Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

I'm really feeling let down

It wasn't supposed to be like this.  Opening up at home, the first two games were supposed to be a breeze.  Sure, the second game was against a team that a lot of people think is going to be a contender, but the first game was against a weakened opponent.  And this team is supposed to be an elite team, most of the national pundits say so.  If you are elite, you should win easily at home against weak opponents, and you should beat good teams at home, too.

Star-divide

I just don't get what is wrong.  The offense was totally flat.  And the team gave up so many fouls, the other guys just paraded to the free throw line.

Sure, there is a starting forward out, but this team is supposed to be deep.  I just don't get it.

And I know that the big free agent acquisition hasn't had time to really meld into the team and learn the system yet.  I get all that.  But when you are an elite team, you ought to take those things in stride.

I don't really want to think about it much, but that game could be important in a tie-breaker later in the season.  To make it up, these guys are going to have to go into their place and get a win, and that isn't going to be easy.

This season started with such high hopes.  To have it all come crashing down in the second game, in a HOME game, is kind of hard for fans of this team to take.  Is this team really elite, or not?

I mean, we know Dallas is supposed to be good, but come on....

As a Nugs fan I saw this as a tightly contested game that could have gone either way which ended up happening. The simple reason for that is I think the Blazers went an an absolute tear at the end of last season to get a top 4 seed and home court in the playoffs. Not trolling but I think they overachieved and set themselves up for huge expectations each game and moreso at home. The Nugs basically returned the same team with a retooled bench while the Blazers changed up in a much bigger way. It’s too early to tell but signing Andre Miller never made sense unless they were going to play uptempo. The west is still wide open and the Blazers will have to win on the road to prove they’re elite. Good teams play close games at home and great teams have a short memory and win games regardless, home or away. The Blazers missed 5 FTs in the 4th quarter to the Nugs 1 which says they probably shouldn’t have won. One game against Denver doesn’t mean the homecourt advantage is gone and I expect the division to be a dogfight with the better road team coming out on top.

I'm not your "guy friend"

That said, Nugget-man is RIGHT.

The Blazers have new weapons on offense — New Greg, Martell back, Andre — and it will take time to figure it out.

We did miss Batum against Denver. Plain and simple. We did show growth, and we did have problems. And if Oden had hit those two free throws, LMA had hit some shots, Roy had been more efficient, or if Steve found a way to contribute, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.

jscot — SERIOUSLY. Chill dude. We have more talent than the Nuggs. Nate is doing what I think he should be doing, trying to find out what works. He couldn’t in the preseason, because his players for whatever reason weren’t bringing it.

Everything is as it should be. By the All-Star break, this team won’t be seen as just a contender. We will be seen as a major contender. Potential needs time to gel. I want us in decent position for the playoffs, but if I were in charge, that wouldn’t be my goal for this team. This is no time to stiffen up and try to take a couple games.

Trust Nate and the team to find their way. And let me know what you think come March, and come May.

And might I add . . .

Melo got every call, we never doubled him to get the ball
out of his hands & we shot terribly from the field. In addition, if GO
makes one out of two FT’s at the end, it’s tied with the THUGGets
needing to score with 4 seconds to win. If it goes to overtime, they
don’t have Nene or Martin for the extras.
I feel your anxiety J. The Blazers are still tip toeing around the PG
and balance situation. I personally feel that Miller finishing the game
with Roy and Rudy is not the right move. Blake has not played well yet,
but his ability to stretch the floor/spot up really worked in the 4th last year.
I still really like Miller as the catalyst for the 2nd unit, since the creator/
post threat really will help make our second unit tough. He will still get
25-28 minutes and be a integral part of our success.

Yes, that is exactly what it was

Nobody panics over that team losing to Dallas, so we shouldn’t panic over a close loss to a team when a superstar goes on a fourth quarter tear.

We should have been able to win anyway, but it’s a long season.

I think the Blazers went an an absolute tear at the end of last season to get a top 4 seed and home court in the playoffs.

