as opposed to just making plays happen when time is running down.

I’d say Andre was pretty darn “apt” at running that white team, for a guy with less than a week of practice time with his new teammates

Some guy was saying how Rudy Fernandez is a terrible player and we should have traded

him for David Lee when we had the chance. I wanted to punch him in the face. First of all it’s a scrimmage, second of all David Lee is the best player on the Knicks. The New York Knicks. Rudy actually has a role here, not backing up Aldridge and Oden which is what David Lee is goo for.

How about that Juwon Howard?

He tossed that outlet pass like a pro. Even made some nice entry passes to Oden.

Rudy at PG is pretty much a disaster. He makes too many risky decisions like forcing passes and splitting double teams. I still say keeping him on the weakside, coming off screens, or running the wing is the best option.

Blake was in mid-season form running the fast break.

Roy, Miller, and LMA looked liked they were playing half-speed.

Outlaw was Outlaw.

Oden made Przybilla look invisible. I fully expect Oden to start this season.

Batum and Webster make a good 1-2 punch at the 3 position.

I just think Rudy played exactly how I imagined him playing with the ball

Whether it’s regular season or practice, I don’t think he’s going stop taking those risks. That’s what makes him such a great player. We just don’t need that at the PG position, at least, not full time with Rudy handling the ball.

by blzrfan on Oct 4, 2009 9:57 PM PDT up reply actions

I was surprised he was trying to split double teams

He seemed to be dribbling better than last year, quicker with the ball (he’d be soooo slow for a SG with the ball in his hands, in stark contrast to how quick he is off the ball), and trying to do PG stuff like splitting double teams.

It was nice to see, but needs to be seen in real games to know if he can do it. I think he’s an awesome passer, but I worry about his ballhandling ability.

by Mortimer on Oct 4, 2009 9:59 PM PDT up reply actions

I think it's nice to know McMillan is willing to experiment.

I see this as a sign of respect to Rudy. Giving him a chance to be a playmaker and control the ball. Ultimately, I think McMillan is gonna stick to his type of basketball which is limiting turnovers.

"I'm at the thingamajig talking the yakety-yak" - Kenny Smith

by blzrfan on Oct 4, 2009 10:02 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree

I say he gives Rudy lengthy minutes at PG to either let him hang himself or prove himself during the pre-season, and in the early parts of the year.

I think, like you, he’ll pull the plug on it when the turnovers pile up, but I hope he sees it as a longterm solution and tries to give Rudy as many minutes as a PG as possible.

by Mortimer on Oct 4, 2009 10:39 PM PDT up reply actions

that's funny

because I recall Nate saying he likes Rudy taking chances, here’s the quote

Those types of daring, thread-the-needle passes still resonate in the mind of McMillan. On Thursday, the coach could still recall two passes Fernandez made last preseason, when he bounced a pass through the legs of a defender.

“That is why I want to get that in there,” McMillan said, laughing at the memory of those passes. “He will make some turnovers, but he will also make that pass. He is a very, very unselfish player. So much so that he turns the ball over looking for his teammates. Plus, I think he wants this.”

I remember him saying it

But in the past he has been the opposite of that statement.

However, it would be another example of the growth of Coach Nate. Traditionally, he is very anti-turnovers. If Rudy’s creativity and the struggle to find him minutes helps him not worry so much about it, I’m all for it.

I expect Nate to change and grow as our players change and grow.

by Mortimer on Oct 5, 2009 1:19 AM PDT up reply actions

Oh I agree

I don’t think Nate will like Rudy’s turnovers any more than he enjoyed Sergio’s “creativity” when it misfired…but if the coach wants the team to “push” the ball he’s going to have to let them all make some mistakes.

As for Rudy I think it will come down to how he defends, and how he fights through screens, etc. Segio couldn’t do it, and he’s gone. Rudy’s a much better player than Rodriguez, but for Fernandez to keep earning his minutes he’s going to have to improve his ballhandling and perimeter defense. We’ll be watching

just from watching Spain in Eurobasket, though………….. I think that the distance between playmaker and point guard is evident. Sure, he runs a nice pick and roll and is a great post entry passer, but he struggles bringing the ball up the floor and has a generally weak handle. I think we’ll see the ball in Rudy’s hands (as it was down the stretch last year), but he’ll probably be with a point guard.

I think Rudy is capable of becoming a PG eventually

But he isn’t ready right now. They should play him at SG together with a PG, and gradually add more PG duties to his role when he shows that he is capable of carrying them out successfully. Rudy hasn’t really been a full-time PG before, so this will be a learning experience for him.

good take. I was most impressed with Oden, Webster, and Batum.

Andre is clearly playing his way into shape at this point. He didn’t care too much and it was evident. Brandon and LaMarcus were halfhearted at best.

The thing to take away is that Oden is light on his feet and actually coordinated. He just looked awkward last year. He looked like he knew how to control his body tonight.

1. Martell and Nic aren’t making it easy for Nate to pick a starting SF, but either way is a win-win (I say stay with Nic because his d is needed on starting sf’s like Lebron, Carmelo, etc. and Martell can run fast breaks with Andre, Rudy and T.O.).

The team looked so much sharper than on Ben's scrimmage videos.

Of course having the fans in at the Rose Garden is a big asset ! Some observations:
1) Martell was like BACK, hitting his outside shot, and playing strong- really encouraging.
2) Ime was back too, hitting shots when left open, really looking good, showing why he is good to have on the bench. Patty unfortunately not in position to contest the spot.
3) Greg was as advertrised, smoother, more confident with good reason… just stay healthy and continue, please.
4) Travis’ offense looked good 3s, drives to hoop for dunk and alley oop. No problem for Travis fans.
5) Blake was dropping 3s relentlessly, for the MVP- not handing over the starting role easily. Could be a matter of which unit needs the outside shot most.
6)Cunningham looking very good, athletic, smooth shot.
7) Miller, another laying on the floor assist… is this a standard play for him ?
8) Roy backing off and letting his team mates get the attention. Its not like he needs it, and his position (and contract) are secure. Class.
9) Rudy doing a lot of ball handling, his shot was not dropping too well.. .
10) Batum looking really good, hitting his shots.
11) I was kind of rooting for the second unit, which made LMAs nice shooting a nice problem.
12) Announcer inttroduced Bayless as a “fan favorite”, plenty of applause, almost got him to smile.
Lots of good things happening, very satisfying fan fest.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside.