This is true, and it may have a built up a false sense of security among the fanbase

But as Nate has said recently, “this is a different year, and a different team” It took last year’s team until March to really kick it into gear, and expecting them to “pick up right where they left off” is wishful thinking. During the preseason, Nate also said that if the players think they can just “throw a switch” and be ready for the regular season, they have another thing coming

We’ll see how the young team responds to adversity tonight, and against OKC. Coming home 1-3 is not outside the range of possibilities. I just hope Nate doesn’t continue to fall back and rely on the starting lineup that got “hot” in March-April, last year. Batum is hurt, so that “old” starting lineup isn’t going to be available for months. If the offense continues to sputter It may be time to try a new “mix” and then have the patience that they will gel and “come together” down the stretch, just like last year

Man, I do feel for you. After that post you had regarding Nate McMillan, last night's loss must've felt like ...

a proverbial slap in the face. Suffice it to say, though, the Portland Trail Blazers just aren’t a 60-win team in all likelihood. Somewhere in the low-50s to mid-50s is the most practical estimation, but there’s nothing wrong with a bit of optimism sprinkled in lightly here and there. Yet, you can overdose on optimism, so be careful to keep most of your high expectations — which are currently hopes and dreams at best — in check. Regarding McMillan, the stagnant high-low zone offense and his penchant to coach a grinding, slow-paced style will not change now or ever. It’s just not within his nature, pure and simple.

Cleaver.

I like how some people equate LA to the Blazers.
I loath LA but they are a very very good team, and have no reason to worry in the slightest
about last nights loss. Portland on the other hand, has a lot to work through.

by MotoMan045 on Oct 31, 2009 12:29 PM PDT up reply actions

We are a very good team, but we are not elite

My take on the season so far is that the team has not meshed at all. There are so many factors going into it. Greg, and Joel seem to be having head troubles. LMA played pathetic D in the first game getting into foul trouble and then was pushed around by Denver in game 2. Miller is obviously not a good fit with Roy (Duh we’ve been saying that would be the case for like three years now). Webster had a year off and the team is just getting to know him again. And worst of all McMillan looks like he is winging his line ups.

But what concerns me most is that my boy Jscot is down. Come on man it’s early in the season and nobody has played up to their potential so far except Rudy and maybe Brandon. Give it time, keep the spreadsheets warm for later in the year and get ready to watch a beatdown in Houston. The Blazers will figure it out.

I'm calling for 57 wins this season.

Dwight Jaynes said before the season started it would take a couple months for the Blazers to figure things out. The Blazers spoil

the fans by being way too good way to early, so everyone expects things to work right away. They aren’t even suppose to be this good for such a young inexperienced team.

by BRoyInThe4th on Oct 31, 2009 1:39 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree that we weren't supposed to be this good this soon

But that also chaps my hide about some of the moves the front office has made, namely Andre Miller. We needed to find a long term solution to our PG problems this offseason and instead we are trying to put a round peg in a square hole. And even if it fits it will only last for two seasons at the most.

I'm calling for 57 wins this season.

Andre Miller was a great pick, and he will prove it to you once Nate loosens the reins…
And the goal is that after Dre’s THIRD season (we have a club option), Bayless, who, if he could learn to pass, could be a similar fast break quarterback…

And besides that, if Dre can help us win a championship in the next three years, will that still “chap your hide”??

The coaching feels weird.

I hate to say that because it’s such a cliche to blame the coach after a loss, but I can’t help it.

The fact that Miller is standing around waiting for jump shots just kills me. That’s the wrong way to use him and Nate should know that. The substitution patterns were getting crazy in the fourth quarter. Blake looked bad. Miller looked awkward. Aldridge was doing all the wrong things and no one seemed to be telling him.

Speaking of Aldridge, why is he suddenly playing exactly like Channing Frye?

Ya

Comparing the Blazers to the Lakers doesn’t make very much sense to me. LA is a veteran team that has proven over the last couple of years that they are elite. They are the defending world champs and were missing their 2nd best player, who also was the piece that transformed them from good to really, really good. The Blazers are young, and in all likely hood, overachieved last season. Jackson has 10 rings, Nate has 0. Every good team drops games, my concerns with our blazers go beyond the loss to the nuggets, its the way they looked the first two games and much of the preseason…

by Rudiculous on Oct 31, 2009 9:23 AM PDT up reply actions

It's an 82 game season.

Portland is not only one of the youngest teams in the league (still), they are trying to incorporate 2 & 1/2 new players into their rotation. Sure it is great to have them start the season off with a 10 game winning streak. But they could play .500 through the first 10 – 16 games and still be ok.

Lol, rec'd

A nice bit of perspective. While it is going to be frustrating at times, the fact his team is integrating new pieces/roles combined with a loaded Western conference is a recipe for a relatively slow start. Thursday was frustrating because that game was on the table at a lot of points, and the Blazers didn’t take advantage. Seeding is indeed important, so hopefully Portland can grab one in Denver later on, as I think the top 3 in the NW division will be tight all year.

My take on the game(S)....

I know the Blazers are fouling.. a LOT. But to me, it looks like the Blazers did exactly what Nate said this team was going to do, which was work on defense. They are playing very physical defense, for the most part. It looks like they spent so much time on defense that the offense is just not there yet. My guess is that they still have last season post season in there head and feel like they got pushed around so they are coming out playing a very physical game, and are getting called for it.

Greg needs to work on clutch free throws. I have never been more upset about missed free throws. And whats with Roy missing a late free throw, and Andre did the same.

I would also like to apologize… I did not do my pre game ritual… so I feel this loss was partially my fault… I wont make that mistake again.,..

I think of the Blazers

as the Oregon State Football of the NBA. They can’t seem to get the top-level talent through recruiting so they have to develop from within. A slow start is a natural outcome of that internal development. I realize that this particular disjointed start has more to do with new players meshing with the existing team, but the development seems to be about learning the new game.

From what I remember of the Spurs dynasty years, they only added a bit player or two in the off-season, so the change was fine-tuning more than a complete rebuild.

I’m having fun. Usually if you are having fun yourself, enough other people will enjoy it to make it worth it.

I have to confess, I didn’t put a whole lot of thought into it, though. It just kind of came to me.

True

But I guess I must have misunderstood your ‘hiatus’ comment over in my own thread. Which of course ironically underscores the point I am making here. Communication is HARD.

Oh, that

That was just a joke about AK saying yesterday he was going to take a hiatus for a month and coming back in less than 24 hours.

by jscot on Oct 31, 2009 1:22 PM PDT up reply actions

But yes

Communication is HARD in part because you couldn’t see the grin on my face as I typed it. And there is always the problem about unequal knowledge. Anyone who didn’t see AK’s post wouldn’t have known what I was talking about.

Anyone who didn’t know that the L@kers lost to Dallas last night, and that Pau was out, was unlikely to pick this one up.

Anyone who hasn’t read a lot of my posts, and doesn’t know me enough to know that one loss is unlikely to get me feeling down, that I’m not the type to think one game is indicative of anything, was particularly vulnerable to my fun little deceit here. Those who are more used to me were less likely to fall for it.

by jscot on Oct 31, 2009 1:26 PM PDT up reply actions

But, I not only knew about AK's remark, I launched the JD that "investigated" the disappearance of his post making that statement.

And so, I figured you were using his phrase, but to make a point regarding the reactions I was getting in my post.

I should always remember what happens when I “assume” something. Since I shouldn’t assume everybody has seen this one, “U make an ASS out of ME.”

Ah, I see

AK was leaving in part because he was fed up with Nate’s offense.

So I decided to “leave” because I was fed up with the work of the training/medical staff as described so brilliantly in your post.

Just barely

Or as alive as anyone can be after a year and a half spent in that land of the living dead, L.A.

I still check in here from time to time but rarely feel compelled to post, Frankly, I doubt that I’d have much worthwhile to say these days on the subject of the Blazers. Now that I’m no longer in Portland, I just don’t have the inclination or resources to follow the team as closely as I did when I posted regularly on here.

Still root for the team – and especially Oden – to do well and catch them whenever they’re on national TV. And if I ever feel the need for a good dose of Blazer minutiae, I know I can always stop by here to get my fill.

by knickfan on Oct 31, 2009 12:20 PM PDT up reply actions

So are you still in LA?

The Knicks’ bandwagon is undoubtedly a little less depressing than it was when you lived in Portland. I think the days when I wanted to be on their bandwagon died when the Frazier/Reed days came to an end.

1. Send a World memo on humor, satire, parody, subtlety. If not, all we have is knock-knock jokes.
2. Rig the Blazer games
3. Do something about tapioca. It tastes icky.
4. Get me a date with Penelope Cruz.

I’ll just use mind-control on opposing GMs. Much cleaner and harder to trace.

After all, the only way I’ll ever become ruler of anything is by using mind control, so might as well practice on people like Presti, Ainge, etc.

by jscot on Oct 31, 2009 1:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Well done jscot

The key difference, of course, is that the Lakers are going to win 60+ games and easily take their division title. So their loss means little. The Blazers, meanwhile, missed their best chance to beat Denver (who was on the 2nd of a b-2-b and missing a key player) in what constitutes a 2 game swing in what is likely to be a very tight race.

So, while its just one game and won’t define the season in either case, the Blazers’ loss was much more damaging.

I know all that

but one loss does not a season break, and even the best teams lose games you wouldn’t think they should lose.

I can tell you how to make an Excel spreadsheet that proves Portland wins 62 games this year.

by jscot on Nov 1, 2009 12:00 AM PDT up reply actions

True

But we must define “supposed to win” to assess that.

The best teams lose half or more of their road games against teams with winning records. So a loss in Houston is hardly one you are “supposed to win”. You are supposed to win some and lose some games like that.

The best teams also lose the occasional home game against good teams, especially when the visiting team has a superstar that gets really hot in the fourth. A home game against Denver is not a “supposed to win” game. You are supposed to win more of those than you lose, but you are expected to lose some of them.

Considering how poorly we played in those two games, the fact that we kept it close and were a couple of free throws from winning the Denver game is actually pretty encouraging.

And it hurts even more because its truth rings even louder. We’re NOT an elite team because we don’t have anything close to the mentality that elite teams have.

Outlaw should be traded for a tough backup PF. Outlaw is too darn nonchalant.

Make Roy the starting PG and let Bayless play some 2. guard.

For evidence I give you the excitement over beating OKC on the road

Brandon shouldn’t have to exhale after beating a cellar-dwelling team on the road. Brandon should be pissed the game was even that close. That’s the diff between teams like the Celtics and Lakers and the Blazers at this point.

No road game should be expected to be easy

San Antonio lost at OKC last year, and OKC is arguably better this year.

That doesn’t mean we are playing well. But on the road in the NBA, a win is a win.

Guess I'm blind in one eye ...

… and can’t see out of the other.

Guess I also have a problem trying to equate pre-season games with the regular season.

I don’t have to guess about the team having obvious issues however. It is obvious that they haven’t had time yet to gell as a group. Fortunately, the solution to that issue is pretty simple.

Nice

You snagged me, but I also agree with your post.

No panic, but things ARE clicking slower than I expected. The blazers were amazingly tight and I thought some of that would roll over. Instead we have some hiccups.

It’s the end of the season that matters, not the beginning, but I would like to see some prettier plays and some better defense.

"Fernandez, to my eyes, is the Blazer who walks that walk most comfortably. A lot of Portland's fans (egged on, dare I say, by their local broadcasters) lament things like how Ron Artest or Yao Ming get to hit Brandon Roy's arms.

But I suspect Fernandez sees all that and thinks: We get to hit arms! Cool!"

It's still VERY early

The season was just born. The Blazers are still a top 6 team in the west. But Dallas will be a good team. I picked them to be 3rd in the west behind LA and San Antonio in an office pool.

I’m a true Laker fan, through and through, and I did not get bothered by that horrid loss the Lakers suffered Friday night. The Mavericks basically pimp slapped the Lakers, and I don’t care how bad the refs were, it’s not an excuse for any team to use. I just know the Lakers will be fine.

The Nuggets will be good too. Carmello is tearing it up. This season is going to be a lot of fun to watch.

Well let me welcome everybody to the wild wild west. A state that's untouchable like Elliot Ness.
